Important notice: Manitoba time zone change and Microsoft Outlook Calendar
by Service Desk Communication 19 Oct '26

19 Oct '26

Important notice: Manitoba time zone change and Microsoft Outlook Calendar Dear UM Outlook Calendar users, On Nov.1, 2026, Manitoba will move to permanent daylight saving time. This change will affect how time zones are handled in Microsoft Outlook for calendar items on or after Nov.1, 2026. Microsoft plans to release guidance and updates to support this change before it takes effect. Outlook users should watch for future communications and Microsoft guidance regarding any actions that may be required. This change impacts Microsoft Outlook calendar users in the following ways: 1. Clocks in Manitoba will not be turned back one hour at 2 a.m. on Nov.1, 2026. 2. The Manitoba Region will permanently remain on the UTC−5 time zone year-round. What this means for you Microsoft’s guidance and update may require Outlook users to review appointments and meetings scheduled for Nov.1, 2026, or later, as they may appear one hour earlier or later than intended. This may affect events created before Microsoft’s time zone update is installed, particularly recurring meetings that continue beyond November 1. This means you should review these events after the update to confirm that the start and end times are correct for all participants. What you need to do on November 1 Review upcoming events: Open appointments and meetings scheduled on or after November 1 and confirm that they display at the intended time. Update affected meetings: Open the event, select the time block, use the globe icon to display its time zone settings, and choose the new correct provincial time zone. Only the meeting organizer can update a meeting with attendees. Check recurring meetings carefully: Editing the time zone for a recurring series resets exceptions, such as an individual occurrence moved to a different time. Re-create those exceptions after updating the series. Learn more For detailed instructions on updating your time zone or upcoming events for new Outlook, Outlook on the web, Outlook.com and classic Outlook, you may refer to the Microsoft’s guidance<https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/calendar/timezone-changes-for-c…> for time zone changes in other Canadian provinces. We understand the importance of accurate calendar information and appreciate your patience as these updates are implemented. We will provide additional updates as more information becomes available. by VP Students 22 Sep '26

22 Sep '26

Dear students, As the fall term gets underway, we want to remind you of the supports and processes available if you need academic accommodations for spiritual and religious observance. The University of Manitoba is committed to supporting students' well-being and to respecting the diversity of religious and spiritual practices within our community. If you anticipate needing accommodations, please consider the following options: * Review your course syllabus for information regarding missed tests, assignments, examinations, and other coursework requirements. Some courses or departments may have established procedures or policies that apply when academic work is missed. * Contact your faculty/advisor as soon as possible, ideally early in the term or as soon as you become aware of the need, to discuss assignments, tests or exams that may be impacted. * Review available accommodation options with your instructor or advisor. In some situations, you may be asked to complete the Self-Declaration Policy for Students<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/academic-supports/student-advocacy/se…> form. * Consider speaking with a faith, spiritual, or community leader about ways of observing religious or spiritual practices, particularly where academic requirements may be difficult to adjust. * If you need help navigating a request or are experiencing challenges, you can contact Student Advocacy and Case Management<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/academic-supports/student-advocacy>, the Spiritual Care and Multi-Faith Centre<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/spiritual-services>, or the Office of Human Rights and Conflict Management<https://umanitoba.ca/human-rights-and-conflict-management/> for guidance. Introducing L’offis Wiichihihwahk – Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous)
by VP Indigenous 10 Sep '26

10 Sep '26

[Graphic with embellished bottom and text reading: Introducing L'offis Wiichihihwahk - Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous)] Dear students, As we begin a new academic year, I’d like to introduce you to a name you’ll be seeing and hearing more often across the UM community: L’offis Wiichihihwahk, the new name of the Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous). L’offis Wiichihihwahk is a Michif name gifted to our office by Elder Charlotte Nolin with the support of Michif language keeper Verna DeMontigny. It means “the office that helps.” When gifting the name, Elder Nolin shared a simple but powerful teaching: people are the medicine, helping one another. That spirit is at the heart of L’offis Wiichihihwahk – Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous) — supporting one another, building relationships and creating a campus community where Indigenous students, cultures, languages, Knowledges and Ways of Being are respected and can thrive. Gifted in Michif, the name honours the Métis Nation and is part of a growing effort to ensure Indigenous names and languages are visible, spoken and honoured throughout our campuses. I invite you to learn the name and explore the story and meaning behind it: * Pronunciation: Luff-iss Wee-chay-hayh-wawk<https://soundcloud.com/um-indigenous/loffis-wiichihihwahk?si=4076634a09254e…> * Watch the video<https://youtu.be/BhaUJ4QDV1s?si=bT1b_GWHESBYXV5l> to learn more about the new name. * Read "L’offis Wiichihihwahk: UM’s Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous) introduces its new Michif name<https://umtoday.ca/stories/loffis-wiichihihwahk-ums-office-vice-president-i…>” to learn more about the name and Indigenous naming at UM. I hope that the next time you see or hear L’offis Wiichihihwahk – Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous) on campus, you’ll remember the spirit at the heart of the name: we help one another and no one walks alone. I look forward to seeing many of you at Indigenous Orientation<https://umanitoba.ca/indigenous/indigenous-orientation> on September 16 — a great opportunity to connect with other students, build relationships and experience the Indigenous community at UM. Thank you, Kinanāskomitin, Miigwech, Pidamaya, Máhsi cho, NakurmĪk, Maarsii, Merci Angie Dr. Angie Bruce, PhD, MBA Vice-President (Indigenous) L’offis Wiichihihwahk – Office of Vice-President (Indigenous) 202 Administration Building | 66 Chancellors Circle Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 2N2 Angie.Bruce(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:Angie.Bruce@umanitoba.ca> [Image]
