We are excited to share the Where We Are Today report<https://umanitoba.ca/sites/default/files/2023-06/UMStrategicPlan-WhereWeAre…> for your review and input. The report explains the key themes, priorities, and challenges that emerged from the consultations throughout February and March. The document not only highlights what we have learned so far, but also starts to identify some ways in which our new strategic plan may move things forward. This document is not a draft of the strategic plan, but it is an important milestone that will help us set the aspirational goals that we will work towards together over the next five to ten years. We invite you to read the report and tell us whether the priorities we captured resonate with what the community said. We also need your help to bring these priorities to life in innovative and creative ways. What are the aspirations of our community within this priority framework we've built together? What are we reaching for? What do we want to achieve? What are the big ideas we want UM to be known for that will have lasting impacts? The UM Strategic Plan website<https://umanitoba.ca/strategic-plan> includes details on opportunities to provide feedback on the Where We Are Today report, including through participation in small group community consultation sessions and a link to the online form to provide your thoughts on the key themes and priorities, and share your bold ideas for the future. Your comments will be presented back to the community later in the summer on where we see the university heading and what we aspire to be as we move forward with drafting our next strategic plan. Thank you again to everyone who has contributed to this report through the town hall, community consultation sessions, and survey. Over 1,000 community members (made up of nearly equal parts students and equal parts faculty and staff) completed the online form in March and more than 1,000 community members participated in 60 community consultation sessions held throughout February. We want to hear all your voices to enhance our scholarship, grow our research enterprise, elevate the student experience, advance Reconciliation, and deepen our community engagement. Search for a Vice-President (Indigenous): A message from President Michael Benarroch

[cid:image001.png@01D97F45.2E4AB820] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Catherine Cook has served the University of Manitoba as its inaugural Vice-President (Indigenous) since January 1, 2020 and in 2022, agreed to a one-year extension of her term. At that time, she signaled her intention to step down from this role and retire from the University at the conclusion of her term extension. Dr. Cook will conclude her time as Vice-President (Indigenous) later in 2023, in conjunction with the end of the search for the next Vice-President (Indigenous). Dr. Cook's contributions as Vice-President (Indigenous) have been exceptional and far-reaching. She conceptualized a portfolio that offers both strategic leadership of and support to the University's overall Indigenous engagement and achievement, Reconciliation and anti-racism efforts, including to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. She successfully led a university-wide process to implement the recommendations of the Indigenous Senior Leadership Report, directly engaging over 60 members of the university community through six project teams to implement 31 priorities or commitments. Further, under her leadership, UM successfully advocated for an $85M federal investment in a permanent home for the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation; developed a Reconciliation Action Plan for the University; secured a $16.1M gift from the Mastercard Foundation for EleV programs that support Indigenous student success in a range of innovative ways, designed in partnership with Indigenous communities, governments and organizations; pursued a consultative approach to assessing how UM supports the declaration of Indigenous identity; and co-chaired the Anti-Racism Task Force. These accomplishments are among Dr. Cook's many significant contributions as Vice-President (Indigenous) and do not include her many notable contributions in her earlier roles as Vice-Dean (Indigenous) in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, and as associate professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences. Taken together, Dr. Cook's contributions are generational in impact, and have been pivotal in pursuing the University of Manitoba's commitment to advance Reconciliation at all levels - in governance, leadership, and practice, and to be national leaders in this journey. With the end of Dr. Cook's term nearing, the process to search for a new Vice-President (Indigenous) has begun. Mask use encouraged, not required, for Summer Term 2023: A message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor

[cid:image001.png@01D97690.440E5B20] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor Dear UM community, The University of Manitoba's mandatory masking protocol will end when Summer Term begins on May 1. From that date forward, masking will be strongly encouraged, and UM will continue to supply masks as the university still recommends people use them, especially in indoor spaces that do not allow for distancing. This change will align UM with current public health practices across the province. As we remove the masking mandate, individuals' risk assessments will vary and I ask everyone in this community to respect the decisions of others<https://umanitoba.ca/about-um/respectful-work-and-learning-environment-poli….>. Throughout the pandemic, UM has been very mindful of the most vulnerable among us who carried (and continue to carry) more burden than the majority had to. This is why we are one of the last institutions in Canada to lift its mask mandate. This mandate helped keep our community safe while vaccines were rolled out, and while hospitals were under the greatest strain. UM has also been assessing our HVAC systems and making improvements to support optimal air quality. Additional enhancements will continue into Fall 2023, and you can read more about them here<https://umanitoba.ca/covid-19/health-safety#indoor-air-quality-at-um>. Thank you to everyone who has consistently prioritized public health by wearing a mask. I recognize it may not always be comfortable or convenient to do so, but I sincerely appreciate how committed this community is to keeping each other safe. I'd like to also extend my gratitude to Security Services for taking on the additional duty of providing masks and helping support the mask mandate over the past three years. Our inter-disciplinary delegation of UM researchers was joined by two citizens from Carcross/Tagish First Nation and played a vital role in setting the agenda for global water governance and sustainability. At the end of March, I was also thrilled to read about the important work being undertaken by a group of UM Engineering students<https://news.umanitoba.ca/um-cubesat-ready-for-lift-off/> whose UM Cube Satellite was selected by the Canadian Space Agency to travel to the International Space Station in June. The satellite will reach the space station later this summer and collect important information about how space conditions affect the composition of asteroids and the Moon. Well done! This season the UM Bisons<https://gobisons.ca/> excelled on the field, court, track, ice, and in the water - wherever the competition took them. Teams, athletes and coaches were celebrated at the annual Brown and Gold Awards<https://gobisons.ca/sports/2021/4/14/brown-and-gold-awards.aspx> on April 1, and many were also recognized with conference and national-level awards. Congratulations to all - we are proud to be Bisons and look forward to cheering you on again in 23-24! On March 30, twelve graduate students shared highlights of their innovative research through the Three Minute Thesis<https://umanitoba.ca/graduate-studies/student-experience/three-minute-thesi…> (3MT) competition, covering topics from sustainable farming methods to using virtual reality and artificial intelligence to treat dementia. The winner<https://news.umanitoba.ca/3mt-winner-is-full-of-heart/>, Keshav Alagarsamy, whose research focuses on Using personalized stem cell technology for heart regeneration, will move on to the Western Regional Competition on May 25. I want to extend my deepest condolences and best wishes to those who have been affected by the devastating earthquakes in these countries. We are here for you, and we support you during this time. As we head into the Winter Break period, I hope all students have many opportunities to relax, recharge, and enjoy some of the winter fun happening around town. Louis Riel Day On Monday we honour Louis Riel, the Founding Father of Manitoba, with events and activities across the province. "Recognizing anti-Black Racism" Survey Dear University of Manitoba community member The University of Manitoba Black Association (UMBA) is an initiative dedicated to supporting the success of future and present African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) students, staff and faculty at the University of Manitoba and in the broader Winnipeg community. The initiative purposely pays attention to the social oppression among Black U of M community members. They experience the intersectional reality anti-Black racism in the forms of sexism, gender biases, and ability. UMBA is led by a collaboration of Black alumni, staff, students and current faculty. The UMBA committee requests your participation in the "Recognizing anti-Black Racism" survey. The fully confidential survey is for The University of Manitoba's students, staff and faculty. Your participation in this survey is completely voluntary, and all of your responses are held in confidence. None of the responses will be connected to identifying information. Campus Commute survey – we need your input!

[University of Manitoba Logo] UM community, UM needs your help to improve your campus commute and inform future transportation planning! Fill out the 2023 Campus Commute survey<http://umanitoba.ca/campuscommute> between January 16 and 31, 2023 for a chance to win a $500 grocery gift certificate or one of ten $50 gift vouchers to Degrees, Campo or Starbucks. Results of the Campus Commute Survey inform strategic planning around transportation related infrastructure, education and peer-based programs in support of climate action, sustainability and wellness goals. This year’s Campus Commute Survey also includes questions to help us better understand our greenhouse gas emissions from commuting and air travel and to inform future strategies for the UM Climate Action Plan. The UM Climate Action Plan is a new framework that will help us halve our greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, and become carbon neutral by 2050. In 2019, 29% of our total emissions were generated from transportation related to commuting, business and research travel, and fleet vehicles. This survey is approved by the UM Survey Review Committee and administered by the Green Action Centre. All responses are completely confidential and only aggregated results are reported back to the University. They provide specialized expertise and intricate data analysis and calculations for greenhouse gas emissions, and support transportation surveys and strategies for many other organizations including the City of Winnipeg. UM has a longstanding relationship with the Green Action Centre, which has supported previous UM Campus Commute surveys, and provides informed recommendations based on survey results. The survey is organized biennially by the Office of Sustainability. As we emerge from the pandemic, we can now come together to ask ourselves how we best focus our attention and resources toward shared goals. The world has changed significantly since we created Taking Our Place<https://umanitoba.ca/sites/default/files/2020-06/um-strategic-plan-2015-202…> more than seven years ago. Now is the time to come together to ask ourselves how we will bring about the most needed change in this new era-how we will inspire and advance big ideas and solve the world's pressing problems. University strategic plan process and consultations We are co-chairing a broadly representative Strategic Planning Committee to lead internal and external consultations and draft the plan. The full membership of the committee and its terms of reference can be found on the strategic plan website<https://umanitoba.ca/strategic-plan>. We have also sought the expertise of Alex Usher and his team at Higher Education Strategy Associates (HESA) to support our work. They have helped us design the consultation process, provided a brief on trends in the sector, are providing ongoing support to our facilitators, and will help interpret the results of the consultation that will lead to our final plan. As we look forward, I'm excited for what we'll achieve together in 2023. Last year offered much to be proud of. We had a very successful return to in-person teaching and learning, celebrated many awards, made incredible breakthroughs in research, and contributed to our province and beyond in remarkable ways. 2022 also saw a record-setting nine Vanier Scholars<https://news.umanitoba.ca/vanier2022/>, an incredible federal investment<https://news.umanitoba.ca/national-centre-for-truth-and-reconciliation-welc…'s,home%20and%20long%20term%20work&text=Residential%20school%20Survivors%20and%20the,at%20the%20University%20of%20Manitoba.> in the future of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation<https://nctr.ca/> and a transformational gift<https://news.umanitoba.ca/gatesfoundation/> from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for UM researchers' work to improve maternal and newborn health in India. Together, we're making progress on our Reconciliation Action Plan, our Anti-Racism Strategy, and much work is being done to ensure our campus is a safe space where everyone can dream big. Thank you to all our faculty, staff, coaches, mentors and students for consistently striving for excellence in every endeavor. One of the most important initiatives we will undertake together this year is creating the next iteration of our strategic plan. We will offer many opportunities for you to engage, and I look forward to sharing details with you on the process later this month. Our efforts matter greatly to students, Manitobans, and the global community. We are Manitoba's research university and I am deeply proud to lead this institution and to champion how we collectively enhance our entire province. Finally, thank you for continuing to wear masks.
