Possible Winnipeg Transit Work Stoppage

As you may have seen in the media, there is the potential for a Winnipeg transit work stoppage (no deadline has been set), which could impact those who rely on the service to commute to and from campus. Please note that in the event of a strike, classes and other operations of the University will continue. The University respects the bargaining process between the City of Winnipeg and the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1505. As we await further updates we have begun planning for various contingencies. In the event of a work stoppage, we will be asking students, faculty and staff to find alternative ways to come to campus (such as car pools, Go-Manitoba Ride Share, bikes, etc.). As this situation unfolds over the coming days, we will contact you with more information, including a link to a dedicated website with FAQs. Have a great long-weekend - see you next week! Dear students, I hope you’re enjoying a wonderful summer, whether on campus, at work or at the beach! Whatever you’re doing, have fun and stay safe. Good news! We’ve been working hard with members of our university community, including students, to build a new web experience tailored for you! The first phase launches August 8<x-apple-data-detectors://0> and you’re going to have a vastly more positive online interaction! Among the first pages you’ll see are those designed to help you make the most of campus life, including admissions information, student supports, getting involved and community events. No matter where or how you access our new site, you’ll find it responsive, mobile-friendly and easy to navigate across any device, including desktop, tablet and phone. You’ll also notice our new logo and other visual elements from our new brand that reflect our colourful, vibrant and inclusive UM community. The new site is the result of extensive consultation with our community, including current, new and prospective students. This collaborative effort was critical to getting us here, and I’m thankful to everyone for their participation. Power Outage on The Fort Garry Campus

Please be advised<https://news.umanitoba.ca/power-outage-on-fort-garry-campus-2/> that a power outage is affecting the Administration Building, UMSU University Centre, parts of the Education Building and the Science Complex (Duff Roblin, Machray Hall, Buller, Allen, Parker and MIM buildings). As a result, some student services are affected including the Registrar's Office and all other services housed in UMSU University Centre<http://umanitoba.ca/campus/uc.html>. This outage is also affecting Telephone and Network Services across campus. Physical Plant technicians are working to resolve the issue and expect power to be restored to all buildings by the end of the day. Introducing our new logo - Message from David T. Barnard, President and Vice-Chancellor, University of Manitoba

Dear students, Universities have stories to tell: about who they are, their values, their priorities. At the University of Manitoba, we are all a part of that story, and our visual identity - the look and feel of the materials we produce - provides us with a recognizable vehicle with which to express ourselves and connect with those who care about us and the work we do. That visual identity, like the other components of our collective story, occasionally requires refreshing. Over time, we evolve, we grow, we change. And so do our story and the means of telling that story. Today, the launch of our new brand begins with the introduction of a new logo. Watch it here: https://vimeo.com/umanitoba/logointroduction When we started down this road a year ago, many of you shared your ideas and perspectives. Thank you for this. Our journey has been one of thoughtful dialogue and exchange. A logo has been developed that reflects who we are, acknowledges our past, and also, most importantly, looks forward to our future, to who we can and want to be. In particular, I am pleased that the new logo has been informed by Indigenous perspectives, true to this university's vision statement. In the accompanying video, you will see and hear from some participants who brought their voice to the brand development process. They worked closely together and with others involved in this process challenged this institution to deliver a logo that is authentic, powerful and resonant. In the coming days and weeks, you will see our new logo revealed. My sincere hope is that all of us who are a part of the University of Manitoba community find something in the new visual expression that speaks to our understanding of this transformative institution. Celebrate Pride 2019

Good morning, The University of Manitoba is proud to continue being a supporter of the Pride Winnipeg Festival and Parade, and I invite and encourage all members of the University community, including our alumni and friends, to participate in the events and walk with us in the Pride Parade on Sunday, June 2. The University of Manitoba is committed to creating an outstanding learning and work environment and building a culture of inclusion on our campuses. Many members of the U of M family count themselves as members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community and we are working to ensure that the University of Manitoba is a place where the queer community is welcomed and successful. Message from President Barnard to UM Community on sexual violence

Good afternoon, I have shared many messages with our community reiterating my commitment - and that of the University's leadership team - to supporting a culture of respect, safety and inclusion on our campuses. It is important that we give voice to issues that matter, like sexual violence and harassment. It is even more important that we listen and act upon what we hear. Last spring, discussions began around the drafting of new sexual violence and respectful work and learning environment policies. A number of avenues were made available to our students, alumni, staff and faculty to share input about these key policies and their impacts. Anonymous and confidential feedback systems were put in place last spring; more than 20 stakeholder engagement sessions were held over the summer and fall, and an optional survey<http://umanitoba.ca/student/media/Sexual-Violence-Survey-Summary-2019.pdf> was sent to all students. The feedback gathered<http://umanitoba.ca/student/rwle-sa-policy-review/index.html> has been invaluable and led to updates and improvements to the proposed policies, which are currently in draft stage. The goal is to present these policies to the University's Board of Governors for consideration in June 2019. More than influencing policy development, the thoughtful, personal, and often pointed feedback we received has helped to enrich our educational materials and opportunities. While there is much more to do, and certainly additional resources to come, I am pleased that today I can announce the launch of a sexual violence awareness online course on UM Learn<https://universityofmanitoba.desire2learn.com/d2l/login>, which covers many of the key themes highlighted during last year's stakeholder engagement sessions. Containing foundational information on sexual violence, these five video-based modules are available for all members of our community and I encourage each of you to take the time to watch each one. They cover crucial topics, including consent, policies and procedures, common myths and available resources. I recently completed the course and I ask all of my colleagues - both faculty and staff - as well as all members of the student community, to do the same. It is our collective responsibility to educate ourselves around sexual violence on campus. I would like to thank all of you who took the time to engage in candid conversations, either online, or at a stakeholder session. The questions you raised, issues you identified and solutions you offered will continue to guide us as we move ever forward towards creating a culture of consent, respect, trust and inclusivity.
