Zika Virus Information

[cid:image001.jpg@01CEC4DE.C0FA5C60] The University of Manitoba is closely monitoring advisories from Manitoba Health, Healthy Living and Seniors (MHHLS), the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding the Zika virus outbreak in countries of the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. As members of our university community travel to these countries, this message is being provided to inform you of some potential risks associated with the Zika virus and steps you can take to reduce the risk. At the current time, WHO, PHAC, and MHHLS advise that: * There should be no restrictions on travel or trade with countries, areas and/or territories with Zika virus transmission, * Travellers to areas with Zika virus transmission should be provided with up to date advice on potential risks and appropriate measures to reduce the possibility of exposure to mosquito bites, * It is recommended that pregnant women and those considering becoming pregnant discuss their travel plans with their health care provider to assess their risk and consider postponing travel to areas where the Zika virus is circulating in the Americas. If travel cannot be postponed, then strict mosquito bite prevention measures should be followed to protect themselves against bites. What is it? The Zika virus is transmitted by a mosquito bite from infected Aedes mosquitoes, which are distributed widely throughout the tropics and subtropics. They bite during the day and early evening. What are the symptoms? About 80% of affected individuals are asymptomatic. Those who develop symptoms usually develop a mild, self- limiting disease, resolving within 7 days of symptom onset. Symptoms generally appear 3-14 days following a bite from an infected mosquito. Symptoms commonly include: acute onset of low grade fever (38.5C or lower), rash, joint pains, conjunctivitis. Less common symptoms have included muscle aches, weakness, lethargy and headaches. There is a speculative association between the Zika virus and birth defects. There is evidence to suggest that pregnant women are either more susceptible or develop more severe presentations. What is the treatment? There is no vaccine or specific treatment for the Zika virus infection. How can I reduce the chances of Zika virus infection? Prevention is key. Travelers to outbreak regions should use appropriate mosquito repellants, such as those containing DEET or Icaridin, wear protective clothing, and use bed nets. Every effort should be made to keep mosquitoes out of living areas by ensuring doors are closed, window screens are in good repair and using air conditioning. D2L renamed UM Learn As of May 2015, the learning management system, Desire2Learn, has been renamed to 'UM Learn’. This change reflects and celebrates the commitment that the University of Manitoba is making in teaching and learning. The Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, The Division of Extended Education, Information Services & Technology, and the D2L Corporation have committed to continuing their strong partnership to help support the efforts to enhance teaching and learning at the University of Manitoba. Phishing Email Recommendations There have been increased reports of Phishing emails. We would like to remind you of precautions when it comes to unsolicited email. 1. All unsolicited emails related to your accounts should immediately be suspect. 2. Phishing emails will redirect you to an illegitimate site and prompt you for personal information. 3. You can always check the destination of the link by hovering your mouse pointer over it. 4. Never click a link in an unsolicited email instead visit the organization’s website directly by typing a known address into your browser. 5. The University of Manitoba will not ask for your password or confidential banking information via an email. Some common themes to watch for are: 1. threats of account closure 2. mentions of "upgrades" that require changes to your account 3. "verification" of your account 4. any request for userid, password, financial information 5. request to "click a link" for anything related to email or financial accounts 6. generic wording in the salutation, body or closing signature 7. technical deception to make a link in an email appear to belong to a spoofed organization 8. use of images instead of text in order to evade keyword filters 9. Forging real websites, logos or login pages 10. The targets are often email accounts, online banking, credit cards, PayPal, Amazon, and parcel delivery. If you receive an email that you are uncertain of DO NOT click any links.
