The purpose of this channel is for students and staff to self identify that they are ill with influenza symptoms and that they are unable to come to work or school. Fall Term 2009 Revision Deadline Reminders

September 21, 2009 Registration Reminders for 2009-2010 . The last day to add Fall Term and Fall/Winter courses taught during the regular term schedule is Wednesday, September 23. Most students will register for courses through Aurora Student, but remember that if you are repeating a course you must seek approval from an advisor in your academic unit before registering. . The 50% refund of tuition fees on one term courses has been eliminated. Refer to the Refunds <http://umanitoba.ca/student/records/fees/829.htm> web page for details. The deadline to drop a Fall Term course with a full refund of tuition fees is Wednesday, September 23. You may drop Fall Term courses after this date, but you will receive no refund and the drop will appear on your record as a VW (Voluntary Withdrawal). The deadline to VW from Fall Term courses is Wednesday, November 18, 2009. Note that courses taught outside the standard term schedule will have different refund and withdrawal deadlines. Refer to the course outline or teaching unit for further information. . The UM will not cancel/de-register students from current term courses due to non-payment of fees. You are financially and academically responsible for all courses in which you are registered after the Revision deadline - September 23, 2009. Failure to pay for your courses will not result in a de-registration of courses in the current term. Students who fail to pay for courses will be placed on <http://umanitoba.ca/student/records/registration/steps/652.htm> Hold and will be de-registered from courses that begin in Winter Term. If you have registered and have changed your mind about attending, be sure to formally withdraw from courses through Aurora Student to avoid being held responsible for the associated fees. . Late this past Friday afternoon Winnipeg Police Service announced the arrest of two high school students on charges of conspiracy to commit murder. According to police, the two 17-year-olds had planned to target a number of public institutions, including two high schools, a local church and the University of Manitoba. Police have informed the University that the male and female teens were the sole individuals involved in the alleged plan, and that there was and is no risk to the University of Manitoba community as both individuals remain in custody. Winnipeg Police Service continues to work on the case and liaise directly with the University. The University of Manitoba takes this opportunity to remind our community that there are emergency notification procedures in place, including annunciator phones in classrooms, an emergency web site and text/phone messaging to students and staff. If you receive an emergency message via any of these means, please follow the instructions provided. Student Parking Update

For those who have not yet paid for their 2008-09 student parking permit, the payment deadline has been extended to FRIDAY, AUGUST 1. If payment is not received by the deadline your parking reservation will be cancelled. In-person payments by cash, cheque or money order are accepted at the Parking Office (125 University Centre). Office hours are weekdays from 8:00am to 4:30pm. If you would like to mail a cheque or money order, please make payable to THE UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA and send to: Parking and Shuttle Services, 125 University Centre, The University of Manitoba, Winnipeg MB R3T 2N2. Write your name, Student Number and vehicle license plate number on the back. Be sure to indicate it is your parking permit fee. Payment must be received by the Friday August 1 deadline. Please note we are unable to process payments by credit card, debit card, or post-dated cheque. Find your registration time on Aurora Student. Log in and select Enrolment & Academic Records. Select Registration and then Registration Time & Status. . Registration times were available on Aurora Student as of July 7. If you checked your time on July 7 or 8, please re-check your time as some registration times have since been corrected due to errors in the assignment of times. . On this page you can also check to see if: o You have any Holds that will prevent registration (including Advisor Holds for students in specific programs); o Your academic status prevents registration (e.g. academic suspension); o Your record is not currently active due to an absence from university. If you have a Hold that prevents registration, click the View Holds link at the bottom of the page to see what type of Hold has been applied. Note: if you have recently changed faculties and see that you have a Hold that is applicable to your old faculty, or if you have applied to graduate in October but are beginning a new program in September - contact a student advisor in your faculty to clear the Hold prior to registration. . Students in some faculties must declare a major, minor or concentration once a specified number of credits have been earned. Your record may have a registration Hold if this applies to you. . If you don't have a cell phone you can register another phone to receive a voice message. o UMEMERG registration is available on the Personal Information and Registration menus of Aurora Student. o UMEMERG will be used to send emergency messages only. . UMSU Health & Dental o If you have been approved by UMSU to opt out of the insurance plan, you are not required to include the premium amount in your fee payment to the university. Simply deduct the amount of the UMSU Health and Dental Insurance premium (see your Student Fee Account) from your term amount owing and pay the balance to the university. The UMSU Health and Dental premium amounts will be deducted from your Student Fee Account after the Fall Term revision deadline (September 17). o You may apply to opt out of UMSU Health and Dental insurance coverage online. Written English and Mathematics Courses: The following courses satisfy the Written English Requirement and not the Mathematics Requirement as stated in the paper Undergraduate Calendar, p. 29, Appendix A: GEOL 1410 Natural Disasters and Global Change, 3 Cr.Hrs GEOL 3130 Communication Methods in the Geological Sciences, 3 Cr.Hrs Both courses are offered through the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth and Resources. . In the Faculty of Pharmacy chapter, p. 437 of the paper Undergraduate Calendar, Section 5: Program Requirements, the total number of credit hours for First Year should be 33, making the total credit hours for all four years 140. . In the General Studies section of the Extended Education chapter, Section 4.1: Academic Assessment Policy indicated that academic regulations were under review. Please note the new regulations have been approved by Senate as described below. Registration times were available on Aurora Student as of July 7. If you checked your time on July 7 to 9, please re-check your time as some registration times have since been corrected due to errors in the assignment of times. . On this page you can also check to see if: o You have any Holds that will prevent registration (including Advisor Holds for students in specific programs); o Your academic status prevents registration (e.g. academic suspension); o Your record is not currently active due to an absence from university. If you have a Hold that prevents registration, click the View Holds link at the bottom of the page to see what type of Hold has been applied. Simply register your cell phone to receive emergency messages as text messages. If you don't have a cell phone you can register another phone to receive a voice message. o UMEMERG registration is available on the Personal Information and Registration menus of Aurora Student. o UMEMERG will be used to send emergency messages only. . UMSU Health & Dental o If you have been approved by UMSU to opt out of the insurance plan, you are not required to include the premium amount in your fee payment to the university. Simply deduct the amount of the UMSU Health and Dental Insurance premium (see your Student Fee Account) from your term amount owing and pay the balance to the university. The UMSU Health and Dental premium amounts will be deducted from your Student Fee Account after the Fall Term revision deadline (September 17). o You may apply to opt out of UMSU Health and Dental insurance coverage online. China Earthquake Relief

This message is being sent on behalf of the Office of the President. Dear Colleagues: I am writing in the aftermath of the recent earthquake in China, to ask for your assistance, and to advise you of the initiatives the broader Chinese community of Winnipeg is undertaking to help the survivors of this tragedy. As many of you are aware, an earthquake of magnitude 8.0 - first reported as 7.8 - hit the province of Sichuan, China, on Monday, May 12. As of May 19, the death toll had reached 34,000 and more than 250,000 were injured. These numbers are expected to rise rapidly in the days to come. Beichuan, a small town at the epicenter of the earthquake, was flattened in seconds. Thousands of students lost their lives in school on that Monday afternoon. The devastation and deaths are of such magnitude that the Government of China has declared three days of national mourning, the first ever in the Chinese history. We have all read stories of natural disasters and sometimes it is hard to comprehend destruction and devastation that is located far away. For many of our students, faculty and staff, however, this tragedy is all too real. Sichuan Province is home to many international students at the University of Manitoba, and several of our professors have their hometowns within 200 km of the epicenter. Furthermore Sichuan University is a sister university of the University of Manitoba, and Winnipeg is a sister city of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province. Dr. Feiyue Wang, a member of our Department of Environment and Geography as well as the Department of Chemistry, and Chair of the Manitoba Chinese Tribune, has advised me that the Chinese and Chinese-Canadian communities of Winnipeg are co-coordinating efforts to provide care and support to the victims of this earthquake. A major benefit performance is planned for May 25 at the Canad Inns - Polo Park. I am attaching the poster describing this event for your information. Your attendance would be most appreciated. If you would like to make a donation, please make your cheque payable to the Canadian Red Cross, earmarked "China Earthquake". You may drop the cheque at the event venue, or at the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre, or mail it directly to the Canadian Red Cross National Office, 170 Metcalfe, Suite 300, Ottawa, ON K2P, 2P2. Reminder: The Voluntary Withdrawal Deadline for Winter Term 2008 and Fall/Winter 2007/2008 (spanned) courses is Thursday, March 20. You can withdraw from classes through Aurora Student. Students who are on Hold due to outstanding tuition, library books, parking fines, etc. must obtain assistance from a student advisor in their academic unit or the Registrar's Office. Summer Session registration commences the week of March 24 to March 28. Students will be assigned one day during this week in which to register. Each day during this first week of registration an equal number of spaces are released to the registration system. There is no advantage to students who are assigned a registration day that is earlier in the week. Beginning Monday, March 31 all students may register. Some faculties have courses with irregular withdrawal dates; see your faculty general office for information. Note: The deadline to VW courses that span Fall/Winter 2007/2008 is March 20, 2008. Students on HOLD will be unable to use the registration functions in Aurora to drop a class. If you are on HOLD and unable to withdraw through Aurora, please contact your faculty office by 4:00 PM on Wednesday November 14th for assistance. Your faculty office will withdraw you from the class on request. UPGRADE TO AURORA SYSTEM There will be a scheduled upgrade to Aurora services during the period November 16 to 20. The online application for undergraduate admission service will be unavailable for the period of 12:01 AM November 16 until 8:30 AM November 20. During this time, students may still download paper applications at www.umanitoba.ca/applynow. All other Aurora self-services, including student registration, will be unavailable from noon on November 16 until 8:30 AM on November 20. Staff INB services will also be unavailable during this time. Strike action by CAW staff began today Wednesday, October 10. The CAW includes 480 physical plant staff (caretakers, maintenance, trades, etc.), food service and residence personnel. The University will continue to operate as normal to the extent possible. Classes will continue as scheduled. The libraries will remain open. Students have the right to choose whether or not to cross the picket line. The University will make efforts to reasonably accommodate the student to ensure that the student is not discriminated against as a result of their decision. However, students are responsible for materials covered in class. These students should contact their instructors to discuss reasonable accommodation. All parties, including employees on strike and individuals crossing picket lines, are responsible for refraining from illegal behaviour. Please exercise patience and caution in crossing picket lines. Picket line activity will be video taped and recorded for safety and security purposes and will be made available to Winnipeg Police Service, if necessary. If difficulties are experienced crossing the picket line please contact Security Services at 474-9312. Rogers and MTS Mobility cellular customers can also reach Security Services by dialing #555. Food Services will be reduced, however some locations will remain open as identified below. Students are encouraged to bring their own lunch during the strike. Winnipeg Transit will operate and have indicated that they will cross the picket line. However, staff and students are encouraged to allow extra time to get to work and classes. TO ALL STUDENTS AND STAFF The University and CAW have been bargaining since September 24th in an effort to reach a new Collective Agreement. On October 3, 2007 the University applied for conciliation when negotiations reached an impasse. The CAW membership voted in favour of establishing a strike deadline of midnight Tuesday, October 9, 2007. Should negotiations be unsuccessful in reaching a collective agreement by that date, strike action by CAW staff could take place as early as Wednesday, October 10. The CAW represents approximately 480 University employees in the maintenance trades, powerhouse, general services (truck deliveries, snow clearing, garbage pick up, etc.), grounds, caretaking, residences and food services. In the event of a strike, the University will continue normal operations to the extent possible. Although a CAW labour action may have some impact on aspects of University operations, it is not expected to have a direct impact on the delivery of academic programs. In the event of a strike the following standard employment procedures apply: 1. During a strike all employees have a legal right to work: * All employees have a legal right to cross a picket line and come to work. * Those employees on strike may choose to come to work or not come to work. * Those employees not on strike, including those employees covered by collective agreements other than CAW agreement and excluded employees, have a legal right to work as well as an obligation to come to work. 2. Employees who do not come to work will not be paid and may be subject to discipline. 3. Any picket line incidents or problems should be reported immediately to the University Security Services (474-9312). Rogers and MTS Mobility cellular customers can also reach Security by dialing #555. In the event of a strike, students should be aware of the following: 1. Classes, lectures and labs will continue as scheduled unless otherwise announced. 2. Libraries will remain open. 3. Winnipeg Transit and the University shuttle bus will continue to operate. 4. Some services around campus (eg. Food Services, custodial) will be reduced. Should a strike occur, more information will be made available. 5. Winnipeg Police Service is investigating this incident. According to the Winnipeg Police Service, the situation is isolated to the University of Winnipeg. Although no connection has been made to the University of Manitoba, the University reminds its faculty, staff, and students to remain aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious persons and/or criminal offences occurring on University of Manitoba property to Security Services at 474-9312. Patrol Officers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and offer a variety of community services including Safewalk, Non Violent Crisis Intervention Training, Rape Aggression Defence (R.A.D.), and presentations regarding office and personal safety. Registration Notes for 2007-2008 Check your Registration Time & Status Registration is just around the corner. Registration times for returning U of M students begin July 23. If you have not already done so, check for your registration time through Aurora Student. . Select Enrolment & Academic Records>Registration> select the Term Fall 2007 or Winter 2008, then Registration Time & Status. Your registration time will be displayed on this page. You should have the same registration time for both Fall 2007 and Winter 2008. . Please check the Curriculum Information lower down the page. If this program is not the program you intend to register in, please contact your intended faculty. Your registration time may need to be adjusted. . If you have a Hold or Academic Status (such as Suspension) that prevents registration, this will also be noted. If you have been away for awhile and your account has been inactivated as a result, this will also be noted. . If you see that you have a Hold that prevents registration, click View Holds at the bottom of the page for details. Note that Honours and Major students in the Faculty of Science and the Riddell Faculty must have their program approved by their faculty advisor prior to registration. . Laboratory Fees The University of Manitoba has introduced a lab fee for all course sections that include a laboratory component. Three types of lab sections have been identified: . Wet/Bench Labs will be assessed a fee of $30.00 per term for sections that are 3 to 5 credit hours. . Dry Labs /Tutorials and Language Labs will be assessed a fee of $25.00 per term for sections that are 3 to 5 credit hours. Lab Fees are in the process of being set up on applicable course sections. If the fee is in place at the time of registration you will be assessed immediately. Please check your fee statement prior to the fee payment deadline for any Lab Fees that may have been assessed after you had registered. Note that Lab Fees are refundable only up to the Revision Deadline for the applicable term. You may view the Lab Fees attached to a specific course section in the Class Schedule - Detailed Class Information. To view Detailed Class Information in Class Schedule click on the Course Title- CRN- Section Number link. If a Lab Fee has been applied it will appear under the heading: Base Fees (other charges may apply) UMSU Health Dental Plan changes The University of Manitoba Students Union (UMSU) Health & Dental Plan is a group benefit approved by students in a referendum in 2002. Since that time, the university has supported the administration of the plan and continues to do so. All students taking 6 credit hours or more for the Fall Term (excluding Distance Education and Off Campus courses) are automatically enrolled in the plan. The plan fee is $226.55 per year (for 12 months of coverage), though students may add their family (spouse and dependants) for an additional fee of $343.85. Students who have suitable alternate coverage may apply to UMSU to opt out of the plan. Details of the plan and opt-out deadlines are available online, at the UMSU Health and Dental Office in 110 University Centre or by calling 204.474.6666. In an effort to provide information to the insurance provider that is both timely and accurate and to ensure that students have suitable coverage when needed, administration of the opt out process has been changed, effective Fall 2007. The plan premium must be paid to the university, regardless of whether or not you are planning to opt out. If your opt-out application is approved, you will be issued a refund of the Health and Dental Insurance fee directly from UMSU. Go to UMSU.ca for more information on UMSU Health and Dental Insurance and to access the opt-out application form (available in August). Note: Band sponsored students will initially be assessed the UMSU Health & Dental Fee. The fee will be removed from your student account before invoices are sent to Band sponsors. Credit Hours needed per term to be considered Full Time Undergraduates Full Time Status is determined on a per term basis. To be considered full time, most undergraduate students must be enroled in at least 60% of a full course load for the program in which they are registered. For example, in a program in which the normal full load for a Fall/Winter Session is 30 credit hours, full time status is based on 60% of a full term load of 15 credit hours. In this example a student would need to be registered in a minimum of 9 credit hours in a term to be considered full time for that term. As the course load varies between years within a program, faculties have determined a minimum number of credit hours required for each term applicable to all years for specific programs. If you are uncertain of the number of credit hours required to be full time in a term in your program, please consult a Student Advisor in your faculty. Graduate Students Note that, with the exception of students in programs in which fees are assessed on a per credit hour basis (MBA, MPA, Social Work by Dist Ed, Occasional, Pre-Masters), graduate level students are considered full time, unless approved by the department and the Faculty of Graduate Studies for part time study. Students in the programs noted above will be assessed as full time or part time by the rules used for undergraduate students described above (i.e based on registered credit hours.) Information about Official University of Manitoba Transcripts and GPA calculations... Due to the Aurora student information system implementation, official transcripts issued for the past few months have not included Fall 2006 enrolment information. Registration verifications, issued along with official transcripts, provided certification of current enrolment. The Registration verifications also included final grades reported for Fall 2006. Effective immediately, official transcripts now include academic activity that is tracked in the Aurora system. Below is information that will help you understand how your academic activity will be reported and how grade point averages are calculated on the official transcript. Please note that transcripts may be ordered in-person at the Registrars Office, by fax or by mail. Processing time for all transcripts (pick-ups and mail-outs), is two working days. For further information, please refer to the Registrars Office website at: umanitoba.ca/registrar. * Students who studied before September 2006 only will receive a transcript using the old format (see Old Transcript below). * Students whose study began September 2006 and later will receive a transcript using the new format (see New Transcript below). * Students who have studied at the University of Manitoba both before and after September 2006 will receive a two part transcript. * Part 1 will follow the old format (Old Transcript) and will report work completed before September 2006. * Part 2 will follow the new format (New Transcript) and report U of M courses completed September 2006 and onwards, all courses transferred from external institutions, and credit hours and grade points for all courses, including courses completed prior to September 2006. See below for an explanation of grade point average calculations. Course Numbers and Titles Old Transcript Courses identified with department code, an abbreviated course title, and a numeric department number and a three digit course number. e.g PSY INTRODUCTION 17.120 New Transcript Courses are identified with a subject code of up to four characters and four digit course number, along with the full title. Note: courses that span over two terms are listed as two course sections, Part A and Part B. Students who complete a course that spans over both terms will be assigned the same grade for both parts and only when Part B has been completed. e.g PSYC 1200 Introduction to Psychology (Part A) PSYC 1200 Introduction to Psychology (Part B) Level of Study Old Transcript: All levels of study are reported in session sequence. New Transcript Transcript and page numbering is organized by level of study. Work completed within a specific level is reported on the applicable section of the transcript. * Cumulative grade point averages are calculated by level * Previous degrees awarded are reported by level. i.e. Undergraduate degrees awarded are reported on the undergraduate section of the transcript. * Levels of Study: Undergraduate, Graduate, Post Graduate Medical Education Repeat Rule Old Transcript Course repeats are calculated according to faculty rules. Some faculties counted all grades, some counted the highest grades, and some counted the last grade. New Transcript When a course has been repeated, only the last grade is calculated in the grade point average and towards Passed, Earned and GPA hours. All course attempts are counted towards Attempted Hours. Repeated courses that have been excluded from GPA calculations are indicated with an E. Manually included courses are indicated with an I. * Note that indirect transfer credit (unallocated) may be marked with I (included), as students may have more than one credit in a subject area with the same courses number. e.g. ECON 2XXX Transfer Credit 2000 level Grade Point Averages Old Transcript Weighted Grade Points (Weighted GP) The value of the grade assigned multiplied by the credit hour value of the course. e.g.B (3 grade points) x 3 credit hours = 9 Weighted Grade Points New Transcript QualityPoints (QPts) The value of the grade assigned multiplied by the credit hour value of the course. e.g.B (3 grade points) x 3 credit hours = 9 Quality Points Hours Old Transcript Sessional:all credit hours completed within a session, Regular or Summer Cumulative:all credit hours acceptable for credit towards or transferred towards the current faculty. New Transcript AttemptedHours: all courses completed within a level of study. PassedHours: all courses completed within a level of study with a grade of D or better, subject to the Repeat rule. EarnedHours: all courses completed within a level of study, subject to the Repeat rule. GPA Hours: all courses completed within a level of study, subject to the Repeat rule, excluding courses with grades that do not carry a grade point value; e.g. courses graded Pass or Fail. GradePoint Average Calculations Old Transcript WeightGrade Points divided by Hours (sessional or cumulative as defined above). New Transcript GradePoint Average (GPA) Calculation Total Quality Points divided by total GPA hours Term Grade Point Average (TGPA) The grade point average of all courses completed within a given term of study, subject to the Repeat Rule, excluding courses with grades that do not carry a grade point value. Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) The grade point average of all courses completed within a level of study, subject to the Repeat Rule, excluding courses with grades that do not carry a grade point value. Note: The CGPA for students who have academic history before and after September 2006 will include all work completed at and transferred to the U of M, subject to the institutional rule on repeated courses. Due to the change in definition of the cumulative average, this CGPA may differ from the CGPA reported on Part 1 of the transcript. Degree Grade Point Average (DGPA) The grade point average of all courses acceptable for credit in the current degree program, subject to the Repeat rule, excluding courses with grades that do not carry a grade point value. DGPA will be reported for graduates after degrees have been awarded in February 2007. Note:DGPA is not reported for degrees awarded prior to February 2007. For degrees awarded prior to February 2007, please refer to the CGPA reported on the Old Transcript for the grade point average on courses applicable to the degree. Note:DGPA for programs in progress are not currently reported. Faculties are in the process of verifying the courses that contribute toward the DGPA. DGPA will be reported as of April 2007. U of M Security Services safety alert

In the late afternoon on Monday, Dec. 11, 2007, on City of Wpg property, Ross Ave and HSC Parkade, two armed robberies occurred. One involved a U of M Student and the other a U of M Staff member. No one was injured. Culprits are described as 2 males, caucasian, wearing black clothing, early twenties, and produced a handgun. They demanded money. No one was injured and suspects fled on foot. Wpg Police are investigating and has increased patrols in the area. UM Campus Security has doubled the patrol strength at the Bannatyne Campus and have a patrol vehicle present for Safewalks/drives. Once further information has been obtained this list will be advised. Registrar's Office Bulletiin - Important Information for All Students

To all students, thank you for your patience during the introduction of the Aurora Student system. While I believe many students had a very positive first experience with the new system, some students experienced difficulties in registration and fee assessment and may have experienced delays in seeking assistance. Please accept our apologies for this and know that university staff has worked very hard to provide the assistance you need. Please read the important information below regarding prerequisite checking; repeats and equivalent courses, and how these affect your grade point averages; and withdrawing from courses while on hold. Reminder: Revision deadline for Fall Term and Fall/Winter Term courses is September 20 (12 midnight). * Last day to add Fall Term or Fall/Winter Term courses * Last day to drop a Fall Term or Fall/Winter Term course and receive a full refund on tuition. Do you have the Prerequisites for your Classes? During the recent registration period you were permitted to register in courses provisionally if you were enrolled in the prerequisite course during Summer Session or if you had only interim high school grades on your record. As well, although the Aurora system was set up to check for prerequisites, in the case of some courses students may have been permitted to register without the published prerequisite. Faculties and schools responsible for teaching your courses may be checking to ensure that students have the appropriate prerequisite grades and may withdraw students who do not meet published requirements. It is your responsibility to be aware of and meet course prerequisites. If the faculty responsible for teaching your courses does not remove students who do not meet prerequisites, students who choose to remain in affected courses do so at their own risk. Withdrawal after September 20 from courses for which you do not have the prerequisite will be subject to the published deadlines and rules for fee refund and voluntary withdrawal. If you are unsure of your course prerequisites, please consult the Aurora Student catalog of courses or discuss this matter with your faculty student advisor. Are you repeating a course? Please be reminded that the University of Manitoba has introduced two new rules with respect to repeated courses. First, the grade that will count toward your cumulative grade point average (cgpa) and your degree grade point average (dgpa) is the grade from the last attempt. * Note: This policy affects calculation of the cgpa and dgpa, but does not change the calculation methods normally used for admission purposes. You must consult the Admission Application Information for the faculty or school you will be applying to to determine how repeated courses are treated for admissions purposes. * For information on how this policy affects your past grade point averages consult the Registrars Office website at umanitoba.ca/registrar > Transcripts and Verifications > Pre and Post September 2006 Transcripts Second, there is a new limit on the number of times you may repeat a course. You may now repeat a course only once for credit. * If you have taken a course more than once in the past, you may have been granted permission to take the course once more this year. * This limit applies to courses that are equivalent. E.g. MATH 1500 and MATH 1510 are different versions of introductory Calculus, but are considered equivalents and are counted as repeats. * If a course description states that the course may not be held with another, this means they are considered repeats. Is a course you are taking equivalent to another you have taken? As stated above, some courses overlap content and, although they are offered under different titles and course numbers, they are considered equivalents. In this first registration period, the Aurora system was unable to block registrations in some equivalent courses. Regardless of whether the system was able to block registrations, such courses are still considered equivalent and you will only be able to hold credit in your program for one of these credits. As these courses are considered repeats, the credit and grade form the last attempt will be the one that counts. This attempt will also count as your last allowable attempt in the course content. Read the Calendar Course Description To ensure that you are taking courses that you are academically prepared to take and that fit into your current program, please refer the course descriptions in the printed 2006-2007 Undergraduate or Graduate Calendar, or check the course description online in the Aurora Student Catalog of Courses. Withdrawal while on hold. Aurora Student will not permit a student to withdraw a course while you are on hold. If you are on hold and must drop one or more of your courses, please contact the Registrars Office or the Cashiers Office. The hold will be temporarily lifted to permit the course withdrawal. Bulletin #3: Registration Times; Your Records in Aurora Student; New Registrar's Office Website Aurora Student its all coming together Aurora Student, the University of Manitobas new student information system, is now active. This system will offer many services to students related to academic activity (e.g. registration, grades, fee statements) and replaces MyUMinfo Web Services, which be taken off-line at the end of the summer. Aurora Student is available now for you to find your registration time. Go the University of Manitoba homepage at umanitoba.ca. Click on the link to Aurora Student. Click on Enter Secure Area. To sign in, use the same ID (your student number) and PIN that you used in MyUMinfo. If you have trouble with your PIN, call the Registrars Office at 204-474-9420. Once you are signed in, click on Registration, then Registration Time and Status. You will see the date on which you can start registering for courses. All times start at 8:30 a.m. Once in, you can access the system again to continue your registration anytime, 24/7. If you intend to Transit from University 1 to Arts or Science, declare a major, declare graduation, or join a College, please check back on the week of July 10. The process of moving the academic records for all active students into Aurora Student is underway. This is a complicated process that is being done in several stages. When you go to Aurora Student for the first time, you may not be able to view your academic records. We are in the process of moving this information from the old system to Aurora Student. Please be patient. All records will be completed soon. Check back in the week of July 10 or after if you wish to view your academic records in Aurora Student. In the meantime, if you would like to view a full record of your completed study at the U of M go to MyUMInfo Web Services. This system will be available until the end of the summer. Note that all previous courses and grades have been moved to your new Aurora Student record, so you shouldnt have problems with prerequisites when registering for courses. However, if you encounter unexpected problems with your registration, such as a prerequisite error, please contact your faculty or school general office for assistance. New Registrars Office Website - umanitoba.ca/registrar Check out our new website for information on the new Aurora Student information system and how this system will be used to view academic records, and for registration and other academic activity. BULLETIN #2: Signing in to Aurora Student and determining your registration time Aurora Student may be accessed on the University of Manitoba homepage at umanitoba.ca as of July 4, 2006. Look for Aurora Student in the Student Links area. In addition to the information below and in other bulletins, you may also obtain information on using Aurora Student on the Registrars Office website on or after July 4. Look for this website under the Current Students tab on the U of M homepage. Signing in to Aurora Student To sign in to Aurora Student, click on Enter Secure Area. You will be required to enter a User ID and PIN. Your User ID is your Student Number. As a returning University of Manitoba student, you will continue to use the student number assigned to you at admission. Your student number is recorded on your Student ID card. You will use the same PIN that you used the last time you contacted UMREG or MyUMInfo. If you have difficulty with your PIN, call the Registrars Office at (204) 474 9420 for help. You are Responsible for your PIN Keep your PIN number confidential. You are responsible for all activity that takes place with the use of your Student Number and PIN. You can change your PIN again, and as often as you wish, through Aurora Student. Go to Personal Information and select Change PIN. PIN Security Question The first time you sign in to Aurora Student you will be prompted to set up a PIN Security Question and Answer. This question and answer will be used to recover a forgotten PIN during future sign ins. Be sure to select a question and answer that is personal and will not be known to others. Hint: The security questions must be answered letter for letter (if you type "daisy" as your answer, the response "daisies" will be incorrect. Registration Access Times Once your Registration Time starts, youll continue to have access to the registration system for the remainder of the registration period. The system is open 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. Most returning students will register on or after July 24. Determine your Registration Time though Aurora Students Registration link on or after July 4, 2006. Go to Aurora Student (through the link on the U of Ms homepage at umanitoba.ca) then select Enrolment and Academic Records, then Registration, and then Registration Time and Status. On this page you can also check to see if there are any holds that may prevent registration, that your program is listed correctly, and that your student status permits registration. If your program is listed incorrectly, or if your student status does not permit registration, please contact your faculty or school general office. BULLETIN #1: New Terms, Subject Codes and Catalog Searches The self-service area of Aurora Student will be available July 4, and through it, you will be able to access and update personal information, register for courses, and obtain fee statements, grades and more. Watch for more information on the Registrars Office website later this month. The online Calendar (rules, regulations and program requirements), the Course Catalog (course descriptions) and the Class Schedule (course times and locations) are currently available through umanitoba.ca. Use the Calendar to learn about rules, regulations and program information. The Class Schedule is at the moment preliminary. Most courses are now entered on the schedule. Additional information, such as section comments, will be entered by the end of June. Whats New New Term Structure Starting this September, Regular Session for most students will be split into two Terms: Fall 2006 and Winter 2007. When you register, or search for classes in the Course Catalog or Class Schedule, youll need to search each Term (in which you want to take courses) in order to see the complete course offerings. If you want to see whats available in January, select Winter 2007. If youre a Dentistry student, select Bannatyne Undergrad 2006-2007. New Subject Codes in Course Numbers Courses in Aurora Student are identified with a subject code, not a department number. For example, 017.120 is now PSYC 1200. This means you will need a subject code for each of your Catalog and Schedule searches. The drop down menus on the online Course Catalog and Class Schedule include the names of the Subject areas, so you wont need to know the codes, but because some departments have divided their courses into several subjects, you may need assistance in identifying the subject area you want. For example, the department of French, Spanish and Italian (044) now offer their courses as French (FREN), Spanish (SPAN), or Italian (ITAL). A complete list of Subject areas, organized by faculty and department, and also offered alphabetically is available on the Calendar main page. Hint: If you would like to search for courses in more than one subject at once, while searching the Course Catalog or the Class Schedule, press and hold the Control or Command key while selecting subjects you wish to include in your search. New Ways to Search the Course Catalog and Class Schedule The main change you will see in the online Catalog and Schedule will be the course search tools: * If you want to see course descriptions, search the Aurora Course Catalog. * If you want to see the course offering for the coming year, search the Aurora Class Schedule. Note: Although the Catalog and Schedule went live on the web in early May 2006, they are still in development. You will see changes to these functions over the next month that will improve ease of navigation. Searching the Course Catalog 1. Select the Term you want to search. 2. Select a Subject Area (and any other option you want to include in your search). Notes: - Courses displayed in search results may include courses offered in Fall 2006 AND Winter 2007. - Only courses which are offered during the Term you selected will have an active web link to the Class Schedule. If you want to see courses in another Term, youll need to perform another search using that Term. - You MUST include a Subject in each search. Searching the Class Schedule 1. Select the Term you want to search. 2. Select a Subject Area (and any other parameter you want to search). Note: - Terms in Schedule are currently marked view only. Once your registration period starts, you will be able to select courses and register through the schedule. - Only courses offered in the Term you selected will be displayed. - You MUST include a Subject in each search. You are eligible to nominate your favourite professor or instructor for these awards if you are graduating this May or have already graduated from a previous University of Manitoba program in the last three years. Next select the '2005 taxation year' from the drop down menu. There is no need to reply. _______________________________________________________________________ The University of Manitoba central computing system and network services will be unavailable on Sunday, July 13, 2003, between 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. to allow for electrical power changes in the central computer room. UofM e-mail, dial-up connections, and the entire UofM website and associated services such as WebCT and library databases will be unavailable. Login and file servers for Novell and Unix systems will be down so the ACN student computer labs on campus will not be usable. Independent computer systems such as those operated by Computer Science, Physics, and Engineering should continue to function normally. A Bulk Mail filter on central University mail will go into effect Monday March 24. Your participation is needed to ensure you do not lose any subscriptions or other bulk mail you've requested. ---- In an effort to reduce the amount of spam, IST is pleased to announce that a bulk mail filter (DCC) will be activated on the University's central mail servers, cc.umanitoba.ca and ms.umanitoba.ca, as of Monday, March 24. To read more about the bulk mail filter, you can start from the ACN home page at: http://umanitoba.ca/acn and under "IST/ACN Computing News" click on "Bulk Mail Blocking - AVOID LOSING MAIL" You can check your bulk mail summaries on a web page or have them mailed to you each week. Both methods are available at: http://umanitoba.ca/acn/spam Presentations are being scheduled over the next two weeks on the bulk mail filtering and white list.
