To Students, Faculty, Staff and Alumni: Earlier today in Halifax, the University of Manitoba added its voice to the apologies that have been expressed to Indian Residential School survivors at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. We join other national institutions which have previously expressed their deep regret for these schools and their damaging impact on First Nations, Métis and Inuit people, communities and cultures. We see this as one important step in the process of reconciliation. We are committed to advance Indigenous education and success in Canada with partners from the broader community. With our statement of apology and reconciliation, I believe we are well on our way to achieving that goal. The University of Manitoba statement of apology and reconciliation demonstrates our commitment to Indigenous students, faculty and staff. Our university remains committed to a welcoming environment where Indigenous cultures and values are included and reflected in our teaching, discovery and engagement. We trust our apology will be accepted in the spirit of generosity and reconciliation that has been the hallmark of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission process. Dear Student, >From November 17-20, 2011 the University of Calgary will be hosting the 5th Annual Canadian Conference on Student Leadership. The University of Manitoba Student Union and Student Life are teaming up to send an eight student delegation to represent the University of Manitoba. If you are available that weekend and interested in being one of the eight representatives, please submit: 1. A cover letter introducing yourself and why you believe you should be selected to be a delegate at this CCSL conference. 2. A resume that outlines your relevant student leadership experience, volunteer experience, and qualities you possess in academic and co-curricular areas. The anticipated cost for travel, accommodation, food and registration is $750. In exchange for you agreeing to attend a pre-conference meeting, attend the conference in its entirety, complete a report on the conference and facilitate some kind of 'information sharing' you learned at the conference with the University community, UMSU and Student Life will share your cost so that you only have to pay $250! Interested students that are in good academic standing can submit their application in person to UMSU (101 University Centre, Fort Garry Campus or Answers at the Bannatyne Campus) or Student Life (225 University Centre, Fort Garry Campus) or Services for Students at Bannatyne Campus (245 T wing Basic Science Bldg, Bannatyne Campus). Please enclose your submission in a sealed envelope with "I'm an Emerging Leader" on the cover. The University of Manitoba Sustainability Strategy and You On behalf of the University of Manitoba Sustainability Committee, we are very pleased to release a draft Sustainability Strategy for your consideration and comment. The release of this document marks a significant milestone in the university's efforts to improve sustainability and operate in a way that respects and supports our environment. In an effort to become a leader in this regard, the University of Manitoba Sustainability Committee has developed a comprehensive strategy that sets out a number of goals and actions with respect to campus operations, planning and community engagement. Ideas and feedback received from the university community formed the foundation of this draft Sustainability Strategy and we greatly appreciate your continued support in this process. The Sustainability Committee and its working groups listened to your ideas and suggestions and integrated them into a draft strategy that reflects your priorities. The result is a plan of action that fosters a culture of sustainability at our institution and integrates sustainability planning and action into all of our functions. The draft strategy is the beginning of our institution's transformation into a more sustainable place in which to learn, work and play. We strongly encourage you to participate in the many upcoming consultation opportunities that the committee is coordinating as we finalize this draft. Participation in the final consultation phase is critical to developing a Sustainability Strategy that is relevant and meaningful. REMINDER: September 21 Fall Term Registration Revision Deadline

Dear UM students, The Registration Revision deadline for Fall 2011 is Wednesday, September 21. Courses that are offered in Fall 2011 and courses that span Fall 2011/Winter 2012 may not be added after this date. If you have registered for Fall 2011 courses or spanned courses in Fall 2011/Winter 2012 and you have decided not to attend, you must drop these courses by Wednesday September 21. You will be subject to all associated fees for courses in which you are registered after this date. Although you may Voluntary Withdraw from Fall Term courses until November 16 and spanned courses until March 16, you will not receive a refund of Fall Term fees if you drop the course(s) after September 21. Courses are dropped using Aurora Student. If you are currently on Hold, please contact your faculty for assistance in dropping a course(s). Fee Payment Fee accounts with outstanding balances after the September 7 fee payment deadline have been assessed late fees. A further $40 late fee will be applied to accounts outstanding after September 21. Students with outstanding fee balances will be placed on Hold and may be subject to de-registration from courses that begin in Winter Term. You will not be cancelled or de-registered from Fall Term courses and will be responsible for tuition and all associated fees. UMSU Health & Dental Plan Deadline to Opt-Out: Wednesday, September 21, 2011 Steps. . Check your Aurora student fee account to ensure you were assessed the health and dental fees. . Fill out the online opt-out form. In order to opt-out you must have a plan/policy number for alternate extended coverage. (not Provincial Health or the Manitoba International Student Health insurance Plan) . Print and hold on to the confirmation email you will receive from the auto generator when you complete your opt-out. You may be asked to provide this confirmation as proof at a later date. . With a successful opt-out , you do not have to include payment for UMSU Health & Dental in your fee payment. If you have opted out of the plan the UMSU Health & Dental fee will be reversed off your tuition after the opt-out deadline and by the end of September.
