Mario Pinto, Vice-President (Research and International) [A blue background with white text Description automatically generated] Dear UM Community, I’m pleased to share with you Change Through Research: University of Manitoba Strategic Research Plan 2024-2029<https://umanitoba.ca/research/strategic-research-plan>. This bold plan outlines our key areas of expertise for maximum impact by providing solutions to society’s most pressing challenges. The plan outlines seven themes that will guide UM research over the next five-year period: * Foundations * Social Justice and Human Rights * Research by, for, and with Indigenous Peoples * Water and Food Security * Health and Well-Being * Climate Action and Sustainability * Manitoba, Hudson Bay, Arctic and the World These interconnected themes will promote the overarching mission of transforming research culture, advancing understanding and creating positive societal impact. We have set ambitious goals to position UM researchers as leaders in new and critical areas, including being in the Top 200 in the world and the Top 10 in Canada in the Center for World University Rankings, in the top 251-300 in the Times Higher Education Rankings and in the top 100 in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. UM will make any necessary repairs to the landscaping in order to return the Quad to the community for regular use. UM leadership is committed to supporting a welcoming campus environment for all students and community members. We respect the right to peaceful assembly in ways that do not infringe upon the right to access public space by other student groups or impede the functioning of the university, including unauthorized occupation of university property. As we move forward, we remind everyone to demonstrate kindness and compassion with one another, and to appreciate the diversity of our community. Universities must remain places for meaningful and respectful debate, and UM is committed to serving as a space to explore complex issues of local and global importance. Informed by community consultations and MOMENTUM: Leading Change Together 2024-2029<https://umanitoba.ca/strategic-plan>, this draft framework outlines the vision, mission and shared values, which has guided the Reconciliation Advisory Committee in its work. Before the Reconciliation Advisory Committee moves forward with presenting the final framework to Senate and the Board of Governors for approval, we invite you to read and share your feedback on this important document. This framework will guide our shared work over the next five years. We want to ensure that it resonates and that the diversity of voices and perspectives that strengthen our UM community are reflected in the framework. Encampment Update - May 10

[cid:image001.png@01DAA2DC.FE8E62A0] Hello UM community, Late last week, we learned that Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) was planning a protest encampment at the Fort Garry campus on May 7-9. Student Affairs and Security Services both immediately reached out to SJP to discuss the expectation that the event remain peaceful. Since the start of the protest on Tuesday morning, Security Services has been on site to monitor the situation and ensure a safe environment. Although SJP publicly communicated their intention to remove the encampment as planned, tents remained last night, and a protest continues today. There are now also plans for outside groups to protest at the Fort Garry campus on Saturday, which has resulted in the very unfortunate cancellation of Science Rendezvous. Global student experience See the world while earning credits toward your degree through the UM Student Exchange program! We have partnerships with 50 international institutions<https://umanitoba.ca/international/student-exchange-program#where-can-i-stu…> in over 20 destinations. UM students pay regular tuition to the University of Manitoba while studying abroad, and usually receive full credits for courses taken at partner universities. Applications for Winter 2025 and Summer 2025 exchanges close May 15, 2024. Weekly Wednesday Conversation Group for International Students The International Centre<https://umanitoba.ca/current-students/international> is hosting a weekly conversation group for international students during the summer and all students are welcome. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about Canadian culture and how to adapt to life in Manitoba, get tips for making connections on campus, and practice your Canadian "small talk". The sessions are every Wednesday from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. Meet at the International Centre, Room 541 UMSU University Centre, and explore campus with new meeting locations every week. Stay active with Rec Services Don't put your health and wellness on hold this summer! Even if you're not taking courses, you can still access the UM Sport and Recreation facilities during the Summer Term. Campus beautification day The annual University of Manitoba Campus Beautification Day<https://umanitoba.ca/facilities/campus-beautification-day> festivities take place May 23, 28 and June 6 at Bannatyne campus, Fort Garry campus, and William Norrie, respectively. Students are welcome to participate! Campus Beautification Day offers opportunities for our campus community to gather for gardening activities, music, and free lunch. Gardening begins at 9:00 a.m. and goes until noon for all three locations, followed by a barbeque. The entire university community is invited to join in the planting while connecting and getting some fresh air.
