Investors Group Field opens doors for first event, Sunday, May 26

This email is sent on behalf of Andrew Konowalchuk, Associate Vice-President (Administration) To: All Students On Sunday, May 26, 2013, Investors Group Field will open its doors for its first official event, the One Heart Service, which begins at 11:30 a.m. Access to campus and on-campus parking will not be restricted and personnel will be on hand to manage traffic flow and ensure safety concerns are dealt with. There are 12 other major events scheduled to take place at Investors Group Field this year. During those events, access to campus and on-campus parking will follow the Event Day Transportation and Parking Plan. This plan was created in partnership with the City of Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Football Club to ensure minimal disruptions for members of our campus community. To find out more about the Event Day Transportation and Parking Plan, including links to interactive maps and information for transit riders, cyclists and pedestrians, please visit http://investorsgroupfield.ca/university/ To receive regular updates and reminders about event days via Twitter, follow @UMoutstanding. A number of other activities and events will be happening at the stadium in the coming weeks, many bringing new visitors to campus. These activities include: May 27 - Pyrotechnics testing will be ongoing from 9 a.m. to noon May 29-June 9 - Bomber season ticket pick-up June 2 - Bomber training camp begins The next event day is June 12, 2013 when the Bombers face Toronto for a pre-season game. Kick-off is 7 p.m. The University of Manitoba Bison Men's Football team will also be playing four home games in the new stadium, including the Homecoming game on September 28. Be part of a new era of football by coming out to support our team. I encourage all of you to take in an event at the new stadium. Suspicious Item found in Machray Hall

This morning, a suspicious item was found on the fourth floor of the Machray Hall Building. Winnipeg Police Service were contacted and removed the item. Winnipeg Police continue to investigate. The building has resumed normal operations.

Campus Beautification Day Invitation

This message is sent on behalf of Andrew Konowalchuk, Associate Vice-President (Administration) To: All Students RE: Campus Beautification Day Campus Beautification Day will be held on Thursday, May 23, 2013. This is the 16th year of this popular event which is made successful by the tremendous input of Physical Plant staff and the campus-wide effort of volunteers. Staff, students, faculty and retirees are invited to participate on a voluntary basis to help beautify the campus. Jobs such as picking up paper, raking, sweeping, pulling weeds and planting flowers will be identified. Each department is requested to designate a contact person who will be responsible for coordinating the volunteers from their department. The name, department, address and phone number of the contact person should be forwarded by Friday, May 3, 2013 to: campbeau(a)cc.umanitoba.ca. Physical Plant staff will be assigned to each zone to work with the contact people and to coordinate projects. A brown bag meeting of all contact people will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room, 210 University Centre, at noon on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 to provide details and distribute lunch tickets for Campus Beautification Day to department representatives. Event leaders will be introduced and light refreshments will be provided. On Campus Beautification Day, a barbecue lunch sponsored by ARAMARK will be held at noon in the quadrangle on the Fort Garry Campus and in front of the Brodie Centre on the Bannatyne Campus for all volunteers. Pepsi will be providing the refreshments. The Bookstore as well as various other businesses on Campus will be donating "door" prizes for the event. This year the Grand Prize is two airline tickets donated by WestJet. Teams are encouraged to propose projects either directly to campbeau(a)cc.umanitoba.ca or through communication with a zone leader. Photographs of the best gardens will highlighted on the Campus Beautification website at http://www.umanitoba.ca/campus/physical_plant/gensvcs/569.htm. Volunteers are asked to bring gloves, rakes and spades from home although some items will be provided by Physical Plant. The project will commence at 9:00 AM and continue throughout the day. Everyone is invited to participate for as much time as their schedules permit. In the event of rain on May 23, the rain date will be Friday, May 24, 2013 so please keep that date open as well. Together, the completion of Investors Group Field and the university's Active Living Centre (2015) will make the U of M home to some of the best sports and recreation facilities in Canada. The result will be superior spaces for personal fitness, professional training, collegiate sports and campus cultural events. These new spaces will also bring visitors to campus, for Winnipeg Blue Bomber games and for other major concerts and events. In an effort to ensure that event days are a positive experience for all of us, we have worked with the City of Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Football Club to create an event day plan that ensures minimal disruptions for the members of our campus community. Voluntary Withdrawal Deadline and Summer Session Registration

To all U of Manitoba students... Please note that all students were erroneously sent an email around 2:30 p.m. today, Monday March 11th, titled "Re: VW notice". We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion. Read below for information about the upcoming Winter Term VW deadline, and Summer Session Registration (which begins next week!). Winter Term 2013 Voluntary Withdrawal Deadline Reminder: The Voluntary Withdrawal Deadline for Winter Term Courses is Wednesday, March 20, 2012. The deadline for Voluntary Withdrawal from Fall/Winter Term and Winter Term courses taught during the standard term is Wednesday, March 20. Courses taught outside the standard term will have different VW deadlines - check with your faculty about these. VW's must be done through Aurora Student and can be done up to 11:59 PM. Are you On Hold? See further below for more information! Think before you drop... You may decide to VW from a class for a variety of reasons. Common situations include: * The course subject matter was not the same as originally expected; * Your overall course load is too demanding - withdrawing from one class will leave more time for others; * Your program focus has changed and the course is no longer required; * Your mid-term grades were not satisfactory - and you think withdrawing is better than receiving a low or failed grade. Before you decide to VW from a class, be sure to: * Talk with your course instructor about your concerns and if there are strategies for improvement before the end of term; * Talk to an academic advisor about your course load, study strategies, and options for possibly repeating the course later; * Be aware of course load requirements and implications of VW - if you have a government student loan, are a sponsored student, a Bison athlete or are in any other type of situation that requires a minimum course load; * Refer to the U1 Start Book or the UM Calendar to make sure you know where that course fits into your intended or current program; * Check to see if the course is required as a prerequisite for upper-level courses within your program; * Look at the Winter Term schedule to see if the course is offered again this year. Please contact an academic advisor to discuss your concerns and options. Note: If you are On Hold for outstanding tuition, library books, parking fines, etc. you will not be able to access the Registration function in Aurora to VW a course. If you are On Hold and plan to VW, you must either first clear your Hold so that you can access the Registration functions in Aurora, or you must contact your academic advising office for assistance in dropping the course. New: As part of the University of Manitoba's commitment to providing an excellent learning experience for students, we would like to know why you have chosen not to complete a course or courses. Students who choose to VW will be asked to complete a brief confidential survey on the reason(s) for withdrawal. The information gathered will help us to determine if there is information or resources that may have helped you complete your courses successfully. Registration for Summer Session 2013 Are you planning to take courses in Summer Session? Join the thousands of students who take advantage of Summer Session to lighten their load in fall & winter, finish their degree faster, enjoy smaller classes, or catch up on missed or failed courses. Here are some things to know if you are planning to register for Summer Session: * Registration begins in one week, on March 18, 2013. You will be assigned one day during the first week in which you can register. The Registration Schedule<http://www.umanitoba.ca/extended/summer/calendar/registration/reg_sched.sht…> indicates registration dates and times. Find your registration time on Aurora Student. Log in and select Enrolment & Academic Records. Select Registration and then Registration Time & Status. While on this page you should be sure to check if: o You have any Holds that will prevent registration (including Advisor Holds for students in specific programs); o Your academic status prevents registration (e.g. academic suspension); o Your record is not currently active due to an absence from university. * For the first 5 days of registration (March 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22), spaces in most courses are released each day in equal numbers to ensure fair access for all students. For example, if a course has 50 spaces available, 10 spaces will be released each day. During these first 5 days of registration, the only day you may register is determined by the last two digits of your Student Number. You may register between 9:00 am and 11:59 p.m. on your day of registration. * If you are planning to Repeat a course(s) you have previously completed, you must obtain permission from your faculty (University 1) advising office prior to registration. Your advisor can also check to ensure that a course Repeat is to your benefit depending on your academic goals. Do this in advance of your registration day to ensure that your registration is not delayed and you don't miss out on space. * If you are expecting to graduate in Spring 2013, you must re-apply for admission if you plan to continue taking courses in Summer Session. * Remember that you are financially and academically responsible for all courses in which you are registered after the Revision deadline. This Revision period is very short in Summer Session, so make sure you drop a course you will not be taking before it begins - or at the latest before the applicable Revision deadline. Failure to pay for your courses will not result in a de-registration of courses. Students who fail to pay for courses will be placed on Hold<http://umanitoba.ca/student/records/registration/steps/652.htm> and will be unable to register for the following term until the Hold is cleared. Failure to withdraw through normal procedures will result in a grade being assigned to all courses in which you are registered in at the end of term and you will be liable for all associated fees. Remember - Make sure you contact a student advisor: * If you are unsure of your course selection and program requirements * If you are planning to repeat a course or take an equivalent course * If your program requires Advisor approval - check your Hold status in Aurora Student. Machray Hall Incident Update

An individual was arrested by the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) today in Armes Building for having uttered threats in a Machray Hall office area. The arrest took place without incident and WPS has made it clear that at no time was the university community in danger. The accused was released on conditions that she not attend any University of Manitoba properties. The university is unable to provide further information as this is now a WPS matter. Telephone System Outage for Monday, January 14

This maintenance will impact all telephone services on both campuses. The phone services that will be impacted are: No 911 service from a university phone No 555 service No local calls No long distance calls No voicemail service No internal calls on campus Code Blue stations will not work Elevator emergency phones will not work Panic alarms may experience periodic outages In the case of an emergency please call 911 from a CELLULAR phone. "My Library Account" Outage

University of Manitoba Telephone Outage Notice

Information Services & Technology would like to inform users of a planned telephone outage from 6:00 A.M. to 8:00 A.M. on Saturday, December 8. This maintenance will impact all telephone services on both campuses. The phone services that will be impacted are: No 911 service from a university phone No 555 service No local calls No long distance calls No voicemail service No internal calls on campus Code Blue stations will not work Elevator emergency phones will not work Panic alarms may experience periodic outages In the case of an emergency please call 911 from a CELLULAR phone. For non-emergency assistance please call University of Manitoba Security at 269-3363 from a CELLULAR phone Thank you for your patience during this required maintenance.
