Survey participants needed for research on food and nutrition security at the University of Manitoba

Hello! Faculty in the Food and Human Nutritional Sciences Department are conducting a research study to learn more about food and nutrition security among students at the University of Manitoba (UM). We are seeking current UM students with at least part-time status, who are at least 18 years old, and who currently live in Winnipeg to take our survey. You must also be able to read and write English. Your participation in this study will consist of one approximately 20-30 minute survey. Questions may include basic demographic information as well as information regarding household nutrition security, household resilience, food availability and utilization, among other topics. All survey respondents completing the survey between September - November 2023 will be eligible to receive one of 8 $100 Amazon electronic gift cards in appreciation for participating. You may only complete the survey once. If you have previously completed this survey, you will be ineligible to participate. We would like to assure you that this research has been approved by the Research Ethics Board at the University of Manitoba, Fort Garry campus, and all data will be kept confidential by the research team. [cid:image001.png@01D9DFE1.1600B100] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor Tansi, I hope you enjoyed our beautiful province these past few months. This summer, it felt as though wherever Kim and I went, we found ourselves surrounded by Bisons! We went to a jazz concert of Joni Mitchell covers and learned lead vocalist, Amber Epp, and some of her band members were UM grads. We fell in love with a piece of art and, as we were purchasing it, learned the artist, Jordan Miller, was a UM alum. Everywhere we went, we felt connected to this community, and we loved it. Our university boasts an amazing array of talent and when we come together, incredible things happen. We've been connecting recently to create important guiding documents, such as the university's new Strategic Plan<https://umanitoba.ca/strategic-plan>, the Strategic Research Plan (coming in 2024), and the new Reconciliation Action Plan. We're not done yet and welcome your big ideas over the coming weeks as these documents continue to take shape. And once again, I'm hosting a Budget Town Hall on September 26 and I hope to see you there and hear your thoughts on this foundational document. Our campuses are full of a diversity of people working together to make our city, province, and world better. There's no other place like UM in the province and I am honoured to advocate on behalf of this community every opportunity I get. After the October provincial election, I will resume meetings with government to continue discussions on a variety of important topics that can help make our province better, like the value of research, investing in post-secondary education and respecting institutional autonomy, health care education, and Reconciliation. I am also looking forward to boasting about our community's exceptional work to the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce on October 20, highlighting the unique connections we have to our province's health and prosperity. There are events for everyone-from the Distinguished Alumni Awards, the classic Bisons Homecoming football game, family-friendly tailgate parties, and a fantastic concert. And of course, this term the Bisons return to the pitches, fields, courts, pools, and arenas. We continue to be inspired by and grateful for your thoughtful feedback. [cid:image001.png@01D9AB41.62C08B70] Notification of controlled detonation on Fort Garry campus Out of an abundance of caution, City of Winnipeg Emergency Services have decided to proceed with a controlled detonation to address the presence of a potentially unstable chemical found in Parker Building this morning. The controlled detonation will take place after 4:00 PM at an outdoor location, secured by Emergency Services and university personnel. There will be no impact on air quality. It is difficult to predict how loud this event will be for those on campus, but it is expected to sound similar to a loud firework. A safe perimeter has been established, and everyone is asked to respect the boundaries in place. If you are experiencing unease as a result of today's events, please speak with your supervisor about working remotely for the remainder of the day. Supervisors are encouraged to be flexible and support remote work in light of these events. Regular use of Parker and other affected buildings will resume following cleanup, which is expected to be complete later this afternoon. The disposal is being carried out in the safest possible manner in partnership with Emergency Services. The university will review all chemical storage protocols following this discovery and ensure we have every necessary practice in place to support the safe storage of all substances.

Emergency Services have been notified to assess the situation and are being deployed to campus. Parker and connected buildings are being evacuated to allow Emergency Services including Fire, Police, Ambulance and Hazardous Materials to attend and assess the situation and to determine the safest method of removing the chemical. The evacuation is a precautionary measure taken to safeguard the health and safety of our faculty, staff, and students. Once the substance is removed, it will be safe to resume use of Parker and connected buildings. We understand the concerns and anxieties that may arise from the evacuation and presence of emergency responders. Please be assured that our utmost priority is maintaining a safe and secure environment for all members of the University of Manitoba community. Search for a Vice-President (Indigenous): A message from President Michael Benarroch

[cid:image001.png@01D97F45.2E4AB820] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Catherine Cook has served the University of Manitoba as its inaugural Vice-President (Indigenous) since January 1, 2020 and in 2022, agreed to a one-year extension of her term. At that time, she signaled her intention to step down from this role and retire from the University at the conclusion of her term extension. Dr. Cook will conclude her time as Vice-President (Indigenous) later in 2023, in conjunction with the end of the search for the next Vice-President (Indigenous). Dr. Cook's contributions as Vice-President (Indigenous) have been exceptional and far-reaching. She conceptualized a portfolio that offers both strategic leadership of and support to the University's overall Indigenous engagement and achievement, Reconciliation and anti-racism efforts, including to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. She successfully led a university-wide process to implement the recommendations of the Indigenous Senior Leadership Report, directly engaging over 60 members of the university community through six project teams to implement 31 priorities or commitments. Further, under her leadership, UM successfully advocated for an $85M federal investment in a permanent home for the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation; developed a Reconciliation Action Plan for the University; secured a $16.1M gift from the Mastercard Foundation for EleV programs that support Indigenous student success in a range of innovative ways, designed in partnership with Indigenous communities, governments and organizations; pursued a consultative approach to assessing how UM supports the declaration of Indigenous identity; and co-chaired the Anti-Racism Task Force. These accomplishments are among Dr. Cook's many significant contributions as Vice-President (Indigenous) and do not include her many notable contributions in her earlier roles as Vice-Dean (Indigenous) in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, and as associate professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences. Taken together, Dr. Cook's contributions are generational in impact, and have been pivotal in pursuing the University of Manitoba's commitment to advance Reconciliation at all levels - in governance, leadership, and practice, and to be national leaders in this journey. With the end of Dr. Cook's term nearing, the process to search for a new Vice-President (Indigenous) has begun. Mario Pinto, Vice-President (Research and International) And Dr. Annemieke Farenhorst, Associate Vice-President (Research) Dear University of Manitoba Community, We invite you to attend the next Community Engagement Session as we continue our Strategic Research Planning process to develop a collective vision for the future of UM research. Based on your feedback, the Strategic Research Planning Committee has identified five thematic areas: * Climate Action and Sustainability * Food and Water Security * Health and Well-Being * Human Security and Equity * Indigenous Research In the fourth community engagement session, we will ask participants to discuss research impact, including how it should be measured beyond citation impact. For example, see NSERC's Forms of Contributions to Research<https://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/NSERC-CRSNG/Policies-Politiques/assessment_of…>, which have been informed by the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA<https://sfdora.org/>). This session will allow for both in-person and virtual interactive small group discussions to address key questions. Mask use encouraged, not required, for Summer Term 2023: A message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor

[cid:image001.png@01D97690.440E5B20] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor Dear UM community, The University of Manitoba's mandatory masking protocol will end when Summer Term begins on May 1. From that date forward, masking will be strongly encouraged, and UM will continue to supply masks as the university still recommends people use them, especially in indoor spaces that do not allow for distancing. This change will align UM with current public health practices across the province. As we remove the masking mandate, individuals' risk assessments will vary and I ask everyone in this community to respect the decisions of others<https://umanitoba.ca/about-um/respectful-work-and-learning-environment-poli….>. Throughout the pandemic, UM has been very mindful of the most vulnerable among us who carried (and continue to carry) more burden than the majority had to. This is why we are one of the last institutions in Canada to lift its mask mandate. This mandate helped keep our community safe while vaccines were rolled out, and while hospitals were under the greatest strain. UM has also been assessing our HVAC systems and making improvements to support optimal air quality. Thank you to everyone who has consistently prioritized public health by wearing a mask. I recognize it may not always be comfortable or convenient to do so, but I sincerely appreciate how committed this community is to keeping each other safe. I'd like to also extend my gratitude to Security Services for taking on the additional duty of providing masks and helping support the mask mandate over the past three years. UM Community Update on Indigenous Identity: April 25

CATHERINE COOK, VICE-PRESIDENT (INDIGENOUS) Dear University of Manitoba Community, Indigenous identity is complex due to centuries of colonialism and racism. UM has followed a practice of honouring Indigenous self-declaration because it allows for an Indigenous-led process that may accept government-stated guidelines and is flexible to include Métis, First Nation, non-status or Inuit-specific ways of acknowledging our community members. However, as universities and other institutions continue to be challenged by cases of Indigenous identity fraud, we've recognized the need to review how we support the declaration of Indigenous identity. Over the past year, the University hosted a series of Indigenous-led engagement sessions<https://umanitoba.ca/indigenous/supporting-indigenous-consultation-working-…> to determine how UM can support the declaration of Indigenous identity and prevent cases of Indigenous identity fraud. On Tuesday, April 25, we will provide an update on the engagement process, including nine recommendations that will inform the development of an Indigenous identity policy for UM. Last month, a UM delegation<https://news.umanitoba.ca/um-delegation-to-attend-un-2023-water-conference-…> attended the UN 2023 Water Conference in New York, where water experts from around the world gathered with the common goal of building strong partnerships to address water challenges and achieve global sustainability targets. Our inter-disciplinary delegation of UM researchers was joined by two citizens from Carcross/Tagish First Nation and played a vital role in setting the agenda for global water governance and sustainability. At the end of March, I was also thrilled to read about the important work being undertaken by a group of UM Engineering students<https://news.umanitoba.ca/um-cubesat-ready-for-lift-off/> whose UM Cube Satellite was selected by the Canadian Space Agency to travel to the International Space Station in June. The satellite will reach the space station later this summer and collect important information about how space conditions affect the composition of asteroids and the Moon. Well done! This season the UM Bisons<https://gobisons.ca/> excelled on the field, court, track, ice, and in the water - wherever the competition took them. Teams, athletes and coaches were celebrated at the annual Brown and Gold Awards<https://gobisons.ca/sports/2021/4/14/brown-and-gold-awards.aspx> on April 1, and many were also recognized with conference and national-level awards. Congratulations to all - we are proud to be Bisons and look forward to cheering you on again in 23-24! On March 30, twelve graduate students shared highlights of their innovative research through the Three Minute Thesis<https://umanitoba.ca/graduate-studies/student-experience/three-minute-thesi…> (3MT) competition, covering topics from sustainable farming methods to using virtual reality and artificial intelligence to treat dementia.
