UM Learn content update for all students

We heard from you that not being able to access all courses in UM Learn was an issue. We addressed this as quickly as possible to reduce any additional stress this caused you. If an instructor is on strike, you are not responsible for any course work, assignments or exams in that course during the strike period. Those classes will resume at the end of the strike. If your instructor returns to work before the end of the strike, you are responsible for any of your courses and relevant work, assignments or exams that are continuing. The list of continuing courses is being updated regularly, so please check the list<https://umanitoba.ca/registrar/continuing-courses> often. As a result, UMFA has commenced strike action beginning today, Tuesday, November 2nd. We realize this causes disruption for you. We will take every reasonable measure to support you through this time, including maintaining instruction for courses not being taught by UMFA members, and providing access to core services and resources. We will share as much information with you as possible as it becomes available - via email, website and our social media accounts. UMFA rejects UM's latest offer and moves to strike

UM presented UMFA with a strong offer that included a two-year monetary proposal with both general salary increases across the board and changes to the salary structure that would increase salaries an average of 9.5% over two years and substantially increase lifetime earnings of members. UMFA has rejected the offer and indicated its intention to strike. UM and UMFA representatives began negotiating a new collective agreement on Aug. 5 – and after 18 meetings, both parties agreed to move to mediation. UMFA set a bargaining deadline and mediation ended today without an agreement. UM is willing to continue with mediation, however UMFA has indicated that it will proceed with a strike on Nov. 2. "We are disappointed that UMFA has rejected our offer and moved to strike," says President and Vice-Chancellor, Michael Benarroch. "We strongly believe it's a fair deal as it would allow us to recruit new faculty with more competitive offers, support faculty retention, and ensure faculty wages remain competitive with their U15 counterparts as they advance in their careers. We hope to be back at the table soon."  Throughout the negotiations, UMFA has continued to seek salary compensation from the university for what UMFA says was lost from 2016 to 2020. As part of a lawsuit against the government, UMFA is seeking damages for lost wages for that period and expenses from the 2016 strike. UM is not part of that litigation. The courts will hear UMFA's claim in November 2021 and decide on damages payable to UMFA by the government. UM does not believe it is appropriate for UMFA to seek this compensation from both the university and the government. "The university has bargained in good faith throughout the last few months and has tabled several offers, all in an attempt to reach an agreement," says Provost and Vice-President Academic, Diane Hiebert-Murphy. "Our latest offer is truly a strong offer that will provide meaningful increases to all UMFA members in the long term, as well as address recruitment and retention issues and provide for stability to the university community." This has been featured in news coverage over the weekend and it is understandable that you are wondering what impact this might have on you and your studies. Even with a date set, the vote does not mean a strike is certain. It means that union leaders have approval from their members to choose to strike if they are not satisfied with how negotiations are going. The university bargaining team, who are the people at the table negotiating with the association, is working to reach a new agreement and there is still an opportunity for that to happen. If there is a strike, or any other sort of labour action, the university will remain open. Bargaining to continue following UMFA strike mandate

[cid:image001.png@01D7C4F6.4FA0B4D0] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor To our university community, We learned today that that University of Manitoba Faculty Association members voted to give their union a strike mandate. I want to assure you that the university will continue to bargain in good faith with UMFA, with the intention of concluding a collective agreement without a labour disruption. At this time, all classes and campus activities will continue as usual. Staff who have been working on campus can continue to do so. Since bargaining began on August 5, we've seen meaningful progress on many articles and proposals. The university is committed to addressing challenges with faculty recruitment and retention and ensuring that each department offers an outstanding teaching and learning experience. We have proposed significant structural changes to enhance pay-scales for year 1 and 2 (please see the full presentation here<https://umanitoba.ca/bargaining/sites/bargaining/files/2021-10/UM-salary-co…>). We recognize the need for market supplements and have made a proposal to continue them in this round of bargaining with UMFA. On October 13, the university offered UMFA a four-year contract with the following increases: 1% in Year 1, 1% in Year 2, and 1.25% in Year 3, and 1.25% in Year 4. The entirety of our proposal recognizes our commitment to make faculty salaries more competitive within the U15 and regional landscape, while providing stability for students and staff. The university fully respects the bargaining process and the union's right to take strike action if it believes that is in the best interest of its members. However, the university believes strongly that we can reach a fair agreement for UMFA members and we will continue to work hard to achieve this. I know the bargaining process can create tension and stress for many in our community; we all feel this. I care deeply about what happens in these negotiations as I know we all do. I am incredibly proud of our community's commitment to provide an outstanding student experience and to ensure UM is the internationally competitive research university that Manitoba deserves. This work will help us prepare for a full planning process, to be launched in 2022, that will result in a new strategic plan for the University of Manitoba. Since spring 2020, when we presented our final report<https://umanitoba.ca/sites/default/files/2020-06/strategic-plan-2015-2020-f…> on Taking Our Place: University of Manitoba Strategic Plan 2015-2020, UM has continued to fulfill all the priorities laid out in the plan. The COVID-19 pandemic presented our community with immense challenges, but also with opportunities to learn and innovate. Indeed, the resilience we've seen across our university as we adapt to new ways of doing things is nothing short of inspiring. In the coming months and years, we will work together to evaluate what we've learned and to build on innovations that can strengthen our institution beyond the pandemic. The tremendous goodwill and confidence expressed by you-our community-is empowering our efforts to chart the university's future during continued uncertainty. In recent months, we heard from close to 2,000 members of the UM community about what matters most to them. Because of your feedback, we will focus on post-COVID planning and further our progress on anti-racism, experiential learning, Indigenous achievement and engagement, and equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). Our unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and addressing climate change will inform all our plans and priorities. Upload your proof of vaccination now

[cid:image001.png@01D7C04A.EE35B8D0] UM SAFE RETURN UPDATE On August 19, President Benarroch announced all faculty, staff, students and campus visitors will be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. In September<https://news.umanitoba.ca/proof-of-vaccination-process-rolls-out/>, we launched the process for employees and students to provide proof of full vaccination and the initial response rate was very good, with over 16,000 students and employees having uploaded their proof of vaccination. Thank you to those who have already uploaded their proof! A team is now in place to review and verify all submissions. You will only be contacted if further information is required. As we move further into fall and closer to Winter Term, we need to gain a complete picture of the vaccination rate of the UM community to make decisions about what a healthy and safe campus will look like in January. To do this, we need all students and employees to upload their proof of vaccination now, and not wait until the deadline. This includes all students who are learning remotely and are not currently on campus, as well as all employees who are working from home. You can upload your proof of vaccination on UM's secure site<https://covid-declaration.umanitoba.ca/> - it's quick and easy, with people reporting that it took them only two minutes. For those who are not fully vaccinated, we encourage you to get your vaccinations as soon as possible. University Health Service has appointments available<https://news.umanitoba.ca/um-vaccination-clinic-book-your-appointment-now/> for both first and second doses. You can also visit the province's vaccine page<https://protectmb.ca/> for information on making arrangements to be vaccinated. One of the most important steps you can take to protect yourself and others from COVID-19 is to get vaccinated. Currently, all students and employees who are not fully vaccinated and coming onto our campuses must undergo COVID-19 asymptomatic rapid testing. The Rady Faculty of Health Sciences has implemented asymptomatic testing protocols for all individuals accessing the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences including all buildings on the Bannatyne campus and the Helen Glass building on the Fort Garry campus. Testing is required every 48 hours to access Rady Faculty of Health Sciences buildings. On Fort Garry campus and other satellite locations, employees and students who are not fully vaccinated are required to undergo COVID-19 asymptomatic rapid testing prior to participating in any activity on campus. Proof of Vaccination Process

[cid:image001.png@01D7A966.E5D21DF0] Message from Dr. Todd Mondor, Chair, COVID-19 Recovery Steering Committee September 14, 2021 As President Benarroch noted earlier today in his email, the University of Manitoba remains committed to the health and safety of our community and, as a result, new measures will be introduced over the Fall Term. With thanks to Naomi Andrew, Vice-President (Administration) and her team, today, we are introducing the first step in this process and asking all UM employees and students to immediately upload proof of full vaccination to our secure website<https://covid-declaration.umanitoba.ca/>. Employees and students are required to upload their proof of vaccination whether they intend to be working or learning on or off campus during the term. Individuals have until November 14th to upload proof of full immunization. All individuals who do not submit such proof will be considered unvaccinated. Proof can be a photograph of your Manitoba Health QR code, your vaccination card, or your vaccination record<https://www.gov.mb.ca/covid19/vaccine/immunizationrecord/index.html>. Unless we see a change to public health requirements, you should only need to upload your vaccination proof once during the 2021-2022 academic year. Your vaccination status is being verified under the authority of The University of Manitoba Act and will be used for the purpose of addressing the ongoing health and safety risks posed by COVID-19. We have taken all necessary steps to ensure we protect your privacy. Other than your name, the QR code contains no personal health information or data. We expect to have a procedure established within the next few weeks to support rapid asymptomatic testing of all those accessing a UM campus who have not provided verification of full immunization. Additional restrictions may also apply to these individuals. Details on the UM rapid asymptomatic testing program, and on the process for requesting an exemption from the mandatory vaccination requirement will be coming out very shortly. Owing to its connection to the health care system, an asymptomatic testing protocol will be implemented immediately (September 14) for all individuals accessing the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, including all buildings on the Bannatyne campus and the Helen Glass Building on the Fort Garry campus. Individuals will have their vaccination status visually verified at approved access points. Those unable to provide proof of full immunization will receive an on-site rapid test. A rapid testing program will be operational soon for the Fort Garry Campus and other satellite campuses with details announced once the approach is finalized. The leaves on campus are just beginning to turn their autumn colours, and more people have returned to enjoy it. Though I see more masks than smiles these days, I am still encouraged by the increase of students on-campus and I know that cautious is the right approach as we resume more in-person activity. I feel the mix of hope and hesitancy as we wait to see what this fourth wave will bring. The delta variant is of great concern and we are asking everyone to exercise caution and to be flexible regarding our phased-in return. We are led by science and safety, and not by targets or our best-laid plans. And the science is telling us that, even as we look at the delta variant and growing case numbers, we continue to see remarkable evidence of the effectiveness of vaccines. That is why UM is requiring all employees and students to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before returning to campus. The COVID-19 Recovery Steering Committee (CRSC) has been diligently working to consider input from across UM and develop the most effective and efficient tools to support this vaccine mandate and the health and safety of our community. I know how important it is to our community that we get this right; we need meaningful enforcement and processes that work for our institution's unique needs. The President's Executive Team has carefully reviewed the CRSC's recommendations, and we have asked the steering committee to communicate operational details as they are confirmed and ready to roll out. Please watch for an important update later today regarding proof of vaccination and testing. Individuals over age 12 are required to have their first dose by September 22, 2021 and their second dose by the end of October 2021. The University is holding vaccine clinics on campus<https://news.umanitoba.ca/um-vaccination-clinic-book-your-appointment-now/>, but you can also book a vaccine appointment directly through Shared Health<https://protectmb.ca/> or with the University Health Service<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/health-wellness/university-health-ser…> on the Fort Garry campus. When you come to campus, you'll need to wear a 3-ply mask and maintain physical distancing. We were pleased to learn last week that international students are now eligible to receive a Manitoba immunization card. Navigating the University During the Fall Term most programs, services and supports will continue to be delivered remotely. Update on vaccination requirement: UM will require vaccines for everyone on campus

To our UM community, As we look forward to the start of Fall Term and our phased return to in-person activity, the safety of our campus community is top of mind. Having begun my role as president in the midst of the pandemic, I am eager to see our community thriving on campus. I also want to ensure that our campuses are as safe as possible, and that our community feels safe as we begin to teach, research, train, work and celebrate in person once again. That is why today we are announcing: The University of Manitoba will require faculty, staff, students and campus visitors to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Individuals aged 12 and over are required to have their first dose by September 22, 2021 and their second dose by the end of October 2021. This vaccine protocol is in place for the balance of the 2021-22 academic year, with more details to come. This recommendation was made by the COVID Recovery Steering Committee with input from each of the four sub-committees. The President's Executive Team approved the recommendation after consulting with all unions and confirming support from Deans and the Chair of UM's Board of Governors. Additionally, we sought legal advice, met with Public Health, and consulted with our post-secondary partners in Manitoba and across Canada. Many of you have also expressed that requiring vaccines is the best way to support a safe, in-person work and learning environment. I hear you and I thank you for your engagement on this important issue. As I shared in my July update, we need to be mindful that UM operates like a small city. We will be increasing our on-campus activity throughout the fall, and by January, when we bring all students, staff and faculty back, we will be integrating about 40,000 people from across the province and globe. When we consider the activity that takes place on our campuses (labs, theatre, musical performances, patient care, athletics, contact sports, large classes, research etc.) it is clear that requiring everyone to be vaccinated will ensure the safest possible environment. Vaccines are safe<https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/2019-novel-coronav…> and significantly reduce the risks of the most serious outcomes of COVID-19. To date, this has been true for the variants-of-concern. Vaccines are accessible throughout<https://www.gov.mb.ca/covid19/vaccine/clinics.html> Manitoba and through University Health Services<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/health-wellness/university-health-ser…>. Pop-up clinics are being planned for the fall as well. The University will accommodate individuals who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons and will work with individuals who request accommodation on other grounds. We know you have questions, including about the accommodations mentioned above, but we don't have all the answers yet. Operationalizing this vaccine protocol will require additional consultation and planning. We will continue to engage with our community and provide updates as we develop the details of this plan. At this time, we are asking everyone to ensure they are fully vaccinated against COVID as soon as possible, and we continue to require those on campus to wear a mask and maintain social distancing. I am incredibly proud of and thankful for our university community. Together, we have supported the mission and vision of Manitoba's research university through constant change and adaptation. My sincerest hope is for a safe and successful return to campus this fall, with a full return by January. New Outlook authentication window coming tomorrow When you open Outlook on your computer tomorrow morning, you may see an Office 365 window asking you to enter your UM email address (john.smith(a)umanitoba.ca or UMnetID(a)umanitoba.ca) and password. The new window is a part of Microsoft’s Modern Authentication. Modern Authentication is a new, more secure way to log in to our systems. This change will apply to you if you are using one of the following applications: Outlook 2016 for Windows and later Outlook 2016 for Mac and later You will not see this change if you are using an older version of Outlook or another email client. After tomorrow’s update, you will be asked to log in again every 90 days. What does the new authentication window look like? The new authentication window looks very similar to the Microsoft 365 online login screen. You will be asked to enter your UM email address and password and click the ‘Sign in’ button. Experiment "Can you tell what the person is like just by how they talk?"

The procedure is very simple! You will listen to 9 short audio recordings and will answer several questions about each of them. You will also be asked to answer several demographic questions about yourself. Building on our UM Strategic Plan: A message from President Michael Benarroch and Provost Janice Ristock Usually, the arrival of a new president and vice-chancellor signals the start of extensive strategic plan consultations with faculty, staff, students, and the broader community. While nothing is "usual" these days, circumstances over the past year have allowed us to spend significant time listening to our UM community. After a difficult year that also included many hard-won successes-thanks to the incredible work by our faculty, staff, students and administrators to fulfill the academic mission of our University-we are excited to begin a community consultation process for building on our existing UM strategic plan. A full renewal of the strategic plan will be launched in 2022, under the leadership of incoming Provost and Vice-President (Academic), Dr. Diane-Hiebert-Murphy. For now, while respecting the fundamentals in Taking Our Place 2015-2020<https://umanitoba.ca/sites/default/files/2020-06/um-strategic-plan-2015-202…>, our existing strategic plan, we want to provide some specific short-term guidance and are launching an engagement process to seek your input. In imagining the path we set forward for ourselves, we remain committed to academic and research excellence, an accessible, inclusive and supportive environment on our campuses, and engagement and Reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and communities. We also continue in our commitment to consulting our entire UM community for strategic direction. The University's mission, vision, values and the five strategic pillars within the current Strategic Plan also will continue to guide us. This message is sent on behalf of Christine Cyr, Associate Vice-President (Indigenous), Students, Community, and Cultural Integration & Laurie Schnarr, Vice-Provost (Students). ________________________________ Hello students, It's been one week since we learned about the 215 little ones who didn't go home, and it has been a very hard week. We are grieving with you, and we are holding our communities close in our prayers. We are especially praying for the Survivors and the families of the little ones who did not come home. We know that many of you are sad, angry, and shocked. Please know that we are holding space for you in many different ways. We are having Sharing Circles. Instructors have been opening up class time for talking about what we found out. We have a large community of staff and faculty who are here for you. We have been checking in on many people in our community with phone calls, emails, and text messages too, and we know that you have been doing the same. That's what we do - we take care of each other. Please keep checking on each other. Our Elders have been leading ceremonies this week and are available for one-on-one phone calls if you just need someone to talk to. They are so strong and have been teaching us how to get through this with their kind words and courageous stories. We are so grateful for them, and in saying that, we ask you to keep checking on the Elders in your circle - they are doing a lot of the heavy lifting right now. When we can gather in person, we will. Announcement from President Michael Benarroch: Provost and Vice-President (Academic)

Good morning, I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Diane Hiebert-Murphy as the University of Manitoba's next Provost and Vice-President (Academic). Dr. Hiebert-Murphy [BSW/82; MA/87; PhD/95] will assume her new portfolio on July 1, 2021. She currently serves the University as Vice-Provost (Academic Affairs), a position she has held since 2016. An accomplished researcher, clinician, mentor and administrator, Dr. Hiebert-Murphy is an experienced consensus builder who leads and empowers others with her trusted and confident voice. As Provost and Vice-President (Academic), she will become the senior academic officer at the University of Manitoba, responsible for providing academic vision and leadership in all matters relating to students and academic staff, including academic programs, long-range academic planning, and enrolment management. As the chair of the President's Task Force on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Dr. Hiebert-Murphy will also continue to help advance equity, diversity and inclusion at UM. She is also co-chair of the Sexual Violence Steering Committee, and so has been integral in drafting initiatives and policies to address sexual violence. Dr. Hiebert-Murphy will also help UM in its process of decolonization and Indigenization, work that is deeply important to every member of the University's leadership. As a Professor in the Faculty of Social Work and the Faculty of Arts' Psychological Service Centre, Dr. Hiebert-Murphy is trained to look at how she can improve the interests of the whole community. And in 2019, she was honoured in a Star Blanket ceremony, which recognizes a person who humbly dedicates herself to the service of others. Dr. Hiebert-Murphy is a passionate and dedicated educator and researcher who has advised more than 60 graduate students, has participated on advisory committees for another 60 students, and continues to advise students. She has co-edited three books, published over thirty-five peer-reviewed articles in addition to research reports and book chapters, and has been engaged in dissemination of her work at scholarly meetings, including international conferences. She is also a registered clinical psychologist who continues to engage in clinical practice while sustaining her research program. Dr. Hiebert-Murphy's research and scholarship focuses on intervention with families of young children with disabilities and families impacted by violence. Since 1998 she has received funding for the Couples Project, a service/student training/research program addressing intimate partner violence. Throughout her career at this university, Dr. Hiebert-Murphy has served in increasingly complex leadership roles, including as Associate Director of the Psychological Service Centre; Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Programs in the Faculty of Social Work; Associate Dean in the Faculty of Graduate Studies; and as Vice-Provost (Academic Affairs). During her time as Vice-Provost, she also assumed the position of Acting Dean, Faculty of Social Work. In every role she has shown her passion for building an inclusive community, and her deep commitment to this University's vision of being a university that serves the interests of all Manitobans. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize Dr. Janice Ristock for her exemplary leadership as Provost and Vice-President (Academic). Dr. Ristock's transformative approach to her role is evident in her focus on the scholarship of teaching and learning and the important interrelationship of teaching with research, and in her critical role in the development and implementation of a series of important initiatives that position the University of Manitoba extraordinarily well moving forward. These include her commitment to advancing our goals and priorities associated with Indigenous achievement, such as dedicated support to hire Indigenous scholars and through the establishment of the committee to review the role and mandate for Indigenous senior leadership at the University of Manitoba. They also include her proactive approach to equity, diversity and inclusion as seen for example in her development of a strong and more diverse team of deans; her vision for the development and expansion of experiential learning opportunities; and in her commitment to enhanced support for students, ranging from enhanced scholarship and bursary programs to student mental health supports. Invitation to Participate in a Research Study: Cross-Canada Release of the Post-Secondary Student Stressors Index (PSSI)

Dear Student, You are invited to participate in a cross-Canada research study to evaluate post-secondary student stress led by Dr. Brooke Linden (Principal Investigator, Queen’s University). The Post-Secondary Student Stressors Index (PSSI) was designed to help post-secondary institutions across Canada better target campus mental health services, with the ultimate goal of improving mental health outcomes for students. To ensure that the PSSI would serve students in the best possible way, students were involved heavily throughout the development and testing of this tool. Now it’s time to use the PSSI at post-secondary institutions across Canada to improve our understanding of the types of stressors students are managing in different parts of the country. We are looking for student volunteers to complete an online survey. The first survey was conducted in October, and the second was conducted in January. If you did not participate in the survey in October or January, you can still participate this month! The survey should take you about 20 mins to complete. The vaccine is being administered to an increasing number of people, socially distanced patios are opening, and a strong sense of optimism is in the air! In this update, I am highlighting a few important upcoming events, reminding you of UM's Fall 2021 plans, and sharing news of supports available to you as you complete your last month of classes. Fall Term 2021 Will Include More In-Person Instruction

To our UM students, faculty and staff, We are a community that thrives on personal connections, and as I noted in my recent messages to the community, this past year has been hard on all of us and we are eager to see the end of it. Today, I am writing with cautious optimism to provide an update on plans for Fall Term 2021. Going forward, we will continue to pursue public health advice on additional opportunities to safely resume in-person activity. In light of current public health advice and expectations on the vaccine rollout, we are planning to resume more in-person instruction this fall. The health and safety of our community remains our first priority, and we believe that a phased transition is prudent. As such, we have set the following limits on in person instruction: * Classes with a maximum registration of 20 students can proceed with in-person instruction, as our spaces permit. * Lab classes will be limited to no more than 25, or to the COVID room-capacity limit, whichever is smaller. * Large classes will continue with remote delivery. Effective immediately, units may plan to allow for an increase in the percentage of employees accessing our campuses up to a maximum of 40 per cent (includes teaching, research and work in support of academic mission). All work that can continue remotely should continue remotely. As the vaccination rollout proceeds and public health orders permit, the UM COVID Recovery Steering Committee will look at reopening other course related and non-instructional activities. We are hopeful to be in a position to declare a full return to face-to-face operations in Winter Term 2022. Our past experience has taught us that we need to remain cautious. The situation can change quickly, but this is what we believe is safe based on what we know right now. We appreciate that there will be questions as we move forward, and we will continue to provide more details and answers in the days and weeks to come. What a year we've had.

Today marks one year since the WHO declared a global pandemic that changed life for our UM community. To our UM student community, A year ago, I was preparing to return to my home province and begin my new role as the University of Manitoba's 12th president and vice-chancellor. I was looking forward to being on our lively campuses again-to meeting with students and seeing you in action. Like all of you, my plans were entirely upended when COVID-19 required us to make drastic and immediate changes to the way we work and socialize. Our University of Manitoba community has lost colleagues, students, friends and family. We have had to grieve, and grieve differently. Our most sacred and meaningful traditions have had to be postponed, abandoned, or entirely reimagined. The flag over Administration Building is at half-mast today in recognition of the National Day of Observance for COVID-19, and to commemorate the people who lost their lives and the significant impacts we have all felt. You have had to study, learn, research, work and make friends differently. You have had to let go of much of what you imagined this year of university would be. I hear you when you say it hasn't been easy. I see your struggles, efforts and contributions. This includes those who joined the fight against COVID-19 during early days<https://news.umanitoba.ca/hundreds-of-um-students-volunteering-to-help-figh…>, and to vaccinate people as we move forward. And those who have volunteered as mentors and supported mental wellness to remind each other that you're not alone. Thousands of students took part in virtual Welcome Day, Career Fairs, and UM's Virtual Community Centre<https://news.umanitoba.ca/3-reasons-you-should-join-the-covid-19-virtual-co…> to support each other and connect. Students continue to push themselves in competitions like Three Minute Thesis<https://news.umanitoba.ca/grad-students-ready-to-shine-in-3mt-heats> and JDC West<https://news.umanitoba.ca/asper-hosts-successful-2021-jdc-west-competition/>. And many of you have participated in academic workshops and counselling groups. In a year like no other, you have shown up and found new ways to thrive. Well done, I know it hasn't been easy. And we must remember that the community has rallied together to support you! Thanks to $3.1M from the Manitoba government's Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative (MSBI) and the generosity of UM alumni and donors, an additional $4 million in bursary support is now available to provide immediate financial assistance to over 5,000 UM students. Our donors are also helping eligible students to acquire needed technology through the COVID-19 UM Student Technology Fund<https://news.umanitoba.ca/technology-now-a-vital-tool-for-pandemic-learning/>. I look forward to welcoming more of our community back to our campuses as it becomes safer to do so. I look forward to joining a crowd of fans to cheer on our Bison athletes, and to enjoying a show from the University of Manitoba Theatre program in the John J. Conklin Theatre. I can hardly wait to stand in front of thousands of proud parents, friends and future alumni at an in-person convocation. And what a gift it will be to hear a live Desautels chamber ensemble sing. Invitation to Participate in a Research Study: Cross-Canada Release of the Post-Secondary Student Stressors Index (PSSI)

Dear Student, You are invited to participate in a cross-Canada research study to evaluate post-secondary student stress led by Dr. Brooke Linden (Principal Investigator, Queen’s University). The Post-Secondary Student Stressors Index (PSSI) was designed to help post-secondary institutions across Canada better target campus mental health services, with the ultimate goal of improving mental health outcomes for students. To ensure that the PSSI would serve students in the best possible way, students were involved heavily throughout the development and testing of this tool. Now it’s time to use the PSSI at post-secondary institutions across Canada to improve our understanding of the types of stressors students are managing in different parts of the country. We are looking for student volunteers to complete an online survey a few times over the course of the 2020-2021 academic year. The first survey was conducted in October. We are now looking for volunteers to complete the survey in January and in March. If you did not participate in the survey in October, you can still participate this month! The survey should take you about 20 mins to complete. It's been an unusual year, and you have handled it with grace and tenacity. As you complete final assignments and enter the final exam period, I encourage you to remain focused on your studies. The holiday break is right around the corner! I'm writing today to provide an important update, to share resources that have been developed to support your academic success, and to wish you well in the last weeks of the Fall Term. Last week, grading accommodations recommended by the UM's Covid-19 Recovery Steering Committee and sub-committees, which include representatives from UMSU and UMGSA, were approved by Senate. These grading accommodations were established in recognition of the potential impact that increased stresses and challenges associated with remote learning may have on academic performance, particularly during this prolonged Code Red period in Winnipeg. What are the grading accommodations for Fall Term 2020 and Winter Term 2021? You may choose to exclude from your UM GPA either: a) up to one (1) grade received in Fall Term, and up to one (1) grade received in Winter Term, or b) up to one (1) grade received in a spanned course which runs through both Fall and Winter terms. Your adjusted GPA resulting from exclusion of one or two grades will be used for all GPA-based performance requirements including program progression, probation, suspension, and requirements to withdraw, and to determine eligibility for UM bursaries and scholarships. The 'excluded' grade will remain on your UM transcript. It will be used for progression and prerequisite regulations that specifically reference minimum letter grade requirements, and will continue to be included in the GPA used for admission to advanced entry, professional, and graduate programs. You have lots of time to make your decision. You will have until the end of Winter Term 2021 to make your exclusion decisions for both Fall Term 2020 and Winter Term 2021. More details concerning the process will be communicated in January. How could these grading accommodations help you? The goal is to provide students with some accommodation for potential negative effects on academic performance arising from the increased stresses and challenges associated with remote learning, which have been exacerbated by the increasingly serious pandemic situation in Winnipeg. You will be able to reduce possible negative impacts of the current situation without compromising UM academic standards or integrity. This approach benefits students equally, including those who must maintain enrolment in a minimum number of credit-hours in order to remain eligible for funding. Get informed about the implications of your choice, before your make your final decision. Choosing to exclude one grade from your UM GPA could have implications for your academic trajectory, particularly if you are considering furthering your studies beyond your current target degree.
