National Philanthropy Day

Dear faculty, staff and students at the University of Manitoba, Today, November 15, we celebrate National Philanthropy Day (NPD) across the country. This annual event began in the United States in 1986 as special day to honour the impact of people who give generously to support causes that are important to them or volunteer their time to make a difference in their community. Earlier this month, thegovernment of Canada passed a new bill to permanently establish November 15 as National Philanthropy Day in our country. At the University of Manitoba, we are thankful to our faculty, staff and students for their contributions. In countless ways, your generosity has made a positive impact on our university, our community and our world. All over the world, celebrations are being held to honour philanthropists and volunteers who make a difference in their communities. The Association of Fundraising Professionals, Manitoba Chapter will be recognizing a number of people who are committed to improving life in our province. Among them are two of our graduates: John Prystanski (BA/88, JD/12) is being honoured for his work as an Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser and Mark Evans (BCSc [Hons]/84), MSc/86, PhD/88) is being honoured for his work as an Outstanding Philanthropist. These are just two members of the University of Manitoba community who volunteer their time and their talents to make our neighbourhoods and workplaces better places to live and to work. Bannatyne Security Services: temporarily located in S108 Medical Services Building

Effective Friday, November 16th, the University of Manitoba Security Services at the Bannatyne Campus will be temporarily relocated to S108A Medical Services Building. Our permanent location (S105-Medical Services) will be undergoing some renovation work that is expected to take 7-10 days. Please be assured that our service to the community will continue uninterrupted during this time. Hello Students! This is a message from the University of Manitoba Students' Union representing all undergraduate students at the University of Manitoba. Below is the referendum question being asked today, tomorrow and on Friday to all undergraduate students at the University. UMSU is interested in measuring student support for a U-PASS program and is inviting all students to learn more about the program at umsu.ca/u-pass and get involved in the decision making process by getting out and making an informed VOTE! "Are you in favour of a mandatory, universal bus pass that would: * cost each undergraduate student no more than $85 per semester, with the price to be adjusted by inflation yearly (using the Manitoba Consumer Price Index), * provide free transportation on Winnipeg Transit during the months of September to April, inclusive, and * include all undergraduate students who are enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester?" Reminder: Voluntary Withdrawal Deadline for Fall Term Courses is Wednesday, November 14, 2012 The deadline for Voluntary Withdrawal from Fall Term courses taught during the standard term is Wednesday, November 14. VW's must be done through Aurora Student and can be done up to 11:59 PM. Courses taught outside the standard term will have different VW deadlines - check with your faculty. Note: If you are On Hold for outstanding tuition, library books, parking fines, etc. you will not be able to access the Registration function in Aurora to VW a course. If you are On Hold and plan to VW, you must either first clear your Hold so that you can access the Registration functions in Aurora, or you must contact your academic advising office for assistance in dropping the course. New: As part of the University of Manitoba's commitment to providing an excellent learning experience for students, we would like to know why you have chosen not to complete a course or courses. Students who choose to VW will be asked to complete a brief confidential survey on the reason(s) for withdrawal. The information gathered will help us to determine if there is information or resources that may have helped you complete your courses successfully. Think before you drop... You may decide to VW from a class for a variety of reasons. Common situations include: * The course subject matter was not the same as originally expected; * Your overall course load is too demanding - withdrawing from one class will leave more time for others; * Your program focus has changed and the course is no longer required; * Your mid-term grades were not satisfactory - and you think withdrawing is better than receiving a low or failed grade. Dear University of Manitoba Student, The University of Manitoba has agreed to participate in an important national study on academic integrity being conducted by Julia Christensen Hughes from the University of Guelph and Don McCabe of Rutgers University. The purpose of this study is to identify what types of questionable academic behaviours students most report engaging in and what types of behaviours are perceived to be most frequently occurring by students, faculty and TAs. Ideas for what can be done to enhance cultures of integrity on Canadian university campuses will also be solicited. It is important that such behaviours and ideas be identified so that policies and practices can be developed that will help to protect the integrity of the academic experience and ensure a level playing field amongst students. Your participation will contribute to the national study as well as help the University of Manitoba identify what more it can be doing to help protect the integrity of your degree! It will bring 18,000 students and teachers to the MTS Centre to focus on how they can help build a better world. The values of local and global social activism and outreach that are at the heart of the We Day experience are part of our daily life at the University of Manitoba. This event gives us the opportunity to showcase our mission, our values and our programs to an audience of outstanding young people that we would be proud to have as students. We have a lot to offer them. University of Manitoba students have the opportunity to travel and learn through 138 exchange agreements with institutions in 35 countries. There are more than 100 campus groups where students can pursue their passion in community development, the arts, scientific discovery, leadership and entrepreneurship. The opportunities we can offer our students lead to fuller and richer lives for those of us who work here as well. We help build bigger futures for our students and contribute to the cultural, social and economic well-being of our community, province, country and world. We are proud that members of our community are contributing to We Day in a variety of ways. Tito Daodou, a fourth-year student in the Faculty of Medicine and recent winner of the Nahlah Ayad Prize for Global Citizenship, will join former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, alumnus Justice Murray Sinclair and Ladybug Foundation founder Hannah Taylor as speakers who will inspire young people to take action at home and abroad. Olympic bronze medallist and proud Bison Desiree Scott will also be at the University of Manitoba booth at We Day to sign autographs and share her story of triumph this summer on the soccer fields of London, England. In addition, 20 of our staff are volunteering at We Day and their contributions will help ensure the success of the event. The response to our call for action was overwhelming and it is gratifying to know that the university community shares our enthusiasm. Although we won't all be there in person, we hope our entire community can participate in We Day. We are installing a Pledge Wall at University Centre that will allow students, faculty and staff the opportunity to post and share their commitment to social change. Notification - Half Marathon and 5 km Walk/Run on Sunday, Sept. 23rd

To: All Staff & Students Please note that this Sunday, September 23rd there will be a half marathon taking place through part of the Fort Garry Campus as well as a 5 km walk/run. Neither event will restrict access to the campus but there may be some delays at intersections during each race. The Rotary Half Marathon will begin at 8 a.m. and will have participants running through the campus from approximately 8:20 - 10:30 a.m. The race path will include the East portion of campus with runners coming down University Crescent to Sifton Road, Saunderson Street, Freedman Crescent, out King's Drive. The Commerce Students' Association Race for Space will begin at 3 p.m. The race will take place mostly on sidewalks throughout campus. In the areas where there are not sidewalks - specifically Freedman Crescent, Saunderson Street, and Sifton Road - there will be pylons set up that will designate the race path. Note: The University of Manitoba will not cancel/de-register students from current term courses for non-payment. Fee Payment Deferrals for Student Aid recipients If you are expecting a Government Student Loan, you may be eligible for a fee payment deferral. Tuition fee deferrals may be arranged prior to the fee payment deadline when students have unforeseen delays in receiving their government student loans. Road Closures on Campus Sunday, June 17h 2012 - Manitoba Marathon

The annual Manitoba Marathon is being held Sunday, June 17th, 2012. Again this year, the 2.6 mile Super Run will follow the ring road around campus between 7:00am and 9:00am. The Super Run route begins in front of the Max Bell Centre, heads north, and turns immediately onto Sifton Rd and follows the Dysart and the ring road to Freedman Crescent, University Crescent, Chancellor Matheson then finishes at the Pan Am stadium. To accommodate the Super Run as well as the regular half and full marathon routes, you should take note of the following campus access route closures: * 5:00 am University Crescent closed to vehicle traffic from Pembina Highway to Dafoe Road. The crescent will re-open around 1:00 pm. * 5:00 am Chancellor Matheson closed to vehicle traffic (except buses). The University of Manitoba is dedicated to promoting vibrant, healthy living and quality of life through programs and services. As part of this initiative, the U of M community will continue its commitment to healthy active living by presenting the 23rdnd annual Sneakers in motion Day. Sneakers in motion Day will take place on Thursday June 7th at 12pm on the Fort Garry and the Bannatyne campuses. Sneakers in motion Day June 7th , 2012 12:00pm-1:00pm Sneakers in motion Day will be held at the: * Fort Garry Campus - Curry Place Pedway (rain location Max Bell Fieldhouse) * Bannatyne Campus - Brodie Atrium Hosted by the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management, Sneakers in motion Day is a fun and exciting event that includes a short or long walk around campus, prize give-a ways, entertainment and a healthy lunch. Prizes will be awarded to groups and individuals who participate in Fort Garry Campus event activities and dress in costume. At the Bannatyne Campus, 50/50 tickets will be sold and proceeds will go to the Osborne House Inc., a safe and supportive environment for women and their children who are experiencing domestic abuse. Walk participants on both campuses are asked donate their gently used shoe. Shoe donations will be given to the women and children of Osborne House who are striving to become or remain active during this difficult transition period in their lives. Lunch tickets for Sneakers in motion Day are $6.00 and they must be pre-purchased at the Answers Booth in University Centre, the Frank Kennedy Centre Customer Service Desk. New this year lunches can also be purchased by completing and emailing the lunch order form (with credit card information) to event organizer, who will arrange delivery of tickets to Fort Garry campus offices only. At the Bannatyne Campus, tickets can be purchased at the Joe Doupe Centre and the Bookstore. Deadline for purchasing lunch tickets is Monday June 4th 12:00pm (noon). Dear UM students, The May Day and May Evening classes for the 2012 Summer Session commence the week of April 30. The Fee Payment deadline for courses in these time periods is Tuesday, May 1. If you have an outstanding balance after May 1, you will be assessed a Late Payment Fee. Check your account in Aurora for the specific payment dates that apply to your course registrations. Reminder: You are responsible for tuition and general fees for all courses in which you are registered. The University of Manitoba will not cancel/de-register students from current term courses due to non-payment. If you have registered for Summer 2012 courses and have decided not to attend, you must drop these courses by the applicable Registration Revision deadlines to avoid financial obligations for the course registrations. CAMPUS BEAUTIFICATION DAY will be held on Thursday, May 24, 2012. This is the 15th year of this highly successful event which is made possible by the great leadership of the Physical Plant staff. Staff, students, faculty and retirees are invited to participate on a voluntary basis to help beautify the campus. Each department is requested to designate a CONTACT PERSON who will be responsible for coordinating the volunteers from their department. The name, department, address and phone number of the contact person should be forwarded by Friday, April 27, 2012 to: Fort Garry Campus - campbeau(a)cc.umanitoba.ca<mailto:campbeau@cc.umanitoba.ca> Bannatyne Campus - jerry_wind(a)aramark.ca<mailto:jerry_wind@aramark.ca> If you have any questions, please contact Lyle Morin at 474-6286 or email lyle.morin(a)ad.umanitoba.ca<mailto:lyle.morin@ad.umanitoba.ca>. Jobs such as picking up paper, raking, sweeping, pulling weeds and planting flowers will be identified. The Department of Philanthropy will be approaching garden centres for donations of flowers and plants. Physical Plant staff will be assigned to each zone to work with the contact people to coordinate the projects. A brown bag meeting of all contact people will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room, 2nd Floor, University Centre at noon on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 to finalize the arrangements. Refreshments will be provided. On Campus Beautification Day, a barbecue lunch sponsored by ARAMARK will be held at noon in the quadrangle on the Fort Garry Campus and in front of the Brodie Centre on the Bannatyne Campus for all volunteers. Pepsi will be providing the refreshments. The Bookstore as well as various other business on Campus will be donating "door" prizes for the event. This year the Grand Prize is two airline tickets donated by West Jet. Teams are encouraged to propose projects which will be judged and the best gardens will be awarded with first, second and third prizes. Last year many innovative ideas were presented so please submit your ideas to campbeau(a)cc.umanitoba.ca<mailto:campbeau@cc.umanitoba.ca> (Fort Garry Campus) or jerry_wind(a)aramark.ca<mailto:jerry_wind@aramark.ca> (Bannatyne Campus). Volunteers are asked to bring gloves, rakes and spades from home although some will be provided by Physical Plant. Physical Plant will be hiring additional grounds staff during the summer to maintain the work. The project will commence at 9:00 AM and continue throughout the day. Everyone is invited to participate for as much time as their schedules permit. In the event of rain, the rain date is Friday, May 25, 2012 so please keep that date open as well. Sadly, some people live with those feelings all the time. You may even know someone. Now imagine having to live with the shame, discrimination and lack of treatment and support that goes with it. Resolved: April 19 JUMP System problems

Information Services & Technology has resolved the April 19th JUMP problem. The JUMP system is now available. If you are still having login issues you will need to close your web browser and try again. Should you continue to have problems you will need to clear your browser cache. Please contact the IST Help & Solutions Centre if you require assistance. The root cause of today's failure was that session management data got confused. This is a known bug and it has been about eight months since IST has experienced this bug. Typically IST is able to restore service with a ten minute outage. IST continues to investigate this known bug as we now have new log files from today's system failure. IST is working towards permanently resolving this bug and we apologize for today's outage. The following message is being sent on behalf of Deborah McCallum, Vice-President (Administration): To: Students, Faculty and Staff: From: Deborah McCallum, Vice-President (Administration) Date: February 22, 2012 Re: Event Day Plan Open House - February 29, 2012 As the Investors Group Field takes shape on our campus, we are excited by the opportunities the new, world-class stadium will bring to our university community. The new stadium brings with it a number of significant benefits to University of Manitoba staff, students and surrounding community residents. Our new Active Living Centre, two lighted artificial turf soccer fields and the football field to be shared by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Bisons and the community, combined will mean the University of Manitoba will be home to some of the best sports and recreation facilities in the country. While these facilities provide great benefits to students, faculty, staff and the City of Winnipeg, we also recognize our responsibility to ensure game and event days are positive experiences and involve minimal disruption to our community members. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Canadian Football League were mindful of the need for that balance when they developed the schedule for the upcoming season. In total, there are nine home games slated for 2012. Of those, four are weekend games scheduled on Saturday or Sunday. Of five weekday games, four are scheduled during July and August when there are fewer students, faculty and staff members on campus. Weekday games will also start at 7 p.m. or later to ensure efficient traffic and transit access to the Fort Garry Campus. To minimize any negative impact on our university community, we are working closely with the Winnipeg Football Club and the City of Winnipeg to draft a comprehensive event day plan. This plan outlines access to campus during events, transit opportunities, parking options and a variety of other elements which we believe will make the event day experience a positive one for all. The University of Manitoba is hosting an Open House to present details of the plan and to solicit feedback on its contents from our community. The President and I encourage you all to attend. The Open House will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 29 from 12:30-4:00 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room, 2nd Floor University Centre. Facilitators will be available at the open house to discuss the plan and address any concerns or questions. In addition, a new website will be launched on Feb. 29 that will provide on-going updates and further information. The City of Winnipeg is also hosting an Open House for area residents to obtain information on the plan on February 29 from 4 to 8:30 pm in the library at Dalhousie School, 262 Dalhousie Drive, Winnipeg. Interested area residents are also invited to attend that event. A second City of Winnipeg Open House will be held at the Canad Inn Fort Garry on Saturday, March 3 from 10 to 3 pm. Additional open house events will be hosted at a variety of locations around the city in the coming weeks and months. We believe Investors Group Field at the University of Manitoba will become a focal point for the positive transformational change in the spaces where we live, work, study, discover and play. Together, we can ensure a seamless transition into this positive new era for sports and recreation in our city and province.

Dear Students, For almost 135 years, the University of Manitoba has been shaping academic, business and community leaders, enhancing our community and conducting research that changes the world. Throughout our history, we have grown and evolved through a constant process of rethinking, re-evaluating and reassessing where we are, where we want to be and how we'll get there. Many members of the University of Manitoba community have heard me refer to the complex academic structure that exists here. Currently, we have 20 faculties and schools and 78 departments delivering programs to serve over 27,000 students. By comparison, the University of Toronto has the same number of faculties and schools, and only 14 additional departments, to serve 72,000 students. Almost 30,000 students at the University of Calgary are served by 13 faculties and schools encompassing 70 departments. At McMaster University, programs are delivered to its 27,000 students through 6 faculties and 49 departments. In fact, based on available data, no other medical-doctoral institution of our size and scope in Canada has as many free-standing faculties and schools or departments as we do. I believe that this overly elaborated academic structure impedes our academic work in at least three important ways. 1. It affects academic planning and decision making because academic leaders - especially deans and directors - are more removed from these processes than they should be. Put simply, this group is too large to bring together effectively on these and other matters. 2. This structure results in the inefficient use of our most precious resource, namely, our people, who should have the opportunity to use their skills more creatively to advance our learning, discovery and engagement missions. 3. Most importantly, the need to navigate within our highly articulated structure hinders progress on our Strategic Planning Framework priorities, notably, our commitment to providing an outstanding student experience and to enhancing our teaching and research programs in areas of strength and/or strategic importance to our province and nation. Students require more flexible program and course selection, and simpler academic regulations to achieve their educational and career goals; faculty, in turn, require greater opportunities for inter- and multi-disciplinary collaboration to develop and advance their teaching and research programs. I want to begin an important conversation within the University of Manitoba community about how we move forward and enhance our commitment to our students, our faculty and staff, and to the community we serve. It is my vision to see the University of Manitoba's academic structure better reflect our size and scope, enhancing rather than impeding our ability to deliver on our mandate. When the University of Manitoba's Strategic Planning Framework was adopted, I committed to ensuring that it would guide the decisions we make together and that we would use it to pursue our ultimate objective of achieving excellence. Initiatives like ROSE and OARs have been focused on transforming our organizational infrastructure and approaches, in order to improve the way the university conducts its work. It is now time to move forward with a plan to simplify and improve our university's academic structure, so that we can more effectively achieve our strategic vision. Some work designed to address our current academic structure is already underway. Late last year, we began a process where deans and directors of faculties and schools with natural affinities of various sorts began working in clusters to explore some new avenues of collaboration and interaction. Through this process, work on new cross-faculty academic programming, the sharing of administrative resources and facilities, and collaborative outreach activity has already begun. It has shown us that more and closer ties among units can be beneficial - to students, faculty and staff and to our community at large. This cluster mechanism, I believe, can serve as a useful starting point in the development of a plan to simplify and improve our academic structure. To this end, I have asked Dr. Joanne Keselman, Vice President (Academic) and Provost, to work with deans and directors through the cluster groups and they, in turn, with their faculty, staff, students, alumni and external stakeholders, to identify viable options for reducing the number of faculties and schools from the current total of 20 to a number closer to the national average of 13 by 2017. Based on discussions to date, it is clear that there are significant opportunities to improve our academic structure in the health sciences area. The move to interprofessional education and an increasing emphasis on multi-disciplinary research teams, combined with the need to address common issues including clinical education and program accreditation, provide compelling reasons to proceed with this cluster as a first step in the development of a plan. To this end, Dr. Keselman will work with the health sciences cluster to develop a proposal or set of options by December 2012 for consideration by our governing bodies. An interim report on this work will be provided in the spring of 2012. It is clear that other opportunities exist to improve our academic structure. I encourage faculties or departments that see possibilities where closer relationships among themselves would be beneficial to bring their ideas forward for discussion. We remain committed, as the only medical-doctoral institution in Manitoba, to contributing to our communities' and our province's cultural, social and economic well-being. This process will enhance our ability to meet the needs of our students, our faculty and our community as a whole. We want this change to be invigorating and exciting. We want it to be inclusive, and will engage the University of Manitoba in discussions about how this goal will be achieved. Finally, we will only move forward where it makes sense, and proposals will be advanced, discussed, improved and approved through the University of Manitoba's collegial governance processes. This institution will soon be 135 years old. We respect and honour our traditions but must adapt them to ensure a vibrant and prosperous future for the much loved University of Manitoba, its staff and students and the community it serves. 2011 Office of the President Holiday Greeting Card For the past two years, the Office of the President has sought submissions of original works of art for the cover of the President's holiday greeting card. For the 2011 card, we are asking for submissions of original works of poetry - specifically haiku - from members of the University of Manitoba community to use as the inside message for the greeting card. This is a wonderful opportunity to be creative, and perhaps try something new. One haiku will be featured in the President's 2011 card, which is shared with members of the University, community, corporate donors and friends. All submissions will be reviewed by a panel and assessed for their suitability. In the event that no suitable submissions are received, alternate work will be used. Please note that reproduction of the poem is for the sole purpose of the President's greeting card and that no financial gain will be made from the reproduction. GUIDELINES: Entries must be your original work and must adhere to the general rules of haiku. We are seeking examples that include the following characteristics: . A three-line form: five syllables in the first line, seven syllables in the second line, and five syllables in the third line. . A focus on nature. . A seasonal focus, appropriate to this time of year. LH masthead.jpg To Students, Staff and Alumni: On Remembrance Day, we reflect on the sacrifice of men and women who have given their lives to protect the rights and freedoms that we can too easily take for granted. The Avenue of the Elms on the Fort Garry Campus is a constant physical reminder that our students, faculty, staff and alumni at the University of Manitoba have been and continue to be touched by the tragedy of war. While that row of trees planted by the Manitoba Agricultural College is a memorial for its students who died in the First World War, there is nothing historic or distant about the danger that people face when they serve abroad. Cpl. Jordan Anderson, who was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan in 2007, died before he could receive the Bachelor of Arts Degree he earned through the University's Military Support Office. Cpl. Anderson's wife accepted his degree on his behalf. It was the first time a degree was granted posthumously. While we cannot enter into the personal grief felt by his wife and the rest of his family, we do share their sadness and pride. Cpl. Anderson served his country in a life that was far too short. We are fortunate to include him among our graduates. Soldiers who serve or have served our country are fathers, husbands and sons, mothers, wives and daughters, brothers and sisters, uncles and aunts. They are nieces, nephews and friends. It is important to remember those people, those families and their painful losses so that we never lose sight of the true cost of war. We can remember by pausing for at least a moment at the 11th hour on the 11th day to reflect on our good fortune or by attending a Remembrance Day ceremony. Sincerely, David

We join other national institutions which have previously expressed their deep regret for these schools and their damaging impact on First Nations, Métis and Inuit people, communities and cultures. We see this as one important step in the process of reconciliation. We are committed to advance Indigenous education and success in Canada with partners from the broader community. With our statement of apology and reconciliation, I believe we are well on our way to achieving that goal. The University of Manitoba Student Union and Student Life are teaming up to send an eight student delegation to represent the University of Manitoba. If you are available that weekend and interested in being one of the eight representatives, please submit: 1. A cover letter introducing yourself and why you believe you should be selected to be a delegate at this CCSL conference. 2. A resume that outlines your relevant student leadership experience, volunteer experience, and qualities you possess in academic and co-curricular areas. The anticipated cost for travel, accommodation, food and registration is $750. Dear UM students, The Registration Revision deadline for Fall 2011 is Wednesday, September 21. Courses that are offered in Fall 2011 and courses that span Fall 2011/Winter 2012 may not be added after this date. If you have registered for Fall 2011 courses or spanned courses in Fall 2011/Winter 2012 and you have decided not to attend, you must drop these courses by Wednesday September 21. You will be subject to all associated fees for courses in which you are registered after this date. Although you may Voluntary Withdraw from Fall Term courses until November 16 and spanned courses until March 16, you will not receive a refund of Fall Term fees if you drop the course(s) after September 21. Courses are dropped using Aurora Student. If you are currently on Hold, please contact your faculty for assistance in dropping a course(s). Fee Payment Fee accounts with outstanding balances after the September 7 fee payment deadline have been assessed late fees. A further $40 late fee will be applied to accounts outstanding after September 21. Students with outstanding fee balances will be placed on Hold and may be subject to de-registration from courses that begin in Winter Term. You will not be cancelled or de-registered from Fall Term courses and will be responsible for tuition and all associated fees. UMSU Health & Dental Plan Deadline to Opt-Out: Wednesday, September 21, 2011 Steps. . Check your Aurora student fee account to ensure you were assessed the health and dental fees. . While the start of the new school year at the University of Manitoba always offers new hope and new opportunity, this fall will be especially memorable because of changes we are making to better serve a new generation of trailblazers, visionaries and innovators. The transformations bearing fruit this fall are part of a vision to revitalize the physical spaces where we live, work, study and play. In addition to bringing new excitement to our university, these changes are also contributing to the impressive vibrancy already being experienced in our city and province. One of the most visible signs of progress is the completion of the new Pembina Hall Residence, which will provide a student experience like no other. All 360 units at Pembina Hall are single rooms with an exterior glass wall providing plenty of natural light and excellent views of the Fort Garry campus to the north and the Red River to the south. Each room is complete with its own private bathroom and shower. Our School of Art will have a new home this fall when it moves into the stunning new 70,000 square foot ARTLab. It will serve as home for visual artists to learn and create and will be the new home to Gallery One One. It is designed by Vancouvers Patkau Architects, founded by University of Manitoba alumni John and Patricia Patkau. The ARTLab is a cornerstone of our plan to develop an innovative nurturing ground for visual and performing arts that takes advantage of the space made available when Taché Hall was closed as a student residence in the spring. The Taché Arts Complex will give the iconic building new life while preserving its historic façade. The space will be transformed into a new music complex, housing the Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music, classroom space, and a 500-seat concert hall with an orchestra pit. When completed, it will be a hub of cultural activity that will enhance our universitys reputation for inspiring the creative spirit of our students. This fall marks the last season for our Bisons football team to play its home games in University Stadium. Next year, they will play in one of the best football stadiums anywhere a 33,000 seat facility that will offer one of the best game day experiences in North America. This facility will help recruit athletes and will be a great location where students, staff, alumni and other fans can cheer on the Bisons. Further improvements will come to the facilities our athletes, students, staff and the community use when construction begins on the New Active Living Centre. There will also be more positive innovations in the year ahead. We have recently created a new Office of Campus Planning to facilitate discussions about how to make best use of assets such as the former Southwood Golf Course. There will be some challenges along the way. I want to thank you all for your patience if and when construction projects require some short-term disruptions in traffic, pedestrian movement or temporary relocations of office or classroom space. However, the improvements in our campus spaces will more than make up for those challenges. We congratulate our innovative staff who have overseen the design and have executed the plans that are coming to fruition. We are also grateful for the visionary support of our provincial and federal partners and our generous benefactors. So as we begin the fall term, I am proud to welcome new students to our community of trailblazers, visionaries and innovators. I also want to wish everyone great success in the year ahead. This message is delivered by President David Barnard, University of Manitoba Last fall, a matter arose involving a University of Manitoba doctoral student which garnered a great deal of public attention. At the time, I committed to providing you with an update on this case when it was prudent to do so. A court ruling was issued on the matter yesterday which brings some closure to the case and allows me to comment further. A full version of the ruling can be found attached to my statement at www.umanitoba.ca. The matter revolved around a doctoral student, who cannot be named to protect their privacy, who was provided with an accommodation by the University of Manitoba to complete a degree based on consideration of a documented disability. Under the Manitoba Human Rights Code and according to the universitys own policies, the University of Manitoba was obligated to accommodate this proven, professionally-diagnosed disability and did so. A University of Manitoba professor, Dr. Gábor Lukács, who did not teach or advise this student and was not involved in the decision to accommodate their disability, disagreed with the accommodation and chose to take the matter to the Manitoba Court of Queens Bench where it was adjudicated over the last year. A ruling in the matter was released late yesterday. The question before the court was whether Dr. Lukács, given his lack of direct involvement with the student, had the legal standing to challenge the universitys decision to accommodate the students disability. In her ruling, Justice Deborah McCawley determined that Professor Lukács does not have such standing and does not have the legal right to challenge the universitys decision. I fail to see any direct, legitimate personal or private interest as defined by the authorities which would grant Dr. Lukács private interest standing, wrote Justice McCawley in her ruling. He did not teach the student in question, he was only laterally a member of the Committee, he himself does not hold a degree from the University of Manitoba nor does he represent in any official capacity anyone but himself. Neither has he demonstrated any damages other than unsubstantiated statements as to what he thinks will occur if he does not succeed in his mission. Justice McCawley also made it clear that the decision of how and when to confer academic degrees lies with universities, not courts of law. While I am pleased with the ruling, I want to reemphasize that the University of Manitoba encourages informed debate on issues related to academic policy, such as those in the case just heard. Where it is possible for us to improve our policies and improve transparency of our processes, we will do so. To this end, a committee has been established to review: · How to balance the Universitys legal obligation to offer reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities while protecting academic standards; · What types of accommodations may be offered, without compromising academic standards; · Who should decide on whether accommodations should be offered, and if so, what type; · What types of evidence of disability should the decision-maker require; · With whom is the decision-maker required to consult; · How to ensure timely decisions on accommodations are made, so that a students academic progress is not compromised; and, · How to protect the privacy of students while assessing a case and implementing accommodations. Discussion of these matters is ongoing and involves students, faculty, staff and experts in these fields. A final report is expected from this committee later this year. The University of Manitoba will use their recommendations to reinforce our commitment to being a responsive and responsible academic institution. Every year, the University of Manitoba offers a wide-range of bursaries to both new and continuing full and part-time students who are enrolled in school from September to April who have a demonstrated financial need and a minimum academic standing. Bursaries - student funding which does not need to be repaid - range in amounts from $100 to $1,000, with over $3 million awarded annually. Bursary awards are primarily based upon financial need (as opposed to scholarships which are primarily based upon your academics/marks). General bursary criteria: * International students in their first year of post-secondary study in Canada are not eligible to apply to the general bursary program. * All students must complete courses in both fall & winter terms to be eligible. * In most cases, students must register for and complete at least 60 percent of a full course-load per term (i.e., a minimum of 9 credit hours per term). Graduate students do not have to adhere to credit hour minimums but must be registered as full-time students with the Faculty of Graduates Studies. * As always, financial need must be clearly documented on the application. Students who will have 2011-2012 government student loans have an easier way of documenting financial need. Student aid recipients will be required to submit copies of their current "official" government loan assessment (not 'quick assessments') to support their declaration of financial need. * Students must meet minimum G.P.A requirements. Continuing students must have a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 2.0. New students (from high school) must have a grade 12 average of 70% or higher. Results are finalized in mid-December of each year and money is applied to tuition fees for successful students. Elevator Emergency phone service will be out from 10 P.M. until midnight IP Telephone sets will be unavailable until 3:00 a.m. IP telephones are usually connected to the faceplate with a blue patch cord. Convocation is a celebration of the most important investment we make in our lives, the investment in education. I am extremely proud of all of our graduates and am confident their hard work and determination will be rewarded as they begin their careers or pursue graduate studies. I recognize that many contribute to the investment of education. The student, their families, their professors, the university community and the public at large all make contributions - some large, some small - that ultimately lead to graduation day. While the students are justifiably in the spotlight, convocation gives us the opportunity to gather as a community of learning and share that success. Convocation does not signal the end of a journey. In many ways, it is just the beginning. The graduates we celebrate with this ceremony will share their talents and skills with their community in ways which will enrich us all. I invite and strongly encourage them to play an active and permanent role in our university as they move from student to alumni. The University of Manitoba alumni family is critical to the success of the institution and of students who are yet to arrive here to study. They act as ambassadors, proving to prospective students, their families, and employers that the University of Manitoba plays a vital role in the successes of individuals and our community. I am constantly inspired by our University of Manitoba alumni and how they have used what they have learned on this campus to achieve personal success while making their communities, their provinces or states, their countries and the world a better place. Eight of our nine honorary graduates this year are University of Manitoba alumni who have achieved great personal success and have made great contributions to the university following graduation. They include: * Allan Ronald, a pioneer in the field of infectious disease research who helped establish the U of M's team of world-renowned infectious disease experts; * Claude Bernier, who has been recognized for his work as a distinguished researcher and trailblazer with respect to improving global wheat production; * Catherine "Kiki" Delaney, a philanthropist and Member of the Order of Canada. Ms Delaney was one of the first women to conquer the male-dominated Bay Street status quo before establishing her own successful investment council firm; * Stu Clark, a successful Calgary-based entrepreneur whose vision and generosity have been driving forces in helping make the I. H. Asper School of Business a world-class hub of entrepreneurial activity; * Gary and Janice Filmon, who have made contributions to this province that extend far beyond Mr. Filmon's tenure as Manitoba premier. As distinguished alumni of the U of M, the Filmons have consistently risen to the challenge of helping promote and advance the reputation of their alma mater; * Terry Sargeant, the former chair of the U of M Board of Governors and one-time MP. Mr. Sargent has been integral to trendsetting causes such as the Manitoba Clean Environment Commission as well as lending his support to the arts through his involvement on various local boards; and * Philip Lee, Manitoba's first Chinese-Canadian lieutenant-governor and, for more than three decades, a staunch supporter and defender of Chinese Canadians across the country. Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, a Palestinian doctor and fertility expert who was born and raised in a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip and has dedicated his life to the search for peace in the Middle East rounds out or list of inspiring honorary degree recipients. While the alumni we are celebrating are an impressive group, I am confident the class of 2011 will meet and exceed the success of the graduates that came before them in ways we cannot possibly imagine. They will serve as new ambassadors for our university as they make their mark in the world. They are the next generation of alumni and benefactors who will contribute to our university and our community. Security Alert: Water Bottle Contamination

The Winnipeg Police Service, University of Manitoba Security Services, University of Manitoba Environmental Health and Safety Office and the Public Health Inspector are investigating what appears to be an intentional contamination of an employee's personal water bottle with a noxious substance. The tampering of this water bottle took place on the Bannatyne Campus sometime between May 09, 2011 and May 10th, 2011. Employees are cautioned not to leave personal drink bottles, food or lunch boxes unattended and to report any occurrences of suspected tampering to University of Manitoba Security Services at 474-9312."

Then it's time to take charge of your finances! Your government student loan(s) may come from the federal government and or your provincial/territorial government. This means you could have more than one loan to pay back. The National Student Loan Service Centre (NSLSC) will send your Consolidation Agreement by mail before you are required to start making payments. The Agreement sets the terms for the repayment of your Canada Student Loan; this is the federal portion of your loan. You'll have to make a number of decisions, including the type of interest rate and how long you'll take to repay your loan. Depending on your situation, you might also receive another Consolidation Agreement by mail for your provincial or territorial student loan. You don't have to make any payments on your student loan(s) for the first six months after you leave school; however, interest will be added to your Canada Student Loan during these six months. Campus Beautification Day May 26, 2011

CAMPUS BEAUTIFICATION DAY will be held on Thursday, May 26, 2011. This is the 14th year of this highly successful event which is made possible by the great leadership of the Physical Plant staff. Staff, students, faculty and retirees are invited to participate on a voluntary basis to help beautify the campus. Each department is requested to designate a CONTACT PERSON who will be responsible for coordinating the volunteers from their department. Physical Plant staff will be assigned to each zone to work with the contact people to coordinate the projects. A brown bag meeting of all contact people will be held in Room 204 University Centre (Marshall McLuhan), at noon on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 to finalize the arrangements. Refreshments will be provided. On Campus Beautification Day, a barbecue lunch sponsored by ARAMARK will be held at noon in the quadrangle on the Fort Garry Campus and in front of the Brodie Centre on the Bannatyne Campus for all volunteers. Pepsi will be providing the refreshments. The Bookstore as well as various other business on Campus will be donating "door" prizes for the event. This year the Grand Prize is two airline tickets donated by West Jet. Teams are encouraged to propose projects which will be judged and the best gardens will be awarded with first, second and third prizes. Last year many innovative ideas were presented so please submit your ideas to campbeau(a)cc.umanitoba.ca (Fort Garry Campus) or b_domaradzki(a)umanitoba.ca (Bannatyne Campus). Volunteers are asked to bring gloves, rakes and spades from home although some will be provided by Physical Plant. Physical Plant will be hiring additional grounds staff during the summer to maintain the work. The project will commence at 9:00 AM and continue throughout the day. Everyone is invited to participate for as much time as their schedules permit. In the event of rain, the rain date is Friday, May 27, 2011 so please keep that date open as well. Attempted theft - Banntyne Campus

At 7:45 this morning, a female HSC employee using the ATM located in the Atrium of the Brodie Centre, Bannatyne Campus, was approached by a male who attempted to take her money. University staff and Patrol Officer gave chase and male fled southbound past McDermot Avenue. No weapons involved. No injuries reported. WPS on scene and investigating. Male described as: approx 5' 2" slim build, 120 lbs 20-25 yrs darker skin tone drk hair and goatee wearing blue jeans carrying a blue jean "Dickies" backpack. Security Services reminds everyone to remain aware of your surroundings and call 474-9341 for emergency, criminal, and safety-related matters.

Changes to the University of Manitoba General Bursary Application Process

Effective August 2011, we will be moving away from a paper-based bursary application to a fully integrated ON-LINE application process! (The 2010/11 application was available on-line but had to be printed off before completion while the new application can be completed and submitted on-line.) The new on-line application will become available in late August. Please check the Financial Aid & Awards website throughout the summer for updates. http://umanitoba.ca/student/fin_awards/ Basic bursary criteria: * All students must complete courses in both fall & winter terms to be eligible. * In most cases, students must register for and complete at least 60 percent of a full course-load per term (i.e., a minimum of 9 credit hours per term). Graduate students do not have to adhere to credit hour minimums but must be registered as full-time students with the Faculty of Graduates Studies. * As always, financial need must be clearly documented on the application. Students who will have 2011-2012 government student loans have an easier way of documenting financial need. Student aid recipients will likely be required to submit copies of their current "official" government loan assessment (not 'quick assessments') to support their declaration of financial need. * Students must meet minimum G.P.A requirements. Continuing students must have a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 2.0. New students (from high school) must have a grade 12 average of 70% or higher. Reminder: Voluntary Withdrawal Deadline for Fall/Winter and Winter Term Courses is Friday, March 18, 2011 The deadline for Voluntary Withdrawal from Fall/Winter and Winter Term courses taught during the standard term is this Friday, March 18. VW's must be done through Aurora Student. Courses taught outside the standard term will have different VW deadlines. Note - if you are On Hold for outstanding tuition, library books, parking fines, etc. you will not be able to access the Registration function in Aurora to VW a course. If you are On Hold and plan to VW, you must either first clear your Hold so that you can access the Registration functions in Aurora, or you must contact your Faculty (University 1) advising office for assistance in dropping the course. Are you planning to take courses in Summer Session? Join the thousands of students who take advantage of Summer Session to lighten their load in fall & winter, finish their degree faster, enjoy smaller classes, or catch up on missed or failed courses. Here are some things to know if you are planning to register for Summer Session . Registration begins March 21, 2011. You will be assigned one day during the first week in which you can register. The <http://www.umanitoba.ca/extended/summer/calendar/registration/reg_sched.sht ml> Registration Schedule indicates registration dates and times. Find your registration time on Aurora Student. Log in and select Enrolment & Academic Records. Select Registration and then Registration Time & Status. While on this page you should also check to see if: o You have any Holds that will prevent registration (including Advisor Holds for students in specific programs); o Your academic status prevents registration (e.g. academic suspension); o Your record is not currently active due to an absence from university. . For the first 5 days of registration (March 21, 22, 23, 24, and 25), spaces in most courses are released each day in equal numbers to ensure fair access for all students. For example, if a course has 50 spaces available, 10 spaces will be released each day. During these first 5 days of registration, the only day you may register is determined by the last two digits of your Student Number. You may register between 9:00 am and 12:00 midnight on your day of registration. . If you are planning to Repeat a course(s) you have previously completed, you must obtain permission from your faculty (University 1) advising office prior to registration. Your advisor can also check to ensure that a course Repeat is to your benefit depending on your academic goals. Do this in advance of your registration day to ensure that your registration is not delayed and you don't miss out on space. . If you are expecting to graduate in Spring 2011, you must re-apply for admission if you plan to continue taking courses in Summer Session. . Remember that you are financially and academically responsible for all courses in which you are registered after the Revision deadline. This Revision period is very short in Summer Session, so make sure you drop a course you will not be taking before it begins - or at the latest before the applicable Revision deadline. Failure to pay for your courses will not result in a de-registration of courses. Important Notice for Telephone Service on March 2

Information Services & Technology is required to perform maintenance on the telephone system on March 2nd. This maintenance will impact all telephone services on both campuses. From 9 P.M until 11 P.M. the phone services that will be impacted are: No 911 service from a university phone No 555 service No local calls No long distance calls No voicemail service No internal calls on campus Code blue stations will not work during this time. Panic alarms will have periodic outages between 9 P.M. until 3 A.M. Elevator Emergency phone service will be out from 9 P.M. until 11P.M. IP Telephone sets will be unavailable until 3:00 a.m. on March 3. IP telephones are usually connected to the faceplate with a blue patch cord. In the case of an emergency please call 911 from a CELLULAR phone. Then it's time to take charge of your finances! Your government student loan(s) may come from the federal government and or your provincial/territorial government. This means you could have more than one loan to pay back. The National Student Loan Service Centre (NSLSC) will send your Consolidation Agreement by mail before you are required to start making payments. The Agreement sets the terms for the repayment of your Canada Student Loan; this is the federal portion of your loan. You'll have to make a number of decisions, including the type of interest rate and how long you'll take to repay your loan. Depending on your situation, you might also receive another Consolidation Agreement by mail for your provincial or territorial student loan. You don't have to make any payments on your student loan(s) for the first six months after you leave school; however, interest will be added to your Canada Student Loan during these six months. Strike Action by the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) at the University

The collective agreement in place between the University of Manitoba and the 533 CAW (Canadian Auto Workers( Local 3007 workers (representing caretakers, food service workers, groundskeepers, skilled trades and powerhouse workers) has expired. Despite regular bargaining sessions between the union and the university, an agreement has not yet been reached. The University of Manitoba continues to negotiate with the union and remains hopeful an agreement will still be achieved. The union has set a meeting for its membership for the evening of Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at which time its possible they may decide to take strike action immediately. Strike action could occur therefore as early as Wednesday, February 16. There may be traffic delays getting to the University due to picketing activity. The University will continue to operate as normal to the extent possible. Classes will continue as scheduled. The libraries will remain open. Picket Line Information Students have the right to choose whether or not they will cross the picket line. The University will make efforts to accommodate students to ensure they are not discriminated against as a result of their decision. However, students are responsible for materials covered in class. Students not wanting to cross the picket line should contact their instructors to discuss reasonable accommodation. All parties, including employees on strike and individuals crossing the picket lines, are responsible for refraining from illegal behavior. Please exercise patience and caution in crossing picket lines. Picket line activity will be videotaped and recorded for safety and security purposes and will be made available to Winnipeg Police Services, if necessary. If difficulties are experienced, please contact Security Services at 474-9312. Rogers and MTS Mobility cellular customers can also reach Security Services by dialing #555. Food Services In the event of a strike, food services will be reduced; however some locations will remain open as identified below. Students are encouraged to bring their own lunch should a strike occur. · Campo Centre Café (limited menu) · Noodles & Soup · Tim Hortons Campo main floor · Fresh Food Company (closed during reading week as previously scheduled) Transit Winnipeg Transit will operate and have indicated they will cross the picket line. However, staff and students are encouraged to allow extra time to get to work and classes. The on-campus shuttle bus will also operate but may experience some delays. Special arrangements have been made to continue on-campus (Fort Garry) transportation for students with disabilities. Custodial Services Regular custodial services will not be available in the event of a strike. Arrangements have been made to ensure that washroom facilities will be maintained. Garbage bins will be placed on campus and they will be emptied on a regular basis. Cleaning of individual offices will not be provided. Staff and student support in caring for the campus is appreciated. Maps showing the location of the garbage bins will be posted across campus and on the University web site.
