At 8 p.m., they’ll tip off against the twelfth-ranked University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves. The winner gets one step closer to earning the championship banner for their school in the semi-final games on Saturday, February 24. [Image] This message is sent on behalf of The Office of the Vice-President (Research and International) Re: VPRI Undergraduate Research Award (URA) Opportunities Dear University of Manitoba Undergraduate Students: Wondering what to do in the summer of 2024? Why not experience research with a professor at your own university! Professors at the University of Manitoba, through their work, are contributing to the cultural, economic, health, and social well-being of citizens of Manitoba, Canada, and the world. By tackling challenging and complex issues and topics, they strive to make our lives better and more meaningful, bringing insight to all. UM Professors collectively draw in nearly $220 million from external sources to the University, on a competitive basis, to support their research, scholarly work, and creative activities, and to nurture young minds to become trailblazers, pioneers, and innovators. About the Undergraduate Research Award The award provides the opportunity for you to be mentored by a professor of your choice for 16 weeks (between May–August 2024) and gain valuable experience in your field of interest. Recipients also receive a $7000 award. Of the many awards available, at least 10% of these awards will be made available to students who self-declare as Canadian Indigenous Students on the application form. Furthermore, there will also be a minimum of two awards made available to students working on community-based research projects that are within disciplines supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). To be considered eligible for this opportunity, applicants must confirm with their University of Manitoba professor that the research is community-based research within disciplines supported by SSHRC and indicate this by checking the appropriate box on the application form. Who is eligible? * Must be an undergraduate student at UM. * Must be enrolled in 24 credit hours at the time of the Voluntary Withdrawal deadline (Fall term 2023 and Winter term 2024) * Minimum GPA of 3.0, based on all credits completed at the time of application. * Cannot be held in conjunction with other competitive summer research awards such as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s Undergraduate Research Summer Award (NSERC USRA) * Students who will be graduating in the Spring of 2024 (May/June convocation) are not eligible for this award. * This award cannot be held more than twice by any recipient during their undergraduate program(s) at UM. * Students who hold a master’s degree are not eligible for this award. President Benarroch has indicated his interest in reappointment, and, pursuant to his agreement with the University, requested that the Board of Governors review his performance as President with a view to reappointment for a further term. In accordance with its governance practices, the Board of Governors has established a Presidential Review Committee. This Committee will review President Benarroch's performance and his vision for a further term, reporting to the Board of Governors with a recommendation on the reappointment of the President by March 19, 2024. Survey participants needed for research on food and nutrition security at the University of Manitoba

Hello! Faculty in the Food and Human Nutritional Sciences Department are conducting a research study to learn more about food and nutrition security among students at the University of Manitoba (UM). We are seeking current UM students with at least part-time status, who are at least 18 years old, and who currently live in Winnipeg to take our survey. You must also be able to read and write English. Your participation in this study will consist of one approximately 20-30 minute survey. Questions may include basic demographic information as well as information regarding household nutrition security, household resilience, food availability and utilization, among other topics. I am sharing the news with you that as of Monday, December 11, the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1505 (ATU), the designated representative for transit workers in the City of Winnipeg, will be on strike, meaning city transit buses will not be operating until further notice. We recognize the potential impact this strike may have on your daily commute, however, please note that university operations, including the Fall Term exam schedule, will continue as planned. We want to assure you that we are committed to supporting you during this challenging time. To facilitate communication and provide answers to anticipated questions, a dedicated website, umanitoba.ca/transit, has been launched to keep the UM community informed and prepared. This platform offers answers to questions related to planning for travel, parking, alternative transportation options and more. To help alleviate some of the financial burden should you choose to drive to campus during the exam period (Dec. 12 to 22), UM Parking Services has updated rates as per below: Fort Garry campus: * Parking lots U and Q * Payment through the Honk Mobile app<https://news.umanitoba.ca/honk-if-you-love-mobile-parking-payment-solutions/> * Use Zone 91430 for U Lot * Use Zone 91400 for Q Lot. * Alternatively, students can pay in these lots without a Honk account by scanning the Honk Express Checkout QR code located on signage in U and Q casual sections near the parking meters. * The cost to park is $2.50 per hour. * Other larger casual parking areas available Monday December 11 are: * Parking lot L - $2.50 per hour. * University Parkade - $4.50 per hour * SD Lot (located at the Soccer Complex which is on the Campus Shuttle route) - $2 per 2 hours. Bannatyne campus: Parking lot H is available for casual parking at a rate of $4.50 per hour. Space is very limited. HSC has parkades with casual parking including 820 Sherbrook Street for $4 per hour, 701 William Avenue for $4, and 10 Emily Street for $4. Angie Bruce appointed UM’s new Vice-President (Indigenous)

[cid:image001.png@01DA284E.BF630A30] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor I am pleased to announce the appointment of Angie Bruce as the new Vice-President (Indigenous) of the University of Manitoba. Ms. Bruce will join UM to begin her term on February 1, 2024. At that time, we will officially welcome her to the UM community and look forward to supporting her as she continues to advance the priorities of the Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous). An impactful and collaborative leader, Ms. Bruce brings experience and success working with First Nations, Inuit and Métis people and Nations, communities, local, regional and federal governments and organizations, and across the non-Indigenous public, private and non-profit sectors. Currently, Ms. Bruce is the Assistant Deputy Minister of Natural Resources Canada's Nòkwewashk – the first Government of Canada departmental team to be gifted its name by Indigenous Elders. In her capacity, Ms. Bruce grew the Indigenous Natural Resource Program to $100 million and supported the first natural resources international missions that highlighted Indigenous-led partnerships and business around the world. Ms. Bruce also led the development of an Indigenous Research Ethics policy for the department, changing the way scientists engage and partner with Indigenous Nations across Canada. Prior to her role at Natural Resources Canada, Ms. Bruce was Manitoba's Indigenous and Northern Relations and Municipal Relations Deputy Minister, where she led the highest number of Treaty Land Entitlement land transfers in the province’s history. She has also held senior positions with the Legacy of Hope Foundation and the Aboriginal Healing Foundation, organizations that worked to support the education and awareness of Residential Schools and the healing of Survivors. Ms. Bruce brings significant experience in Indigenous research as a leader on projects for the Government of Canada, Government of Manitoba, City of Winnipeg, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and the Manitoba Métis Federation, with a focus on Indigenous-led processes and program delivery. Ms. Bruce is a proud Red River Métis woman tied to her home community of St. Laurent, Manitoba. Ms. Bruce grew up in the Métis culture and credits the strong maternal figures in her family for instilling a connection to the land, community, culture and spirit. Ms. Bruce is a UM alum and holds a master’s degree in business administration from the Asper School of Business. She is currently a PhD Candidate at Nipissing University. I would also like to take this opportunity to recognize Dr. Catherine Cook for her visionary leadership. As the first-ever Vice-President (Indigenous), Dr. Cook has been a collaborative, patient, yet assertive, leader and a strong mentor for Indigenous women working to change colonial structures. During her term, she oversaw the Indigenous Senior Leadership projects, six initiatives<https://umanitoba.ca/about-um/vice-president-indigenous/engaging-community-…> created to advance Indigenous engagement, success and governance at UM and to build a culturally safe environment for Indigenous students, staff, faculty and guests. Her work to address post-secondary organizational and structural gaps and barriers to First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples, will impact both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people for generations. I am thankful she has extended her term until the end of January 2024. Please join me in thanking Dr. Cook and in congratulating Ms. Bruce on this new role where she will continue the legacy of exemplary leadership for the Vice-President (Indigenous) portfolio. Important information on potential transit disruptions

The City of Winnipeg is currently negotiating a new agreement with the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1505 ("ATU"), the union representing transit workers. UM has been informed The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), the union representing most Transit staff, is in a legal strike position and has advised that their members will not work overtime, which will mean disruption to services.
