WRHA Red Measles Advisory (Fort Garry Campus)

This message is sent to all students on behalf of the University of Manitoba, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and Manitoba Health. The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) and Manitoba Health have contacted the University of Manitoba with information concerning possible exposure to red measles on Thursday, March 20, 2014, at specific times and locations on the Fort Garry Campus. Please see the attached bulletin for information provided directly by the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. Below is the update from Manitoba Health. PUBLIC HEALTH UPDATE: SECOND CASE OF MEASLES REPORTED IN MANITOBA Public health officials confirmed today that a second laboratory-confirmed case of measles has been reported in Manitoba. This update is sent as a precautionary warning for those who may have been in contact with the person who is currently ill. In addition, a letter providing information on the current situation and preventive measures will be distributed through schools and daycare centres today. The case is a man in his '20s who lives in the area of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. This individual was in direct contact with the first case of measles identified in Manitoba earlier this month. Symptoms of measles generally appear seven to 21 days after exposure. Initial symptoms may include fever, runny nose, drowsiness, irritability and red eyes. Small white spots may also develop on the inside of the mouth or throat. Several days after the initial symptoms, a red blotchy rash appears on the face and progresses down the body. Measles can lead to complications including ear infections, diarrhea, pneumonia (lung infection) and encephalitis (brain inflammation). Measles is spread through droplets in the air formed when coughing or sneezing. An infected person can spread the virus from four days before the rash appears to four days after. The disease tends to be more severe in infants and young children, and can be life-threatening. Provincial public health officials are working with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority to investigate the case and identify contacts. People who were at the following locations and events should be aware of the possibility of infection: University of Manitoba, March 20, at the following locations and times: - St. Paul's College, Room 215 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; - Machray Hall, Room 418 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.; - EITC-E2, Room 105 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.; - Frank Kennedy study hall, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. and from 5:15 p.m. to 8 p.m.; and Concordia Hospital emergency department, March 22 between 10:15 p.m. and 10:40 p.m. Those who visited these locations and who think they might have measles or have been in close contact with someone who has been diagnosed with measles should phone their health-care provider or Health Links-Info Santé at 788-8200 or 1-888-315-9257 (toll-free) for more information. Where appropriate, people will be offered immunization and may be asked to remain at home and minimize contact with others to reduce the possible spread of measles. Public health officials will continue to monitor the situation in Manitoba and will provide updated information as necessary. If visiting a physician or health-care provider, it is best to call ahead and make an appointment so health-care staff can take steps to reduce the exposure of other people to the virus. Immunization is the best means of protecting yourself and your family. Contact an immunization provider such as a physician, nurse practitioner or local public health office to make sure you and your family are up to date. In Manitoba, a measles immunization program was first established in 1967. In 1996, the current two-dose measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccine program was introduced. Vaccines are provided for children who are at least one year of age and a second dose is given when aged four to six. The effectiveness of a single dose of measles vaccine given at 12 or 15 months of age is estimated to be 85 to 95 per cent. With a second dose, efficacy is almost 100 per cent. Adults born before 1970 are generally presumed to have acquired natural immunity to measles, however, some of these individuals may be susceptible. Adults born in 1970 or later who do not have a record showing they received a measles vaccine, or who have a history of laboratory confirmed measles infection, should be immunized with one dose of MMR. In Canada, measles activity is currently being reported by British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario, mostly related to ongoing outbreaks in the Philippines and the Netherlands. To reduce the spread of measles, people can: - ensure immunizations are up to date, - wash their hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available, - avoid sharing drinking glasses or eating utensils, - cover coughs and sneezes with the forearm or a tissue, and - stay home when sick. DAFOE ROAD CLOSURE - Active Living Centre - March 29th & 30th, 2014

Vehicular and pedestrian traffic on Dafoe Road from University Crescent east to Service Road #39 will be closed to thru traffic starting Saturday March 29, 2014 @ 06:00 am and will reopen on Sunday March 30 @ 18:00. During the closure local traffic will be permitted via Freedman Crescent and Maclean Crescent. This closure is required for the dismantling and removal of the tower crane currently used at the new Active Living Centre. In preparation for the above road closure and in conjunction with other work relating to the Active Living Centre, the north sidewalk only along Dafoe Rd. from University Crescent up to but not including the School of Music Building will be closed to pedestrian traffic starting Wednesday March 26, 2014 until further notice. Check your fee assessment after making changes to your registration; any fees resulting from changes are due January 17. Fee Payment: * Students with outstanding fees after the January 7 fee payment deadline have already been assessed late fees. * Students should review their fee assessment after any registration changes made during the Revision Period. * A further $40 late fee will be applied to accounts outstanding after January 17 and students will be placed on Hold. To all U of M students: This message includes important information for students writing exams during the December 2013 Exam Period. The Schedule of Final Exams for the December 2013 Exam series, including room and seat assignments*, is available. Please note: 1. Students are encouraged to review the exam schedule for: * Conflicts: If a conflict exists within the Schedule of Final Exams, you must notify the Registrar's Office immediately - this includes exams scheduled three-in-a-row (i.e. Monday evening, Tuesday morning and afternoon). * Changes: Check the schedule again before your exam dates for any changes. 2. Remember that students must remain available until all exam and test obligations are complete. Travel plans are not an acceptable reason for missing an exam. 3. Photo identification must be brought to the exam. Bring your Student Photo ID Card (preferred) or another piece of photo identification. 4. The U of M has changed its Examination Regulations. Some of these changes include: * Deferred Exams: o New 48-hour limit for deferred exam requests - requests must be received by the faculty/school office within 48-hours from the scheduled exam date. o Retroactive deferral requests - these are granted only for specific situations in which a student is unexpectedly unable to complete their exam; students must speak to the exam invigilator prior to leaving the exam. * Exam conflict arrangements: o Arrangements made for exam conflicts due to specific athletic, academic or religious obligations will now be made in the students' faculty/school office, as per the Deferred Exam Procedure. [MALWARE WARNING] - Cryptolocker Ransomware

MALWARE WARNING – Cryptolocker Ransomware Many of you may have heard of a recent threat, referred to as "Cryptolocker Ransomware". This is an extremely dangerous type of malware that has impacted several thousand systems around the world. We have had one reported incident on campus this week, so it is important that all users are aware of the threat. The malware encrypts files on an infected system, then demands payment from the victim in order to decrypt and recover the files. The primary means of infection is via phishing emails with malicious attachments. The emails may claim to be from your bank, or claim to be a tracking message from a delivery company, such as FedEx or UPS. PREVENTION We are currently seeing several blocked messages related to this attack on our Ironport (Exchange) and Spamhaus (CC Mail) filters. But tactics to bypass filters can change without notice. Be cautious with email on any account (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, QQ, Facebook, etc…) DO NOT follow unsolicited web links in messages and be cautious with all email attachments. When in doubt contact the Help Desk for assistance. LOWER YOUR RISK! * Perform regular backups of important files and store this data in a secure offline location. * Keep your operating system and application software up to date with the latest patches. * Maintain up-to-date anti-virus software. New Active Living Centre Revised - Monday November 25 - January 25 inclusive. The tower crane on the new Active Living Centre will be lifting steel from a flatbed truck parked on the north bound curb lane of University Crescent and onto the Active Living site at Dafoe Road. During the time of any overhead lifting, the sidewalk along University Crescent will be closed for a short period of time and flagmen will redirect or stop pedestrians. New Active Living Centre Friday November 15 - January 25 inclusive. The tower crane on the new Active Living Centre will be lifting steel from a flatbed truck parked on the north bound curb lane of University Crescent and onto the Active Living site at Dafoe Road. During the time of any overhead lifting, the sidewalk along University Crescent will be closed for a short period of time and flagmen will redirect or stop pedestrians. This will be intermittent throughout the period. Saturday November 16 from 8:30AM to noon the curb lane on Dafoe Road westbound and adjacent to the Active Living construction site will be closed. There will be no access restrictions for those travelling to and from campus on foot, by bike or by bus. This dedicated entrance is for U of M permit holders only, providing a shorter, easier route of entry. For the past 77 years, The Bulletin has provided a forum where we could share stories and information about the people, places and events that make our university such a vibrant and exciting place. Today, we say a fond farewell with a special commemorative edition that you can find at various locations on our campuses. I want to thank all of you for giving us so many good stories to tell over the years. The Bulletin has been the equivalent of our village square, the place that gave us our community connection and chronicled our events, success and progress. Thank you and congratulations to the editors, writers, photographers, as well as faculty and staff contributors who worked so hard over the decades to tell those stories. Our current staff will continue to provide that information in a different forum when we launch UM Today, a dynamic, interactive and mobile-friendly news website. You will hear more about this service to our community in the days ahead. We hope this special edition provides an opportunity to celebrate and honour this newspaper that has been witness to many changes to our community and has served us all so well. The three-year agreement reached late last night resolves all major issues; remaining differences will be decided through an arbitration process. The agreement provides long-term stability and certainty that will allow us to focus on our core mission of learning, discovery and engagement. I recognize that these negotiations created uncertainty among students and I want to thank them for their patience as we worked our way through the process. I also appreciate the hard work and dedication of our faculty and staff and I am pleased we were able reach a fair settlement that demonstrates the flexibility of all parties and allows us to move forward in a spirit of mutual respect. President Barnard's statement on negotiations with UMFA

A message from David T. Barnard, President & Vice-Chancellor, University of Manitoba I am disappointed that the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) leadership appears set on taking strike action next week. A strike will be harmful to our students and, indeed, the entire community. Let me assure you that we are doing everything we can to avoid a disruptive and unnecessary strike. The University of Manitoba has offered our faculty a four-year agreement with an 8.9 per cent salary increase. It is important that we compensate our faculty fairly and competitively. Our proposed four-year agreement would ensure long-term stability and certainty for our students. I want to be clear that we have not put forward anything in this bargaining process that would erode the academic freedom enjoyed by our faculty. We have not proposed a performance management system for UMFA members. Nor have we introduced any restrictions on research for UMFA members. We have suggested moving to binding arbitration to take the threat of a strike off the table. Arbitration would ensure the uninterrupted continuation of the academic year. This process would require UMFA and the University to present their cases to a third-party who would have the authority to mandate an agreement. In a show of good faith, the University of Manitoba expressed its willingness to use a person UMFA had recommended to act as an intermediary, to serve as an arbitrator. Unfortunately, UMFA leadership rejected this offer. Accepting this offer would have avoided a strike and enabled students to continue an uninterrupted academic year. We strongly encourage UMFA leadership to accept our offer to resolve this dispute through arbitration so as to avoid an unnecessary strike. Let's put our positions before an independent arbitrator, call off the strike and continue building an excellent university. Our students deserve nothing less. I also encourage the entire university community to review all of the information available including our rationale document that was provided to UMFA leaders in September. The University of Manitoba remains committed to bargaining in good faith and will work diligently to prevent any disruption to students. I remain hopeful, even at this eleventh hour, that we can reach an agreement, or at least a process, that allows us to move forward without disrupting our students and the university community. This means if an agreement between UMFA and the University cannot be reached by Monday, October 21, that a strike could begin on Tuesday. While we are disappointed that a strike date was set one day prior to the start of the conciliation process, we remain committed to seeking a settlement with UMFA through conciliation that will not disrupt your learning and success. Plan to attend your classes as usual, as we don't know yet what effect a strike will have on class schedules, mid-term exams or final papers. As soon as information becomes available, it will be posted on the website umanitoba.ca/strikeinfo (which will be live in the next 24 hours) and any major updates will be communicated to you by all-student email. [cid:image001.jpg@01CEC4DE.C0FA5C60] Dear Students, Many of you are aware that the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA), representing 1,250 faculty members, instructors, and librarians, has asked its members to vote on possible strike action. That vote took place October 7 - 9, and the results may be made known by UMFA on October 10. In this era of social media, we are hearing from many of you that you want to know more about what's happening and what it might mean to you, so we have decided to come forward now with what information we can share: * No strike deadline has been set * Classes continue as scheduled * The University has asked for a conciliator to help the parties reach an agreement * The University is doing all it can to avoid a strike * We will answer all questions students may have as soon as possible * Important information will be shared with you through all-students emails The University is doing its best to reach a settlement and avoid a strike. To that end, the University of Manitoba asked the Province this week to appoint a conciliator to help us negotiate a settlement. We are not content with the impasse that negotiations have reached; we want to keep the discussion going so that we can reach a settlement. We hope to be able to meet with UMFA and a conciliator this week or next. We remain hopeful that the conciliator will succeed in bringing the parties to an agreement. The University of Manitoba has made a competitive salary offer. The University of Manitoba values the tremendous contribution faculty make to this institution and recognizes the need to compensate them competitively if we are to attract and retain the best. We are offering UMFA a four-year agreement with salary increases of 2.9 per cent in the first year, and 2 per cent in each of the following three years. That is an 8.9 per cent increase over four years. There are additional financial improvements in the University's offer, as communicated on the University's website. The University of Manitoba has suggested a four-year agreement. UMFA is seeking a two-year agreement, with a 5.8 per cent increase over those two years. We believe a four-year agreement would offer the University community relative stability with respect to its academic function for at least four years. Further, if the length of the four-year contract is standing in the way of reaching a settlement, we have offered to reduce the term to three years, consistent with the duration of all recent UMFA contracts. There has not been a two-year contract for decades, and a short contract would perpetuate the uncertainty that students face over this bargaining process. The University of Manitoba did not propose that any rights presently enjoyed by faculty members be changed. We did not propose the addition of any new language or the removal of existing language around academic freedom. We believe the current language which has been in place for 40 years has served and continues to serve the community well, and reflects our strong commitment to academic freedom. The decision whether to strike or not to strike remains with UMFA. Although UMFA members have voted this week on whether to grant UMFA a strike mandate, UMFA has not made known to the University any strike deadline. That means that right now the academic year proceeds normally. There is no strike date set. We expect that we would receive fair notice from UMFA should a strike date be set. It is certainly not this week. At this point, we can say that - it warrants repeating - we are still working to avoid a strike, but in the event of a strike, we will do everything we can to minimize the impact of a strike on your academic success. We understand how troubling the uncertainty can be, but at this point it is very difficult to know what we would be facing. Past faculty strikes here and around the country have presented numerous scenarios, with varying start dates, durations, levels of support, and so on. We can also state that no Canadian University has ever cancelled a term because of a faculty strike, and that includes the 2011 Brandon University strike that lasted 47 days. We understand that as students you would like to know more, but we simply cannot provide a higher level of detail at this point because of our obligations to UMFA and the bargaining process. Rest assured, however, that, in the event of a strike, beyond continuing to work to reach an agreement, communicating with you will be our priority. We will answer your questions in a timely fashion. However, remember that it is difficult to foresee the circumstances presented by any individual strike, so please pay close attention to future communications from the University on this matter. We will update you again as soon as possible. I hope very much that the next update can be an announcement of a settlement, but if it is not, it will contain every possible detail we can share with you. UMFA Bargaining Update (September 30, 2013)

[Paul Kochan header] September 30, 2013 To: All Employees and All Students The University of Manitoba began contract negotiations with the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) in June, 2013. A new agreement has not yet been reached. The existing contract between the University of Manitoba and UMFA expired at the end of March, 2013. In 2010, the University and UMFA were able to reach a settlement in September without third party intervention. The University of Manitoba is committed to achieving a timely settlement. On August 16, 2013 we presented an offer to UMFA that included a generous salary position. We have offered UMFA members an 8.9 per cent salary increase over a four-year contract (2.9 per cent in Year 1, and 2 per cent in each of Years 2, 3 and 4) - this in a time of wage restraint across the broader public sector and within the post-secondary sector in particular. In addition to the 8.9 per cent increase, the University is proposing specific base salary adjustments for some ranks based on market comparisons, and structural revisions to the salary scales that result in higher maxima and increment values across all ranks. We want to attract and retain the best faculty and provide competitive salaries. We believe our monetary offer demonstrates our commitment to our faculty members, and to resolving this round of bargaining without a work stoppage. A salary calculator that allows UMFA members to calculate their salary over the next four years in accordance with the University of Manitoba's monetary offer is available at the Current Bargaining Update web page off the University of Manitoba homepage (umanitoba.ca). Simply find "Bargaining Update - Sep. 30/13" under "Updates", click and you will be taken to a page that includes the salary calculator. The direct url is: (http://umanitoba.ca/admin/human_resources/staff_relations/bargaining/academ…). The University of Manitoba has presented to UMFA its comprehensive position on all issues. UMFA has responded with only slight changes to its previous position, including holding to its proposal for a short-term agreement of one year or at most two years. UMFA has informed the University that it will be going to its members to call a strike vote. In these circumstances, the University felt it was important to share with its community the issues that stand in the way of an agreement. We did not propose that any rights presently enjoyed by faculty members be changed. We did not propose the addition of any new language or the removal of existing language around academic freedom. We believe the current language which has been in place for 40 years has served and continues to serve the community well, and reflects our strong commitment to academic freedom. We have not proposed the addition of an article on performance management. The only proposals we have made on these issues have been in response to UMFA demands. For example, we have proposed under the sections addressing tenure and promotion criteria that "no prescribed list of journals or other venues for publication, and no dollar amounts for research funding may be established or taken into consideration without consultation with faculty council." We have further added a clause under "Faculty Rights and Obligations" that explicitly states that faculty members have the right to comment on the University and on their Association. We have listened to and understand UMFA's position on recent University of Manitoba administrative initiatives such as Concur and print management, though we do not agree these matters belong in a collective agreement. We continue to believe that these new programs and processes are in the best interests of the University community and we will continue to consult with faculty and other members of the University of Manitoba community, listening and acting on their constructive input to make these initiatives a success. The savings generated by the innovations have helped put the University in a position to make the scale of offer it has for salaries. We are disappointed that UMFA has indicated our salary offer and our desire to keep the current language of the collective agreement with respect to academic freedom and other issues is not enough, and will seek a strike mandate from its membership. However, the University of Manitoba is committed to working to prevent any disruptions for our students, faculty and other staff and will continue to seek a settlement with UMFA through collegial and respectful negotiations. We are also committed to keeping all stakeholders informed as this process moves forward. Tests conducted on site have all proven negative. The item has been taken away for further analysis (as an additional safety precaution) before destruction by Province of Manitoba Environmental Compliance and Enforcement agency. Police indicate that there is no cause for concern to the University of Manitoba community. Vehicle access to the Fort Garry campus and on-campus parking restrictions will begin at 5:30 p.m., while traffic set-up could begin as early as 4:30 p.m. Please watch for signage indicating traffic flow changes as you enter and exit campus. Once again, there are no access restrictions for those travelling to and from campus on foot, by bike or by bus. Those students, staff and faculty members travelling to campus by car between 5:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. will require a valid U of M parking permit and must enter via Kings Drive. This dedicated entrance is for U of M permit holders only, providing a shorter, easier route of entry. After 5:30 p.m., permit holders wishing to access campus via University Crescent or Chancellor Matheson will be rerouted to the Kings Drive entrance. The University of Manitoba will not cancel/de-register students from current term courses for non-payment. Fall 2013 tuition fees are now available on Aurora Student! Information Services & Technology would like to inform you of a planned telephone maintenance from 8PM on Wednesday, July 17 to 1AM on Thursday, July 18. This maintenance will impact all telephone services on both campuses. Between 8PM and midnight there will be a four minute outage of all IP phone sets at both campuses. At approximately midnight, there will be a five minute outage. During this time the phone services that will be impacted are: No 911 service from a university phone No 555 service No local calls No long distance calls No voice mail service No internal calls on campus Code Blue stations will not work Elevator emergency phones will not work Panic alarms may not work. In the case of an emergency please call 911 from a CELLULAR phone. For non-emergency assistance please call University of Manitoba Security at 269-3363 from a CELLULAR phone. Many improvements, including dedicated bus lanes, have been made by the City of Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Football Club over the past week in an effort to keep traffic moving to and from Investors Group Field. Some congestion is still to be expected, however, and those travelling to the University of Manitoba to work, study or attend class, are asked to plan their route accordingly. Some things to remember are: 1. Parking restrictions begin at 6 p.m. but football fans are expected to arrive earlier. The Event Day Transportation and Parking Plan goes into effect 90 minutes before the opening ceremonies begin at 7:30 p.m. Winnipeg Football Club personnel will be out helping guide early incoming traffic to appropriate parking lots. 2. Vehicles with U of M parking permits can park in assigned lots beginning at 4:30 p.m. Those vehicles with U of M parking permits can begin parking in the assigned U of M lots beginning at 4:30 p.m. and must be vacated from all other lots by 6 p.m. The assigned lots for U of M permit parkers are: A Lot, B Lot, L Lot, AC Lot (southeast corner of Freedman Crescent), CTC Lot at the Crop Technology Centre 3. Vehicles without a valid parking pass must move off campus by 6 p.m. Parking permits are not required between 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. in most university parking lots, however all vehicles without a U of M parking permit must be moved off campus by 6 p.m. 4. Kings Drive entrance is reserved after 6 p.m. for U of M students, faculty and staff. Students, faculty and staff with U of M parking permits are asked to enter and exit the campus via Kings Drive beginning at 6 p.m. Having a dedicated entrance is intended to cut down on wait times for members of the U of M community when accessing or exiting campus. We are encouraging accessing campus for parking as well as drop offs thru Kings Drive prior to 6 p.m. to avoid any early Event Day traffic. 5. Winnipeg Transit will be running as scheduled. Winnipeg Transit has increased its fleet to and from the University. Regularly scheduled buses will continue to stop on campus before, during and after the game. Winnipeg Transit will monitor and add buses to the regularly scheduled routes as required. 6. City of Winnipeg Traffic Services As early as 3:30 you will see City of Winnipeg Traffic Services setting up traffic flow changes for the event. Winnipeg Police Services will be assisting with traffic control beginning at 4:30 p.m. on University Crescent. We are working to ensure that students, staff and faculty who are scheduled to be on campus during an event can access and exit from campus in an efficient way. We ask for your patience, as well as your input, as we continue to improve the event day experience for members of our community. We believe this national research centre will help our country advance on a path of reconciliation and healing. The University of Manitoba offers a strong commitment to Indigenous students, a powerful educational role in challenging settler attitudes to facilitate reconciliation and a central geographic location. Innovative digital technologies will allow survivors, scholars and others to use the records to tell many stories: the story of residential school survivors, of families, of communities, of schools, of regions and of the country. The collection of archives and testimonies truly belongs to survivors, their families and their communities. We will strive to ensure accessibility to all users but especially to survivors and their families, so they can learn about their history and the history of their communities. This National Research Centre will be made available to scholars from our university, our province, our country and around the world. Our goal is to ensure this centre is used by as many people as possible. We want teachers to share these stories with students and parents to share stories with their children. Since many of our most important and poignant lessons come from our children, I believe all of us can learn from the unique insight they will gain and share from accessing this National Research Centre. During Truth and Reconciliation Commission national and regional events, we have heard the heartbreaking accounts from survivors about the devastating impact that the Indian Residential School System had on their lives. We all have a responsibility to acknowledge that our national government devised a system that took children from their families and attempted to rob First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples of their languages, their cultures and their communities. This action resulted in the governments of Canada and Manitoba issuing statements of apology, as well as churches that operated schools, including Roman Catholic, Anglican, Presbyterian and United. In October 2011, the University of Manitoba was the first post-secondary education institution in Canada to offer its statement of apology and reconciliation. We failed to recognize or challenge the forced assimilation of Aboriginal peoples and the subsequent loss of their language, culture and traditions. We apologize and it remains our intention, having said the words of apology, to move to reconciliation. As part of our role in achieving reconciliation, the University of Manitoba is working with a variety of partners to make Manitoba the national centre for Indigenous education and research. Schools need to be places where First Nations, Metis and Inuit students are safe and feel accepted and welcome. For reconciliation to occur, it is our shared responsibility to make that happen. Together we can ensure Indigenous students are prepared for and can achieve educational success in the full range of academic programs we offer. It is my sincere hope that we can enable the final chapter of our national story, yet to be written, to be one that is inspiring, positive and full of hope - one where Indigenous peoples are full participants in all schools, universities, workplaces and public institutions. First Concert at Investors Group Field - June 22

The show begins at 6:30 p.m. with the Event Day Transportation and Parking Plan going into effect at 5 p.m. While Taylor Swift fans may begin arriving on campus earlier in the afternoon, regular weekend parking rules will apply until 5 p.m. At that time, those with valid U of M parking permits are asked to move their vehicles to the following designated lots: * A Lot * B Lot * L Lot * AC Lot (southeast corner of Freedman Crescent) * CTC Lot at the Crop Technology Centre * D Lot (June-August only) * R Lot (June-August only) U of M regular and casual parking permit holders who are coming or going from campus between 5 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. Saturday night are asked to use the dedicated entrance at Kings Drive. This entrance is for U of M regular and casual parking permit holders only and is intended to make accessing and leaving campus faster and easier for staff and students. Winnipeg Transit will also be adding extra buses to the following Regular Transit Routes beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 22 to accommodate access to the University: * Route 60 Pembina * Route 75 Crosstown East * Route 78 Crosstown West * Route 161 "Extras" The next event at Investors Group Field is the Winnipeg Blue Bombers home opener on Thursday, June 27. Casual Parking Passes for Students, Faculty and Staff on Event Days

Both events welcomed thousands of people from across the city, province and country to our campus, showing off our world-class facilities. The June 12 Bomber game at Investors Group Field saw the Event Day Transportation and Parking Plan enacted for the first time. We learned a great deal after that event and are moving forward to ensure that event days are an enjoyable experience for those student, staff and faculty who are attending a class or exam, or teaching on campus. Over the last several weeks, I have heard from students, faculty and staff who expressed interest in an evening and weekend parking option for non-permit holders on event days. In an effort to make parking more accessible during the year's remaining events, Event Day casual parking passes will now be available for students, faculty and staff who are attending a class or exam, or teaching on campus during an event. These passes will cost $4 per spot, per event, and will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis. We will continue to evaluate the processes after each Event Day. Student Passes: Students who are registered for a class or exam that is scheduled when the Event Day Transportation and Parking Plan is in effect can purchase a casual parking pass at Parking Services, which is located in the Welcome Centre on University Crescent. Please remember that the Parking Services office is closed on weekends. Students who are registered for one of these classes or exams will receive an email a minimum of one week prior to each event day with further details about parking passes. Those with valid U of M parking passes will continue to have access to select university lots, also on a first-come, first-served basis. Staff and Faculty Passes: A request for an Event Day casual parking pass for $4 on the Southwood Lands can be made to eventparking(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:eventparking@umanitoba.ca>. Please include the event date, number of passes required, name of the signing authority of the department and FOAP in the email. Transit: The university has been in regular meetings with the Winnipeg Football Club and City of Winnipeg to make sure that traffic flow to and from events at Investors Group Field does not impede transit access to campus for students, faculty and staff. Kings Drive Entrance: A dedicated entrance and exit has been established at Kings Drive for U of M parkers, both Event Day casual parking pass and regular permit holders. A dedicated entrance ensures that U of M students and staff can bypass the lengthy lines that are anticipated at both the University Crescent and Chancellor Matheson entrances. Manitoba Marathon - Sunday, June 16th

To: All Staff and All Students The annual Manitoba Marathon is being held Sunday, June 16th, 2013. Again this year, the 2.6 mile Super Run will follow the ring road around campus between 7:00am and 9:00am. The Super Run route begins in front of the Max Bell Centre, heads north, and turns immediately onto Sifton Rd and follows the Dysart and the ring road to Freedman Crescent, University Crescent, Chancellor Matheson then finishes at the Pan Am stadium. To accommodate the Super Run as well as the regular half and full marathon routes, you should take note of the following campus access route closures: * 5:00 am University Crescent closed to vehicle traffic from Pembina Highway to Dafoe Road. The crescent will re-open around 2:00 pm. * 5:00 am Chancellor Matheson closed to vehicle traffic (except buses). Investors Group Field opens doors for first event, Sunday, May 26

This email is sent on behalf of Andrew Konowalchuk, Associate Vice-President (Administration) To: All Students On Sunday, May 26, 2013, Investors Group Field will open its doors for its first official event, the One Heart Service, which begins at 11:30 a.m. Access to campus and on-campus parking will not be restricted and personnel will be on hand to manage traffic flow and ensure safety concerns are dealt with. There are 12 other major events scheduled to take place at Investors Group Field this year. During those events, access to campus and on-campus parking will follow the Event Day Transportation and Parking Plan. This plan was created in partnership with the City of Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Football Club to ensure minimal disruptions for members of our campus community. To find out more about the Event Day Transportation and Parking Plan, including links to interactive maps and information for transit riders, cyclists and pedestrians, please visit http://investorsgroupfield.ca/university/ To receive regular updates and reminders about event days via Twitter, follow @UMoutstanding. A number of other activities and events will be happening at the stadium in the coming weeks, many bringing new visitors to campus. These activities include: May 27 - Pyrotechnics testing will be ongoing from 9 a.m. to noon May 29-June 9 - Bomber season ticket pick-up June 2 - Bomber training camp begins The next event day is June 12, 2013 when the Bombers face Toronto for a pre-season game. Kick-off is 7 p.m. The University of Manitoba Bison Men's Football team will also be playing four home games in the new stadium, including the Homecoming game on September 28. Be part of a new era of football by coming out to support our team. I encourage all of you to take in an event at the new stadium. Suspicious Item found in Machray Hall

This morning, a suspicious item was found on the fourth floor of the Machray Hall Building. Winnipeg Police Service were contacted and removed the item. Winnipeg Police continue to investigate. The building has resumed normal operations.

Campus Beautification Day Invitation

This message is sent on behalf of Andrew Konowalchuk, Associate Vice-President (Administration) To: All Students RE: Campus Beautification Day Campus Beautification Day will be held on Thursday, May 23, 2013. This is the 16th year of this popular event which is made successful by the tremendous input of Physical Plant staff and the campus-wide effort of volunteers. Staff, students, faculty and retirees are invited to participate on a voluntary basis to help beautify the campus. Jobs such as picking up paper, raking, sweeping, pulling weeds and planting flowers will be identified. Each department is requested to designate a contact person who will be responsible for coordinating the volunteers from their department. The name, department, address and phone number of the contact person should be forwarded by Friday, May 3, 2013 to: campbeau(a)cc.umanitoba.ca. Physical Plant staff will be assigned to each zone to work with the contact people and to coordinate projects. A brown bag meeting of all contact people will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room, 210 University Centre, at noon on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 to provide details and distribute lunch tickets for Campus Beautification Day to department representatives. Event leaders will be introduced and light refreshments will be provided. On Campus Beautification Day, a barbecue lunch sponsored by ARAMARK will be held at noon in the quadrangle on the Fort Garry Campus and in front of the Brodie Centre on the Bannatyne Campus for all volunteers. Pepsi will be providing the refreshments. The Bookstore as well as various other businesses on Campus will be donating "door" prizes for the event. This year the Grand Prize is two airline tickets donated by WestJet. Teams are encouraged to propose projects either directly to campbeau(a)cc.umanitoba.ca or through communication with a zone leader. Photographs of the best gardens will highlighted on the Campus Beautification website at http://www.umanitoba.ca/campus/physical_plant/gensvcs/569.htm. Volunteers are asked to bring gloves, rakes and spades from home although some items will be provided by Physical Plant. The project will commence at 9:00 AM and continue throughout the day. Everyone is invited to participate for as much time as their schedules permit. In the event of rain on May 23, the rain date will be Friday, May 24, 2013 so please keep that date open as well. Together, the completion of Investors Group Field and the university's Active Living Centre (2015) will make the U of M home to some of the best sports and recreation facilities in Canada. The result will be superior spaces for personal fitness, professional training, collegiate sports and campus cultural events. These new spaces will also bring visitors to campus, for Winnipeg Blue Bomber games and for other major concerts and events. In an effort to ensure that event days are a positive experience for all of us, we have worked with the City of Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Football Club to create an event day plan that ensures minimal disruptions for the members of our campus community.
