University of Manitoba Security Services is urging caution following a reported incident of a purse snatching in the early evening March 13, 2010 in the vicinity of Chancellor Matheson Road. Students, faculty, and staff are urged to be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious person(s) immediately. Security Services continues to work in conjunction with Winnipeg Police Service and reminds our community that the Department is available 24/7, providing safewalks, patrols, and immediate response to emergencies, Code Blue Poles and emergency phones throughout campus. Reminder: Voluntary Withdrawal Deadline for Fall/Winter and Winter Term Courses is Friday, March 19, 2010 The deadline for Voluntary Withdrawal from Fall/Winter and Winter Term courses taught during the standard term is this Friday, March 19. VW's must be done through Aurora Student. Courses taught outside the standard term will have different VW deadlines. Note - if you are On Hold for outstanding tuition, library books, parking fines, etc. you will not be able to access the Registration function in Aurora to VW a course. If you are On Hold and plan to VW, you must either first clear your Hold so that you can access the Registration functions in Aurora, or you must contact your Faculty (University 1) advising office for assistance in dropping the course. Are you planning to take courses in Summer Session? Join the thousands of students who take advantage of Summer Session to lighten their load in fall & winter, finish their degree faster, enjoy smaller classes, or catch up on missed or failed courses. Here are some things to know if you are planning to register for Summer Session . Registration begins March 22, 2010. You will be assigned one day during the first week in which you can register. The <http://www.umanitoba.ca/extended/summer/calendar/registration/reg_sched.sht ml> Registration Schedule indicates registration dates and times. Find your registration time on Aurora Student. Log in and select Enrolment & Academic Records. Select Registration and then Registration Time & Status. While on this page you should also check to see if: o You have any Holds that will prevent registration (including Advisor Holds for students in specific programs); o Your academic status prevents registration (e.g. academic suspension); o Your record is not currently active due to an absence from university. . For the first 5 days of registration (March 22, 23, 24, 25, and 26), spaces in most courses are released each day in equal numbers to ensure fair access for all students. For example, if a course has 50 spaces available, 10 spaces will be released each day. During these first 5 days of registration, the only day you may register is determined by the last two digits of your Student Number (see below). You may register between 9:00 am and 12:00 midnight on your day of registration. . If you are planning to Repeat a course(s) you have previously completed, you must obtain permission from your faculty (University 1) advising office prior to registration. Your advisor can also check to ensure that a course Repeat is to your benefit depending on your academic goals. Do this in advance of your registration day to ensure that your registration is not delayed and you don't miss out on space. . If you are expecting to graduate in Spring 2010, you must re-apply for admission if you plan to continue taking courses in Summer Session. . Remember that you are financially and academically responsible for all courses in which you are registered after the Revision deadline. This Revision period is very short in Summer Session, so make sure you drop a course you will not be taking before it begins - or at the latest before the applicable Revision deadline. Failure to pay for your courses will not result in a de-registration of courses. Students who fail to pay for courses will be placed on <http://umanitoba.ca/student/records/registration/steps/652.htm> Hold and will be unable to register for the following term until the Hold is cleared. Failure to withdraw through normal procedures will result in a grade being assigned to all courses in which you are registered in at the end of term and you will be liable for all associated fees. Saunderson and Stanton Excellence in Teaching Award Deadline: March 15, 2010 for Spring Convocation Ceremonies Do you know an outstanding professor or instructor who deserves recognition for their teaching skills? If so, you may be interested in nominating someone you consider to be an exceptional faculty member for the Saunderson & Stanton Excellence in Teaching Award. Nominations are accepted all year for these annual awards provided by the Dr. and Mrs. H.H. Saunderson Award fund and from the bequest of Mrs. Olive Beatrice Stanton. Each award is valued at $2,000, two from the Saunderson Fund and one or two from the Stanton Fund. This is the 42nd year that nominations have been invited for the Stanton Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the 39th year for the Dr. and Mrs. H.H. Saunderson Award for Excellence in Teaching. Instructors may be nominated in any year but those who have received either the Saunderson or the Stanton awards in the previous 10 years are not eligible for selection. Fall Term 2009 Revision Deadline Reminders

September 21, 2009 Registration Reminders for 2009-2010 . The last day to add Fall Term and Fall/Winter courses taught during the regular term schedule is Wednesday, September 23. Most students will register for courses through Aurora Student, but remember that if you are repeating a course you must seek approval from an advisor in your academic unit before registering. . The 50% refund of tuition fees on one term courses has been eliminated. Refer to the Refunds <http://umanitoba.ca/student/records/fees/829.htm> web page for details. The deadline to drop a Fall Term course with a full refund of tuition fees is Wednesday, September 23. You may drop Fall Term courses after this date, but you will receive no refund and the drop will appear on your record as a VW (Voluntary Withdrawal). The deadline to VW from Fall Term courses is Wednesday, November 18, 2009. Note that courses taught outside the standard term schedule will have different refund and withdrawal deadlines. Refer to the course outline or teaching unit for further information. . The UM will not cancel/de-register students from current term courses due to non-payment of fees. You are financially and academically responsible for all courses in which you are registered after the Revision deadline - September 23, 2009. Failure to pay for your courses will not result in a de-registration of courses in the current term. Late this past Friday afternoon Winnipeg Police Service announced the arrest of two high school students on charges of conspiracy to commit murder. According to police, the two 17-year-olds had planned to target a number of public institutions, including two high schools, a local church and the University of Manitoba. Police have informed the University that the male and female teens were the sole individuals involved in the alleged plan, and that there was and is no risk to the University of Manitoba community as both individuals remain in custody. Winnipeg Police Service continues to work on the case and liaise directly with the University. The University of Manitoba takes this opportunity to remind our community that there are emergency notification procedures in place, including annunciator phones in classrooms, an emergency web site and text/phone messaging to students and staff. If you receive an emergency message via any of these means, please follow the instructions provided. Student Parking Update

For those who have not yet paid for their 2008-09 student parking permit, the payment deadline has been extended to FRIDAY, AUGUST 1. If payment is not received by the deadline your parking reservation will be cancelled. In-person payments by cash, cheque or money order are accepted at the Parking Office (125 University Centre). Office hours are weekdays from 8:00am to 4:30pm. If you would like to mail a cheque or money order, please make payable to THE UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA and send to: Parking and Shuttle Services, 125 University Centre, The University of Manitoba, Winnipeg MB R3T 2N2. Write your name, Student Number and vehicle license plate number on the back. Be sure to indicate it is your parking permit fee. Payment must be received by the Friday August 1 deadline. Please note we are unable to process payments by credit card, debit card, or post-dated cheque. In the General Studies section of the Extended Education chapter, Section 4.1: Academic Assessment Policy indicated that academic regulations were under review. Please note the new regulations have been approved by Senate as described below. The revised regulations are also included in the web Calendar. 4.1 Academic Assessment Policy Academic assessment gauges student success at the University. Formal academic assessment shall be done following each academic term for all General Studies students who have completed 30 credit hours or more of attempts. In order to be in "good standing" in General Studies, a student much achieve a Degree Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.00 or greater at each assessment period. Students in "good standing" may continue in General Studies or, preferably, transfer to a target faculty. Students who do not achieve a Degree GPA of 2.00 will be placed "on probation", which will appear on the student's transcript. Once "on probation", a student will be allowed to register for another term (or terms). At each point of assessment, students "on probation" must achieve a Term GPA of 2.00 in order to proceed. In order to clear probation, a student must achieve a Degree GPA of 2.00. While "on probation", students are encouraged to consult regularly with the General Studies student advisor and always prior to registration. If a student does not succeed in achieving a Term GPA of 2.00, they will be placed on "academic suspension" for one calendar year. A student on "academic suspension" is normally not allowed to register in another faculty or school at the University of Manitoba or to attend any other post-secondary institution during the time of suspension. China Earthquake Relief

This message is being sent on behalf of the Office of the President. Dear Colleagues: I am writing in the aftermath of the recent earthquake in China, to ask for your assistance, and to advise you of the initiatives the broader Chinese community of Winnipeg is undertaking to help the survivors of this tragedy. As many of you are aware, an earthquake of magnitude 8.0 - first reported as 7.8 - hit the province of Sichuan, China, on Monday, May 12. As of May 19, the death toll had reached 34,000 and more than 250,000 were injured. These numbers are expected to rise rapidly in the days to come. Beichuan, a small town at the epicenter of the earthquake, was flattened in seconds. Thousands of students lost their lives in school on that Monday afternoon. The devastation and deaths are of such magnitude that the Government of China has declared three days of national mourning, the first ever in the Chinese history. We have all read stories of natural disasters and sometimes it is hard to comprehend destruction and devastation that is located far away. For many of our students, faculty and staff, however, this tragedy is all too real. Sichuan Province is home to many international students at the University of Manitoba, and several of our professors have their hometowns within 200 km of the epicenter. Furthermore Sichuan University is a sister university of the University of Manitoba, and Winnipeg is a sister city of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province. Dr. Feiyue Wang, a member of our Department of Environment and Geography as well as the Department of Chemistry, and Chair of the Manitoba Chinese Tribune, has advised me that the Chinese and Chinese-Canadian communities of Winnipeg are co-coordinating efforts to provide care and support to the victims of this earthquake. A major benefit performance is planned for May 25 at the Canad Inns - Polo Park. I am attaching the poster describing this event for your information. Your attendance would be most appreciated. If you would like to make a donation, please make your cheque payable to the Canadian Red Cross, earmarked "China Earthquake". You may drop the cheque at the event venue, or at the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre, or mail it directly to the Canadian Red Cross National Office, 170 Metcalfe, Suite 300, Ottawa, ON K2P, 2P2. Reminder: The Voluntary Withdrawal Deadline for Winter Term 2008 and Fall/Winter 2007/2008 (spanned) courses is Thursday, March 20. You can withdraw from classes through Aurora Student. Students who are on Hold due to outstanding tuition, library books, parking fines, etc. must obtain assistance from a student advisor in their academic unit or the Registrar's Office. Summer Session registration commences the week of March 24 to March 28. Students will be assigned one day during this week in which to register. Each day during this first week of registration an equal number of spaces are released to the registration system. There is no advantage to students who are assigned a registration day that is earlier in the week. Beginning Monday, March 31 all students may register. Check for your registration time on Aurora Student > Enrolment & Academic Records > Registration > Registration Time and Status. Please note: . Register at your earliest opportunity. Space is limited and courses that are in high demand will fill during the first week of registration or shortly after. . Some faculties have courses with irregular withdrawal dates; see your faculty general office for information. Note: The deadline to VW courses that span Fall/Winter 2007/2008 is March 20, 2008. Students on HOLD will be unable to use the registration functions in Aurora to drop a class. If you are on HOLD and unable to withdraw through Aurora, please contact your faculty office by 4:00 PM on Wednesday November 14th for assistance. Your faculty office will withdraw you from the class on request. UPGRADE TO AURORA SYSTEM There will be a scheduled upgrade to Aurora services during the period November 16 to 20. The online application for undergraduate admission service will be unavailable for the period of 12:01 AM November 16 until 8:30 AM November 20. During this time, students may still download paper applications at www.umanitoba.ca/applynow. All other Aurora self-services, including student registration, will be unavailable from noon on November 16 until 8:30 AM on November 20. Staff INB services will also be unavailable during this time. All university offices will remain open for business during this time, but transactions may be delayed until full Aurora services resume on November 20. Strike action by CAW staff began today Wednesday, October 10. The CAW includes 480 physical plant staff (caretakers, maintenance, trades, etc.), food service and residence personnel. The University will continue to operate as normal to the extent possible. Classes will continue as scheduled. The libraries will remain open. Students have the right to choose whether or not to cross the picket line. The University will make efforts to reasonably accommodate the student to ensure that the student is not discriminated against as a result of their decision. However, students are responsible for materials covered in class. These students should contact their instructors to discuss reasonable accommodation. All parties, including employees on strike and individuals crossing picket lines, are responsible for refraining from illegal behaviour. Please exercise patience and caution in crossing picket lines. Picket line activity will be video taped and recorded for safety and security purposes and will be made available to Winnipeg Police Service, if necessary. If difficulties are experienced crossing the picket line please contact Security Services at 474-9312. Rogers and MTS Mobility cellular customers can also reach Security Services by dialing #555. Food Services will be reduced, however some locations will remain open as identified below. Students are encouraged to bring their own lunch during the strike. Winnipeg Transit will operate and have indicated that they will cross the picket line. However, staff and students are encouraged to allow extra time to get to work and classes. The shuttle bus will also operate but may experience some delays. Special arrangements have been made to continue on campus (Fort Garry) transportation for students with disabilities. TO ALL STUDENTS AND STAFF The University and CAW have been bargaining since September 24th in an effort to reach a new Collective Agreement. On October 3, 2007 the University applied for conciliation when negotiations reached an impasse. The CAW membership voted in favour of establishing a strike deadline of midnight Tuesday, October 9, 2007. Should negotiations be unsuccessful in reaching a collective agreement by that date, strike action by CAW staff could take place as early as Wednesday, October 10. The CAW represents approximately 480 University employees in the maintenance trades, powerhouse, general services (truck deliveries, snow clearing, garbage pick up, etc.), grounds, caretaking, residences and food services. In the event of a strike, the University will continue normal operations to the extent possible. Although a CAW labour action may have some impact on aspects of University operations, it is not expected to have a direct impact on the delivery of academic programs. In the event of a strike the following standard employment procedures apply: 1. During a strike all employees have a legal right to work: * All employees have a legal right to cross a picket line and come to work. * Those employees on strike may choose to come to work or not come to work. * Those employees not on strike, including those employees covered by collective agreements other than CAW agreement and excluded employees, have a legal right to work as well as an obligation to come to work. 2. Employees who do not come to work will not be paid and may be subject to discipline. 3. Any picket line incidents or problems should be reported immediately to the University Security Services (474-9312). Rogers and MTS Mobility cellular customers can also reach Security by dialing #555. In the event of a strike, students should be aware of the following: 1. Classes, lectures and labs will continue as scheduled unless otherwise announced. 2. Libraries will remain open. 3. Winnipeg Transit and the University shuttle bus will continue to operate. 4. This message is sent on behalf of the President's Office to all students at the University of Manitoba As you may have heard reported in the media, at the University of Winnipeg today a situation emerged involving a suspicious message written on a washroom wall. Winnipeg Police Service is investigating this incident. According to the Winnipeg Police Service, the situation is isolated to the University of Winnipeg. Although no connection has been made to the University of Manitoba, the University reminds its faculty, staff, and students to remain aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious persons and/or criminal offences occurring on University of Manitoba property to Security Services at 474-9312. Patrol Officers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and offer a variety of community services including Safewalk, Non Violent Crisis Intervention Training, Rape Aggression Defence (R.A.D.), and presentations regarding office and personal safety. If you have not already done so, check for your registration time through Aurora Student. . Select Enrolment & Academic Records>Registration> select the Term Fall 2007 or Winter 2008, then Registration Time & Status. Your registration time will be displayed on this page. You should have the same registration time for both Fall 2007 and Winter 2008. . Please check the Curriculum Information lower down the page. If this program is not the program you intend to register in, please contact your intended faculty. Your registration time may need to be adjusted. . If you have a Hold or Academic Status (such as Suspension) that prevents registration, this will also be noted. If you have been away for awhile and your account has been inactivated as a result, this will also be noted. . Laboratory Fees The University of Manitoba has introduced a lab fee for all course sections that include a laboratory component. Three types of lab sections have been identified: . Wet/Bench Labs will be assessed a fee of $30.00 per term for sections that are 3 to 5 credit hours. . Dry Labs /Tutorials and Language Labs will be assessed a fee of $25.00 per term for sections that are 3 to 5 credit hours. Lab Fees are in the process of being set up on applicable course sections. If the fee is in place at the time of registration you will be assessed immediately. Please check your fee statement prior to the fee payment deadline for any Lab Fees that may have been assessed after you had registered. Note that Lab Fees are refundable only up to the Revision Deadline for the applicable term. You may view the Lab Fees attached to a specific course section in the Class Schedule - Detailed Class Information. If a Lab Fee has been applied it will appear under the heading: Base Fees (other charges may apply) UMSU Health Dental Plan changes The University of Manitoba Students Union (UMSU) Health & Dental Plan is a group benefit approved by students in a referendum in 2002. Since that time, the university has supported the administration of the plan and continues to do so. All students taking 6 credit hours or more for the Fall Term (excluding Distance Education and Off Campus courses) are automatically enrolled in the plan. The plan fee is $226.55 per year (for 12 months of coverage), though students may add their family (spouse and dependants) for an additional fee of $343.85. Students who have suitable alternate coverage may apply to UMSU to opt out of the plan. Details of the plan and opt-out deadlines are available online, at the UMSU Health and Dental Office in 110 University Centre or by calling 204.474.6666. In an effort to provide information to the insurance provider that is both timely and accurate and to ensure that students have suitable coverage when needed, administration of the opt out process has been changed, effective Fall 2007. The plan premium must be paid to the university, regardless of whether or not you are planning to opt out. If your opt-out application is approved, you will be issued a refund of the Health and Dental Insurance fee directly from UMSU. Go to UMSU.ca for more information on UMSU Health and Dental Insurance and to access the opt-out application form (available in August). Note: Band sponsored students will initially be assessed the UMSU Health & Dental Fee. The fee will be removed from your student account before invoices are sent to Band sponsors. Credit Hours needed per term to be considered Full Time Undergraduates Full Time Status is determined on a per term basis. To be considered full time, most undergraduate students must be enroled in at least 60% of a full course load for the program in which they are registered. For example, in a program in which the normal full load for a Fall/Winter Session is 30 credit hours, full time status is based on 60% of a full term load of 15 credit hours. In this example a student would need to be registered in a minimum of 9 credit hours in a term to be considered full time for that term. As the course load varies between years within a program, faculties have determined a minimum number of credit hours required for each term applicable to all years for specific programs. If you are uncertain of the number of credit hours required to be full time in a term in your program, please consult a Student Advisor in your faculty. Graduate Students Note that, with the exception of students in programs in which fees are assessed on a per credit hour basis (MBA, MPA, Social Work by Dist Ed, Occasional, Pre-Masters), graduate level students are considered full time, unless approved by the department and the Faculty of Graduate Studies for part time study. Students in the programs noted above will be assessed as full time or part time by the rules used for undergraduate students described above (i.e based on registered credit hours.)
