Voluntary Withdrawal Deadline and Summer Session Registration

To all U of Manitoba students... Please note that all students were erroneously sent an email around 2:30 p.m. today, Monday March 11th, titled "Re: VW notice". We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion. Read below for information about the upcoming Winter Term VW deadline, and Summer Session Registration (which begins next week!). Winter Term 2013 Voluntary Withdrawal Deadline Reminder: The Voluntary Withdrawal Deadline for Winter Term Courses is Wednesday, March 20, 2012. The deadline for Voluntary Withdrawal from Fall/Winter Term and Winter Term courses taught during the standard term is Wednesday, March 20. Courses taught outside the standard term will have different VW deadlines - check with your faculty about these. VW's must be done through Aurora Student and can be done up to 11:59 PM. Are you On Hold? See further below for more information! Think before you drop... You may decide to VW from a class for a variety of reasons. Common situations include: * The course subject matter was not the same as originally expected; * Your overall course load is too demanding - withdrawing from one class will leave more time for others; * Your program focus has changed and the course is no longer required; * Your mid-term grades were not satisfactory - and you think withdrawing is better than receiving a low or failed grade. Before you decide to VW from a class, be sure to: * Talk with your course instructor about your concerns and if there are strategies for improvement before the end of term; * Talk to an academic advisor about your course load, study strategies, and options for possibly repeating the course later; * Be aware of course load requirements and implications of VW - if you have a government student loan, are a sponsored student, a Bison athlete or are in any other type of situation that requires a minimum course load; * Refer to the U1 Start Book or the UM Calendar to make sure you know where that course fits into your intended or current program; * Check to see if the course is required as a prerequisite for upper-level courses within your program; * Look at the Winter Term schedule to see if the course is offered again this year. Please contact an academic advisor to discuss your concerns and options. Note: If you are On Hold for outstanding tuition, library books, parking fines, etc. you will not be able to access the Registration function in Aurora to VW a course. If you are On Hold and plan to VW, you must either first clear your Hold so that you can access the Registration functions in Aurora, or you must contact your academic advising office for assistance in dropping the course. New: As part of the University of Manitoba's commitment to providing an excellent learning experience for students, we would like to know why you have chosen not to complete a course or courses. Students who choose to VW will be asked to complete a brief confidential survey on the reason(s) for withdrawal. The information gathered will help us to determine if there is information or resources that may have helped you complete your courses successfully. Registration for Summer Session 2013 Are you planning to take courses in Summer Session? Join the thousands of students who take advantage of Summer Session to lighten their load in fall & winter, finish their degree faster, enjoy smaller classes, or catch up on missed or failed courses. More information about Summer Session can be found at www.umanitoba.ca/summer<http://www.umanitoba.ca/summer>. Here are some things to know if you are planning to register for Summer Session: * Registration begins in one week, on March 18, 2013. You will be assigned one day during the first week in which you can register. The Registration Schedule<http://www.umanitoba.ca/extended/summer/calendar/registration/reg_sched.sht…> indicates registration dates and times. Find your registration time on Aurora Student. Log in and select Enrolment & Academic Records. Select Registration and then Registration Time & Status. While on this page you should be sure to check if: o You have any Holds that will prevent registration (including Advisor Holds for students in specific programs); o Your academic status prevents registration (e.g. academic suspension); o Your record is not currently active due to an absence from university. * For the first 5 days of registration (March 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22), spaces in most courses are released each day in equal numbers to ensure fair access for all students. For example, if a course has 50 spaces available, 10 spaces will be released each day. During these first 5 days of registration, the only day you may register is determined by the last two digits of your Student Number. You may register between 9:00 am and 11:59 p.m. on your day of registration. * If you are planning to Repeat a course(s) you have previously completed, you must obtain permission from your faculty (University 1) advising office prior to registration. Your advisor can also check to ensure that a course Repeat is to your benefit depending on your academic goals. Do this in advance of your registration day to ensure that your registration is not delayed and you don't miss out on space. * If you are expecting to graduate in Spring 2013, you must re-apply for admission if you plan to continue taking courses in Summer Session. * Remember that you are financially and academically responsible for all courses in which you are registered after the Revision deadline. This Revision period is very short in Summer Session, so make sure you drop a course you will not be taking before it begins - or at the latest before the applicable Revision deadline. Failure to pay for your courses will not result in a de-registration of courses. Students who fail to pay for courses will be placed on Hold<http://umanitoba.ca/student/records/registration/steps/652.htm> and will be unable to register for the following term until the Hold is cleared. Failure to withdraw through normal procedures will result in a grade being assigned to all courses in which you are registered in at the end of term and you will be liable for all associated fees. Machray Hall Incident Update

An individual was arrested by the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) today in Armes Building for having uttered threats in a Machray Hall office area. The arrest took place without incident and WPS has made it clear that at no time was the university community in danger. The accused was released on conditions that she not attend any University of Manitoba properties. The university is unable to provide further information as this is now a WPS matter. Telephone System Outage for Monday, January 14

National Philanthropy Day

Dear faculty, staff and students at the University of Manitoba, Today, November 15, we celebrate National Philanthropy Day (NPD) across the country. This annual event began in the United States in 1986 as special day to honour the impact of people who give generously to support causes that are important to them or volunteer their time to make a difference in their community. Earlier this month, thegovernment of Canada passed a new bill to permanently establish November 15 as National Philanthropy Day in our country. At the University of Manitoba, we are thankful to our faculty, staff and students for their contributions. In countless ways, your generosity has made a positive impact on our university, our community and our world. All over the world, celebrations are being held to honour philanthropists and volunteers who make a difference in their communities. The Association of Fundraising Professionals, Manitoba Chapter will be recognizing a number of people who are committed to improving life in our province. Among them are two of our graduates: John Prystanski (BA/88, JD/12) is being honoured for his work as an Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser and Mark Evans (BCSc [Hons]/84), MSc/86, PhD/88) is being honoured for his work as an Outstanding Philanthropist. These are just two members of the University of Manitoba community who volunteer their time and their talents to make our neighbourhoods and workplaces better places to live and to work. Bannatyne Security Services: temporarily located in S108 Medical Services Building

U-PASS - A Message from UMSU President Bilan Arte

Hello Students! This is a message from the University of Manitoba Students' Union representing all undergraduate students at the University of Manitoba. Below is the referendum question being asked today, tomorrow and on Friday to all undergraduate students at the University. UMSU is interested in measuring student support for a U-PASS program and is inviting all students to learn more about the program at umsu.ca/u-pass and get involved in the decision making process by getting out and making an informed VOTE! "Are you in favour of a mandatory, universal bus pass that would: * cost each undergraduate student no more than $85 per semester, with the price to be adjusted by inflation yearly (using the Manitoba Consumer Price Index), * provide free transportation on Winnipeg Transit during the months of September to April, inclusive, and * include all undergraduate students who are enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester?" Reminder: Voluntary Withdrawal Deadline for Fall Term Courses is Wednesday, November 14, 2012 The deadline for Voluntary Withdrawal from Fall Term courses taught during the standard term is Wednesday, November 14. VW's must be done through Aurora Student and can be done up to 11:59 PM. Courses taught outside the standard term will have different VW deadlines - check with your faculty. Note: If you are On Hold for outstanding tuition, library books, parking fines, etc. you will not be able to access the Registration function in Aurora to VW a course. If you are On Hold and plan to VW, you must either first clear your Hold so that you can access the Registration functions in Aurora, or you must contact your academic advising office for assistance in dropping the course. New: As part of the University of Manitoba's commitment to providing an excellent learning experience for students, we would like to know why you have chosen not to complete a course or courses. Students who choose to VW will be asked to complete a brief confidential survey on the reason(s) for withdrawal. The information gathered will help us to determine if there is information or resources that may have helped you complete your courses successfully. Think before you drop... You may decide to VW from a class for a variety of reasons. Common situations include: * The course subject matter was not the same as originally expected; * Your overall course load is too demanding - withdrawing from one class will leave more time for others; * Your program focus has changed and the course is no longer required; * Your mid-term grades were not satisfactory - and you think withdrawing is better than receiving a low or failed grade. Dear University of Manitoba Student, The University of Manitoba has agreed to participate in an important national study on academic integrity being conducted by Julia Christensen Hughes from the University of Guelph and Don McCabe of Rutgers University. The purpose of this study is to identify what types of questionable academic behaviours students most report engaging in and what types of behaviours are perceived to be most frequently occurring by students, faculty and TAs. Ideas for what can be done to enhance cultures of integrity on Canadian university campuses will also be solicited. It is important that such behaviours and ideas be identified so that policies and practices can be developed that will help to protect the integrity of the academic experience and ensure a level playing field amongst students. Your participation will contribute to the national study as well as help the University of Manitoba identify what more it can be doing to help protect the integrity of your degree! It will bring 18,000 students and teachers to the MTS Centre to focus on how they can help build a better world. The values of local and global social activism and outreach that are at the heart of the We Day experience are part of our daily life at the University of Manitoba. This event gives us the opportunity to showcase our mission, our values and our programs to an audience of outstanding young people that we would be proud to have as students. We have a lot to offer them. University of Manitoba students have the opportunity to travel and learn through 138 exchange agreements with institutions in 35 countries. There are more than 100 campus groups where students can pursue their passion in community development, the arts, scientific discovery, leadership and entrepreneurship. The opportunities we can offer our students lead to fuller and richer lives for those of us who work here as well. We help build bigger futures for our students and contribute to the cultural, social and economic well-being of our community, province, country and world. We are proud that members of our community are contributing to We Day in a variety of ways. Tito Daodou, a fourth-year student in the Faculty of Medicine and recent winner of the Nahlah Ayad Prize for Global Citizenship, will join former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, alumnus Justice Murray Sinclair and Ladybug Foundation founder Hannah Taylor as speakers who will inspire young people to take action at home and abroad. Olympic bronze medallist and proud Bison Desiree Scott will also be at the University of Manitoba booth at We Day to sign autographs and share her story of triumph this summer on the soccer fields of London, England. In addition, 20 of our staff are volunteering at We Day and their contributions will help ensure the success of the event. The response to our call for action was overwhelming and it is gratifying to know that the university community shares our enthusiasm. Although we won't all be there in person, we hope our entire community can participate in We Day. We are installing a Pledge Wall at University Centre that will allow students, faculty and staff the opportunity to post and share their commitment to social change. Notification - Half Marathon and 5 km Walk/Run on Sunday, Sept. 23rd

To: All Staff & Students Please note that this Sunday, September 23rd there will be a half marathon taking place through part of the Fort Garry Campus as well as a 5 km walk/run. Neither event will restrict access to the campus but there may be some delays at intersections during each race. The Rotary Half Marathon will begin at 8 a.m. and will have participants running through the campus from approximately 8:20 - 10:30 a.m. The race path will include the East portion of campus with runners coming down University Crescent to Sifton Road, Saunderson Street, Freedman Crescent, out King's Drive. The Commerce Students' Association Race for Space will begin at 3 p.m. The race will take place mostly on sidewalks throughout campus. In the areas where there are not sidewalks - specifically Freedman Crescent, Saunderson Street, and Sifton Road - there will be pylons set up that will designate the race path. Road Closures on Campus Sunday, June 17h 2012 - Manitoba Marathon

The annual Manitoba Marathon is being held Sunday, June 17th, 2012. Again this year, the 2.6 mile Super Run will follow the ring road around campus between 7:00am and 9:00am. The Super Run route begins in front of the Max Bell Centre, heads north, and turns immediately onto Sifton Rd and follows the Dysart and the ring road to Freedman Crescent, University Crescent, Chancellor Matheson then finishes at the Pan Am stadium. To accommodate the Super Run as well as the regular half and full marathon routes, you should take note of the following campus access route closures: * 5:00 am University Crescent closed to vehicle traffic from Pembina Highway to Dafoe Road. The crescent will re-open around 1:00 pm. * 5:00 am Chancellor Matheson closed to vehicle traffic (except buses). As part of this initiative, the U of M community will continue its commitment to healthy active living by presenting the 23rdnd annual Sneakers in motion Day. Sneakers in motion Day will take place on Thursday June 7th at 12pm on the Fort Garry and the Bannatyne campuses. Sneakers in motion Day June 7th , 2012 12:00pm-1:00pm Sneakers in motion Day will be held at the: * Fort Garry Campus - Curry Place Pedway (rain location Max Bell Fieldhouse) * Bannatyne Campus - Brodie Atrium Hosted by the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management, Sneakers in motion Day is a fun and exciting event that includes a short or long walk around campus, prize give-a ways, entertainment and a healthy lunch. Prizes will be awarded to groups and individuals who participate in Fort Garry Campus event activities and dress in costume. At the Bannatyne Campus, 50/50 tickets will be sold and proceeds will go to the Osborne House Inc., a safe and supportive environment for women and their children who are experiencing domestic abuse. Walk participants on both campuses are asked donate their gently used shoe. Shoe donations will be given to the women and children of Osborne House who are striving to become or remain active during this difficult transition period in their lives. Lunch tickets for Sneakers in motion Day are $6.00 and they must be pre-purchased at the Answers Booth in University Centre, the Frank Kennedy Centre Customer Service Desk. New this year lunches can also be purchased by completing and emailing the lunch order form (with credit card information) to event organizer, who will arrange delivery of tickets to Fort Garry campus offices only. At the Bannatyne Campus, tickets can be purchased at the Joe Doupe Centre and the Bookstore. Deadline for purchasing lunch tickets is Monday June 4th 12:00pm (noon). CAMPUS BEAUTIFICATION DAY will be held on Thursday, May 24, 2012. This is the 15th year of this highly successful event which is made possible by the great leadership of the Physical Plant staff. Staff, students, faculty and retirees are invited to participate on a voluntary basis to help beautify the campus. Each department is requested to designate a CONTACT PERSON who will be responsible for coordinating the volunteers from their department. Jobs such as picking up paper, raking, sweeping, pulling weeds and planting flowers will be identified. The Department of Philanthropy will be approaching garden centres for donations of flowers and plants. Physical Plant staff will be assigned to each zone to work with the contact people to coordinate the projects. A brown bag meeting of all contact people will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room, 2nd Floor, University Centre at noon on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 to finalize the arrangements. Refreshments will be provided. On Campus Beautification Day, a barbecue lunch sponsored by ARAMARK will be held at noon in the quadrangle on the Fort Garry Campus and in front of the Brodie Centre on the Bannatyne Campus for all volunteers. Pepsi will be providing the refreshments. The Bookstore as well as various other business on Campus will be donating "door" prizes for the event. This year the Grand Prize is two airline tickets donated by West Jet. Teams are encouraged to propose projects which will be judged and the best gardens will be awarded with first, second and third prizes. Last year many innovative ideas were presented so please submit your ideas to campbeau(a)cc.umanitoba.ca<mailto:campbeau@cc.umanitoba.ca> (Fort Garry Campus) or jerry_wind(a)aramark.ca<mailto:jerry_wind@aramark.ca> (Bannatyne Campus). Everyone is invited to participate for as much time as their schedules permit. In the event of rain, the rain date is Friday, May 25, 2012 so please keep that date open as well. Resolved: April 19 JUMP System problems

Information Services & Technology has resolved the April 19th JUMP problem. The JUMP system is now available. If you are still having login issues you will need to close your web browser and try again. Should you continue to have problems you will need to clear your browser cache. Please contact the IST Help & Solutions Centre if you require assistance. The root cause of today's failure was that session management data got confused. This is a known bug and it has been about eight months since IST has experienced this bug. Typically IST is able to restore service with a ten minute outage. IST continues to investigate this known bug as we now have new log files from today's system failure. IST is working towards permanently resolving this bug and we apologize for today's outage. The following message is being sent on behalf of Deborah McCallum, Vice-President (Administration): To: Students, Faculty and Staff: From: Deborah McCallum, Vice-President (Administration) Date: February 22, 2012 Re: Event Day Plan Open House - February 29, 2012 As the Investors Group Field takes shape on our campus, we are excited by the opportunities the new, world-class stadium will bring to our university community. The new stadium brings with it a number of significant benefits to University of Manitoba staff, students and surrounding community residents. Our new Active Living Centre, two lighted artificial turf soccer fields and the football field to be shared by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Bisons and the community, combined will mean the University of Manitoba will be home to some of the best sports and recreation facilities in the country. While these facilities provide great benefits to students, faculty, staff and the City of Winnipeg, we also recognize our responsibility to ensure game and event days are positive experiences and involve minimal disruption to our community members. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Canadian Football League were mindful of the need for that balance when they developed the schedule for the upcoming season. In total, there are nine home games slated for 2012. Of those, four are weekend games scheduled on Saturday or Sunday. Of five weekday games, four are scheduled during July and August when there are fewer students, faculty and staff members on campus. Weekday games will also start at 7 p.m. or later to ensure efficient traffic and transit access to the Fort Garry Campus. To minimize any negative impact on our university community, we are working closely with the Winnipeg Football Club and the City of Winnipeg to draft a comprehensive event day plan. This plan outlines access to campus during events, transit opportunities, parking options and a variety of other elements which we believe will make the event day experience a positive one for all. The University of Manitoba is hosting an Open House to present details of the plan and to solicit feedback on its contents from our community. The President and I encourage you all to attend. The Open House will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 29 from 12:30-4:00 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room, 2nd Floor University Centre. Facilitators will be available at the open house to discuss the plan and address any concerns or questions. In addition, a new website will be launched on Feb. 29 that will provide on-going updates and further information. The City of Winnipeg is also hosting an Open House for area residents to obtain information on the plan on February 29 from 4 to 8:30 pm in the library at Dalhousie School, 262 Dalhousie Drive, Winnipeg. Interested area residents are also invited to attend that event. A second City of Winnipeg Open House will be held at the Canad Inn Fort Garry on Saturday, March 3 from 10 to 3 pm. Additional open house events will be hosted at a variety of locations around the city in the coming weeks and months. We believe Investors Group Field at the University of Manitoba will become a focal point for the positive transformational change in the spaces where we live, work, study, discover and play. Together, we can ensure a seamless transition into this positive new era for sports and recreation in our city and province.

Dear Students, For almost 135 years, the University of Manitoba has been shaping academic, business and community leaders, enhancing our community and conducting research that changes the world. Throughout our history, we have grown and evolved through a constant process of rethinking, re-evaluating and reassessing where we are, where we want to be and how we'll get there. Many members of the University of Manitoba community have heard me refer to the complex academic structure that exists here. Currently, we have 20 faculties and schools and 78 departments delivering programs to serve over 27,000 students. By comparison, the University of Toronto has the same number of faculties and schools, and only 14 additional departments, to serve 72,000 students. Almost 30,000 students at the University of Calgary are served by 13 faculties and schools encompassing 70 departments. At McMaster University, programs are delivered to its 27,000 students through 6 faculties and 49 departments. In fact, based on available data, no other medical-doctoral institution of our size and scope in Canada has as many free-standing faculties and schools or departments as we do. I believe that this overly elaborated academic structure impedes our academic work in at least three important ways. 1. It affects academic planning and decision making because academic leaders - especially deans and directors - are more removed from these processes than they should be. Put simply, this group is too large to bring together effectively on these and other matters. 2. This structure results in the inefficient use of our most precious resource, namely, our people, who should have the opportunity to use their skills more creatively to advance our learning, discovery and engagement missions. 3. Most importantly, the need to navigate within our highly articulated structure hinders progress on our Strategic Planning Framework priorities, notably, our commitment to providing an outstanding student experience and to enhancing our teaching and research programs in areas of strength and/or strategic importance to our province and nation. Students require more flexible program and course selection, and simpler academic regulations to achieve their educational and career goals; faculty, in turn, require greater opportunities for inter- and multi-disciplinary collaboration to develop and advance their teaching and research programs. I want to begin an important conversation within the University of Manitoba community about how we move forward and enhance our commitment to our students, our faculty and staff, and to the community we serve. It is my vision to see the University of Manitoba's academic structure better reflect our size and scope, enhancing rather than impeding our ability to deliver on our mandate. When the University of Manitoba's Strategic Planning Framework was adopted, I committed to ensuring that it would guide the decisions we make together and that we would use it to pursue our ultimate objective of achieving excellence. Initiatives like ROSE and OARs have been focused on transforming our organizational infrastructure and approaches, in order to improve the way the university conducts its work. It is now time to move forward with a plan to simplify and improve our university's academic structure, so that we can more effectively achieve our strategic vision. Some work designed to address our current academic structure is already underway. Late last year, we began a process where deans and directors of faculties and schools with natural affinities of various sorts began working in clusters to explore some new avenues of collaboration and interaction. Through this process, work on new cross-faculty academic programming, the sharing of administrative resources and facilities, and collaborative outreach activity has already begun. It has shown us that more and closer ties among units can be beneficial - to students, faculty and staff and to our community at large. This cluster mechanism, I believe, can serve as a useful starting point in the development of a plan to simplify and improve our academic structure. To this end, I have asked Dr. Joanne Keselman, Vice President (Academic) and Provost, to work with deans and directors through the cluster groups and they, in turn, with their faculty, staff, students, alumni and external stakeholders, to identify viable options for reducing the number of faculties and schools from the current total of 20 to a number closer to the national average of 13 by 2017. Based on discussions to date, it is clear that there are significant opportunities to improve our academic structure in the health sciences area. The move to interprofessional education and an increasing emphasis on multi-disciplinary research teams, combined with the need to address common issues including clinical education and program accreditation, provide compelling reasons to proceed with this cluster as a first step in the development of a plan. To this end, Dr. Keselman will work with the health sciences cluster to develop a proposal or set of options by December 2012 for consideration by our governing bodies. An interim report on this work will be provided in the spring of 2012. It is clear that other opportunities exist to improve our academic structure. I encourage faculties or departments that see possibilities where closer relationships among themselves would be beneficial to bring their ideas forward for discussion. We remain committed, as the only medical-doctoral institution in Manitoba, to contributing to our communities' and our province's cultural, social and economic well-being. This process will enhance our ability to meet the needs of our students, our faculty and our community as a whole. We want this change to be invigorating and exciting. We want it to be inclusive, and will engage the University of Manitoba in discussions about how this goal will be achieved. Finally, we will only move forward where it makes sense, and proposals will be advanced, discussed, improved and approved through the University of Manitoba's collegial governance processes. This institution will soon be 135 years old. We respect and honour our traditions but must adapt them to ensure a vibrant and prosperous future for the much loved University of Manitoba, its staff and students and the community it serves. 2011 Office of the President Holiday Greeting Card For the past two years, the Office of the President has sought submissions of original works of art for the cover of the President's holiday greeting card. For the 2011 card, we are asking for submissions of original works of poetry - specifically haiku - from members of the University of Manitoba community to use as the inside message for the greeting card. This is a wonderful opportunity to be creative, and perhaps try something new. One haiku will be featured in the President's 2011 card, which is shared with members of the University, community, corporate donors and friends. All submissions will be reviewed by a panel and assessed for their suitability. In the event that no suitable submissions are received, alternate work will be used. Please note that reproduction of the poem is for the sole purpose of the President's greeting card and that no financial gain will be made from the reproduction. GUIDELINES: Entries must be your original work and must adhere to the general rules of haiku. We are seeking examples that include the following characteristics: . A three-line form: five syllables in the first line, seven syllables in the second line, and five syllables in the third line. . A focus on nature. . November 15, 2011 marks the 26th anniversary of National Philanthropy Day, a special day that honours the impact of people who give generously to support causes that are important to them or volunteer their time to make a difference in their community. At the University of Manitoba we pay tribute to all of our alumni and friends and the great contributions that your goodwill brings to our lives, our communities and our world. All over the world, celebrations are being held to honour this unique day. In Manitoba, the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), Manitoba Chapter is hosting its own event, and I'd like to take a moment to acknowledge a few of our graduates who are being recognized for their commitment to our province: Dr. Frank J. LH masthead.jpg To Students, Staff and Alumni: On Remembrance Day, we reflect on the sacrifice of men and women who have given their lives to protect the rights and freedoms that we can too easily take for granted. The Avenue of the Elms on the Fort Garry Campus is a constant physical reminder that our students, faculty, staff and alumni at the University of Manitoba have been and continue to be touched by the tragedy of war. While that row of trees planted by the Manitoba Agricultural College is a memorial for its students who died in the First World War, there is nothing historic or distant about the danger that people face when they serve abroad. Cpl. Jordan Anderson, who was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan in 2007, died before he could receive the Bachelor of Arts Degree he earned through the University's Military Support Office. Cpl. Anderson's wife accepted his degree on his behalf. It was the first time a degree was granted posthumously. While we cannot enter into the personal grief felt by his wife and the rest of his family, we do share their sadness and pride. Cpl. Anderson served his country in a life that was far too short. We are fortunate to include him among our graduates. Soldiers who serve or have served our country are fathers, husbands and sons, mothers, wives and daughters, brothers and sisters, uncles and aunts. They are nieces, nephews and friends. It is important to remember those people, those families and their painful losses so that we never lose sight of the true cost of war. We can remember by pausing for at least a moment at the 11th hour on the 11th day to reflect on our good fortune or by attending a Remembrance Day ceremony. Sincerely, David

To Students, Faculty, Staff and Alumni: Earlier today in Halifax, the University of Manitoba added its voice to the apologies that have been expressed to Indian Residential School survivors at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. We join other national institutions which have previously expressed their deep regret for these schools and their damaging impact on First Nations, Métis and Inuit people, communities and cultures. We see this as one important step in the process of reconciliation. We are committed to advance Indigenous education and success in Canada with partners from the broader community. With our statement of apology and reconciliation, I believe we are well on our way to achieving that goal. The University of Manitoba statement of apology and reconciliation demonstrates our commitment to Indigenous students, faculty and staff. Our university remains committed to a welcoming environment where Indigenous cultures and values are included and reflected in our teaching, discovery and engagement. We trust our apology will be accepted in the spirit of generosity and reconciliation that has been the hallmark of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission process. I will be addressing our past while expressing to Indian Residential School survivors and their families, and to the members of the commission, our sincere commitment to reconciliation. The leadership demonstrated by the Faculty of Social Work in identifying the potential for the University of Manitoba to pursue this course of action, and Provost's Council's early endorsement, were critical. The statement represents the work of many, and reflects advice and input from University of Manitoba scholars from a variety of academic disciplines. It has been endorsed by the Board of Governors Executive Committee and shared with the Board of Governors and the Senate Executive Committee. I would like to thank all of them for their counsel and input. We are providing live streaming video of the statement at three locations in Winnipeg and one in Thompson. . Dear Student, >From November 17-20, 2011 the University of Calgary will be hosting the 5th Annual Canadian Conference on Student Leadership. The University of Manitoba Student Union and Student Life are teaming up to send an eight student delegation to represent the University of Manitoba. If you are available that weekend and interested in being one of the eight representatives, please submit: 1. A cover letter introducing yourself and why you believe you should be selected to be a delegate at this CCSL conference. 2. A resume that outlines your relevant student leadership experience, volunteer experience, and qualities you possess in academic and co-curricular areas. The anticipated cost for travel, accommodation, food and registration is $750. In exchange for you agreeing to attend a pre-conference meeting, attend the conference in its entirety, complete a report on the conference and facilitate some kind of 'information sharing' you learned at the conference with the University community, UMSU and Student Life will share your cost so that you only have to pay $250! Interested students that are in good academic standing can submit their application in person to UMSU (101 University Centre, Fort Garry Campus or Answers at the Bannatyne Campus) or Student Life (225 University Centre, Fort Garry Campus) or Services for Students at Bannatyne Campus (245 T wing Basic Science Bldg, Bannatyne Campus). Please enclose your submission in a sealed envelope with "I'm an Emerging Leader" on the cover.
