Potential Security Risk, Heartbleed Bug

Information Services & Technology would like to inform you that earlier this week a serious bug in a common internet tool "OpenSSL" was discovered. This weakness dubbed The Heartbleed Bug, affects a large number of websites and systems on the Internet that use the secure/encrypted SSL protocol for communication (ie. pages that start with https). This tool is most often used when conducting e-commerce or exchanging private or personal information and is used at the University of Manitoba and across the globe. We are pleased to report that no major enterprise wide systems were affected by this vulnerability and that IST has patched, updated or otherwise minimized the risk on the few systems that were found vulnerable. However, we must caution everyone that sites you visit off campus may not be secure. System administrators around the globe are working to fix this issue. We urge you to use caution when using e-commerce sites unless the site has an official statement that they have fixed the issue, and then follow their guidelines. This may include changing the password that you use on those services. Please be extra cautious with unsolicited emails related to your personal or business accounts. Now is the perfect opportunity for an attacker to steal passwords or personal information through malicious web links or attachments. Always visit the account site directly and do not follow links in email that you cannot verify are legitimate. April 2014 Exams - Important Information

To all U of M students: This message includes important information for students writing exams during the April 2014 Exam Period. When is my exam? The Schedule of Final Exams for the April 2014 Exam series, including room and seat assignments, is now available online*. To find out when and where your exams have been scheduled, visit: Final Examinations<http://umanitoba.ca/student/records/finals/index.html>. Students may also use the new My Exams link in Aurora** to view their personal schedule of Fort Garry Campus exams. *Bannatyne campus students may visit their College office for exam schedules. **Aurora will be unavailable from 4:30pm Friday April 11th until Saturday April 12th. Please note: 1. Students are encouraged to review the exam schedule for: * Conflicts: If a conflict exists within the Schedule of Final Exams, you must notify the Registrar's Office immediately - this includes exams scheduled three-in-a-row (i.e. Monday evening, Tuesday morning and afternoon). * Changes: Check the schedule again before your exam dates for any changes. 2. Remember that students must remain available until all exam and test obligations are complete. Travel plans are not an acceptable reason for missing an exam. 3. Photo identification must be brought to the exam. Bring your Student Photo ID Card (preferred) or another piece of photo identification. 4. Exams and accompanying papers must be submitted prior to leaving the exam room. 5. Students who fall ill or otherwise become unable to complete their exam must report to the invigilator before leaving the exam room. 6. Changes were made to U of M Examination Regulations in Fall 2013. Some of these changes include: * Deferred Exams: o New 48-hour limit for deferred exam requests - requests must be received by the faculty/school office within 48-hours from the scheduled exam date. o Requests for a deferral after having attended an exam are granted only for specific situations in which a student is unexpectedly unable to complete their exam; students must speak to the exam invigilator prior to leaving the exam. * Exam conflict arrangements: o Arrangements made for exam conflicts due to specific athletic, academic or religious obligations are made in the students' faculty/school office, as per the Deferred Exam Procedure. These should be requested as soon as the conflict becomes known. * Personal belongings: o Unauthorized materials are not permitted in the exam room; students should bring with them only those items required for the exam that they are writing, and materials or devices permitted by their instructor. o All items brought with a student which are not required for the exam must be kept under their exam table - this includes coats and jackets, which are not to be placed on the back of chairs. o Students may not access the space beneath the exam table where their belongings are stored at any time during the exam. * For complete information on policy changes, visit: New Final Exams & Final Grades Policy<http://umanitoba.ca/student/records/examinationspolicy.html>. WRHA Red Measles Advisory (Fort Garry Campus)

This message is sent to all students on behalf of the University of Manitoba, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and Manitoba Health. The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) and Manitoba Health have contacted the University of Manitoba with information concerning possible exposure to red measles on Thursday, March 20, 2014, at specific times and locations on the Fort Garry Campus. Please see the attached bulletin for information provided directly by the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. Below is the update from Manitoba Health. PUBLIC HEALTH UPDATE: SECOND CASE OF MEASLES REPORTED IN MANITOBA Public health officials confirmed today that a second laboratory-confirmed case of measles has been reported in Manitoba. This update is sent as a precautionary warning for those who may have been in contact with the person who is currently ill. In addition, a letter providing information on the current situation and preventive measures will be distributed through schools and daycare centres today. The case is a man in his '20s who lives in the area of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. This individual was in direct contact with the first case of measles identified in Manitoba earlier this month. Symptoms of measles generally appear seven to 21 days after exposure. Initial symptoms may include fever, runny nose, drowsiness, irritability and red eyes. Small white spots may also develop on the inside of the mouth or throat. Several days after the initial symptoms, a red blotchy rash appears on the face and progresses down the body. Measles can lead to complications including ear infections, diarrhea, pneumonia (lung infection) and encephalitis (brain inflammation). Measles is spread through droplets in the air formed when coughing or sneezing. An infected person can spread the virus from four days before the rash appears to four days after. The disease tends to be more severe in infants and young children, and can be life-threatening. Provincial public health officials are working with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority to investigate the case and identify contacts. People who were at the following locations and events should be aware of the possibility of infection: University of Manitoba, March 20, at the following locations and times: - St. Paul's College, Room 215 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; - Machray Hall, Room 418 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.; - EITC-E2, Room 105 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.; - Frank Kennedy study hall, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. and from 5:15 p.m. to 8 p.m.; and Concordia Hospital emergency department, March 22 between 10:15 p.m. and 10:40 p.m. Those who visited these locations and who think they might have measles or have been in close contact with someone who has been diagnosed with measles should phone their health-care provider or Health Links-Info Santé at 788-8200 or 1-888-315-9257 (toll-free) for more information. Where appropriate, people will be offered immunization and may be asked to remain at home and minimize contact with others to reduce the possible spread of measles. Public health officials will continue to monitor the situation in Manitoba and will provide updated information as necessary. If visiting a physician or health-care provider, it is best to call ahead and make an appointment so health-care staff can take steps to reduce the exposure of other people to the virus. Immunization is the best means of protecting yourself and your family. Contact an immunization provider such as a physician, nurse practitioner or local public health office to make sure you and your family are up to date. In Manitoba, a measles immunization program was first established in 1967. In 1996, the current two-dose measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccine program was introduced. Vaccines are provided for children who are at least one year of age and a second dose is given when aged four to six. The effectiveness of a single dose of measles vaccine given at 12 or 15 months of age is estimated to be 85 to 95 per cent. With a second dose, efficacy is almost 100 per cent. Adults born before 1970 are generally presumed to have acquired natural immunity to measles, however, some of these individuals may be susceptible. Adults born in 1970 or later who do not have a record showing they received a measles vaccine, or who have a history of laboratory confirmed measles infection, should be immunized with one dose of MMR. In Canada, measles activity is currently being reported by British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario, mostly related to ongoing outbreaks in the Philippines and the Netherlands. To reduce the spread of measles, people can: - ensure immunizations are up to date, - wash their hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available, - avoid sharing drinking glasses or eating utensils, - cover coughs and sneezes with the forearm or a tissue, and - stay home when sick. DAFOE ROAD CLOSURE - Active Living Centre - March 29th & 30th, 2014

Vehicular and pedestrian traffic on Dafoe Road from University Crescent east to Service Road #39 will be closed to thru traffic starting Saturday March 29, 2014 @ 06:00 am and will reopen on Sunday March 30 @ 18:00. During the closure local traffic will be permitted via Freedman Crescent and Maclean Crescent. This closure is required for the dismantling and removal of the tower crane currently used at the new Active Living Centre. In preparation for the above road closure and in conjunction with other work relating to the Active Living Centre, the north sidewalk only along Dafoe Rd. from University Crescent up to but not including the School of Music Building will be closed to pedestrian traffic starting Wednesday March 26, 2014 until further notice.
