Good afternoon, Today at Senate I shared with colleagues that the University of Manitoba has accepted the report titled University of Manitoba Indigenous Senior Leadership: Report and Recommendations to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic), prepared by a committee chaired by Dr. Catherine Cook, Vice-Dean Indigenous, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. We are acting promptly on the recommendations, beginning with the approval last week at the Board of Governors to move forward with the establishment of a Vice-President (Indigenous) position. Student Climate Strike Events on September 27, 2019

In Winnipeg, strike action and other activities have been planned between 12-5pm at the Manitoba Legislature by the Manitoba Youth for Climate Action<https://www.mbyouthforclimateaction.org/>. At the University of Manitoba we all care about this issue and the future of our planet. We are committed to environmental sustainability and to minimizing our ecological impact. UM students who would like to participate in the international strike for climate movement are encouraged to communicate directly with their course instructors in advance to determine if alternative arrangements can be made. Invitation to Community Presentation on Sexual Violence

Good afternoon, As was reported<https://news.umanitoba.ca/sexual-violence-report-being-reviewed/> to the community on July 19, the report I requested last year to help guide the University of Manitoba to better address sexual violence, harassment and discrimination has been completed. I commend co-authors Donna Miller and Helga Van Iderstine for their hard work on this independent review, titled Responding to Sexual Violence, Harassment & Discrimination at the University of Manitoba: A Path Forward. The result is a comprehensive, robust report that makes 43 recommendations, all of which I accept and am committed to implementing. Today, I invite all of you to join me and the vice-presidents on Tuesday, September 17 at 2:30 pm in the Manitoba Room, UMSU University Centre, where I will share the report and discuss the first steps to engaging the University community in moving forward on the recommendations. I am pleased to add that Ms. Van Iderstine has agreed to join us for this community session to explain the process underpinning the report. The entire report will be made available online immediately after the session. Roadway construction on the Fort Garry campus

Possible Winnipeg Transit Work Stoppage

As you may have seen in the media, there is the potential for a Winnipeg transit work stoppage (no deadline has been set), which could impact those who rely on the service to commute to and from campus. Please note that in the event of a strike, classes and other operations of the University will continue. The University respects the bargaining process between the City of Winnipeg and the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1505. As we await further updates we have begun planning for various contingencies. In the event of a work stoppage, we will be asking students, faculty and staff to find alternative ways to come to campus (such as car pools, Go-Manitoba Ride Share, bikes, etc.). New UM website launches Aug 8!

We’ve been working hard with members of our university community, including students, to build a new web experience tailored for you! Among the first pages you’ll see are those designed to help you make the most of campus life, including admissions information, student supports, getting involved and community events. No matter where or how you access our new site, you’ll find it responsive, mobile-friendly and easy to navigate across any device, including desktop, tablet and phone. You’ll also notice our new logo and other visual elements from our new brand that reflect our colourful, vibrant and inclusive UM community. The new site is the result of extensive consultation with our community, including current, new and prospective students. Power Outage on The Fort Garry Campus

Please be advised<https://news.umanitoba.ca/power-outage-on-fort-garry-campus-2/> that a power outage is affecting the Administration Building, UMSU University Centre, parts of the Education Building and the Science Complex (Duff Roblin, Machray Hall, Buller, Allen, Parker and MIM buildings). As a result, some student services are affected including the Registrar's Office and all other services housed in UMSU University Centre<http://umanitoba.ca/campus/uc.html>. This outage is also affecting Telephone and Network Services across campus. Physical Plant technicians are working to resolve the issue and expect power to be restored to all buildings by the end of the day. Introducing our new logo - Message from David T. Barnard, President and Vice-Chancellor, University of Manitoba

Dear students, Universities have stories to tell: about who they are, their values, their priorities. At the University of Manitoba, we are all a part of that story, and our visual identity - the look and feel of the materials we produce - provides us with a recognizable vehicle with which to express ourselves and connect with those who care about us and the work we do. That visual identity, like the other components of our collective story, occasionally requires refreshing. Over time, we evolve, we grow, we change. And so do our story and the means of telling that story. Today, the launch of our new brand begins with the introduction of a new logo. Watch it here: https://vimeo.com/umanitoba/logointroduction When we started down this road a year ago, many of you shared your ideas and perspectives. Thank you for this. Our journey has been one of thoughtful dialogue and exchange. A logo has been developed that reflects who we are, acknowledges our past, and also, most importantly, looks forward to our future, to who we can and want to be. In particular, I am pleased that the new logo has been informed by Indigenous perspectives, true to this university's vision statement. In the accompanying video, you will see and hear from some participants who brought their voice to the brand development process. They worked closely together and with others involved in this process challenged this institution to deliver a logo that is authentic, powerful and resonant. In the coming days and weeks, you will see our new logo revealed. My sincere hope is that all of us who are a part of the University of Manitoba community find something in the new visual expression that speaks to our understanding of this transformative institution. Celebrate Pride 2019

Good morning, The University of Manitoba is proud to continue being a supporter of the Pride Winnipeg Festival and Parade, and I invite and encourage all members of the University community, including our alumni and friends, to participate in the events and walk with us in the Pride Parade on Sunday, June 2. The University of Manitoba is committed to creating an outstanding learning and work environment and building a culture of inclusion on our campuses. Many members of the U of M family count themselves as members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community and we are working to ensure that the University of Manitoba is a place where the queer community is welcomed and successful.
