University of Manitoba Mask Mandate

We made this decision after consulting with public health experts and our UM community. We have heard from many of you, and we recognize that there is a diverse range of perspectives on the current need for masks. At this time, many in our community continue to ask that UM maintain its mask policy to support a safe in-person environment. Though we know a mask mandate can't continue indefinitely, we also know that COVID and other respiratory infection cases are high and putting significant strain on our health care system. Masks are among the most effective public health tools to reduce transmission, and use is far greater when supported by a mandate. We will look at easing the mask mandate when it is safer to do so. Going into Winter Term, a mask mandate is the best way to protect our community right now. As exam time approaches, more students are studying on campus, and daylight saving time is bringing darkness at an earlier hour, we want to remind everyone to stay alert. This is a return to Canada for me, having previously served as Griffith University's Deputy Vice Chancellor Research and Director, Gold Coast Health & Knowledge Precinct in Australia. I invite you to join me on THURSDAY, DECEMBER 1 at 9:00AM in the Multi-Purpose Room, 2nd Floor, UMSU University Centre when I will share my vision to increase research impact at the global scale through cross-disciplinary collaboration and a plurality of perspectives. UM condemns the tragic death of Mahsa Amini

Since this complex situation began to unfold in Iran, we have heard from many of you about how this is impacting you personally and academically. We have responded directly to student comments and concerns including sharing available resources and supports. The Provost's Office has also asked all Deans to ensure Instructors and Sessionals who are supervising or teaching a student impacted by the current situation in Iran exercise compassion during this challenging time. President and Vice-Chancellor Michael Benarroch and Mike Emslie, UM's Chief Financial Officer and Comptroller, provided a detailed presentation to ensure transparency and engage on these important topics. As UM is preparing its 2023-24 operating budget, we would like to invite additional community input through this budget survey. You will have the opportunity to provide your perspective on budget priorities and share feedback. All survey responses are completely confidential and cannot be traced to individual respondents. [cid:image001.png@01D8CD96.EBBA1920] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor Good morning, September 28 is my first President's Town Hall focused on UM's budget process and financial health, and I welcome all interested faculty, staff and students to join us in-person or online. As I said in my Fall Term welcome message<https://news.umanitoba.ca/welcome-to-fall-term-2022/>, I value every opportunity to connect with this community and I see this town hall as a meaningful way to demonstrate transparency and engage on these important topics. Mike Emslie, UM's Chief Financial Officer and Comptroller, and I will provide a detailed presentation and answer any questions you may have about the budget. Following the town hall, we will also be sending out a budget survey to garner additional community input. I began hosting budget town halls while I was provost at what is now Toronto Metropolitan University, and I sincerely look forward to holding my first such event as UM President now that we are back on campus in full capacity.
