Invitation: Vigil to honour Flight PS752 victims

Good afternoon, The University of Manitoba is deeply saddened by the news of Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 that crashed near Tehran Tuesday night. This horrific and heartrending tragedy is being felt across our country and here at home. We have now received several corroborating reports that three UM alumni, a graduate student and an International College of Manitoba (ICM) student were on board. Together, we mourn the loss of every passenger and remember those we knew as classmates, friends, students, colleagues and family members. The University of Manitoba Iranian Students Association, U of M Spiritual Care and I would like to welcome anyone impacted by this tragic event to attend a vigil in honour of the victims. I am currently conducting a study called “A Mixed-Methods Validation of a New Measurement of Writing Self-Efficacy.” In this study, students who have written for academic purposes in their undergraduate or graduate program, are invited to complete a short online survey asking them questions about how they feel about their capabilities as writers. The link to this survey, if you choose to participate, can be found here: https://umnursing.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_7NBDbNPPA7k37Nj The survey is expected to take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete and can be completed on a smart phone or computer. We have designed the study to ensure that your confidentiality is protected at all times – before, during, and after this study. The Manitoba Centre for Nursing and Health Research staff will manage the anonymous survey to ensure your privacy. Your participation in this survey is completely voluntary. Your status in your educational program will not be affected in any way if you choose to participate or not. Additional information about the study will be available on the online survey. The following message is sent on behalf of Alan Scott, Chief Risk Officer, Office of Risk Management and Security: Date: December 17, 2019 To: All Staff, Faculty, and Students From: Alan Scott, Chief Risk Officer, Office of Risk Management and Security Subject: University Holiday Closing - 2019/2020 The University will close for this year's Holiday Season at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, December 20, 2019 and resume full operations on Thursday, January 2, 2020 at both Fort Garry and Bannatyne Campuses. University buildings will be locked during this period with exceptions and special circumstances. During the holiday closure period, please be advised of the following: Ø There will be no routine trades, caretaking, grounds or delivery services Ø Elevators will remain in operation as all passenger elevators are equipped with an emergency telephone Ø Lights should be turned off for the break Ø All windows must be closed before leaving offices, labs and classrooms, in order to prevent the freeze up of radiators and plumbing systems Ø To prevent infestation and mould, please remove food from departmental areas and fridges Ø Unplug appliances including but not limited to: space heaters, kettles, coffee makers (keurigs etc.), microwaves and toasters. Please ensure all extension cords are taken out of use. Ø Let someone such as a co-worker, family member or Security Services, know what time you will be on campus and what time you plan to leave. Check in with them when you leave. University of Manitoba announces 12th President and Vice-Chancellor

[cid:image001.jpg@01D59F7B.8C3EB010] Sent on behalf of Jeff Lieberman, Chair of the UM Board of Governors and Chair of the Presidential Search Committee Dear members of the University of Manitoba community: I am delighted to announce that the Board of Governors, following an extensive community consultation and search process, has approved the recommendation of the Presidential Search Committee that Dr. Michael Benarroch be appointed as the President and Vice-Chancellor to lead the University of Manitoba into the next stage of its illustrious history. Dr. Benarroch is the provost and vice-president, academic at Ryerson University in Toronto, a role he has held since 2017, providing leadership as Ryerson’s chief academic officer and chief operating officer. He has made a significant impact as provost, overseeing academic policy, strategic planning, and the institutional budget. Prior to his time at Ryerson, he led the I. H. Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba as dean, and was founding dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Winnipeg. I am excited to welcome Dr. Benarroch, a proud Manitoban, a recognized economist, and an experienced academic leader, back to the University of Manitoba as our 12thPresident and Vice-Chancellor. His academic and leadership experience and his deep love of the province and the university make him an ideal candidate to help bring about positive transformation. Those of us who have had the privilege of working with Dr. Benarroch in his previous role as dean of the Asper School of Business know him to be a collegial and capable leader who cares deeply about the success of this University, this province and its people. He has a track record as a compelling visionary with the ability to make great things happen by connecting meaningfully with community and stakeholders. Working with Indigenous faculty, students and community members, he helped strengthen the Asper School’s Aboriginal Business Education Program so that it has recently enjoyed unparalleled success, graduating more and more diverse students than ever before. Dr. Benarroch has expressed his commitment to play a lead role in enhancing the University of Manitoba’s impact locally and globally through innovative research and scholarship, teaching and learning, community outreach, and reconciliation. Dr. Benarroch will take office as President and Vice-Chancellor on July 1, 2020, succeeding Dr. David T. Barnard, who completes his term on June 30, 2020, following 12 years of distinguished service as president. I want to take this opportunity to thank David for 12 years of relationship building, visionary growth and transformation. Under his leadership, the University of Manitoba has expanded greatly in physical size and student population, and increased both the Indigenous and international student populations, achieved new heights in research accomplishments and achieved unprecedented success in philanthropy through the Front and Centre campaign. In 2011 Dr. Barnard made a formal Statement of Apology and Reconciliation to Indian Residential School Survivors in front of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, the first leader of a post-secondary institution to do so, and David has provided steadfast leadership in building relationships with Indigenous students, faculty, and communities throughout his time as president. I would like to pay special appreciation to all members of the community who informed the work of the Presidential Search Committee through your contributions to the consultation phase of the search. Thank you also to the members of the presidential search committee for their commitment to this process and for selecting a leader who will shape the success of this institution, this province and beyond. In this role, he serves as Ryerson’s chief academic officer and chief operating officer, providing leadership in academic policy and programming, strategic planning and the university budget. In his time at Ryerson he has led and revamped the budget process, consulting widely as the University implemented significant budget reductions. He co-chairs Ryerson’s Truth and Reconciliation Implementation Committee. Dr. Benarroch is committed and excited to work with the University of Manitoba and broader communities in advancing Indigenous engagement and reconciliation. Prior to his current appointment, he served as dean of the I.H. Asper School of Business from 2011-2017. From 2008-2011, Dr. Benarroch served as the founding dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Winnipeg. Passionate about teaching and research, Dr. Benarroch is an economist and has taught economics at Canadian universities since 1989. His research focuses on global economic outlook, globalization, and the impact of trade on the environment. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Carleton University, his master’s from Western University, and a B.A. (Honours) from the University of Winnipeg. Throughout his career, Dr. Benarroch has been an active leader and contributor in collegial governance at the institutions at which he has served, at the department, Faculty and University levels and believes strongly in the importance of collegiality. He has extensive experience in working in unionized universities and has served as a member of faculty association and management bargaining teams. Dr. Benarroch has extensive experience in community leadership and Boards. He has engaged with the boards of all three universities at which he has worked, and as Provost serves as a non-voting member of the Board. He has served on various national boards including the Certified Management Accountants, as chair of the Board of Jewish Education, chair of the Crown Corporation Council, the Premier’s Economic Advisory Council and on the Council of Economic Advisors for the Credit Union Central. He has completed the Directors Education Program training from the Institute of Corporate Directors. Dr. Benarroch is a proud Manitoban who is very excited to return to Winnipeg and lead the University of Manitoba as president. He believes strongly in the importance of the University of Manitoba to this province and is keen to build and enhance connections in the community. His passion for this community and the power of higher education is readily apparent and his experiences to date in the academy, in academic leadership, and in the community will serve him, and the University well in the role of president and vice-chancellor. Dr. Benarroch was born in Tangier, Morocco, his family immigrating to Winnipeg when he was three years old with the expectation of greater opportunities. He was among the first generation of his family to attend university and the first to earn a graduate degree. He holds a BA (Hons) from the University of Winnipeg, a MA in economics from Western University, and a PhD in economics from Carleton University.

Fort Garry campus power outage - affected buildings

Celebrating UM alumnus Dr. James Peebles’ Nobel Prize

Good Afternoon, On behalf of the entire extended University of Manitoba family of students, staff, faculty and alumni, I want to convey how deeply proud we are of UM graduate and acclaimed cosmologist Dr. James Peebles — for winning the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics<https://news.umanitoba.ca/um-alumnus-wins-nobel-prize-in-physics/>, and demonstrating for all the world to see, as we have claimed about the University of Manitoba for years, "from here, you can go anywhere," including across galaxies. Dr. Peebles, recognized as one of the most highly regarded cosmologists, was cited for “theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology,” and shares the award with two Swiss astronomers, Michel Mayor, 77, and Didier Queloz, 53, who discovered a planet orbiting a binary star. We have a proud tradition of nurturing great thinkers and doers here, and today, in celebrating Dr. Peebles' extraordinary achievement, I am sure we are inspiring new generations of scientists and others striving to understand all aspects of the world in which we live. Good afternoon, Today at Senate I shared with colleagues that the University of Manitoba has accepted the report titled University of Manitoba Indigenous Senior Leadership: Report and Recommendations to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic), prepared by a committee chaired by Dr. Catherine Cook, Vice-Dean Indigenous, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. We are acting promptly on the recommendations, beginning with the approval last week at the Board of Governors to move forward with the establishment of a Vice-President (Indigenous) position. Student Climate Strike Events on September 27, 2019

In Winnipeg, strike action and other activities have been planned between 12-5pm at the Manitoba Legislature by the Manitoba Youth for Climate Action<https://www.mbyouthforclimateaction.org/>. At the University of Manitoba we all care about this issue and the future of our planet. We are committed to environmental sustainability and to minimizing our ecological impact. Invitation to Community Presentation on Sexual Violence

Good afternoon, As was reported<https://news.umanitoba.ca/sexual-violence-report-being-reviewed/> to the community on July 19, the report I requested last year to help guide the University of Manitoba to better address sexual violence, harassment and discrimination has been completed. I commend co-authors Donna Miller and Helga Van Iderstine for their hard work on this independent review, titled Responding to Sexual Violence, Harassment & Discrimination at the University of Manitoba: A Path Forward. The result is a comprehensive, robust report that makes 43 recommendations, all of which I accept and am committed to implementing. Today, I invite all of you to join me and the vice-presidents on Tuesday, September 17 at 2:30 pm in the Manitoba Room, UMSU University Centre, where I will share the report and discuss the first steps to engaging the University community in moving forward on the recommendations. I am pleased to add that Ms. Van Iderstine has agreed to join us for this community session to explain the process underpinning the report. The entire report will be made available online immediately after the session. I hope to see you there, as we continue to work together to ensure the University of Manitoba provides students, faculty, staff and visitors an inclusive, respectful and safe environment.
