Experiment "Can you tell what the person is like just by how they talk?"

[cid:2f0fc072-9659-4047-98ad-4c495c6f9ffa] Dear colleagues, My name is Iuliia Rezvukhina, and I am a Graduate student in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Manitoba, working under the supervision of Dr. Verónica Loureiro-Rodríguez (v.loureiro-rodriguez(a)umanitoba.ca) I am looking for participants for an online experiment about how people perceive others by just listening to their voices. The procedure is very simple! You will listen to 9 short audio recordings and will answer several questions about each of them. You will also be asked to answer several demographic questions about yourself. Completing the entire experiment will take you from 10 to 15 minutes, and you will have the chance to win one of 10 20$ gift cards for participating in this project. Modern authentication coming to Outlook 2016 and later

Modern Authentication coming to Outlook 2016 and later Microsoft’s Modern Authentication is a new, more secure way to log in to our systems. On July 6 you will be asked to log in to Outlook on your desktop using the new Office 365 authentication window. This change will apply to you if you are using one of the following applications: Outlook 2016 for Windows and later Outlook 2016 for Mac and later You will not see this change if you are using an older version of Outlook or another email client. What does the new authentication window look like? The new authentication window looks very similar to the Microsoft 365 online login screen. You will be asked to enter your UM email address (john.smith(a)umanitoba.ca or UMnetID(a)myumanitoba.ca) and password and click the ‘Sign in’ button. Microsoft’s Modern Authentication system is our next step in implementing multi-factor authentication (MFA) for key university systems. Multi-factor authentication or MFA adds an extra layer of security to your university accounts to protect you, your data and university systems from unauthorized access and phishing attacks.  Verifying your identity using a second factor such as your phone or mobile device prevents others from accessing your accounts, even if they know your password. Greetings, My name is Fran Mulhall and I am a Graduate Student in the Department of Environment and Geography being advised by Dr. Michael Campbell. I would like to invite you to participate in a study I am conducting toward my Master of Environment thesis on the topic: Values and Attitudes Toward Canada Geese and Population Management on the University of Manitoba, Fort Garry Campus. If you have already completed this survey then thank you for your time, you can ignore this reminder. If you haven’t yet taken the survey please consider taking the time to fill it out —all answers will be kept in confidence. In this study, campus users including faculty, staff and students are invited to take part in an online questionnaire that aims to better understand how campus users feel about Canada geese on campus and different population management options. Building on our UM Strategic Plan: A message from President Michael Benarroch and Provost Janice Ristock Usually, the arrival of a new president and vice-chancellor signals the start of extensive strategic plan consultations with faculty, staff, students, and the broader community. While nothing is "usual" these days, circumstances over the past year have allowed us to spend significant time listening to our UM community. After a difficult year that also included many hard-won successes-thanks to the incredible work by our faculty, staff, students and administrators to fulfill the academic mission of our University-we are excited to begin a community consultation process for building on our existing UM strategic plan. A full renewal of the strategic plan will be launched in 2022, under the leadership of incoming Provost and Vice-President (Academic), Dr. Diane-Hiebert-Murphy. For now, while respecting the fundamentals in Taking Our Place 2015-2020<https://umanitoba.ca/sites/default/files/2020-06/um-strategic-plan-2015-202…>, our existing strategic plan, we want to provide some specific short-term guidance and are launching an engagement process to seek your input. In imagining the path we set forward for ourselves, we remain committed to academic and research excellence, an accessible, inclusive and supportive environment on our campuses, and engagement and Reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and communities. We also continue in our commitment to consulting our entire UM community for strategic direction. The University's mission, vision, values and the five strategic pillars within the current Strategic Plan also will continue to guide us. They are: * Inspiring minds through innovative and quality teaching * Driving discovery and insight through excellence in research, scholarly work and other creative activities * Creating pathways to Indigenous achievement * Building community that creates an outstanding learning and working environment * Forging connections to foster high impact community engagement Our success will continue to be supported and built on the success of the Front and Centre<https://frontandcentre.cc.umanitoba.ca/> campaign and enhanced by big, bold ideas to inspire the highest levels of philanthropic support for our academic, research, and engagement mission. Various discussions with the Board of Governors, Senate, Provost's Council and UM Alumni Council have led us to a few focused areas of priority across the pillars to guide the University's progress over the next 18 months. We also want to give all members of the UM community the opportunity to share your own views on those priorities and on our path forward. We want to hear from you. This message is sent on behalf of Christine Cyr, Associate Vice-President (Indigenous), Students, Community, and Cultural Integration & Laurie Schnarr, Vice-Provost (Students). ________________________________ Hello students, It's been one week since we learned about the 215 little ones who didn't go home, and it has been a very hard week. We are grieving with you, and we are holding our communities close in our prayers. We are especially praying for the Survivors and the families of the little ones who did not come home. We know that many of you are sad, angry, and shocked. Please know that we are holding space for you in many different ways. We are having Sharing Circles. Instructors have been opening up class time for talking about what we found out. We have a large community of staff and faculty who are here for you. We have been checking in on many people in our community with phone calls, emails, and text messages too, and we know that you have been doing the same. That's what we do - we take care of each other. Please keep checking on each other. Our Elders have been leading ceremonies this week and are available for one-on-one phone calls if you just need someone to talk to. They are so strong and have been teaching us how to get through this with their kind words and courageous stories. We are so grateful for them, and in saying that, we ask you to keep checking on the Elders in your circle - they are doing a lot of the heavy lifting right now. When we can gather in person, we will. In the meantime, please take care of yourselves while you are taking care of others. Announcement from President Michael Benarroch: Provost and Vice-President (Academic)

Good morning, I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Diane Hiebert-Murphy as the University of Manitoba's next Provost and Vice-President (Academic). Dr. Hiebert-Murphy [BSW/82; MA/87; PhD/95] will assume her new portfolio on July 1, 2021. She currently serves the University as Vice-Provost (Academic Affairs), a position she has held since 2016. An accomplished researcher, clinician, mentor and administrator, Dr. Hiebert-Murphy is an experienced consensus builder who leads and empowers others with her trusted and confident voice. As Provost and Vice-President (Academic), she will become the senior academic officer at the University of Manitoba, responsible for providing academic vision and leadership in all matters relating to students and academic staff, including academic programs, long-range academic planning, and enrolment management. As the chair of the President's Task Force on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Dr. Hiebert-Murphy will also continue to help advance equity, diversity and inclusion at UM. She is also co-chair of the Sexual Violence Steering Committee, and so has been integral in drafting initiatives and policies to address sexual violence. Dr. Hiebert-Murphy will also help UM in its process of decolonization and Indigenization, work that is deeply important to every member of the University's leadership. As a Professor in the Faculty of Social Work and the Faculty of Arts' Psychological Service Centre, Dr. Hiebert-Murphy is trained to look at how she can improve the interests of the whole community. And in 2019, she was honoured in a Star Blanket ceremony, which recognizes a person who humbly dedicates herself to the service of others. Dr. Hiebert-Murphy is a passionate and dedicated educator and researcher who has advised more than 60 graduate students, has participated on advisory committees for another 60 students, and continues to advise students. She has co-edited three books, published over thirty-five peer-reviewed articles in addition to research reports and book chapters, and has been engaged in dissemination of her work at scholarly meetings, including international conferences. She is also a registered clinical psychologist who continues to engage in clinical practice while sustaining her research program. Dr. Hiebert-Murphy's research and scholarship focuses on intervention with families of young children with disabilities and families impacted by violence. Since 1998 she has received funding for the Couples Project, a service/student training/research program addressing intimate partner violence. Throughout her career at this university, Dr. Hiebert-Murphy has served in increasingly complex leadership roles, including as Associate Director of the Psychological Service Centre; Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Programs in the Faculty of Social Work; Associate Dean in the Faculty of Graduate Studies; and as Vice-Provost (Academic Affairs). During her time as Vice-Provost, she also assumed the position of Acting Dean, Faculty of Social Work. In every role she has shown her passion for building an inclusive community, and her deep commitment to this University's vision of being a university that serves the interests of all Manitobans. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize Dr. Janice Ristock for her exemplary leadership as Provost and Vice-President (Academic). Dr. Ristock's transformative approach to her role is evident in her focus on the scholarship of teaching and learning and the important interrelationship of teaching with research, and in her critical role in the development and implementation of a series of important initiatives that position the University of Manitoba extraordinarily well moving forward. These include her commitment to advancing our goals and priorities associated with Indigenous achievement, such as dedicated support to hire Indigenous scholars and through the establishment of the committee to review the role and mandate for Indigenous senior leadership at the University of Manitoba. They also include her proactive approach to equity, diversity and inclusion as seen for example in her development of a strong and more diverse team of deans; her vision for the development and expansion of experiential learning opportunities; and in her commitment to enhanced support for students, ranging from enhanced scholarship and bursary programs to student mental health supports. Good afternoon, At the University of Manitoba, we are committed to communicate and apply knowledge, and to contribute to the health and well-being of the people of Manitoba, Canada and the world. This mission is embedded into everything we do, and inspires us to act in the best interest of our community. With the test positively rate in Manitoba increasing as the COVID-19 pandemic third wave swells, we as a community need to follow public health orders and take all necessary steps to keep ourselves and each other safe. I encourage faculty, staff and students to get vaccinated as soon as you are eligible. Becoming vaccinated not only benefits you, it protects your family, friends, classmates and co-workers. In particular, it helps protect the most vulnerable among us including those who may not be eligible to receive a vaccine.
