Fall Term 2021 Will Include More In-Person Instruction

To our UM students, faculty and staff, We are a community that thrives on personal connections, and as I noted in my recent messages to the community, this past year has been hard on all of us and we are eager to see the end of it. Today, I am writing with cautious optimism to provide an update on plans for Fall Term 2021. Going forward, we will continue to pursue public health advice on additional opportunities to safely resume in-person activity. In light of current public health advice and expectations on the vaccine rollout, we are planning to resume more in-person instruction this fall. The health and safety of our community remains our first priority, and we believe that a phased transition is prudent. As such, we have set the following limits on in person instruction: * Classes with a maximum registration of 20 students can proceed with in-person instruction, as our spaces permit. * Lab classes will be limited to no more than 25, or to the COVID room-capacity limit, whichever is smaller. * Large classes will continue with remote delivery. Effective immediately, units may plan to allow for an increase in the percentage of employees accessing our campuses up to a maximum of 40 per cent (includes teaching, research and work in support of academic mission). All work that can continue remotely should continue remotely. As the vaccination rollout proceeds and public health orders permit, the UM COVID Recovery Steering Committee will look at reopening other course related and non-instructional activities. We are hopeful to be in a position to declare a full return to face-to-face operations in Winter Term 2022. Our past experience has taught us that we need to remain cautious. The situation can change quickly, but this is what we believe is safe based on what we know right now. We appreciate that there will be questions as we move forward, and we will continue to provide more details and answers in the days and weeks to come. What a year we've had.

Today marks one year since the WHO declared a global pandemic that changed life for our UM community. To our UM student community, A year ago, I was preparing to return to my home province and begin my new role as the University of Manitoba's 12th president and vice-chancellor. I was looking forward to being on our lively campuses again-to meeting with students and seeing you in action. Like all of you, my plans were entirely upended when COVID-19 required us to make drastic and immediate changes to the way we work and socialize. Our University of Manitoba community has lost colleagues, students, friends and family. We have had to grieve, and grieve differently. Our most sacred and meaningful traditions have had to be postponed, abandoned, or entirely reimagined. The flag over Administration Building is at half-mast today in recognition of the National Day of Observance for COVID-19, and to commemorate the people who lost their lives and the significant impacts we have all felt. You have had to study, learn, research, work and make friends differently. You have had to let go of much of what you imagined this year of university would be. I hear you when you say it hasn't been easy. I see your struggles, efforts and contributions. This includes those who joined the fight against COVID-19 during early days<https://news.umanitoba.ca/hundreds-of-um-students-volunteering-to-help-figh…>, and to vaccinate people as we move forward. And those who have volunteered as mentors and supported mental wellness to remind each other that you're not alone. Thousands of students took part in virtual Welcome Day, Career Fairs, and UM's Virtual Community Centre<https://news.umanitoba.ca/3-reasons-you-should-join-the-covid-19-virtual-co…> to support each other and connect. Students continue to push themselves in competitions like Three Minute Thesis<https://news.umanitoba.ca/grad-students-ready-to-shine-in-3mt-heats> and JDC West<https://news.umanitoba.ca/asper-hosts-successful-2021-jdc-west-competition/>. And many of you have participated in academic workshops and counselling groups. In a year like no other, you have shown up and found new ways to thrive. Well done, I know it hasn't been easy. And we must remember that the community has rallied together to support you! Thanks to $3.1M from the Manitoba government's Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative (MSBI) and the generosity of UM alumni and donors, an additional $4 million in bursary support is now available to provide immediate financial assistance to over 5,000 UM students. Our donors are also helping eligible students to acquire needed technology through the COVID-19 UM Student Technology Fund<https://news.umanitoba.ca/technology-now-a-vital-tool-for-pandemic-learning/>. I look forward to welcoming more of our community back to our campuses as it becomes safer to do so. I look forward to joining a crowd of fans to cheer on our Bison athletes, and to enjoying a show from the University of Manitoba Theatre program in the John J. Conklin Theatre. I can hardly wait to stand in front of thousands of proud parents, friends and future alumni at an in-person convocation. And what a gift it will be to hear a live Desautels chamber ensemble sing. As we reflect on how far we've come, and on how much this year has cost us, I am encouraged by the opportunities ahead. Normal service desk hours do not include weekends, but this is deemed necessary due to the higher volume of online midterm exams occurring this term. As the days grow longer, we are reminded that spring is just around the corner, and before long the dark days of winter will be behind us. And, of course, Monday marks the beginning of a much-deserved winter break. It is also the day when we honour Louis Riel, who played a vitally important role in advocating for justice for the Métis people and was recognized by parliament in 1992 as the founder of Manitoba. Riel's vision of a province - a society - that recognizes and embraces all cultures continues to motivate and inspire us today. Reading Week also offers you the opportunity to relax, get caught up with your studies, and refocus so you can complete the term with renewed energy. Reminder - Move your OneDrive files to your new OneDrive folder by April 16

In August 2020, all students were moved to the same UM Microsoft environment as faculty, staff and researchers to enable collaboration. The move included student email but did not include the OneDrive folders. All students have access to a new OneDrive folder. Download any OneDrive files you want to keep from your old folder and move them to your new OneDrive folder BEFORE the end of this academic term. How to access your new OneDrive folder: 1. Navigate to http://portal.office.com 2. Sign in using UMnetID(a)myumanitoba.ca and your password. 3. Select OneDrive. 4. Invitation to Participate in a Research Study: Cross-Canada Release of the Post-Secondary Student Stressors Index (PSSI)

Dear Student, You are invited to participate in a cross-Canada research study to evaluate post-secondary student stress led by Dr. Brooke Linden (Principal Investigator, Queen’s University). The Post-Secondary Student Stressors Index (PSSI) was designed to help post-secondary institutions across Canada better target campus mental health services, with the ultimate goal of improving mental health outcomes for students. To ensure that the PSSI would serve students in the best possible way, students were involved heavily throughout the development and testing of this tool. Now it’s time to use the PSSI at post-secondary institutions across Canada to improve our understanding of the types of stressors students are managing in different parts of the country. We are looking for student volunteers to complete an online survey a few times over the course of the 2020-2021 academic year. The first survey was conducted in October. We are now looking for volunteers to complete the survey in January and in March. If you did not participate in the survey in October, you can still participate this month! The survey should take you about 20 mins to complete. As a thank you for participating, you will have the opportunity to submit your e-mail into a draw after each survey for a chance to win one of several $25-$50 gift cards. Whether you are new to the UM community or continuing in your studies, we are here to support your personal and academic success. As you will have read in President Benarroch's message this week, in keeping with our continued commitment to the safety and wellbeing of the UM community, Summer Term 2021 will be delivered primarily remotely. While we are all encouraged by the news that vaccinations are slowly rolling out in Manitoba, each of us must continue to be vigilant in ensuring our own health and safety and that of others in our community. It's been an unusual year, and you have handled it with grace and tenacity. As you complete final assignments and enter the final exam period, I encourage you to remain focused on your studies. The holiday break is right around the corner! I'm writing today to provide an important update, to share resources that have been developed to support your academic success, and to wish you well in the last weeks of the Fall Term. Last week, grading accommodations recommended by the UM's Covid-19 Recovery Steering Committee and sub-committees, which include representatives from UMSU and UMGSA, were approved by Senate. These grading accommodations were established in recognition of the potential impact that increased stresses and challenges associated with remote learning may have on academic performance, particularly during this prolonged Code Red period in Winnipeg. What are the grading accommodations for Fall Term 2020 and Winter Term 2021? You may choose to exclude from your UM GPA either: a) up to one (1) grade received in Fall Term, and up to one (1) grade received in Winter Term, or b) up to one (1) grade received in a spanned course which runs through both Fall and Winter terms. Your adjusted GPA resulting from exclusion of one or two grades will be used for all GPA-based performance requirements including program progression, probation, suspension, and requirements to withdraw, and to determine eligibility for UM bursaries and scholarships. The 'excluded' grade will remain on your UM transcript. It will be used for progression and prerequisite regulations that specifically reference minimum letter grade requirements, and will continue to be included in the GPA used for admission to advanced entry, professional, and graduate programs. You have lots of time to make your decision. You will have until the end of Winter Term 2021 to make your exclusion decisions for both Fall Term 2020 and Winter Term 2021. More details concerning the process will be communicated in January. How could these grading accommodations help you? The goal is to provide students with some accommodation for potential negative effects on academic performance arising from the increased stresses and challenges associated with remote learning, which have been exacerbated by the increasingly serious pandemic situation in Winnipeg. You will be able to reduce possible negative impacts of the current situation without compromising UM academic standards or integrity. This approach benefits students equally, including those who must maintain enrolment in a minimum number of credit-hours in order to remain eligible for funding. Get informed about the implications of your choice, before your make your final decision. Choosing to exclude one grade from your UM GPA could have implications for your academic trajectory, particularly if you are considering furthering your studies beyond your current target degree. Classes continue: UMFA agrees to bring UM offer to its membership

University of Manitoba President Michael Benarroch announced today that classes will continue and that the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) has agreed to bring UM’s latest offer to its membership. “We are thankful that students are able to continue their classes and academic activities,” said Benarroch. “To our faculty, we value and respect you as indispensable collaborators in our shared mission of advanced research and higher education. We are pleased that our community will be able to continue teaching, learning and researching at UM without interruption while the voting process takes place.” Today’s announcement follows mediation overseen by independent mediator Arne Peltz. We thank Mr. Peltz for his hard work and both negotiating teams for their dedication to the collective bargaining process. UM’s offer is subject to ratification by UMFA members. To respect the ratification process, the University will not discuss the specifics of the offer at this time except to say that it met the 2020-21 province-issued wage mandate to hold the line on salary increases.

[cid:image002.jpg@01D531AE.174C13F0] Good afternoon students, As you will have likely read in President Benarroch’s message<https://news.umanitoba.ca/um-update-on-umfa-negotiations/>, UM is currently in the process of collective bargaining with the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA). This weekend UMFA is putting a vote to its members regarding a potential strike. This does not mean that a strike will in fact occur. Bargaining between the two parties is continuing and we hope to reach a resolution. Some of you have reached out with questions about what this might mean for you, and expressed concern for your professors. I want to reiterate the message that President Benarroch conveyed to you – that we are all hopeful that the collective bargaining process will result in a positive outcome for everyone. Our faculty members and their contributions to the University are deeply valued. They are key to your learning experience and to your success. To give you some background, collective bargaining is a process of negotiating the terms and conditions of employment that occurs between employers and unions at universities across Canada. This particular set of negotiations is called a “wage re-opener” because only wages are open for discussion. All provisions of the current collective agreement expire on March 31, 2021 and the entire collective agreement will be open for discussion at that time. UM is committed to avoiding further disruptions during an academic year that has been challenging unlike any other. We know how much you have invested in your post-secondary education and the continuation of your studies remains our priority. We know these are stressful times. Message from the President and Vice-Presidents on UMFA bargaining

As today’s news of code red status for Winnipeg and code orange for the rest of Manitoba reminds us, we are living through extraordinarily challenging times. First, we thank our entire community for pulling together and working in new ways to help our students succeed. As the administrators appointed to lead the University of Manitoba and sustain its long-term operations, we understand and appreciate the remarkable flexibility and accommodation shown by the entire university community in response to the global pandemic, in particular by the students and the faculty and staff, as we have moved to primarily remote academic program delivery. We thank you, and we reiterate our commitment to supporting student success. Members of our university community are understandably concerned this week about the collective bargaining negotiations between the University of Manitoba and the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) that have not yet reached a positive outcome. We cannot speak about the specifics of the bargaining because we are committed to a fair bargaining process, but we want to assure you that our focus remains on reaching an agreement, at the bargaining table. Our priority is doing what we can to prevent any further disruption to students’ lives. We have met with UMFA eight times since August 20 and are ready to return to the table at any time. August 20 was the date both parties agreed to begin these discussions. These discussions are what is termed a “salary re-opener,” with the main matter to be resolved being UMFA salaries for one year, as the University and UMFA agreed to do four years ago. The collective bargaining agreement with UMFA expires on March 31, 2021, at which time we will need to begin bargaining for a new agreement. We continue to believe the best course of action is to continue our discussions with UMFA. The impacts of the global pandemic and other factors have altered our current reality and imposed unique constrictions this year. The University remains committed ultimately to bringing UMFA salaries more in line with salaries at peer universities. At this time, with so many external pressures on all of us, most especially students, their health and well-being remain are utmost concern. We remind everyone to adhere to the guidelines shared with us by public health officials. Stay healthy. I wanted to take this opportunity to check in with you, to share some reminders of the resources that are available to support you academically and personally, and to provide you with some updates on the Winter Term, fees and student loans. Throughout the month we are offering a range of events focusing on stress management, academic writing, research skills, cultural adaptation and identity, and career preparation. I encourage you to attend the sessions that would be most helpful to you. Mid-term exams are also upon us, and there are some important things you need to know. If you have been made aware that your exam will require installation and set-up of Repondus LockDown Browser or Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor, a resource is available for you. It is designed to help you complete a quick review of the fundamentals of academic integrity before learning how to download, install, and run Respondus LockDown Browser. You can also complete a practice exam (as many times as you wish) to become familiar with the setup of an exam with this e-proctoring software enabled. Please take advantage of these resources if you need help. As previously announced, Winter Term will be delivered remotely, with the exception of a very small number of courses that require in-person delivery - similar to the Fall Term experience. Please note that the Winter course schedule and the registration system Aurora won't be available from November 2-17. During this time, updates will be made to the winter schedule and the preliminary summer term schedule will be uploaded. If you are required to come to campus, Security Services has launched a mobile campus safety app called UM Safe. UM Safe sends safety alerts and provides instant access to campus safety resources. It includes "Work Alone" and "FriendWalk" features, and a Mobile BlueLight safety feature similar to the stationary blue lights on our campuses. Once again, the Sport and Rec Fee<http://umanitoba.ca/community/sport-recreation/um-sport-and-recreation-faci…> will be applied to all UM students' tuition at a reduced rate for the Winter Term. The rate will be reduced to 70 per cent of the standard Sport and Rec Fee and assessed at $62.92 for full-time students and $47.18 for part-time students. Full-time students are generally those with 60 per cent of a full course load, which equates to three courses. The partial assessment of the Sport and Rec Fee enables UM sport and recreation facilities and services to operate and safely support students through access to facilities and programming<http://umanitoba.ca/community/sport-recreation/recreation-services/membersh…> (on-site and online) that contribute to physical health, mental wellbeing and student success. After extensive consultation with students, UMSU has decided that there will not be a U-Pass program in the Winter 2021 term. It is currently expected to return in Fall 2021. However, if you are required to come to campus for in-person academic commitments, are experiencing financial hardship, and rely on Winnipeg Transit, you may qualify for UMSU's Transit Subsidy. This subsidy will cover the additional $78 charge for a post-secondary semester e-pass. It is also important to note that UMSU's<https://umsu.ca/> Hardship Fund offers small grants and loans for students facing extenuating circumstances. The National Student Loan Service Centre (NSLSC) recently made changes to the student loans program to help students and grads manage during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, if you were in repayment status during summer 2020, NSLSC ensured all payments stopped until September 30th. Repayments begin again this month - but if you are having trouble with your monthly payments, there are options for you to consider. As you may have heard, the federal government has also released a free app, which I encourage you to download. The COVID Alert app<https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/coronavirus-diseas…> alerts you to possible COVID-19 exposures before symptoms appear, so that you can take care of yourself and protect your community. If you need to visit the campus for academic reasons, I would like to remind you that wearing a mask is mandatory on all UM campuses. This applies at all times when indoors, even when physical distancing is possible. The only exception is for very brief periods of time while you are eating or drinking and still physically distanced from others or if you are alone in an office and physical distanced from others. Students living in residence are asked to wear a face mask in all common areas. If you are exercising in the Active Living Centre or the Joe Doupe Recreation Centre, you may remove your mask as long as you maintain physical distancing from others. However, you must still wear a mask when entering and exiting the facilities and as you move from the locker room to the exercise floors and between stations. SURVEY REMINDER: Are you an international student studying at the University of Manitoba? My name is Jonathan Worae and I am a Graduate student at the department of Sociology and Criminology. My advisor is Dr. Jason Edgerton. I am conducting an MA thesis on the topic: A Descriptive Survey Study of International Students’ Experiences Studying at the University of Manitoba: Motivations, Challenges, Coping Strategies and Supports. If you have already completed this survey then thank you for your time, you can ignore this reminder. If you haven’t yet taken the survey please consider taking the time to fill it out —all answers are anonymous and it is hoped that the data collected will help improve international students’ university experiences in future. In this study, international students are invited to participate in an online survey that seeks to find out about their experiences studying at the University of Manitoba. Only international students studying at the University of Manitoba who are currently residing in Winnipeg, or have resided in Winnipeg at some point during their studies at U of M, are asked to participate. The wearing of masks is now mandatory on UM campuses even when physical distancing is possible. The only exceptions are: * For short periods of time when someone is eating or drinking while physically distanced from others * If someone is alone in their office and physically distanced from others * During strenuous exercise in UM physical activity centres The Province of Manitoba has also announced that "Manitoba's public health officials will be elevating the #RestartMB Pandemic Response System level for the Winnipeg Metropolitan Region to Restricted (orange) effective Sept. 28, with new measures being put in place to help slow the spread of COVID-19". This includes the directive that "masks will be mandatory in all indoor public places in these communities". Distribution of cloth masks Faculty, staff and students will be given a reusable cloth mask that can be picked up as per below. Please note that due to limited quantities, no more than two masks per person are available. Fort Garry Campus: At the Fort Garry campus, students and staff may pick up their masks at the following locations: * Welcome Centre from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. M-F * Elizabeth Dafoe Library from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. M-F * Science and Technology Library from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. M-F Bannatyne Campus: Pick up locations and hours of operation are: * Brodie Centre main doors, 727 McDermot Avenue from 5:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. * Dentistry building, 780 Bannatyne Avenue from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. * Apotex side entrance, 750 McDermot Avenue from 6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. * Rehab Sciences building, 771 McDermot Avenue from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. As health and safety is our overarching priority, strict protocols are being followed at these stations including plexiglass shields, hand sanitizing stations, signage and fencing to ensure directional consistency and socially distanced flow throughout. In order to avoid congestion, you should pick up your masks when you are coming to campus(es), and only if you are required to come to campus. However, as mandated by the Province, most existing orders and rules for educational institutions remain the same, including for the University of Manitoba. Good afternoon, I know that what you value most in these challenging times is certainty and stability, and so today we are sharing with all students, faculty, instructors and staff that the University of Manitoba's Winter Term 2021 will be delivered primarily remotely, with the exception of a small number of in-person courses, similar to your Fall Term experience. We made this decision as early as possible in order to enable you to plan the rest of your academic year accordingly. Circumstances surrounding COVID-19 could potentially change, but today, with our priority your safety, health and well-being, continuing with primarily remote delivery is the most prudent course of action. Over the course of my first three months as president, I have seen examples of innovation in teaching and operations that have impressed me deeply and reminded me of the resiliency and flexibility, the creativity and dedication, of our community. Staff from across the university have come together in record time to adapt programming to online delivery. This includes the creation of new and exciting platforms such as UM Commons for our new students on which we have seen tremendous participation from students. Amid so much "noise" and disruption, you are all making this - our core functions of teaching and learning, discovery and engagement - work remarkably well. Students, please know that everyone associated with the University of Manitoba is working hard to ensure your success. We want this year to be special for you - in positive ways, so that as you continue your studies or move into the professional world, you feel thoroughly prepared for what lies ahead. I want to thank and recognize our instructors and faculty members, who have demonstrated their commitment to students, and to continuing their research, scholarship, outreach and creative activities. Each of you has found ways to connect with students, to inspire and motivate, to engage. Recreation Services Student Waiver/Agreement

Dear students, In a continued effort to promote wellness and active living across our campuses, Recreation Services<http://umanitoba.ca/community/sport-recreation/recreation-services/membersh…> has been working hard behind the scenes to ensure we are meeting and exceeding government regulations through the ongoing and safe re-opening of our Sport and Recreation Facilities. >From September 8, UM students will have access to the Active Living Centre at the Fort Garry campus and the Joe Doupe Recreation Centre at the Bannatyne campus. NEW waiver/agreement - In order to book a workout or group fitness class online, you must first complete a Gym Waiver/Agreement that outlines the assumption of risk (including risk due to COVID-19), release of liability, waiver of claims and indemnity agreement. If you are 18 years of age or older, you will do this by logging in to your Aurora account<https://aurora.umanitoba.ca/banprod/twbkwbis.P_WWWLogin> and following the pathway outlined below: Enrollment & Academic Records > Declarations > Gym waiver/agreement If you are under 18 years of age, a parent or legal guardian must sign your Gym Waiver/Agreement. Please visit our website to download and print the form<http://umanitoba.ca/sites/default/files/2020-09/assumption-of-risk-release-…>. The fully completed form must be emailed to rec_services(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:rec_services@umanitoba.ca> to be processed. Once your completed Gym Waiver/Agreement has been received, either online (if over 18) or by email (if under 18), please allow at least two business days for Recreation Services to activate your account. Once your account has been activated you will be able to start booking your workouts online. Please note that in order to prepare for Fall Term, student gym access will not be available from September 1 to September 7. Booking your workouts - In order to maintain physical distance regulations and accommodate cleaning protocols, both the Active Living Centre and Joe Doupe Recreation Centre will be operating at limited capacity. All workouts will be available in 90-minute blocks and you will be able to book your spot up to two days in advance starting 7:00 AM on September 8th. Step 1: Make sure you have completed your waiver/agreement. Step 2: Login to our online registration system<https://sportandrec.umanitoba.ca/UOFM/public> using your U of M student email. **If you create a new account you will not be able to book workout times.** Step 3: Book your workout or group fitness class in advance online. A Message from President Michael Benarroch regarding Scholar Strike Canada

The University of Manitoba is a community where we exchange ideas, where we shine a light on past actions and hard truths, and where we question established patterns. We do this work because it allows us to grow, both as individuals and as a community. Our community and our nation are now at a crossroads, and we must ask ourselves - how will we listen, how will we learn, and how will we grow? Canada's academic community has been invited to participate in Scholar Strike, planned for September 9 and 10. We intend to empower our community members to participate so that they can listen, learn, and grow. Participation in this action is voluntary, and the University supports its community members using this time in the way that will benefit them most. Participation can also take many forms. Some in the academic community will choose to directly participate in these two days of reflection and learning, while others will search for different ways to advocate for change, such as in-class exploration, deepened research, or joining online anti-racism sessions. Faculty and instructors who choose to participate in Scholar Strike are asked to communicate to students and to their Academic Administrator any changes to class schedules or academic obligations with as much advance notice as possible as per the Responsibilities of Academic Staff with Regard to Students Policy. I want to be clear - the University of Manitoba condemns all forms of racism. Anti-BIPOC racism (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) has no place on our campuses, in our curricula, or in our governance systems. Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion must form the bedrock of our institution, and indeed, all modern and accessible universities in Canada.   In order to add students to the same UM Microsoft environment as UM faculty, staff, and researchers, UM student email will be unavailable from Friday, August 21st at 4:30 P.M. to Monday, August 24th at 8:30 A.M. This will enable students to use Microsoft Office 365 tools, such as Teams or OneDrive, and to collaborate seamlessly with all members of the UM community.   During this brief outage, email access will remain available for faculty, researchers, and staff.      Students will have the following experience    * Email unavailable:  You will have no access to your UM email accounts after 4:30 p.m. on August 22 until 8:30 a.m. August 24. However, your Inbox will continue to receive email during the outage. * Waitlist paused: Aurora Waitlist notifications will not be sent out during the outage. The Registrar will resume notifying waitlisted students of course availability once email access is restored. * Access restored:  Your Inbox will continue to receive email during the outage. Sport and Recreation Fees

[cid:image002.jpg@01D531AE.174C13F0] Dear Students, The Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management (FKRM) has been actively working with UM's COVID-19 Recovery Working Group on a phased approach to re-opening sport and recreation facilities at both the Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses. As such, the Sport and Rec Fee will be applied to all UM students' tuition at a reduced rate for the Fall Term. The rate, 70 per cent of the standard Sport and Rec Fee, will be assessed at $62.92 for full-time students and $47.18 for part-time students. The partial assessment of the Sport and Rec Fee enables UM sport and recreation facilities and services to operate and safely support students through access to facilities and programming (on-site and online) that contribute to physical health, mental wellbeing and student success. At present, the Active Living Centre at the Fort Garry campus, including group fitness class offerings, are operational at reduced capacity with changes to processes to ensure government, health and UM regulations related to COVID-19 are met. * All users are being asked to complete a waiver, provided by email from Recreation Services, before they can access the facilities and make bookings. While the Frank Kennedy Centre, including gyms, studios, courts, the community change room, and the Joyce Fromson Pool remain closed, feasibility to re-open those areas in alignment with health regulations will continue to be evaluated. ALC to re-open Monday, July 27

The Active Living Centre is re-opening Monday, July 27. The opening of the Active Living Centre is an important step in the process to recovery and re-opening at UM as its function supports our commitment to active living and the wellness of our entire community. Ordinarily UM students pay the Sport and Rec Fee<http://umanitoba.ca/registrar/tuition-fees> as a part of tuition costs to access Sport and Recreation Facilities<http://umanitoba.ca/community/sport-recreation/sport-and-recreation-facilit…>. This fee was not applied for Summer Term. As the Active Living Centre closed its doors on March 13, a month before the end of Winter Term, UM students who were enrolled in Winter Term 2020 will be able to re-activate their student membership to use the Active Living Centre for the remainder of the summer, honouring the fee they had paid for Winter Term. Students should watch for a follow up email from Recreation Services in the coming week with details on how to re-activate their student membership. To ensure the health and safety of everyone and in order to meet, and exceed government regulations, important changes to operations have been made: * Hours of operation will be Monday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. * To ensure physical distancing, there will be a 100-member capacity in the facility at any one time. This represents approximately 25 per cent of the Active Living Centre’s capacity. * Members will book 90-minute workout blocks to guarantee a workout time. Booking details to come. * Thorough facility cleaning and sanitization will occur in-between blocks. Hand sanitizer will be available at the entrance, at the exit and throughout the facility. Participants will be asked to apply hand sanitizer immediately after entry and upon leaving the facilities. * Water fountains will be turned off (please bring your own water or sports drinks). * Group fitness classes will also be offered, but on a reduced basis. Before entering the facility, staff and participants must use the self-screening tool<https://sharedhealthmb.ca/covid19/screening-tool/>. Entry will not be allowed entry if anyone presents with COVID-19 symptoms. Fort Garry Campus Student Locker Access Available July 20-24

This decision was made within a tight timeframe, and many of you were unable to retrieve personal belongings from your locker. To support you in collecting any needed personal items, the Fort Garry campus will be hosting a locker clean-out week from Monday, July 20th until Friday, July 24th from 9:00am until 4:00pm. As noted below, each day of the week a specific zone of the campus will be opened to allow students within that zone to retrieve their belongings and clean out their lockers. No registration is required. All students participating in this clean-out exercise must adhere to the following safety precautions: q While not mandatory, you are encouraged to wear a mask while visiting campus. q If you have returned from international or domestic travel in the last 14 days or have cold or flu-like symptoms (cough, fever, runny nose, sore throat, headache, etc.) you are not permitted to participate. q A designated free parking lot and check-in station for each zone has been established and must be used while visiting. Throughout the presidential search, we were compelled by Dr. Benarroch’s deep commitment to the values expressed in UM’s mission and vision and by his capacity to develop and articulate a shared institutional purpose and strategy. We are confident that he will advance the university’s reputation for driving discovery and inspiring minds through innovative teaching and research. He is also a highly regarded community leader who will continue to strengthen partnerships and ensure UM remains guided and informed by Indigenous knowledge and perspectives. He is keen to continue to build and foster a culture of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and to address matters of racism, discrimination and sexual violence proactively and directly. Dr. Benarroch brings to this role his inspiring energy and passion for the life-changing possibilities of higher education and his dedication to the province and the UM community. Those of us who have had the opportunity to work and meet with him know Dr. Benarroch to be a warm, collegial and dedicated leader who cares deeply about the success of this university, this province and its people. We look forward to his return, in this new capacity, to the University of Manitoba community. Born in Tangier, Morocco, Dr. Benarroch immigrated to Canada with his family when he was three years old and considers Winnipeg his home. Along with his three brothers, he was the first in his family to attend university and holds a BA (Hons) from the University of Winnipeg, a MA in economics from Western University, and a PhD in economics from Carleton University. >From 2013 to 2017, he led the I. UM students (both domestic and international) can play a major role in helping us better understand travel health for people currently enrolled in university. We are therefore inviting you to participate in a survey on your travel knowledge, activities and practices. The survey also includes specific questions on your knowledge and practices for COVID-19, and on university communications on COVID-19. This will help universities improve their communications for both this and future outbreaks. The survey may be accessed at the link provided below. It should take 10 to 15 minutes to complete. As many of you know, yesterday we announced the University's plans for Fall Term. At the forefront of our considerations are the safety and well-being of the UM community, and our ongoing commitment to deliver an educational experience of the highest quality for our students. In keeping with public health and government directives, we will be offering the Fall Term primarily remotely, with the exception of a very small number of courses that require in-person delivery. Students will know in advance of registration which courses will be held in person, so you can make informed course selections. While we are all disappointed that we will not be together in person in the Fall, please know that we are exploring every avenue to deliver a robust student experience virtually. We are working in collaboration with UMSU, UMGSA, teaching and learning experts, and the faculties to develop plans that promote student learning, engagement and academic success. This includes opportunities to connect with faculty, other students in your courses and programs; counselling, academic advising and career supports; clubs and much more. Be wary of gift card requests that seem to be from people you know

Phishing and other scam emails are hitting institutions at a marked increase because of the coronavirus pandemic. One of the most recent fraud scams is the gift card request from the address of an authority figure like a dean or professor. This is the typical progression of this kind of scam: 1. The scammer impersonates the authority figure with a fake email address. 2. You are sent a generic message such as, "Are you available?" 3. If they get a response, the scammer gives some excuse about why they can’t be contacted by phone. 4. The scammer will then make an urgent request. 5. Typically, the request is to purchase iTunes cards or some other gift card currency. 6. If the scammer obtains the numbers on those cards, they can resell them for profit. How do I identify this kind of scam? Recipients of these emails should be wary of the following techniques: * Unsolicited email involving an online financial service or wire transfer. * "Soft opening" techniques, such as brief emails asking whether you are in the office today or other seemingly harmless questions. * Cryptic messages from an authority figure stating there is an urgent matter. * Requests to click links or attachments. What can I do if I think I’ve received one of these messages? If you think you have received an email message from a scammer: * Be careful about replying to the original email with too much information. * Pay attention to the reply-to address. Is it the same as the "From:" address? * Call to confirm with the sender if possible. In some cases, the email account may be compromised. * Hover over suspicious links to reveal the true destination of the URL. * Send the email to spam(a)umanitoba.ca <mailto:spam@umanitoba.ca> or infosec(a)umanitoba.ca <mailto:infosec@umanitoba.ca> for a second look. Congratulations - our hard work is making a difference! Now that exams are finished, many of you are looking ahead to your Summer and Fall Terms. Let me assure you that although campus may be closed right now, your university is open - and will remain open - to fully support your education. As you know, it was announced several weeks ago that all summer term courses would be offered online - either in the usual Distance Education (DE) format (commencing May 4) or as Remote Learning courses (beginning June 1). I am highly encouraged by the number of students who have already registered to take DE courses - your eagerness to continue your studies inspires us all. In this communication I have a few updates and reminders to share: Consider your grading options. Students have four grading options for courses completed in the Winter Term 2020 and courses that spanned both the Fall and Winter Terms 2019-2020: 1. You can keep your letter grades as they are. 2. You can keep your letter grade but have it excluded from your GPA. 3. If you receive a letter grade that you aren't happy with, you can opt to have a "P" appear on your transcript instead. A number of faculties have created quick reference information to help you understand the different grading options, you can read about those here<https://centre.cc.umanitoba.ca/altgrading/>. 4. You can voluntarily withdraw from the course. You will have until 11:59 pm on May 10, 2020 to decide which grading option is best for you. To make your choice, log into UM Learn<https://universityofmanitoba.desire2learn.com/d2l/login> and follow the instructions. Courses that have final grades in Aurora will be added to your record overnight, so if your grades aren't there yet check back again the next day. If you receive a final grade after May 10th you have 10 calendar days to request a change through your home faculty. Registering for Summer Term Remote Learning Courses. To help students who wish to get ahead in their studies, we will be offering an extensive list of Remote Learning courses for the Summer Term. The complete list of course offerings will be made available on Aurora on May 4th. You can register for courses that begin on or after June 1 starting on May 19. (Registration is already open for Summer Term Distance Education courses and Masters/PhD Re-Reg thesis courses.)
