Dear authors and readers, On behalf of editors Antonio Cortijo Ocaña and Ángel Gómez Moreno, I am happy to announce that Volume 5 (2005) of eHumanista has been posted and can be viewed at: http://www.spanport.ucsb.edu/projects/ehumanista/ Volume 5 includes articles by José Manuel Lucía Megías, Teresa Jiménez Calvente, María Luisa Gómez-Ivanov, Rebeca Sanmartín Bastida, Óscar Perea Rodríguez, Adelaida Cortijo Ocaña and Gerardo Fernández San Emeterio as well as several reviews. eHumanista is a peer-reviewed electronic journal providing a forum for original research in Spanish and Portuguese Medieval and Early Modern Literatures and Cultures. The journal not only publishes original articles, but it also serves as a distributor for monographs, scholarly editions of texts and manuscripts, and reviews related to the current state of the field. Our goal is to address the needs of scholars by providing a forum for the dissemination of new discoveries in the field, and also to provide wide-spread and immediate access to manuscripts and edited texts which are currently only viewed in special collections or on microfilm. The unique medium of electronic scholarship allows us to publish studies of varying lengths and in diverse formats, thus we accept submissions in the form of long monographs, interactive graphically-rich editions and manuscripts edited with hyperlinks or enhanced with visual and sound files. Most publications are retrievable in PDF format. Submissions for eHumanista must be submitted in MS Word format and should conform to the MLA bibliographic citation standards. Due to the multi-national nature of this journal, we will accept texts written in Spanish, Portuguese, English, Catalan, Galician or Euskera. Best, Erin M. El recientemente publicado libro de Antonio Pérez-Romero, The Subversive Tradition in Spanish Renaissance Writing, Buknell University Press, Lewisburg 2005, dedica el capítulo quinto a La Celestina, pp. 96-130). Como el título del libro y del capítulo indican (La Celestina and InnerDesire for Equality), se trata de una interpretación social de La Celestina en la tradición de Maravall. La primera parte del capítulo es una revisión de la crítica celestinesca y su atención al tema social en la celestina. La segunda parte es un análisis acto por acto de la obra desde un punto de vista social. Versión teatral de Celestina de Ruano de la Haza en la U Católica de Chile

Manuel da Costa Fontes, The Art of Subversion in Inquisitorial Spain: Rojas and Delicado, PSRL 30, West Lafayette, Indiana: Purdue UP, 2005. xiv + 346pp. Paper: $44.95 Adjunto la nota que el autor me ha enviado: -------------------------------------------- The Art of Subversion in Inquisitorial Spain: Rojas and Delicado Manuel da Costa Fontes Fernando de Rojas's Celestina (1499) is perhaps the second greatest work of Spanish literature, right after Don Quixote, and Francisco Delicado sought to surpass it with La Lozana andaluza (1530), an important precursor of the picaresque novel. Both works were written during the height of the Inquisition, when the only relatively safe way for New Christian writers of Jewish extraction like Rojas and Delicado to express what they felt about the discrimination they suffered and their doubts regarding the faith that had been forced upon their ancestors was to do so in a covert, indirect manner. Some scholars have detected this subversive element in Rojas's and Delicado's corrosive view of the Christian societies in which they lived, but this book goes far beyond such suggestions, showing through abundant textual evidence that these two authors used superficial bawdiness and claims regarding the morality of their respective works as cover to encode attacks against the central dogmas of Christianity: the Annunciation, the Virgin Birth, the Incarnation, and the Holy Trinity. This book, which will generate controversy among Hispanists, will be of interest not only to students and scholars of Spanish literature, but also to those involved in Jewish studies, medieval European history, and cultural studies. Manuel da Costa Fontes is a professor of Spanish and Portuguese at Kent State University. The author and editor of several books, he has published widely on the Portuguese ballad, crypto-Judaism, and medieval and Renaissance Spanish literature. His most recent book is Folklore and Literature: Studies in the Portuguese, Brazilian, Sephardic, and Hispanic Oral Traditions.
