As you may know, Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) has planned a protest at the Fort Garry campus, tentatively scheduled for 9 a.m. until 11 p.m. from May 7-9. SJP has communicated that this is a student-led event and only students are invited to attend. UM Security Services is monitoring the situation and continues to be in contact with organizers. As with all events on our campuses, the expectation is that this will remain a safe and respectful environment. Regular university activities will continue as planned, including in-person work. New Task Force will update UM’s Mental Health and Well-being Strategy

Message from Diane Hiebert-Murphy, Provost and Vice-President (Academic) and Naomi Andrew, Vice-President (Administration) [cid:image001.jpg@01DA970F.6BB7EB50] New Task Force will update UM’s Mental Health and Well-being Strategy Dear students, The University of Manitoba is committed to providing a caring, supportive, responsive and safe environment for all members of our campus community. To advance this commitment, we will develop a new institutional mental health and well-being strategy. A Task Force on Mental Health and Well-being has been formed, led by co-chairs Tracey Peter, Vice-Provost (Academic Affairs), Laurie Schnarr, Vice-Provost (Students), and René Ouellette, Associate Vice-President (Human Resources). The task force will investigate the current mental health supports available across each of our campuses, consider promising practices, review data collected from recent surveys and engage in consultations with our campus community to ultimately formulate recommendations for consideration. The task force intends to hold its first meeting in April, and in the coming months will announce the formation of several working groups. Please watch for future communications regarding opportunities to serve on a working group and also how to contribute through the consultation process. The task force aims to present initial findings in the fall of this year, and a final report and recommendations by Summer 2025. Protecting our digital campus is a shared responsibility, and we must all contribute to safeguarding our information and systems. Here are key habits to enhance our cybersecurity posture: 1. Use strong passwords: Create complex passwords on all your accounts, and consider using a password manager to store your passwords securely. 2. Enable Multi-factor authentication (MFA): The university requires everyone to use multi-factor authentication (MFA) to sign in to university services and applications. Be cautious about unexpected prompts, and never share your one-time MFA code with others. Whenever possible, enable MFA on your personal accounts to add an extra layer of security. 3. Be cautious with email: Look for the UM external warning tag. It is a sure indicator that if the message sounds suspicious, it probably is. Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown or suspicious sources, and always verify urgent requests. Phishing attempts are a common entry point for cyber threats. 4. Keep software updated: Regularly update your operating system, applications, and anti-virus software to protect against the latest vulnerabilities. 5. Secure your devices: Use strong passwords, encryption, and screen locks to protect your personal devices. Your awareness and actions can make a significant difference in our collective cybersecurity efforts. Message from Lynette Magnus, Chair, University of Manitoba Board of Governors [cid:image001.jpg@01DA7A07.9519B2A0] I am very pleased to share that the Board of Governors unanimously approved the re-appointment of President and Vice-Chancellor Michael Benarroch to a second five-year term, beginning July 1, 2025. The re-appointment of Dr. Benarroch follows the completion of a comprehensive review by the Board's Presidential Review Committee. The Committee, representing students, staff, faculty, and independent Board members, sought and received widespread feedback from members of the UM and broader communities. The Committee looked ahead at the opportunities and challenges facing the University and heard from President Benarroch on his vision for the University of Manitoba into the future. The Board has full confidence in President Benarroch's ability to lead our university in alignment with its new five-year strategic plan and in support of a university that will lead change for a better Manitoba. President Benarroch has shown exceptional leadership throughout his first term. He successfully guided the University during the pandemic, always focused on ensuring the continuation of student learning, while maintaining safety for all. He has built an outstanding and cohesive leadership team and has placed a renewed focus on research and innovation, enabling greater success of UM faculty, staff, and students. Under his guidance, UM is a leader in advancing Reconciliation and is home to the National Centre of Truth and Reconciliation. The work of the Anti-Racism Task Force and the President's Task Force on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion provides a strong foundation for the University moving forward and fosters belonging, a UM core value. President Benarroch champions the University of Manitoba and its members in the broader community, heightening external engagement and support. Survey participants needed for research on food and nutrition security at the University of Manitoba

Hello, Faculty in the Food and Human Nutritional Sciences Department are conducting a research study to learn more about food and nutrition security among students at the University of Manitoba (UM). We are seeking current UM students with at least part-time status, who are at least 18 years old, and who currently live in Winnipeg to take our survey. You must also be able to read and write English. Your participation in this study will consist of one approximately 20-30 minute survey. Questions may include basic demographic information as well as information regarding household nutrition security, household resilience, food availability and utilization, among other topics. All survey respondents completing the survey between March - May 2024 will be eligible to receive one of 8 $100 Amazon electronic gift cards in appreciation for participating. You may only complete the survey once. If you have previously completed this survey, you will be ineligible to participate. Why not experience research with a professor at your own university! Professors at the University of Manitoba, through their work, are contributing to the cultural, economic, health, and social well-being of citizens of Manitoba, Canada, and the world. By tackling challenging and complex issues and topics, they strive to make our lives better and more meaningful, bringing insight to all. UM Professors collectively draw in nearly $220 million from external sources to the University, on a competitive basis, to support their research, scholarly work, and creative activities, and to nurture young minds to become trailblazers, pioneers, and innovators. About the Undergraduate Research Award The award provides the opportunity for you to be mentored by a professor of your choice for 16 weeks (between May–August 2024) and gain valuable experience in your field of interest. Recipients also receive a $7000 award. Of the many awards available, at least 10% of these awards will be made available to students who self-declare as Canadian Indigenous Students on the application form. Furthermore, there will also be a minimum of two awards made available to students working on community-based research projects that are within disciplines supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). To be considered eligible for this opportunity, applicants must confirm with their University of Manitoba professor that the research is community-based research within disciplines supported by SSHRC and indicate this by checking the appropriate box on the application form. Who is eligible? * Must be an undergraduate student at UM. * Must be enrolled in 24 credit hours at the time of the Voluntary Withdrawal deadline (Fall term 2023 and Winter term 2024) * Minimum GPA of 3.0, based on all credits completed at the time of application. * Cannot be held in conjunction with other competitive summer research awards such as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s Undergraduate Research Summer Award (NSERC USRA) * Students who will be graduating in the Spring of 2024 (May/June convocation) are not eligible for this award. * This award cannot be held more than twice by any recipient during their undergraduate program(s) at UM. * Students who hold a master’s degree are not eligible for this award. What do you need to do? * Interview professors (minimum 1) to find out more about their areas of research, scholarly work, or creative activities, and to explore the potential for a research experience with them via the URA. * Once you have decided on your preferred research supervisor, fill out and submit the online application form (found at https://umanitoba.ca/research/opportunities-support/undergraduate-research-…), following any prompts shown on the screen. * The selected researcher will then receive an email with a separate form that they must fill out to confirm their willingness to take on a student and provide details regarding the potential research experience. * Further instructions and information will be automatically generated for both you and the professor/researcher you listed on your application form, upon submission. President Benarroch has indicated his interest in reappointment, and, pursuant to his agreement with the University, requested that the Board of Governors review his performance as President with a view to reappointment for a further term. In accordance with its governance practices, the Board of Governors has established a Presidential Review Committee. This Committee will review President Benarroch's performance and his vision for a further term, reporting to the Board of Governors with a recommendation on the reappointment of the President by March 19, 2024. The Board of Governors has requested that the Presidential Review Committee solicit informed feedback from members of the University Community, including students, with respect to the President's reappointment. Survey participants needed for research on food and nutrition security at the University of Manitoba

Hello! Faculty in the Food and Human Nutritional Sciences Department are conducting a research study to learn more about food and nutrition security among students at the University of Manitoba (UM). We are seeking current UM students with at least part-time status, who are at least 18 years old, and who currently live in Winnipeg to take our survey. You must also be able to read and write English. Your participation in this study will consist of one approximately 20-30 minute survey. Questions may include basic demographic information as well as information regarding household nutrition security, household resilience, food availability and utilization, among other topics. All survey respondents completing the survey between December 2023 - February 2024 will be eligible to receive one of 8 $100 Amazon electronic gift cards via random drawing in appreciation for participating. You may only complete the survey once. If you have previously completed this survey, you will be ineligible to participate. We would like to assure you that this research has been approved by the Research Ethics Board at the University of Manitoba, Fort Garry campus, and all data will be kept confidential by the research team.
