Join us on Thursday, October 22, 2026, to showcase your summer research, connect with fellow student researchers, and compete for a share of $7,500 in cash prizes! NEW! This year, alongside the Oral Presentation Stream and Poster Presentation Stream, both hosted in the Multi-Purpose Room in University Centre, we are excited to introduce a new Innovation Stream. This stream will provide interested students with an opportunity to share the entrepreneurial and innovation potential of their projects and ideas in an elevator pitch style presentation. The Innovation Stream will be hosted by IDEA START<https://umanitoba.ca/ideastart> in the new IDEA START space in University Centre (Room 151, 1st Floor) and will feature an audience and judges dedicated to foster innovation, creativity, collaboration, and entrepreneurship. L’offis Wiichihihwahk is a Michif name gifted to our office by Elder Charlotte Nolin with the support of Michif language keeper Verna DeMontigny. It means “the office that helps.” When gifting the name, Elder Nolin shared a simple but powerful teaching: people are the medicine, helping one another. That spirit is at the heart of L’offis Wiichihihwahk – Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous) — supporting one another, building relationships and creating a campus community where Indigenous students, cultures, languages, Knowledges and Ways of Being are respected and can thrive. Gifted in Michif, the name honours the Métis Nation and is part of a growing effort to ensure Indigenous names and languages are visible, spoken and honoured throughout our campuses. UManitoba Mobile App Retiring September 3 The UManitoba mobile app will be retired on September 3, 2026, and removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. After this date, you will no longer be able to sign in or access content through the app. Many of the services and information previously available in the app are already accessible through UM websites and other online services. An initiative is currently underway to improve the digital experience for students, informed by recent student consultation and survey feedback. What you need to know: * The UManitoba mobile app will no longer be available after September 3, 2026. * Existing users will no longer be able to access app content or services after that date. * Students should use UManitoba websites and Aurora to access university information and resources. As you get ready for Fall Term, here are a few updates to help you plan your commute and navigate the Fort Garry campus. Road construction Roadwork on and around the Fort Garry campus may affect your commute, including construction on Dysart Road, University Crescent, Pembina Highway, Abinojii Mikanah and Kings Drive. Please expect delays and plan ahead. Allow for an additional 15 to 30 minutes on average. Check UM Services Disruptions<https://umanitoba.ca/facilities/service-disruptions> for a full listing of roadwork around campus and to receive updates. Winnipeg Transit Winnipeg Transit’s fall schedule begins September 6. Important upcoming changes to multi-factor authentication Dear students, staff and faculty, The University of Manitoba would like to share information regarding Microsoft’s upcoming changes to multi-factor authentication (MFA), which are intended to strengthen account security and reduce the risk of phishing attacks. Microsoft has announced that it will begin retiring its built-in SMS text message and voice call verification options. Beginning September 1, 2026, people who use SMS text message or voice call verification for MFA may see prompts asking them to register a more secure authentication method, such as: * Microsoft Authenticator<https://umanitoba.ca/information-services-technology/my-security/set-up-mfa…> * Passkeys – To add a passkey, go to mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info<https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info> → click "Add sign-in method" → select "Passkey" and follow the steps. * Hardware security keys<https://umanitoba.ca/information-services-technology/my-security/request-to…> – OTP (one-time password) key fobs for example or any which are FIDO (Fast Identity Online)-compliant No immediate action is required. SMS and voice-based MFA will continue to work for now. However, if you are not already using one of these authentication methods, Information Services and Technology recommends registering for a more secure option as soon as Microsoft prompts you to do so. This will help ensure a smooth transition and improve the security of your university account. IST is currently reviewing Microsoft’s changes and assessing options to support our community members. JUNE 2026 Final Exam Period approaching The June 2026 Final Exam period runs from June 15 - 19, 2026. Please make sure to confirm your exam date, time, location, and format. NOTE: If you are registered in May - August or July - August courses that have a final exam, the August 2026 exam schedule is expected to be posted approximately four weeks prior to the final exam period of August 10-15, 2026. Attendance & identification: Students must display their UM student ID card or government issued photo identification (such as a passport or driver's license) and are required to sign an attendance form. 5. Arriving late: * Students who arrive more than 30 minutes after the start of the examination will not be permitted to write the examination. * Students who arrive less than 30 minutes late, will be permitted to write the examination, but must stop writing at the end of the scheduled exam time. * Students are not permitted to enter the examination room after at least one other student who is writing the same examination has left the examination room. * If you are late and not permitted to write an examination, you will be asked to complete the appropriate form by an invigilator and will then be advised to contact the Office of your Dean or Director no later than the next business day to discuss possible alternatives. 1. Illness/ emergency during your exam: If you become ill during the course of an examination and are unable to continue, you must report at once to the Head Invigilator, hand in the examination, and indicate either that you wish to submit your examination paper as: (1) completed; or (2) not completed and with the intention to request a deferred examination. Medical or supporting documentation will likely be required for your deferral request. 2. Leaving the exam: * Students are not permitted to leave the examination room during the first thirty (30) minutes of an examination. * Students are not permitted to re-enter an examination room until all examination scripts have been collected. ________________________________ Unauthorized materials in exams Students are not permitted to access any unauthorized materials during an examination. Upcoming change to your Microsoft Outlook account: Automatic archiving of email older than two years Dear students, Thank you for your efforts in meeting the M365 data storage limits for students, faculty and staff. As part of our ongoing efforts to manage Microsoft 365 storage responsibly, a change will be made to your Microsoft Outlook account: email messages older than two years will be automatically archived. This will include Shared Mailboxes. Starting May 28, 2026 emails more than two years old will be moved from your Outlook mailbox to an Online Archive. What this means for you * Archived email – including in shared mailboxes – will remain fully accessible within Outlook in an Online Archive folder. This folder will appear in the regular Outlook navigation pane (on the left-hand side of your screen) as a sub-folder titled Online archive – email address * You will still be able to search, read, reply to, and forward archived messages just as you would any other email. * This change helps keep mailbox sizes manageable while preserving long‑term access to your messages. What you need to know * No action is required on your part. IST will implement this change automatically. * No emails will be deleted. * The only adjustment for users is when searching for older emails. Messages more than two years old will be located in the Online Archive folder rather than your primary mailbox. * The archiving process may take up to six weeks to complete. During this transition, you may need to search both your primary mailbox and the archive folder to locate messages. How to search for archived emails * Classic Outlook users - Your archived emails will be located in the folder named Online archive – UMNetID(a)myumanitoba.ca<mailto:UMNetID@myumanitoba.ca>. To search archived emails, open the Online Archive folder and use the search bar at the top. UM150 will offer a year of opportunities to commemorate our history and celebrate where we are headed.
