Sent on behalf of the Dismantling Ableism and Promoting Equity for Persons with Disabilities Research Team:
Greetings University of Manitoba Students,
We are pleased to invite you to participate in the Dismantling Ableism: Institutional Action and Accountability online survey. We know that ableist barriers continue to exist at UM and have heard from previous surveys that it is time for action. The purpose of this survey is to ask disabled UM students, staff, and faculty and those managing chronic health conditions, including mental health conditions, what needs to change and how it needs to change to inform that action. The data from this survey will be used to create a series of anti-ableism recommendations and to inform the development of an anti-ableism policy for the University of Manitoba.
This survey is one part of the Dismantling Ableism: Institutional Action and Accountability project. The project is designed to answer the following questions: What is equity when disabled persons and anti-ableism are centered? And what are the complex ways in which ableism operates across the University of Manitoba community and larger research ecosystem?
The project is managed by Cade Kuehl (Project Coordinator and Research Assistant); and anchored by Dr. Diane Driedger (Disability Studies), and Dr. Reg Urbanowski (Rehabilitation Sciences) with Dr. Tina Chen (Vice Provost, Equity) serving as the administrative Principal Investigator. The study is funded by the Canada Research Chairs Program’s Robbins Ollivier Award for Excellence in Equity.
Your Participation
The time it will take to complete this survey will be different for each person. We ask short questions that require you to click one or more response options; and we also ask open-ended questions where you can write as much as you would like (and whatever you would like). If you choose to fill in the optional open-ended text boxes, it may take longer to finish the questionnaire.
You may exit the survey simply by closing the browser window. If you close your browser window and have not completed the survey, you may return to finish the survey up to two weeks later, as long as you use the same computer and Internet browser.
Confidentiality
This survey is confidential. At the end of the survey, we will give you the opportunity to provide your email address to receive a copy of the summary results report. If you choose to provide your email address for this purpose, it will be collected separately from your survey responses to ensure there is no link between your email and your answers.
To ensure confidentiality, no potentially identifying information you provide will be reported. Your responses will not be shared with others, unless in report/aggregate format (with all the protections of confidentiality as required by the University of Manitoba Research Ethics Board). For example, there would need to be at least 5 other participants with the same characteristic(s) before we would report any information to guard against you being identified. Depending on the combination of characteristics, this minimum number may also be raised to further protect against indirect identification.
Any quotes taken from your written answers to the open-ended questions will be assigned a pseudonym or generally attributed to guard against identification (e.g., Faculty of Arts student or Bannatyne staff member). Similarly, any indirectly identifying details included in open-ended responses will also be omitted or assigned a pseudonym (e.g., names of employers, co-workers, friends, or family, etc.).
Your survey responses will only be used in the context of project reports; university and conference presentations; and/or scholarly publications, including dissertations and theses of student research assistants.
Questions and Contact Information
If you have any questions about this survey, please contact Dr. Jennifer Dengate (Director of EDI Research & Projects) at Jennifer.Dengate(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:Jennifer.Dengate@umanitoba.ca>. This research has been approved by the Research Ethics Board at the University of Manitoba, Fort Garry campus (certificate #HE2023-0244).
If you have any questions about the Dismantling Ableism: Institutional Action and Accountability project, please contact Project Coordinator Cade Kuehl at Cade.Kuehl(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:Cade.Kuehl@umanitoba.ca> or Principal Investigator, Distinguished Professor and Vice Provost (Equity), Tina Chen at Tina.Chen(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:Tina.Chen@umanitoba.ca>. If you have any concerns about the way this study is conducted, please contact the University of Manitoba Research Ethics Officer at 1-204-474-7122 (or humanethics(a)umanitoba.ca).
We believe this survey is an important step towards achieving a comprehensive understanding of the diversity of experiences across the disabled community at UM and the actions required to dismantle ongoing ableist barriers. Your honest assessments will help us develop a series of anti-ableism recommendations and to inform the development of an anti-ableism policy for the University of Manitoba.
Thank-you in advance for participating, or for your consideration to participate!
Sincerely,
Cade Kuehl, Jennifer Dengate, and Tina Chen

Dear UM students,
Many of you lead busy lives, trying to balance coursework, extracurricular activities, and part-time jobs. We also recognize that some of you may have responsibilities as parents or guardians, which can sometimes pose its own unique set of challenges. We know that this rings especially true when there are classes or campus events to attend, and occasional childcare is not available. As we continue to work towards a thriving University community, I am delighted to announce the creation of a digital babysitter directory, a joint venture between UM Family Resources and the Family Centre (Rady Faculty of Health Sciences), available to you starting Wednesday, November 01.
The UM Babysitter Directory is a digital platform designed exclusively with the University community in mind and its goal is to connect parents seeking babysitting services with fellow students seeking casual employment. The directory will consist of babysitter profiles and contain information such as relevant training, certifications, previous work experience, preferred locations, and more. This initiative aims to create a sense of belonging and inclusion by reducing barriers to reaching higher education.
If you are interested in using the directory, please visit the Family resources<https://umanitoba.ca/faculty-and-staff/family-resources> webpage and click on ‘Request access to the UM Babysitter Directory’. The directory's Disclaimer Form can only be opened by signing in with your student email address. Each statement on the form must be read and acknowledged in order to request access. Once the form has been submitted, you will receive a link to a private Microsoft Team channel. Please allow 3-5 business days for your request to be processed.
If you have any questions about the directory, please feel free to contact me at FamilyResource(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:FamilyResource@umanitoba.ca> (Fort Garry campus) or Melissa at FamilyCentre(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:FamilyCentre@umanitoba.ca> (RFHS, Bannatyne campus) for more information.
We hope the directory will be well used and foster a supportive learning environment by serving as a resource for the UM student parent population.
Warm regards,
Francene Perehinec

Dear students,
I know how difficult this past couple of weeks has been for you, the UM community, and the communities beyond our campuses as we witness the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. My primary concern is that you are finding ways to receive the care and support<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/student-health-and-wellness> you need.
At the University of Manitoba, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and safe environment for all members of our community where discrimination, harassment, and prejudice against individuals or groups based on their nationality, ethnicity, or religion will not be tolerated.
With respect to the comments released by the university on October 13<https://news.umanitoba.ca/reminder-to-recognize-our-common-humanity-in-the-…>, the intention was two-fold: to condemn the terrorist attack by Hamas and to support Jewish members of our community who were concerned for their safety following calls by Hamas for additional terror attacks; and to acknowledge that all Palestinian people are not represented by Hamas and are suffering because of the ongoing conflict.
As a university, we condemn terrorism and any form of threat, intimidation or aggression against any members of our community, while also protecting the rights of those in a free and democratic society to peacefully gather and express themselves.
Please know the safety of our campus community continues to be a top priority for the university and for the security<https://www.umanitoba.ca/security/> and risk team which, upon hearing news of the attack by Hamas, immediately implemented a comprehensive security plan with the intent of keeping people safe. We have been in ongoing communication with student leaders not only to share information, but to make sure they are aware of the services and supports we have available.
Anyone who is experiencing discrimination, prejudice, or disrespectful behaviours in breach of the university's Respectful Work and Learning Environment Policy<https://umanitoba.ca/about-um/respectful-work-and-learning-environment-poli…> should not hesitate to reach out to our Office of Human Rights and Conflict Management<https://umanitoba.ca/human-rights-and-conflict-management/>. We are here to support you and ensure that our university remains a place of respect, inclusivity, and understanding.
The University of Manitoba is a place for learning, collaboration, and growth. As an academic institution, we believe in the power of education, discussion, and understanding. We encourage respectful conversations and the sharing of diverse perspectives. Most importantly, we encourage everyone to remember our common humanity and approach these discussions with empathy, patience, and respect for one another.
Warmly,
Laurie
