Knowing that this can be a stressful time, I would like to share some information about resources and supports that you may find helpful over the next two weeks. As you prepare for your exams, I encourage you to access the Content and Study Skills tutors<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/academic-supports/academic-learning/t…> at the Academic Learning Centre (ALC). They continue to hold one-to-one appointments throughout the exam period. Various other resources are offered through the ALC<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/academic-supports/academic-learning/t…>, such as Writing tutors and specialized supports for graduate students. Academic Advisors<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/academic-supports/academic-advising> are also available to you until the last day of exams on December 20. Often a key part of exam preparation is finding a study space<https://news.umanitoba.ca/finding-space-to-study/> that works for you. If you are in need of a space, UM Libraries<https://umanitoba.ca/libraries/help-and-services/get-help> are open and you can find their hours, study space options<https://news.umanitoba.ca/finding-space-to-study/>, and information about their satellite locations on their website. We recognize that for some students, personal circumstances necessitate studying during non-traditional hours. A dedicated quiet space with on-site staff has been designated for studying throughout the period December 9 at 8:00 a.m. - December 20 at 4:30 p.m. in the St. John's College Library, 3rd floor, St. John's College. The SJC Library accommodates 55 students, and will be available on a first come, first served basis. UM student ID must be presented to gain entry to the space outside regular hours (weekdays from 8 p.m. - 8 a.m. and all day on weekends). Prioritizing your well-being during this intense period of academic study is vitally important. Fall 2024 Final Exam Period approaching The Fall 2024 Final Exam period runs from December 10 - 20, 2024. Plan your arrival: Make sure you have a plan to get to campus early in case transport does not go as planned. Check out the classroom in which your exam is taking place in advance! 1. Supplies: Ensure you have the necessary writing utensils and some extras! Students must ensure that all items required for the examination are placed on top of the desk prior to the start of the examination. 1. Attendance & identification: Students must display their UM student ID card or government issued photo identification (such as a passport or driver's license) and are required to sign an attendance form. 1. Arriving late: * Students who arrive more than 30 minutes after the start of the examination will not be permitted to write the examination. * Students who arrive less than 30 minutes late, will be permitted to write the examination, but must stop writing at the end of the scheduled exam time. * Students are not permitted to enter the examination room after at least one other student who is writing the same examination has left the examination room. * If you are late and not permitted to write an examination, you will be asked to complete the appropriate form by an invigilator and will then be advised to contact the Office of your Dean or Director no later than the next business day to discuss possible alternatives. 1. Illness/ emergency during your exam: If you become ill or receives word of a family emergency during the course of an examination and are unable to continue, you must report at once to the Head Invigilator, hand in the examination, and indicate either that you wish to submit your examination paper as: (1) completed; or (2) not completed and with the right to request a deferred examination. 1. Leaving the exam: * Students are not permitted to leave the examination room during the first thirty (30) minutes of an examination. * Students are not permitted to re-enter an examination room until all examination scripts have been collected. ________________________________ Unauthorized materials in exams Students are not permitted to access any unauthorized materials during an examination. This includes but is not limited to calculators, books, notes, pencil cases, or any electronic device capable of wireless communication and/or storing information. Follow-Up on Campus Safety Incident

[University of Manitoba Banner with University of Manitoba logo] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor and Dr. Diane Hiebert-Murphy, Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Dear UM community, The University of Manitoba is committed to supporting the safety of our campus community, and we acknowledge the distress caused to some by yesterday's events. Please understand, that as this is an ongoing police investigation, we are limited in our ability to comment on the matter, however we can provide the following update. UM Security immediately responded to the incident reported early yesterday morning, working closely with Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) to assess and address appropriately. As with any report of a potential threat to campus safety, our first priority is to secure impacted areas. UM sent out information through multiple channels including the campus loudspeaker, UM's social media channels, umanitoba.ca, email, and UM Learn. Out of an abundance of caution and to support the WPS response efforts, UM made the decision to cancel in-person classes and exams on the Fort Garry Campus for the remainder of the day. We are aware of concerns that information was not shared quickly enough. As with any event of this nature, we will review the effectiveness and efficiency of our relevant protocols to ensure our processes align with our commitment to a safe and supportive environment. In their afternoon press conference on November 19, WPS reported that there were "no injuries" and said, "we don't have any information right now that would bring us to believe that someone was assaulted." We continue to take this matter seriously and are cooperating fully with authorities on this ongoing investigation. We recognize that incidents like these can cause stress and anxiety for some members of our community, especially in the context of recent events. Fort Garry Campus threat has been resolved

The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) is now reporting the following: The incident at the University of Manitoba (Fort Garry Campus) has been resolved. It has been determined that there is no imminent threat to public safety. The Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate this matter. We thank you for your patience and cooperation. All regular campus activity should proceed. In-person classes and exams will resume tomorrow, as planned. Communications to students will follow regarding the rescheduling of classes and exams.

Mario Pinto, Vice-President (Research and International) [A blue background with white text Description automatically generated] Dear UM Community, I’m pleased to share with you Change Through Research: University of Manitoba Strategic Research Plan 2024-2029<https://umanitoba.ca/research/strategic-research-plan>. This bold plan outlines our key areas of expertise for maximum impact by providing solutions to society’s most pressing challenges. The plan outlines seven themes that will guide UM research over the next five-year period: * Foundations * Social Justice and Human Rights * Research by, for, and with Indigenous Peoples * Water and Food Security * Health and Well-Being * Climate Action and Sustainability * Manitoba, Hudson Bay, Arctic and the World These interconnected themes will promote the overarching mission of transforming research culture, advancing understanding and creating positive societal impact. We have set ambitious goals to position UM researchers as leaders in new and critical areas, including being in the Top 200 in the world and the Top 10 in Canada in the Center for World University Rankings, in the top 251-300 in the Times Higher Education Rankings and in the top 100 in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. UM will make any necessary repairs to the landscaping in order to return the Quad to the community for regular use. UM leadership is committed to supporting a welcoming campus environment for all students and community members. We respect the right to peaceful assembly in ways that do not infringe upon the right to access public space by other student groups or impede the functioning of the university, including unauthorized occupation of university property. As we move forward, we remind everyone to demonstrate kindness and compassion with one another, and to appreciate the diversity of our community. Informed by community consultations and MOMENTUM: Leading Change Together 2024-2029<https://umanitoba.ca/strategic-plan>, this draft framework outlines the vision, mission and shared values, which has guided the Reconciliation Advisory Committee in its work. Before the Reconciliation Advisory Committee moves forward with presenting the final framework to Senate and the Board of Governors for approval, we invite you to read and share your feedback on this important document. This framework will guide our shared work over the next five years. We want to ensure that it resonates and that the diversity of voices and perspectives that strengthen our UM community are reflected in the framework.
