Possible CAW labour action at the University of Manitoba

This email is sent on behalf of Alan Simms, Associate Vice-President (Administration) The collective agreement in place between the University of Manitoba and the 533 CAW (Canadian Auto Workers) Local 3007 workers - representing caretakers, food service workers, groundskeepers, skilled trades and powerhouse workers - has expired. Despite regular bargaining sessions between the union and the university, an agreement has not yet been reached. The University of Manitoba has presented the union with a proposal and remains hopeful that an agreement still will be achieved. The union has set a meeting for its membership for the evening of Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at which time it's possible they may decide to take strike action immediately. Strike action could occur therefore as early as 6:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 16, and there may be traffic delays getting to the University due to picketing activity. Classes will continue as scheduled. Libraries will remain open. Limited food services and custodial services will be available. U of M Sustainability Strategy and You

The University of Manitoba Sustainability Strategy and You! The University of Manitoba is committed to improving sustainability and operating in a way which respects and supports our environment. In an effort to become a leader in this regard and in keeping with the newly adopted Sustainability Policy, we are undertaking to develop a comprehensive Sustainability Strategy and we need your help to ensure this effort is a success. Since June, the University of Manitoba Sustainability Committee has been working on an action plan to develop the comprehensive Sustainability Strategy for the University that will set goals and actions with respect to campus operations, planning and community engagement. The action plan includes soliciting ideas and feedback from the University community. Over the next few months, the Committee will be reaching out to the community for assistance in the development of the strategy. There will be various opportunities for participation such as working groups, focus groups and surveys. We hope you will join us in one of these many opportunities. Your contribution to this process is critical and it will help to formulate a strategy that is relevant and meaningful to you and to the University of Manitoba community. Active Living Centre Open Houses

President David Barnard has identified enhancing the student experience as a major goal in the Strategic Planning Framework for the University of Manitoba. In keeping with this, we are very excited to be able to share with you the plans for the Active Living Centre. This 100,000 sq.ft Active Living Centre will be a world class fitness facility attached to the south side of the Frank Kennedy Centre at the corner of Dafoe Road and University Crescent. Repaying Your Student Loan(s)

Then it's time to take charge of your finances! Your government student loan(s) may come from the federal government and or your provincial/territorial government. This means you could have more than one loan to pay back. The National Student Loan Service Centre (NSLSC) will send your Consolidation Agreement by mail before you are required to start making payments. The Agreement sets the terms for the repayment of your Canada Student Loan; this is the federal portion of your loan. You'll have to make a number of decisions, including the type of interest rate and how long you'll take to repay your loan. Depending on your situation, you might also receive another Consolidation Agreement by mail for your provincial or territorial student loan. You don't have to make any payments on your student loan(s) for the first six months after you leave school; however, interest will be added to your Canada Student Loan during these six months. Angel maintenance December 28th and December 29th

During the Christmas break IST will be performing maintenance on the Angel course management system. This work is scheduled to being December 28th at 8:00 A.M. It should be concluded on December 29th by 3:00 P.M. This is a significant outage to a major resource.
