[Image] This message is sent on behalf of The Office of the Vice-President (Research and International) Re: VPRI Undergraduate Research Award (URA) Opportunities Dear University of Manitoba Undergraduate Students: Wondering what to do in the summer of 2024? Why not experience research with a professor at your own university! Professors at the University of Manitoba, through their work, are contributing to the cultural, economic, health, and social well-being of citizens of Manitoba, Canada, and the world. By tackling challenging and complex issues and topics, they strive to make our lives better and more meaningful, bringing insight to all. UM Professors collectively draw in nearly $220 million from external sources to the University, on a competitive basis, to support their research, scholarly work, and creative activities, and to nurture young minds to become trailblazers, pioneers, and innovators. About the Undergraduate Research Award The award provides the opportunity for you to be mentored by a professor of your choice for 16 weeks (between May–August 2024) and gain valuable experience in your field of interest. Recipients also receive a $7000 award. Of the many awards available, at least 10% of these awards will be made available to students who self-declare as Canadian Indigenous Students on the application form. Furthermore, there will also be a minimum of two awards made available to students working on community-based research projects that are within disciplines supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). To be considered eligible for this opportunity, applicants must confirm with their University of Manitoba professor that the research is community-based research within disciplines supported by SSHRC and indicate this by checking the appropriate box on the application form. Who is eligible? * Must be an undergraduate student at UM. * Must be enrolled in 24 credit hours at the time of the Voluntary Withdrawal deadline (Fall term 2023 and Winter term 2024) * Minimum GPA of 3.0, based on all credits completed at the time of application. * Cannot be held in conjunction with other competitive summer research awards such as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s Undergraduate Research Summer Award (NSERC USRA) * Students who will be graduating in the Spring of 2024 (May/June convocation) are not eligible for this award. * This award cannot be held more than twice by any recipient during their undergraduate program(s) at UM. * Students who hold a master’s degree are not eligible for this award. President Benarroch has indicated his interest in reappointment, and, pursuant to his agreement with the University, requested that the Board of Governors review his performance as President with a view to reappointment for a further term. In accordance with its governance practices, the Board of Governors has established a Presidential Review Committee. This Committee will review President Benarroch's performance and his vision for a further term, reporting to the Board of Governors with a recommendation on the reappointment of the President by March 19, 2024. The Board of Governors has requested that the Presidential Review Committee solicit informed feedback from members of the University Community, including students, with respect to the President's reappointment. Survey participants needed for research on food and nutrition security at the University of Manitoba

Hello! Faculty in the Food and Human Nutritional Sciences Department are conducting a research study to learn more about food and nutrition security among students at the University of Manitoba (UM). We are seeking current UM students with at least part-time status, who are at least 18 years old, and who currently live in Winnipeg to take our survey. You must also be able to read and write English. Your participation in this study will consist of one approximately 20-30 minute survey. Questions may include basic demographic information as well as information regarding household nutrition security, household resilience, food availability and utilization, among other topics. All survey respondents completing the survey between December 2023 - February 2024 will be eligible to receive one of 8 $100 Amazon electronic gift cards via random drawing in appreciation for participating. You may only complete the survey once. If you have previously completed this survey, you will be ineligible to participate. We would like to assure you that this research has been approved by the Research Ethics Board at the University of Manitoba, Fort Garry campus, and all data will be kept confidential by the research team. As a reminder, the University will be closed from 6 p.m. on December 22 until January 3, 2024, with classes beginning again on January 8. Students can access financial support in times of need, from the UM Food Bank to UM Emergency loans and other community resources. If you are struggling to make ends meet, know that there is help available for eligible students. Read on for important information about Waitlists over the Winter Holiday Waitlist notifications for Winter Term 2024 Please be advised that waitlist notifications for the Winter Term 2024 will not be issued during the Winter Holiday, from Thursday, December 21 at 12:00 p.m. to Monday, January 8 at 8:30 a.m. (CST). What this means to you: * If space becomes available in a course with a Waitlist, a Waitlist Notification will not be issued until notifications resume on January 8. * All waitlist positions will be maintained during the Winter Holiday. * Any student who receives a Waitlist Notification prior to Dec 21 at 12:00 pm CST will have the full 24-hour period to register. * Registration for courses will remain open during the Winter Holiday.
