Beyond Bastardy: Sexual Transgressions and Historical Justifications for Legitimizing the Illegitimate
We seek abstracts for conference panels/workshops that focus on questions of legitimacy/illegitimacy in the Iberian and Mediterranean Worlds, circa 1300-1800, to be presented at the Association for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies (ASPHS) annual conference, Exeter College, Oxford, UK, 22-25 June 2027. Participants at these conference sessions/workshops will be invited to contribute to a collected volume of essays that deal with the historical, legal, religious, literary, philosophical, and cultural frameworks that determined legitimacy on newborns and the ways in which illegitimacy was mitigated over the course of the late medieval and early modern periods. Among the topics that the volume will cover are sex and marriage, maternity and paternity, children and inheritance, and gender and race.
Please submit an abstract of 100-150 words and a one-page CV to Prof. Darlene Abreu-Ferreira, University of Winnipeg, d.abreu(a)uwinnipeg.ca, and to Prof. Enrique Fernandez, University of Manitoba, Enrique.Fernandez(a)umanitoba.ca. The deadline for the abstracts and one-page CV is December 15, 2026.
