Safety precautions

Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) today reported<(http:/winnipeg.ca/police/press/2017/11nov/2017_11_21.aspx> random groping incidents near the Health Sciences Centre (HSC) although the initial report stated the three victims are all HSC employees, WPS has since confirmed that one is a University of Manitoba student. The University of Manitoba wants to ensure the safety and security of the university community. Security Services takes this opportunity to remind everyone on our campuses of a number of useful safety precautions: · Stay alert to your surroundings, trust your instincts and, if you feel uncomfortable in a place or situation, leave immediately. The best prevention is precaution. · One of the most successful deterrents to street crime is the buddy system. A lone person is the best target for a criminal. Travel in pairs or with a group whenever you can. · Be aware of your surroundings and don’t use unfamiliar shortcuts to save time. · Plan a safe route and stick to it. · Stay on busy, well-lighted streets. · Walk in the middle of the sidewalk. · Set boundaries and keep a safe distance from strangers on the street. · Walk facing traffic so you can see approaching cars. · If you are being followed, change directions and head for a populated area. Security Services offers the following safety initiatives: · 24/7 full time security presence through Security Services. · CCTV camera coverage. · The recently expanded Safewalk program is available on both the Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses. Students, staff and visitors can request a Safewalk 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As part of the program, Security Services will accompany an individual from one university location to another, to their vehicle or to a bus stop on university property. [LH masthead.jpg] Last year, the University of Manitoba community launched a revised set of behavioural policies, including a new stand-alone sexual assault policy. Like other universities across Canada, the University of Manitoba recognized the continued importance of addressing behavioural issues. Our ongoing goal is to build a culture of consent, respect, trust, and inclusivity and, most importantly, to ensure the safety of our community. The revised policies, available online at http://umanitoba.ca/human_rights/rwle/index.html, are clear and direct, resulting from broad and extensive consultation with all groups on campus, including students, staff and faculty. They also are responsive to the needs of our community. The policies have been tested, and they work. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be reviewed. They can, and will be. Feedback from individuals involved directly in incidents, especially feedback from complainants, is always valued and will inform revisions, which will be undertaken every three years. As has occurred recently, the effectiveness of our policies will attract scrutiny. Although I cannot speak to any individual case, I do want to take this opportunity to emphasize the university's unwavering commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive and respectful environment. That means that we deeply respect the concerns of any members of our community who show the courage to come forward with a complaint. Their thoughts and feelings are important to us. We will support them, we will follow through on their concerns, and we will do what we can to ensure their safety. These matters are complex, and they require navigating many sensitive and challenging issues, often within a competing framework of rights and interests and legislative requirements. In order for the policies to work effectively, they have to respect the confidentiality and privacy of the complainant, but also of the respondent. That can be difficult to accept when one is directly involved, but it is essential in order to maintain the integrity of the process. I am confident the policies work, that they help keep our campuses safe, inclusive and respectful. The policies are critical to building the university we want to be, and we are committed to refining them as required. This is an iterative process. We listen, we learn, and we improve. Perhaps it is fitting that, as we mark Homecoming Week, celebrating our achievements and successes, friendships and relationships, we also remind ourselves of our pledge to build a community together where we learn and work with one another assured of our safety, inclusion and respect. To the University of Manitoba community, Next month our Fort Garry Campus will play host to the 2017 Canada Summer Games, serving as the Athletes' Village, the main venue for volleyball and track and field, and the location of the closing ceremonies. It's a year of anniversaries: the Canada Summer Games 50th; Canada's 150th; and the University of Manitoba's 140th. Our campus, and our city and province, will come alive with the presence of thousands of athletes and their coaches and the visitors who will arrive to enjoy the spectacle of Canada's finest youngest athletes competing against one another for the opportunity to represent their nation in future international events. I hope as many of you as possible will find a way to engage with the games. Whether as friends or family, athletes, volunteers, spectators, or simply hosts welcoming our visitors, I am confident each of us who will be on campus during the 2017 Canada Summer Games will represent this institution well as it takes the national stage for two weeks, from July 28 to August 13. During that time the University of Manitoba will host 4,000 athletes, ranging in age from 13 to 21. Many of these young athletes are still deciding what shape their futures might take; we have an opportunity to show them that the University of Manitoba - indeed, post-secondary education in any form - can help them achieve their dreams and goals. Along with the athletes, the Athletes' Village will host each team's coaching and mission staff: their medical staff, media liaisons and others. These athletes and teams, representing each of Canada's provinces and territories, will be located in more than 30 University of Manitoba buildings and using many of the exceptional facilities we have to offer, including housing, food services and the Active Living Centre. At the same time, the Fort Garry Campus will be bustling with its usual summer activities, not the least of which will be Mini-University. I can't imagine a time when we'll have more people on campus representing a wider age span what a wonderful way to mark our 140th birthday! Of course, any undertaking of this magnitude requires organization, cooperation and some level of accommodation. Some of us we will be relocated to make room for our visitors; traffic flows may be rerouted, bus stops moved. Important Information about global ransomware attack

As many of you may have heard, on Friday, May 12, a major ransomware attack affected thousands of systems around the world. Cybersecurity firms have reported over 75,000 attacks in 99 countries. The majority of the attacks have occurred in Europe and Asia. The attack spreads by multiple methods, including phishing emails. Once the malware has infected a system on a network, it can spread rapidly due to a vulnerability in all Windows operating systems that was discovered and subsequently patched in March of this year. Due to the scale of the attack, Microsoft has taken the unusual step of releasing updates for older operating systems such as Windows XP, Server 2003 and early versions of Windows 8. These patches can be downloaded from Microsoft. The University of Manitoba has taken the following precautions to protect against this malware: * all core servers were patched for this vulnerability in March * managed desktops have been patched * un-managed desktops will have automatic updates applied. It is important that end users accept and apply these updates. All employees and students should ensure their personally owned systems have operating system and application patches applied on a monthly basis or when they are made available. Malware in MS Office documents, PDF's and ZIP files is very common. Exam Period Conflicts

In order to minimize the impact on our students by completing the academic year as close to the original date as possible, the Winter Term examination period was condensed, and an additional day was added to accommodate scheduling conflicts, resulting in the final exam period of April 22-30, 2017. While we have made every effort to reduce the number of scheduling conflicts, there are some instances where students may have three exams in four consecutive exam periods. If you are in this situation, you may seek alternative exam writing times at the discretion of the faculty. It is also recognized that some students may have booked travel prior to the adjustment of the academic schedule and extension of the revised Winter Term examination period. If this is the case for you, you may seek an alternative exam writing time at the faculty's discretion and with appropriate documentation. We expect that instructors and faculty administration will be sympathetic in both instances and that alternative arrangements can be made, with appropriate documentation. Please be assured that our campus is a safe place - the Winnipeg Police Service has reassured us that with the arrest made there is no ongoing security concern and the suspect has no evident association with the University of Manitoba. Nevertheless, we understand that events such as this morning's may affect your sense of safety, especially for those of you who may be on campus working or studying in the evening or in isolated locations. Whether you are studying, heading to class, or socializing on campus, your safety is our utmost concern. Numerous proactive initiatives have been put into place to ensure your safety, including 24/7 security officers on regular patrol, an increased number of security cameras in some buildings, the Safewalk Program<http://umanitoba.ca/campus/security/programs/safewalk.html>, and Code Blue<http://umanitoba.ca/campus/security/safety/codeblue.html> and Emergency Red Phones<http://umanitoba.ca/campus/security/safety/codeblue.html>. All of us wish them strength in this difficult time. I also extend condolences to the deceased's colleagues at Winnipeg Transit, and thank them for the invaluable service they provide to our community every day. Our wishes are for their continued safety. Thank you also to the Winnipeg Police Service. WPS has the suspect in custody and has confirmed that there is no ongoing security concern; the suspect has no evident association with the University of Manitoba. Our community is reassured by the arrest that has been made. At the same time, our hearts and minds remain with the family and loved ones of Mr. Fraser. With nearly 200 students from these countries studying here at the University of Manitoba, I want to assure you that we support those in our community who are affected by the recently imposed travel restrictions and that we are committed to providing you with up-to-date information and support services. Information on the Updated Academic Schedule

Please be aware that: * The Registrar's Office will send out an email this afternoon regarding the new Voluntary Withdrawal dates as well as other important information about date and deadline changes. * The University will be closed December 23 - January 2 as originally scheduled. There will be no classes or exams held during this time. * All students enrolled in classes that were affected by the strike will return to class on January 3 to make up for missed time and to complete final exams. Where travel was booked before the strike, we expect that instructors will be sympathetic and that alternative arrangements can be made for course work and exams (with appropriate documentation). * An updated exam schedule for classes interrupted by the strike is expected in early December. We will post that schedule as soon as it is available. * The exam period for classes not impacted by the strike will be held December 12 - 22. Some exams have been rescheduled from the original date. You can find the updated exam schedule in Aurora through MyExams. * Because classes affected by the strike will run concurrently with the exam period for continuing classes, timetabling conflicts may arise. In the event of a conflict, please consult with your instructors, faculty, college or school office to make alternative arrangements. * The start of the winter term for all students will be pushed back to January 18. U of M and UMFA reach tentative agreement; Classes to resume Tuesday, November 22

The University of Manitoba and the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) today reached a tentative agreement. UMFA Executive is recommending acceptance of the agreement to its members, who will vote Monday. Classes are expected to resume Tuesday, November 22. Over the weekend, negotiating teams made progress on key issues related to teaching workload, performance metrics, and job protection, resulting in a tentative agreement that the UMFA Executive is recommending their members ratify. "The last few weeks have been challenging, and at times divisive, but it is my hope that our community will reunite in support of our commitment to our shared mission of teaching, discovery and engagement," said David Barnard, President and Vice-Chancellor. "To our students, I want to say that I understand and appreciate the extent to which the events of the past few weeks have disrupted your academic programs and shaken your perceptions of this institution. Please know that we are committed to providing a rapid transition back to class so that you can successfully complete the academic year." The University negotiating team expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by the conciliation officer appointed by the Province of Manitoba, who was instrumental in bringing the parties together. The University will not discuss details of the tentative agreement until the UMFA Executive has briefed its members. University of Manitoba asks UMFA to allow vote on latest offer; weekend conciliation unsuccessful

Conciliation between the University of Manitoba and the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) came to an unsuccessful end Sunday afternoon. The University immediately called on the UMFA negotiating team to take the University of Manitoba offer to UMFA members for a ratification vote before November 16, in an effort to minimize any further disruption to students' academic schedules. The University will continue calling for a vote in order to precipitate an end to the strike, which is about to enter its third week. "It is our belief that the UMFA negotiating team will not accept anything the University offers," explained John Kearsey, Vice-President (External) at the University of Manitoba. "They rejected our March offer, intended to allow them to settle before a possible change in government. They rejected our September 13 offer, which provided salary increases of seven per cent over four years. They rejected offers we made during mediation, with a mediator they chose. They rejected offers we made during conciliation. It has been disheartening, to say the least. We are bargaining with ourselves. Given the circumstances, we feel compelled to ask the UMFA negotiating team to present the University's offer to UMFA members for a vote. We want this strike to end. Our students want this strike to end." The conciliator's report is expected early this week. "UMFA negotiators have told us that two issues remain to be resolved, both of which the University indicated during conciliation that it would be willing - in the interest of ending the strike - to have sent to arbitration. This, too, was rejected by UMFA negotiators. It's extremely frustrating, particularly as we watch the distress this is causing our students." The University is advocating for the UMFA negotiating team to take the University offer to its members for a ratification vote before November 16, at which time further impacts on the academic schedule are triggered. In an interview this week, the University of Manitoba's Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Janice Ristock addressed these concerns, and her hopes to find common ground and a positive path forward for students, staff and faculty. On the issue of workload, Ristock noted that UMFA's current proposal would create a lengthy, cumbersome process - and one that is not viable as it would take away the Deans' role to determine workloads. Under the UMFA proposal a Dean would decide on a teaching policy and bring that forward to faculty members, who would vote on it by secret ballot. If faculty voted against the teaching policy, the Dean would have to revise it and present a second version for another secret ballot vote. If that version was also rejected, it would then go to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) and the executive director of UMFA for resolution. "If we're unable to come to an agreement, then it would go to an external arbitrator who is not a member of our community and who is not an academic," said Ristock. "To me, it's not a viable process. It's a process that is very time--consuming and if it gets to the stage of an arbitrator, it's also very costly." In contrast to UMFA's proposal, Ristock drew attention to the importance of the roles of Deans, and their broad consideration of students and faculty. "Deans have the responsibility to consider the academic programs in a unit, to consider the needs of students, the timetable," she said, "and they also have a responsibility to consider the other aspects of an individual professor's workload - research and service commitments." These considerations have to be made on an individual basis, she added. Ristock notes the University has proposed a fund, worth $1.5 million, to help with teaching workloads by providing opportunities to hire a range of support for faculty, including teaching assistants, graders/markers and sessional instructors. In its compromise offer, the University has also proposed creating a joint committee with faculty to examine faculty members' concerns over workload increases due to administrative duties. "We have been listening to the concerns expressed about administrative workloads and have offered a solution to begin to address those issues," said Ristock. "It's a point where we can begin discussions." An additional fund of $500,000 would support implementing recommendations by the joint committee for real improvements to administrative burdens. On the issue of research metrics, Ristock noted that UMFA appears concerned the University may in the future impose research metrics on performance evaluations and decisions around tenure and promotion. "I think it's important to clarify that currently there are no provisions in the collective agreement that speak to the use of research metrics, nor do any of the faculties' tenure and promotion criteria impose the use of research metrics in making assessments," she said. The University has reasserted that research metrics will not be used as a substitute for comprehensive assessment. "The University's position is that it has to be a decision amongst colleagues to decide whether or not it's appropriate to use research metrics as one indicator of the quality of research - and that's very discipline-specific," said Ristock. "There's not one research metric that can be used to assess all research. And we think it's also very important to say that research metrics alone can never be a substitute for a thorough assessment based on the quality and the quantity of research output." Update on Mid-Term Exams and Holiday Closure

Your successful completion of this academic term is our top priority. You have told us that one of your top concerns is mid-term exams. If your class/section is on the official list of continuing classes (http://umanitoba.ca/registrar/status_of_classes.html), your mid-term exams may take place as scheduled. Check with your instructor. If your class/section is not on the official list of continuing classes, you are not responsible for any coursework for this course while the labour disruption continues-including mid-term exams. Mid-term exams for these classes/sections will not take place during the strike, but may be rescheduled at the completion of the strike. Mid-term exams for classes resuming at the end of a strike will not be held on the first day a course re-starts. An appropriate schedule to make up for lost time in courses will be determined once they appear on the list of courses being offered, or at the end of the strike. University disappointed UMFA rejected counter proposal

University seeks conciliation in effort to prevent strike and reach a settlement The University of Manitoba is asking the Province to appoint a conciliator to resolve outstanding issues with the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA). Last night, UMFA walked away from a weekend of mediation - with a mediator selected by the faculty association - and presented the University with a final offer. This morning at 11:30 a.m. the University responded with a counter proposal that addressed substantive issues raised by the faculty association with respect to teaching load and performance metrics. The University also asked UMFA to extend the strike deadline to fully consider the counter proposal. UMFA rejected the University's counter proposal. "We are committed to doing everything possible to find a solution so that student learning is not compromised," said John Kearsey, Vice-President (External). UMFA is scheduled to begin strike action Tuesday morning. The University continues to explore all possible options to prevent a disruption to students. "The University of Manitoba is disappointed that UMFA has rejected yet another attempt to enable our students to continue the academic year without disruption. UMFA rejected the University's salary offer in March, a comprehensive offer of settlement in September, and now, after a weekend of mediation, there has been no progress," Kearsey says. He added, "It is regrettable that UMFA has chosen to strike when so many attempts have been made to take a different path forward." The University understands that students will have concerns - and support is available. This message is being sent from Mark Hudson, President, UMFA, and David Barnard, President, University of Manitoba to all members of the University of Manitoba community After one day of productive mediation, the University of Manitoba and the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) have agreed to communicate jointly to the University community about a dramatic recent development in our ongoing efforts to negotiate a new collective agreement. >From the University of Manitoba's perspective: Over the past several days, the Province has made clear to the University that it has established fresh mandate parameters that seek cooperation in achieving a compensation "pause" throughout the public sector. Public bodies, including the University of Manitoba, are being asked to extend existing contracts for an additional year at zero per cent in order to stabilize public sector compensation levels. We now find ourselves in the unusual circumstance of having a newly articulated Provincial mandate regarding public sector compensation levels that will have a profound impact on the final compensation levels that we will be able to negotiate, despite having already made what we believe to be a fair and reasonable offer on September 13, 2016. The University of Manitoba is indeed challenged by these circumstances coming at the end of what has been a difficult but advancing series of discussions since March 2016. >From the University of Manitoba Faculty Association's perspective: This 11th hour action represents illegitimate government interference in a constitutionally-protected process of collective bargaining. Mediation continues, and our focus is to advance our Members' priorities through that process. The UM is an independent body whose Board must have the autonomy to engage in all aspects of negotiation. The Province has unnecessarily endangered a complex negotiation through this misguided interference, and its action has jeopardized the educational goals of every UM student. UMFA is currently exploring legal options, and continues to focus on negotiating a fair deal for its members. Bargaining has been presented with an unexpected complication, but both parties are resolved to continue discussions. Our negotiations comprise many issues of grave importance to valued faculty members and these will be addressed as the mediation process continues this weekend. Both parties recognize the impacts a strike can have on students and will work diligently to avoid such an outcome prior to the November 1 strike deadline. The University administration and UMFA take our responsibility to the larger University of Manitoba community very seriously. We are united in caring deeply about the University's mission to create, preserve and apply knowledge contributing to the well-being of this province, Canada and the world. As both parties continue mediation throughout the weekend with a media blackout imposed by the mediator, there will be no further statements by either party.

Mumps Alert

Mumps is spread by direct contact with the saliva of an infected person (e.g., from coughing, sneezing, sharing drinks (e.g. water bottles) or kissing). It could take up to 25 days after your last exposure before you develop symptoms. What are the signs and symptoms of mumps? Mumps often starts with cold-like symptoms: * Swollen and tender glands at the jaw line on one or both sides of the face. * Fever * Headache and muscle aches What should you do? 1. If you develop symptoms or signs suggestive of Mumps, limit contact with others and contact your health care provider. Phone ahead to alert the clinic that you suspect you may have mumps so that they can take adequate precautions to prevent spread to others 2. While awaiting diagnosis, you should limit contact with others until 5 days after the swollen glands first appear. 3. Check your immunization records to see if you have had two doses of the MMR vaccine. You can contact your health care provider or public health office for assistance in accessing your records. 4. If you have not had two doses of MMR vaccine then you should either arrange for vaccination with your health care provider or contact your local public health office a to receive an immunization. Last week UMFA asked its members to vote on possible strike action. Of the 1,212 UMFA members, 666 voted to support a strike mandate. We understand that many of you may be concerned about the impact a potential labour disruption may have on your studies. Please be assured that the University is doing its best to reach a settlement and avoid a strike. The University of Manitoba's highest priority is to provide stability for students through the timely conclusion of an agreement with UMFA. The U of M and UMFA bargaining teams are continuing to meet this week. Buller Building closed at 5pm today

Attention: All University of Manitoba Students Due to a mechanical system failure to the supply air system, the Buller Building will be closed effective 5 p.m., October 3rd, 2016 and will not reopen until further notice. Some fiberglass insulation was circulated through the supply air system and could potentially be an irritant. Physical Plant will be cleaning all the ductwork and surfaces of the building over the coming days. Where possible, students will be provided a new location for classes and labs. Updates on the new interim locations will be available on this webpage<http://umanitoba.ca/registrar/status_of_classes.html>. At 7 a.m., October 4th, 2016 there will be a staging area set up at the main floor corridor linking the Buller Building to the Armes Building for those requiring short term access to the building to retrieve items from lockers, offices and laboratories. Phishing Email Security Advisory You may have received an email with the subject of 'University of Manitoba: E-mail Account Update.' Or 'UM ALERT: UPDATE YOUR E-MAIL ACCOUNT'. These are not legitimate emails ! If you have received either of these emails please delete the message Do not click the link or visit the webpage. The link directs you to a site with the intent of collecting your login credentials. If you have visited this site and logged in, you should reset your password. If you require assistance please contact the service desk and we will assist you with resetting your password. Please delete the message if you have received it and we remind you to be very cautious with all account emails. Below is a guide as to how to spot phishing attempts. What is phishing? Phishing is the practice luring unsuspecting Internet users to fake websites by using authentic-looking emails with attachments or links to web sites in an attempt to steal passwords, financial or personal information, or introduce virus attacks. You have probably seen some kind of phishing email already, although you may not even have known it was a phishing email. For example, you may have received an email asking you to verify your account information for your Bank of America account, or PayPal account, when in fact you don't have an account with either of them. The best way to protect yourself against phishing emails is to know how to spot them. So let’s take a closer look at how to spot a phishing scam… Phishing emails often try to play off of your emotions: • By promising a financial reward of some kind if you click a link and enter your login information. If an email offers you something that is too good to be true, it probably is! • By urging you to perform an action before a strict deadline. Phishing emails will try to fluster you by creating a sense of urgency. • By promising to show you something secretive or exciting. Phishers try to take advantage of your curiosity. • By threatening you with negative consequences if you don’t perform an action. Any emails that try to play off your emotions should be treated as suspicious. Inspect your emails and watch for suspicious items such as: • A signature block that is very generic, that doesn’t follow company standards • A sender address that is different than the sender name • Email tone that is not what you would normally expect from your co-workers or friends Finally, watch for these suspicious elements commonly found in phishing emails: • An email attachment from someone you don’t know OR an email attachments from someone you know but weren’t expecting • Links to web pages that look like authentic login pages • Email links that don’t match the real URL Information security starts with you so don’t let a phishing scam reel you in! Protect yourself and the University: • Don’t open unexpected attachments • Don’t give up your personal information, AND • Don’t click links without checking If you receive any suspicious email, don’t open it. Accessibility for Manitobans (AMA) survey

Whether you live with a disability, have experienced barriers due to illness, injury or age, or know someone who has, you've become aware of the impact and significance of accessibility. The University of Manitoba is committed to creating an inclusive and accessible community for all faculty, students and staff. We fully support the Accessibility for Manitobans Act<http://www.accessibilitymb.ca/> (AMA), which became law in December 2013. We have developed some accessible programming to ensure that everyone can enjoy our campuses and what the university has to offer. Today, we invite all faculty, students and staff to provide feedback on any barriers to accessibility in our work and learning environment. We will consider all suggestions and identify ways we can improve our organization, building upon our goals as identified in the U of M's strategic plan, of providing accessibility and reasonable accommodation. The AMA is important for our university and the province as a whole. The government of Manitoba passed the act on December 5, 2013 and declared the goal of being fully accessible by 2023. The AMA will be implemented over time and includes five main standards with individual timeframes, to be addressed in order: customer service, employment, information and communication, transportations and built environment. Accessibility Plan Under the act, each organization is required to develop and publish a plan of strategies to identify, prevent and remove barriers to accessibility. The plan will cover accessibility issues under each standard as it comes into effect, eventually covering all five. The University is obligated to produce its first plan by the end of 2016, and to update it every second year. This survey and consultation process will inform our plan. The U of M has a history of improving accessibility and awareness through student advocacy and accessibility services, the office of human rights and conflict management, and initiatives such as Access Awareness Day. Recently, the U of M has made significant strides in accessibility, including revision of the Accessibility policy<http://www.umanitoba.ca/admin/governance/media/Accessibility_Policy_-_2015_…> in January 2015 and the Bona Fide Academic Requirements initiative<http://news.umanitoba.ca/the-university-of-manitoba-is-leading-the-way/>, which is currently underway. There are many different types of barriers, both visible and invisible. Examples of areas for consideration include: technological and systemic; attitudinal; physical and architectural; information and communications. I know that within the University of Manitoba community, students, staff and faculty are committed to allyship and maintaining a welcoming work and learning environment, and that many members of the University of Manitoba family, including alumni, count themselves with pride as members of the LGBTTQ* community. As well, across many disciplines, researchers and scholars are exploring LGBTTQ* themes on an ongoing basis. This morning at the College of Medicine convocation, moments before 106 new physicians pledged the Hippocratic Oath during their graduation ceremony, we shared an announcement of a monumental gift to the University of Manitoba, the largest ever single gift made to this institution: Alumni Dr. Ernest and Mrs. Evelyn Rady gifted $30 million to the Faculty of Health Sciences in support of students, research, and places and spaces of learning and discovery. We are tremendously grateful to Ernest and Evelyn Rady for the amazing generosity and confidence they have shown our institution. Their support will have a transformational impact on all of us here at the University of Manitoba and on the health and wellness of the entire population of Manitoba. In honour of these gifts, I was pleased also to announce at Medicine Convocation that the Board of Governors and Senate have declared that the Faculty of Health Sciences will hereby be known as the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences and that the College of Medicine will hereby be known as the Max Rady College of Medicine. Dr. Max Rady, Ernest's father, graduated from the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Medicine in 1921, and practiced gynecology and obstetrics in Winnipeg as a highly respected physician for many decades. Please join me in congratulating our colleagues and peers in the Faculty of Health Sciences, which is made up of the Colleges of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Rehabilitation Sciences, on this important day in their history, as they pursue their ongoing journey of collaboration and cooperation. Let's all celebrate the Rady Foundation gift at a special surprise party for Ernest Rady at 1:15 p.m. today in the Brodie Centre Atrium at the Bannatyne Campus. I hope to see many of you there to mark this momentous occasion. [cid:image001.jpg@01CEC4DE.C0FA5C60] Message to the University of Manitoba Community about the Zika Virus As some members of the University community may be traveling to areas in which there is concern about possible exposure to the Zika virus, this message is intended to provide you with the latest advisories from Manitoba Health, Healthy Living and Seniors (MHHLS), the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), and the World Health Organization (WHO). Zika virus infection is of concern because of increasing evidence that it is a cause of Guillain-Barre syndrome, birth defects (i.e. microcephaly), and other neurological disorders. Considerations prior to traveling: * It is recommended that pregnant women avoid travel to affected areas and those women attempting to conceive should delay travel to areas where the Zika virus is circulating in the Americas. If travel cannot be postponed, then strict mosquito bite prevention measures should be followed to protect themselves against bites. * As symptoms of Zika infection can mirror those of influenza, travelers are strongly encouraged to obtain a seasonal vaccination prior to departure. Considerations upon returning: * Abstinence or condom use is recommended for two months for women and six months for men upon return from an affected area given increasing evidence regarding the role of sexual transmission of the Zika virus. * Pregnant women with a history of travel to or residence in area affected by ongoing Zika virus transmission should consider condom use or abstinence for the duration of their pregnancy. * Pregnant women with a history of travel to an area currently impacted by the outbreak who report two or more of the common symptoms during travel or within two weeks after returning should be tested for ZIKA virus infection. * Testing for the Zika virus is now available in Canada. However, due to limited capacity, priority will be given to pregnant women, both symptomatic and asymptomatic with a relevant travel history. How can I reduce the chances of Zika virus infection? Prevention is key. Travelers to outbreak regions should use appropriate mosquito repellants, such as those containing DEET or Icaridin, wear protective clothing, and use bed nets. Every effort should be made to keep mosquitoes out of living areas by ensuring doors are closed, window screens are in good repair and using air conditioning. Given increasing evidence of sexual transmission, abstinence or condom use is recommended upon return from travel to an affected area.
