The University of Manitoba Sustainability Strategy and You! The University of Manitoba is committed to improving sustainability and operating in a way which respects and supports our environment. In an effort to become a leader in this regard and in keeping with the newly adopted Sustainability Policy, we are undertaking to develop a comprehensive Sustainability Strategy and we need your help to ensure this effort is a success. Since June, the University of Manitoba Sustainability Committee has been working on an action plan to develop the comprehensive Sustainability Strategy for the University that will set goals and actions with respect to campus operations, planning and community engagement. The action plan includes soliciting ideas and feedback from the University community. Over the next few months, the Committee will be reaching out to the community for assistance in the development of the strategy. There will be various opportunities for participation such as working groups, focus groups and surveys. We hope you will join us in one of these many opportunities. Your contribution to this process is critical and it will help to formulate a strategy that is relevant and meaningful to you and to the University of Manitoba community. Then it's time to take charge of your finances! Your government student loan(s) may come from the federal government and or your provincial/territorial government. This means you could have more than one loan to pay back. The National Student Loan Service Centre (NSLSC) will send your Consolidation Agreement by mail before you are required to start making payments. The Agreement sets the terms for the repayment of your Canada Student Loan; this is the federal portion of your loan. You'll have to make a number of decisions, including the type of interest rate and how long you'll take to repay your loan. Depending on your situation, you might also receive another Consolidation Agreement by mail for your provincial or territorial student loan. You don't have to make any payments on your student loan(s) for the first six months after you leave school; however, interest will be added to your Canada Student Loan during these six months. Problems with Aurora PINs

As indicated previously, all users of Aurora Self Service are required to set up new Security Questions and Answers on your next log in to Aurora. The PIN used prior to the upgrade is the same one as you used prior to the upgrade and if entered correctly will work. Several staff and students have reported problems with their Aurora PIN not working. Based on information from these users it is evident that some of the PINs being entered are more than six digits. What we have learned is that, although prior to the upgrade the PIN limitation was six digits, some users believed they had created PINs with more than six digits. If a user typed in more than six digits prior to the upgrade, the system only used the first six entered. So, a user may have thought they were entering an eight digit PIN, for example, when in fact the Aurora system only stored and used the first six digits. The post-upgrade PIN limit is now a combination of 10 digits and characters. So now if a user types in an eight digit PIN there will be a PIN mismatch as the PIN stored in the system was only six digits. If you thought your PIN was greater than six digits prior to the upgrade last weekend, please be sure to type in only the first six digits. After your first log in you can change the PIN to a combination of 6 to 10 digits and characters. If you choose to create a new PIN, please remember the PIN must include a least one number and if you choose to include letters that these are case sensitive. Message from President David T. Barnard: University of Manitoba Rhodes Scholars

It is my great pleasure to announce that two University of Manitoba students have been named Rhodes Scholars for 2011. That two of three Prairie region Rhodes Scholars for 2011 are University of Manitoba students speaks volumes about the quality of students we attract to this institution; the high-calibre of faculty who teach and mentor them in research opportunities; and the abundance of support services in place at this university to help nurture and encourage students to be the best they can be. The Rhodes Scholarships do not focus exclusively on academic achievement. Applicants also are assessed on their dedication and commitment to the betterment of their community and the people who live there. These students consistently demonstrate excellence, not only in the classroom and laboratory, but on our campus and in our cities, towns and neighbourhoods. They are outstanding students and tremendous people. The University of Manitoba has produced a total of 95 Rhodes Scholars since the award was created in 1904. That's more than any other university in Western Canada and is, particularly given our relatively small population, something in which we should all take great pride. This year, we are honoured to celebrate two exemplary students. Melissa Bailey is in the process of completing a B.Sc.(Hons.) in genetics and microbiology. She has taken full advantage of the opportunities placed in her path during her studies at the University of Manitoba. She has conducted research in genetics and stem cell biology and has worked at both the National Microbiology Laboratory and at the Max Planck Institute of Microbiology in Germany. Outside of her academic pursuits, Ms. Bailey is an accomplished athlete in aerial dance. Her commitment to her community is evident in her work as a coordinator of the Let's Talk Science program in public schools and her development of dance programs for disadvantaged youth in Winnipeg. Ms. Bailey intends to use her scholarship to pursue her interest in stem cell research through a M.Sc. in Clinical Medicine. Jody Reimer is completing her B.A. (Hons.) in Mathematics and Religion. In addition to her academic excellence, Ms. Reimer is also active in language studies, hiking, cycling and community outreach. She has taught as an assistant at the university, as well as a volunteer in India with the Ten Thousand Villages program. She has studied in Finland as part of her degree program, and has been a dedicated leader in recreational programming. Ms. Reimer intends to use her scholarship to pursue an M.Sc. in Mathematics through research in the application of mathematics to problems in biology. Both of these exceptional students will now have the opportunity to study at the University of Oxford in England for two or three years, beginning in October, 2011. They take with them all they have learned and experienced here at the University of Manitoba. It makes me very proud to know that this institution, and the people who work here, have helped these two women attain this prestigious distinction. I also wish to congratulate Braden O'Neill, a recent graduate of the University of Alberta, who was the third Prairie region recipient of the Rhodes Scholarship for 2011. While I send my congratulations out to our two new Rhodes Scholars, I also wish to take this opportunity to offer my heart-felt thanks to the dedicated members of the President's Advisory Committee on Rhodes Scholarships who work diligently to identify prospective applicants, help mentor them through the application process and assist in preparing the applicants for the rigorous interview process. Indeed, my thanks go out to the entire university community. Each of you, in your way, help to support and nurture these leaders of tomorrow. Thank you for your commitment to this process. Congratulations again to our most recent Rhodes Scholars. Their accomplishments make me very proud to be a member of this university. David T. Aurora Student is back online - new security features in effect

To all UM students Following a successful system upgrade, Aurora Student Self Service is now available. As part of the upgraded system, you will see enhanced security features. These include enhanced PIN functionality that allows a PIN to be 6 to 10 digits plus characters. Your PIN must contain numbers and may contain letters. Note: your current PIN will continue to work - you are not required to set a new PIN. The other change you will see is that you are now required to set two Security Questions. You must choose questions from the list provided and may not create your own question. You will be required to select your new Security Questions and set your answers on your next log in to Aurora. To verify your identity or if you forget your PIN you may be required to answer one or both of these questions, either online or when talking to the Registrar's Office. * The answer to your security question must be a minimum of 2 characters. * Answers are not case sensitive. * It is recommended that you do not use punctuation in your answers. * Keep the answers simple and memorable. * Avoid using answers that friends and parents can guess. This message is delivered by President David Barnard, University of Manitoba to alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends of the University of Manitoba community. I am taking this opportunity to speak directly about a matter involving a University of Manitoba doctoral student that is garnering a great deal of public attention. I know many of you have been following developments regarding this case in the media and likely have many questions. I first want to state my unequivocal support for the student involved in this matter. It is my understanding that this student is an exceptional student who has achieved outstanding success and is fully deserving of the PhD conferred by the University of Manitoba. Unfortunately, a lot of misinformation about this case has been widely broadcast, most notably in the mass media, and it has all too easily and readily been accepted by some as fact. This rush to rash conclusions and finger-pointing can do serious harm to the reputation of all those involved in the case. It is incumbent upon all of us to wait for the case to work its way through the process before drawing conclusions; to presume innocence, not guilt; to understand that there are at least two sides to a story, and that if we have heard only one, we have nowhere near enough information to condemn our colleagues or fellow alumni. Having received permission from the student involved in this matter to release limited information, the Dean of Graduate Studies and the Dean of Science have prepared a statement. I encourage you also to read their message found at <http://www.umanitoba.ca> www.umanitoba.ca. I also want to take this opportunity to emphasize that the University of Manitoba encourages informed debate on issues related to academic policy, such as those in the case before us. Where it is possible for the university to improve its policies, and where it is possible for the university to improve its transparency with respect to these policies, so that decisions and actions can be clearly accounted for, we will do so. To this end, the administration and Senate have already commenced discussions relating to the accommodation of students with disabilities, including a review of: - how to balance the University's legal obligation to offer reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities while protecting academic standards; - what types of accommodations may be offered, without compromising academic standards; - who should decide on whether accommodations should be offered, and if so, what type; - what types of evidence of disability should the decision maker require; - with whom is the decision-maker expected to consult; - how to ensure timely decisions on accommodation are made, so that a student's academic progress is not compromised; and, - how to protect the privacy of students while assessing a case and implementing accommodations. Discussion of these matters will involve students, faculty, staff and experts in these fields and will take place through the university Senate, our academic governing body, in the spirit of our institutional commitment to continuous improvement. The University of Manitoba will learn from this experience, and it is our intention to do so as a responsible, responsive academic community. I will provide you with an update when it is possible to do so. However, for now, I plan not to comment further and allow the legal processes to unfold. Your comments and perspectives are welcome. Nominations are accepted all year for these annual awards provided by the Dr. and Mrs. H.H. Saunderson Award fund and from the bequest of Mrs. Olive Beatrice Stanton. Each award is valued at $2000, two from the Saunderson Fund and one or two from the Stanton Fund. This is the 44th year that nominations have been invited for the Stanton Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the 41st year for the Dr. and Mrs. H.H. Saunderson Award for Excellence in Teaching. Survey: How can we improve the M and W Requirement?

The University Written English (W) and Mathematics (M) Requirement for Undergraduate Students All students are required to complete, within the first 60 credit hours of their programs, a minimum of one three credit hour course with significant content in written English, and a minimum of one three credit hour course with significant content in mathematics. The link at the bottom of this message will direct you to an important survey that is designed to help improve the quality of undergraduate education at the University of Manitoba. We are two student representatives on a University Senate Subcommittee looking at how the M and W requirements can be improved and your opinion as an undergraduate student is crucial for our results. VW's must be done through Aurora Student. Courses taught outside the standard term will have different VW deadlines. Note - The UMSU Daytimer incorrectly lists the Fall Term VW deadline as Thursday, November 18. Note - if you are On Hold for outstanding tuition, library books, parking fines, etc. you will not be able to access the Registration function in Aurora to VW a course. If you are On Hold and plan to VW, you must either first clear your Hold so that you can access the Registration functions in Aurora, or you must contact your Faculty (University 1) advising office for assistance in dropping the course. University of Manitoba Email Issues

The University of Manitoba is still trying to resolve the problems caused by the repeated Phishing scams. The scams have resulted in the University’s campus network being blocked by several Internet Email Service Providers over the past week. We have been able to resume service with most providers; the most notable exception to this would be Windows Live Hotmail. Any email sent to a hotmail account continues to be rejected from their email server. Several attempts have been made at all levels to have this block removed. At this time Microsoft has not facilitated our requests. University of Manitoba correspondence between staff, faculty and students has been directly impacted as a result. At this time, IST is recommending that all official correspondence must be between University of Manitoba computer accounts. Please note, never give out your password. Emergency Repair Information and Update - Angel Notification

IST continues the efforts to recover the health of our hardware and restore our systems and services. IST had planned to keep the Angel Learning System available but unfortunately this was not possible. Since 6pm IST has been preparing for hardware replacement. At 7:15pm the replacement hardware arrived at the University. We are now under way at implementing the replacement hardware that should hopefully restore our systems and services. Any system or service not operational at this time can’t be recovered until the replacement hardware has been implemented and tested. If the new hardware is successful all systems including the Angel Learning System will be brought back into service and the systems should be fully operational by 6 am on Oct 12th. To implement the new hardware and restore our systems, we will shut down most services starting at 6 PM on Oct 11th. Any system not operational at this time will not be recovered until the new hardware has been implemented. Angel and Novel systems will remain operational for this afternoon. It is our intention if possible to keep the Angel system operational throughout the system work planned for this evening. If the new hardware is successful all systems will be brought back into service and the system should be fully operational by 6 am on Oct 12th. System Hardware Failure had returned.

As of 7 pm Oct 10 our attempts to stabilize our system and return it to health has suffered a set back. It has been reported to the Help & Solutions Centre that the Storage Network device has been shut down to allow for complete diagnostic evaluation and to allow the team to bring the system back in a controlled state. This work will take several hours to complete. Many systems have been impacted by this emergency outage including Angel and the Novel systems. At this time login's to campus computers will fail due to the Novel system outage. We continue to work to restore the systems as quickly as possible. Emergency System Hardware Problem impacting Angel Course Management Learning System

IST has been working to resolve a hardware failure throughout the weekend. Late Saturday, and continuing on the Angel Course Learning management system has been off line. We do not expect at this time that any data has been lost. IST system administrators have been working with our vendor throughout the weekend to restore our service. At this time we have new hardware parts being flown into Winnipeg. It is our expectation that these parts will be installed by noon Sunday Oct 12th. All attempts at this time are directed at restoring Angel service as quickly as possible. We are sorry for any inconvenience that these problems have caused and continue to work as quickly as possible. Purse Snatching at Knife Point at Bannatyne Campus

The following is sent on behalf of Alan Simms, Associate Vice-President (Administration): To: All Staff, Students and Faculty at the University of Manitoba At approximately 11:00 pm last night a University of Manitoba student was walking westbound on McDermot Avenue to her car parked at a meter beside E Lot when a male, riding a bicycle, approached and brandished a knife and demanded her purse. The student complied and the suspect fled south through H Lot then west into the alley between McDermot and Tecumseh. The student was unharmed. The theft is currently under investigation by the Winnipeg Police Service. The suspect was described as Aboriginal male, 30-35 years of age, approximately 6 feet tall, with grey hair, wearing a dark hat, dark hooded sweatshirt, and grey pants. We would like to remind all staff, students and Faculty at both the Bannatyne and Fort Garry campuses to be aware of your surroundings when walking at night. To protect yourself, walk with a friend or co-worker or contact SafeWalk at 474-9312 for an Officer escort at anytime of the day or night.

Dear UM students, The Registration Revision deadline for Fall 2010 is Wednesday, September 22. Courses that are offered in Fall 2010 and courses that span Fall 2010/Winter 2011 may not be added after this date. If you have registered for Fall 2010 courses or spanned courses Fall 2010/Winter 2010 and you have decided not to attend, you must drop these courses by Wednesday September 22. You will be subject to all associated fees for courses in which you are registered after this date. Although you may Voluntary Withdraw from Fall Term courses until November 17 and spanned courses until March 18, you will not receive a refund of Fall Term fees if you drop the course(s) after September 22. Courses are dropped using Aurora Student. If you are currently on Hold contact your faculty for assistance in dropping a course(s). Fee Payment Fee accounts outstanding after the September 8th fee payment deadline have been assessed late fees. A further $40 late fee will be applied to accounts outstanding after September 22nd. Students with outstanding fee balances will be placed on Hold and may be subject to de-registration of courses that begin in Winter Term. UMSU Health & Dental Plan Deadline to Opt-Out: Wednesday, September 22, 2010 Steps. . Check your Aurora student fee account to ensure you were assessed the health and dental fees. . Fill out the online opt-out from. In order to opt-out you must have a plan/policy number for alternate extended coverage. (not Provincial Health or International Student Health insurance) . Dear UM students, The Fall 2010 Fee Payment Deadline is Wednesday, September 8. Refer to the Financial <http://umanitoba.ca/admin/financial_services/revcap/StudentAccounts.htm> Services website for payment options. Late Fees <http://umanitoba.ca/student/records/fees/827.htm> will apply if you are registered for Fall 2010 term and do not pay the balance in full by the deadline, or if your initial registration and payment is after September 8. Reminder: You are responsible for tuition and general fees for all courses in which you are registered. Note: The University of Manitoba will not cancel/de-register students from current term courses for non-payment. Fee Payment Deferrals for Student Aid recipients If you are expecting a Government Student Loan, you may be eligible for a fee payment deferral. Tuition fee deferrals may be arranged prior to the fee payment deadline when students have unforeseen delays in receiving their government student loans. Deferrals are only for students with current Government student loans; no other payment extensions/plans are available through the Financial Aid & Awards Office. Disruptions due to construction Please be advised that there is significant construction taking place inside and outside University Centre during September with no vehicle access to the road around the Administration Building. If you are planning to pay your tuition fees in person please be aware that you may be inconvenienced by this construction. To minimize this inconvenience, the University is encouraging students to pay their fees electronically through web banking or TelPay or if paying in person, to allow sufficient time before the September 8th payment deadline to find parking before visiting the Cashier's Office (138 University Centre) or Cheque Drop Box (located outside the Cashier's Office). For added convenience, the following locations will be accepting cheque payment only on or before Sept 8th: . Welcome Centre at 423 University Crescent. Students can drop off their cheques AFTER 4:30 pm using the drop box located inside the first set of doors at the Welcome Centre. . Arthur Mauro Residence Office at 120 Dafoe Road. To: All Staff, Faculty and Students From: Deborah McCallum, Vice-President (Administration) Date: 18 August 2010 Re: Labour Relations Update - AESES-UMSS (Security Services) As of Wednesday, August 18, 2010, the University of Manitoba and AESES-UMSS (Security Services) have not been successful in reaching a collective agreement. In the event that the University's final offer is not accepted by the members as of Friday, August 20, 2010, an impasse will have been reached and either strike action or a lockout would occur. This would apply only to Security Services Patrol Officers and Supervisors and would not apply to the AESES main bargaining unit. Should a strike or lockout occur: (i) the University will continue to operate in the normal course. Scheduled classes will continue to be held and support services will be maintained; (ii) the University will ensure that security is maintained through the services of one or more security firms. Contact Linda Lavallee, Director Security Services at 474-8709, with any particular concerns that may need to be addressed. All staff, students and the general public have the right to cross picket lines. Action Required Dear all U of M students, As you may be aware, when you graduate from a post-secondary institution and live and work in Manitoba you are eligible for a rebate on tuition paid after December 31, 2003. Manitoba Finance and the Canada Revenue Agency require the University of Manitoba to send your T2202A tax receipt information to them each year to verify your eligibility for this rebate. Your consent is required for the University of Manitoba to begin submitting this information on your behalf. Consent is required only once. T2202A information for 2010 will be sent in early 2011. To provide your consent, log into Aurora Student and go to Enrolment & Academic Records |Declarations | Declare Consent for Release of T2202A Tax Receipt Information. Read the information carefully and either consent or decline to have your information sent to Manitoba Finance and the Canada Revenue Agency in support of the tuition tax credit. If you choose to decline, your T2202A receipt information will not be forwarded to Manitoba Finance and the Canada Revenue Agency. If you do not respond by June 30, 2010 you will be required to do so the next time you log in to register or to access your grades. The Hold that prevents you from registering or viewing grades will be removed immediately after you respond and you may proceed immediately without further delay. i.e. you will not have to log again. Reminder: Voluntary Withdrawal Deadline for Fall/Winter and Winter Term Courses is Friday, March 19, 2010 The deadline for Voluntary Withdrawal from Fall/Winter and Winter Term courses taught during the standard term is this Friday, March 19. VW's must be done through Aurora Student. Courses taught outside the standard term will have different VW deadlines. Note - if you are On Hold for outstanding tuition, library books, parking fines, etc. you will not be able to access the Registration function in Aurora to VW a course. If you are On Hold and plan to VW, you must either first clear your Hold so that you can access the Registration functions in Aurora, or you must contact your Faculty (University 1) advising office for assistance in dropping the course. Are you planning to take courses in Summer Session? Join the thousands of students who take advantage of Summer Session to lighten their load in fall & winter, finish their degree faster, enjoy smaller classes, or catch up on missed or failed courses. Here are some things to know if you are planning to register for Summer Session . Registration begins March 22, 2010. You will be assigned one day during the first week in which you can register. If so, you may be interested in nominating someone you consider to be an exceptional faculty member for the Saunderson & Stanton Excellence in Teaching Award. Nominations are accepted all year for these annual awards provided by the Dr. and Mrs. H.H. Saunderson Award fund and from the bequest of Mrs. Olive Beatrice Stanton. Each award is valued at $2,000, two from the Saunderson Fund and one or two from the Stanton Fund. This is the 42nd year that nominations have been invited for the Stanton Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the 39th year for the Dr. and Mrs. H.H. Saunderson Award for Excellence in Teaching. Fall Term 2009 Revision Deadline Reminders

September 21, 2009 Registration Reminders for 2009-2010 . The last day to add Fall Term and Fall/Winter courses taught during the regular term schedule is Wednesday, September 23. Most students will register for courses through Aurora Student, but remember that if you are repeating a course you must seek approval from an advisor in your academic unit before registering. . The 50% refund of tuition fees on one term courses has been eliminated. Refer to the Refunds <http://umanitoba.ca/student/records/fees/829.htm> web page for details. The deadline to drop a Fall Term course with a full refund of tuition fees is Wednesday, September 23. You may drop Fall Term courses after this date, but you will receive no refund and the drop will appear on your record as a VW (Voluntary Withdrawal). The deadline to VW from Fall Term courses is Wednesday, November 18, 2009. Note that courses taught outside the standard term schedule will have different refund and withdrawal deadlines. Refer to the course outline or teaching unit for further information. . The UM will not cancel/de-register students from current term courses due to non-payment of fees. You are financially and academically responsible for all courses in which you are registered after the Revision deadline - September 23, 2009. Late this past Friday afternoon Winnipeg Police Service announced the arrest of two high school students on charges of conspiracy to commit murder. According to police, the two 17-year-olds had planned to target a number of public institutions, including two high schools, a local church and the University of Manitoba. Police have informed the University that the male and female teens were the sole individuals involved in the alleged plan, and that there was and is no risk to the University of Manitoba community as both individuals remain in custody. Winnipeg Police Service continues to work on the case and liaise directly with the University. Student Parking Update

For those who have not yet paid for their 2008-09 student parking permit, the payment deadline has been extended to FRIDAY, AUGUST 1. If payment is not received by the deadline your parking reservation will be cancelled. In-person payments by cash, cheque or money order are accepted at the Parking Office (125 University Centre). Office hours are weekdays from 8:00am to 4:30pm. If you would like to mail a cheque or money order, please make payable to THE UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA and send to: Parking and Shuttle Services, 125 University Centre, The University of Manitoba, Winnipeg MB R3T 2N2. Write your name, Student Number and vehicle license plate number on the back. Be sure to indicate it is your parking permit fee. Payment must be received by the Friday August 1 deadline. Students in "good standing" may continue in General Studies or, preferably, transfer to a target faculty. While "on probation", students are encouraged to consult regularly with the General Studies student advisor and always prior to registration. If a student does not succeed in achieving a Term GPA of 2.00, they will be placed on "academic suspension" for one calendar year. China Earthquake Relief

This message is being sent on behalf of the Office of the President. Dear Colleagues: I am writing in the aftermath of the recent earthquake in China, to ask for your assistance, and to advise you of the initiatives the broader Chinese community of Winnipeg is undertaking to help the survivors of this tragedy. As many of you are aware, an earthquake of magnitude 8.0 - first reported as 7.8 - hit the province of Sichuan, China, on Monday, May 12. As of May 19, the death toll had reached 34,000 and more than 250,000 were injured. These numbers are expected to rise rapidly in the days to come. Beichuan, a small town at the epicenter of the earthquake, was flattened in seconds. Thousands of students lost their lives in school on that Monday afternoon. The devastation and deaths are of such magnitude that the Government of China has declared three days of national mourning, the first ever in the Chinese history. We have all read stories of natural disasters and sometimes it is hard to comprehend destruction and devastation that is located far away. For many of our students, faculty and staff, however, this tragedy is all too real. Sichuan Province is home to many international students at the University of Manitoba, and several of our professors have their hometowns within 200 km of the epicenter. Furthermore Sichuan University is a sister university of the University of Manitoba, and Winnipeg is a sister city of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province. Dr. Feiyue Wang, a member of our Department of Environment and Geography as well as the Department of Chemistry, and Chair of the Manitoba Chinese Tribune, has advised me that the Chinese and Chinese-Canadian communities of Winnipeg are co-coordinating efforts to provide care and support to the victims of this earthquake. A major benefit performance is planned for May 25 at the Canad Inns - Polo Park. I am attaching the poster describing this event for your information. Your attendance would be most appreciated. If you would like to make a donation, please make your cheque payable to the Canadian Red Cross, earmarked "China Earthquake". Reminder: The Voluntary Withdrawal Deadline for Winter Term 2008 and Fall/Winter 2007/2008 (spanned) courses is Thursday, March 20. You can withdraw from classes through Aurora Student. Students who are on Hold due to outstanding tuition, library books, parking fines, etc. must obtain assistance from a student advisor in their academic unit or the Registrar's Office. Summer Session registration commences the week of March 24 to March 28. Students will be assigned one day during this week in which to register. Each day during this first week of registration an equal number of spaces are released to the registration system. There is no advantage to students who are assigned a registration day that is earlier in the week. Beginning Monday, March 31 all students may register. Check for your registration time on Aurora Student > Enrolment & Academic Records > Registration > Registration Time and Status. Please note: . Register at your earliest opportunity. Space is limited and courses that are in high demand will fill during the first week of registration or shortly after. . Some faculties have courses with irregular withdrawal dates; see your faculty general office for information. Note: The deadline to VW courses that span Fall/Winter 2007/2008 is March 20, 2008. Students on HOLD will be unable to use the registration functions in Aurora to drop a class. If you are on HOLD and unable to withdraw through Aurora, please contact your faculty office by 4:00 PM on Wednesday November 14th for assistance. Your faculty office will withdraw you from the class on request. UPGRADE TO AURORA SYSTEM There will be a scheduled upgrade to Aurora services during the period November 16 to 20. The online application for undergraduate admission service will be unavailable for the period of 12:01 AM November 16 until 8:30 AM November 20. During this time, students may still download paper applications at www.umanitoba.ca/applynow. All other Aurora self-services, including student registration, will be unavailable from noon on November 16 until 8:30 AM on November 20. Staff INB services will also be unavailable during this time. Strike action by CAW staff began today Wednesday, October 10. The CAW includes 480 physical plant staff (caretakers, maintenance, trades, etc.), food service and residence personnel. The University will continue to operate as normal to the extent possible. Classes will continue as scheduled. The libraries will remain open. Students have the right to choose whether or not to cross the picket line. The University will make efforts to reasonably accommodate the student to ensure that the student is not discriminated against as a result of their decision. However, students are responsible for materials covered in class. These students should contact their instructors to discuss reasonable accommodation. All parties, including employees on strike and individuals crossing picket lines, are responsible for refraining from illegal behaviour. Please exercise patience and caution in crossing picket lines. Picket line activity will be video taped and recorded for safety and security purposes and will be made available to Winnipeg Police Service, if necessary. If difficulties are experienced crossing the picket line please contact Security Services at 474-9312. Rogers and MTS Mobility cellular customers can also reach Security Services by dialing #555. Food Services will be reduced, however some locations will remain open as identified below. Students are encouraged to bring their own lunch during the strike. Winnipeg Transit will operate and have indicated that they will cross the picket line. However, staff and students are encouraged to allow extra time to get to work and classes. TO ALL STUDENTS AND STAFF The University and CAW have been bargaining since September 24th in an effort to reach a new Collective Agreement. On October 3, 2007 the University applied for conciliation when negotiations reached an impasse. The CAW membership voted in favour of establishing a strike deadline of midnight Tuesday, October 9, 2007. Should negotiations be unsuccessful in reaching a collective agreement by that date, strike action by CAW staff could take place as early as Wednesday, October 10. The CAW represents approximately 480 University employees in the maintenance trades, powerhouse, general services (truck deliveries, snow clearing, garbage pick up, etc.), grounds, caretaking, residences and food services. In the event of a strike, the University will continue normal operations to the extent possible. Although a CAW labour action may have some impact on aspects of University operations, it is not expected to have a direct impact on the delivery of academic programs. In the event of a strike the following standard employment procedures apply: 1. During a strike all employees have a legal right to work: * All employees have a legal right to cross a picket line and come to work. * Those employees on strike may choose to come to work or not come to work. * Those employees not on strike, including those employees covered by collective agreements other than CAW agreement and excluded employees, have a legal right to work as well as an obligation to come to work. 2. Employees who do not come to work will not be paid and may be subject to discipline. 3. Any picket line incidents or problems should be reported immediately to the University Security Services (474-9312). Winnipeg Police Service is investigating this incident. According to the Winnipeg Police Service, the situation is isolated to the University of Winnipeg. Although no connection has been made to the University of Manitoba, the University reminds its faculty, staff, and students to remain aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious persons and/or criminal offences occurring on University of Manitoba property to Security Services at 474-9312. Patrol Officers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and offer a variety of community services including Safewalk, Non Violent Crisis Intervention Training, Rape Aggression Defence (R.A.D.), and presentations regarding office and personal safety. Registration Notes for 2007-2008 Check your Registration Time & Status Registration is just around the corner. Registration times for returning U of M students begin July 23. If you have not already done so, check for your registration time through Aurora Student. . Select Enrolment & Academic Records>Registration> select the Term Fall 2007 or Winter 2008, then Registration Time & Status. Your registration time will be displayed on this page. You should have the same registration time for both Fall 2007 and Winter 2008. . Please check the Curriculum Information lower down the page. If this program is not the program you intend to register in, please contact your intended faculty. Your registration time may need to be adjusted. . If you have a Hold or Academic Status (such as Suspension) that prevents registration, this will also be noted. If you have been away for awhile and your account has been inactivated as a result, this will also be noted. . If you see that you have a Hold that prevents registration, click View Holds at the bottom of the page for details. Note that Honours and Major students in the Faculty of Science and the Riddell Faculty must have their program approved by their faculty advisor prior to registration. . Laboratory Fees The University of Manitoba has introduced a lab fee for all course sections that include a laboratory component. Three types of lab sections have been identified: . Wet/Bench Labs will be assessed a fee of $30.00 per term for sections that are 3 to 5 credit hours. . Dry Labs /Tutorials and Language Labs will be assessed a fee of $25.00 per term for sections that are 3 to 5 credit hours. Lab Fees are in the process of being set up on applicable course sections. If the fee is in place at the time of registration you will be assessed immediately. Please check your fee statement prior to the fee payment deadline for any Lab Fees that may have been assessed after you had registered. Note that Lab Fees are refundable only up to the Revision Deadline for the applicable term. You may view the Lab Fees attached to a specific course section in the Class Schedule - Detailed Class Information. To view Detailed Class Information in Class Schedule click on the Course Title- CRN- Section Number link. If a Lab Fee has been applied it will appear under the heading: Base Fees (other charges may apply) UMSU Health Dental Plan changes The University of Manitoba Students Union (UMSU) Health & Dental Plan is a group benefit approved by students in a referendum in 2002. Since that time, the university has supported the administration of the plan and continues to do so. All students taking 6 credit hours or more for the Fall Term (excluding Distance Education and Off Campus courses) are automatically enrolled in the plan. The plan fee is $226.55 per year (for 12 months of coverage), though students may add their family (spouse and dependants) for an additional fee of $343.85. Students who have suitable alternate coverage may apply to UMSU to opt out of the plan. Details of the plan and opt-out deadlines are available online, at the UMSU Health and Dental Office in 110 University Centre or by calling 204.474.6666. In an effort to provide information to the insurance provider that is both timely and accurate and to ensure that students have suitable coverage when needed, administration of the opt out process has been changed, effective Fall 2007. The plan premium must be paid to the university, regardless of whether or not you are planning to opt out. If your opt-out application is approved, you will be issued a refund of the Health and Dental Insurance fee directly from UMSU. Go to UMSU.ca for more information on UMSU Health and Dental Insurance and to access the opt-out application form (available in August). Note: Band sponsored students will initially be assessed the UMSU Health & Dental Fee. The fee will be removed from your student account before invoices are sent to Band sponsors. Credit Hours needed per term to be considered Full Time Undergraduates Full Time Status is determined on a per term basis. To be considered full time, most undergraduate students must be enroled in at least 60% of a full course load for the program in which they are registered. For example, in a program in which the normal full load for a Fall/Winter Session is 30 credit hours, full time status is based on 60% of a full term load of 15 credit hours. In this example a student would need to be registered in a minimum of 9 credit hours in a term to be considered full time for that term. As the course load varies between years within a program, faculties have determined a minimum number of credit hours required for each term applicable to all years for specific programs. If you are uncertain of the number of credit hours required to be full time in a term in your program, please consult a Student Advisor in your faculty. Graduate Students Note that, with the exception of students in programs in which fees are assessed on a per credit hour basis (MBA, MPA, Social Work by Dist Ed, Occasional, Pre-Masters), graduate level students are considered full time, unless approved by the department and the Faculty of Graduate Studies for part time study. Students in the programs noted above will be assessed as full time or part time by the rules used for undergraduate students described above (i.e based on registered credit hours.) Information about Official University of Manitoba Transcripts and GPA calculations... Due to the Aurora student information system implementation, official transcripts issued for the past few months have not included Fall 2006 enrolment information. Registration verifications, issued along with official transcripts, provided certification of current enrolment. The Registration verifications also included final grades reported for Fall 2006. Effective immediately, official transcripts now include academic activity that is tracked in the Aurora system. Below is information that will help you understand how your academic activity will be reported and how grade point averages are calculated on the official transcript. Please note that transcripts may be ordered in-person at the Registrars Office, by fax or by mail. Processing time for all transcripts (pick-ups and mail-outs), is two working days. For further information, please refer to the Registrars Office website at: umanitoba.ca/registrar. * Students who studied before September 2006 only will receive a transcript using the old format (see Old Transcript below). * Students whose study began September 2006 and later will receive a transcript using the new format (see New Transcript below). * Students who have studied at the University of Manitoba both before and after September 2006 will receive a two part transcript. * Part 1 will follow the old format (Old Transcript) and will report work completed before September 2006. * Part 2 will follow the new format (New Transcript) and report U of M courses completed September 2006 and onwards, all courses transferred from external institutions, and credit hours and grade points for all courses, including courses completed prior to September 2006. See below for an explanation of grade point average calculations. Course Numbers and Titles Old Transcript Courses identified with department code, an abbreviated course title, and a numeric department number and a three digit course number. e.g PSY INTRODUCTION 17.120 New Transcript Courses are identified with a subject code of up to four characters and four digit course number, along with the full title. Note: courses that span over two terms are listed as two course sections, Part A and Part B. Students who complete a course that spans over both terms will be assigned the same grade for both parts and only when Part B has been completed. e.g PSYC 1200 Introduction to Psychology (Part A) PSYC 1200 Introduction to Psychology (Part B) Level of Study Old Transcript: All levels of study are reported in session sequence. New Transcript Transcript and page numbering is organized by level of study. Work completed within a specific level is reported on the applicable section of the transcript. * Cumulative grade point averages are calculated by level * Previous degrees awarded are reported by level. i.e. Undergraduate degrees awarded are reported on the undergraduate section of the transcript. * Levels of Study: Undergraduate, Graduate, Post Graduate Medical Education Repeat Rule Old Transcript Course repeats are calculated according to faculty rules. Some faculties counted all grades, some counted the highest grades, and some counted the last grade. New Transcript When a course has been repeated, only the last grade is calculated in the grade point average and towards Passed, Earned and GPA hours. All course attempts are counted towards Attempted Hours. Repeated courses that have been excluded from GPA calculations are indicated with an E. Manually included courses are indicated with an I. * Note that indirect transfer credit (unallocated) may be marked with I (included), as students may have more than one credit in a subject area with the same courses number. e.g. ECON 2XXX Transfer Credit 2000 level Grade Point Averages Old Transcript Weighted Grade Points (Weighted GP) The value of the grade assigned multiplied by the credit hour value of the course. e.g.B (3 grade points) x 3 credit hours = 9 Weighted Grade Points New Transcript QualityPoints (QPts) The value of the grade assigned multiplied by the credit hour value of the course. e.g.B (3 grade points) x 3 credit hours = 9 Quality Points Hours Old Transcript Sessional:all credit hours completed within a session, Regular or Summer Cumulative:all credit hours acceptable for credit towards or transferred towards the current faculty. New Transcript AttemptedHours: all courses completed within a level of study. PassedHours: all courses completed within a level of study with a grade of D or better, subject to the Repeat rule. EarnedHours: all courses completed within a level of study, subject to the Repeat rule. GPA Hours: all courses completed within a level of study, subject to the Repeat rule, excluding courses with grades that do not carry a grade point value; e.g. courses graded Pass or Fail. GradePoint Average Calculations Old Transcript WeightGrade Points divided by Hours (sessional or cumulative as defined above). New Transcript GradePoint Average (GPA) Calculation Total Quality Points divided by total GPA hours Term Grade Point Average (TGPA) The grade point average of all courses completed within a given term of study, subject to the Repeat Rule, excluding courses with grades that do not carry a grade point value. Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) The grade point average of all courses completed within a level of study, subject to the Repeat Rule, excluding courses with grades that do not carry a grade point value. Note: The CGPA for students who have academic history before and after September 2006 will include all work completed at and transferred to the U of M, subject to the institutional rule on repeated courses. Due to the change in definition of the cumulative average, this CGPA may differ from the CGPA reported on Part 1 of the transcript. Degree Grade Point Average (DGPA) The grade point average of all courses acceptable for credit in the current degree program, subject to the Repeat rule, excluding courses with grades that do not carry a grade point value. DGPA will be reported for graduates after degrees have been awarded in February 2007. Note:DGPA is not reported for degrees awarded prior to February 2007. For degrees awarded prior to February 2007, please refer to the CGPA reported on the Old Transcript for the grade point average on courses applicable to the degree. Note:DGPA for programs in progress are not currently reported. Faculties are in the process of verifying the courses that contribute toward the DGPA. DGPA will be reported as of April 2007.
