by VP Students 22 Sep '26

22 Sep '26

Dear students, As the fall term gets underway, we want to remind you of the supports and processes available if you need academic accommodations for spiritual and religious observance. The University of Manitoba is committed to supporting students' well-being and to respecting the diversity of religious and spiritual practices within our community. If you anticipate needing accommodations, please consider the following options: * Review your course syllabus for information regarding missed tests, assignments, examinations, and other coursework requirements. Some courses or departments may have established procedures or policies that apply when academic work is missed. * Contact your faculty/advisor as soon as possible, ideally early in the term or as soon as you become aware of the need, to discuss assignments, tests or exams that may be impacted. * Review available accommodation options with your instructor or advisor. In some situations, you may be asked to complete the Self-Declaration Policy for Students<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/academic-supports/student-advocacy/se…> form. * Consider speaking with a faith, spiritual, or community leader about ways of observing religious or spiritual practices, particularly where academic requirements may be difficult to adjust. * If you need help navigating a request or are experiencing challenges, you can contact Student Advocacy and Case Management<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/academic-supports/student-advocacy>, the Spiritual Care and Multi-Faith Centre<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/spiritual-services>, or the Office of Human Rights and Conflict Management<https://umanitoba.ca/human-rights-and-conflict-management/> for guidance. We wish you a successful academic year, and the blessings and joy of cultivating your spiritual well-being. Sincerely, Spiritual Care and Multi-Faith Centre [cid:image002.jpg@01DD49D6.C8E60650]

Introducing L’offis Wiichihihwahk – Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous)
by VP Indigenous 10 Sep '26

10 Sep '26

[Graphic with embellished bottom and text reading: Introducing L'offis Wiichihihwahk - Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous)] Dear students, As we begin a new academic year, I’d like to introduce you to a name you’ll be seeing and hearing more often across the UM community: L’offis Wiichihihwahk, the new name of the Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous). L’offis Wiichihihwahk is a Michif name gifted to our office by Elder Charlotte Nolin with the support of Michif language keeper Verna DeMontigny. It means “the office that helps.” When gifting the name, Elder Nolin shared a simple but powerful teaching: people are the medicine, helping one another. That spirit is at the heart of L’offis Wiichihihwahk – Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous) — supporting one another, building relationships and creating a campus community where Indigenous students, cultures, languages, Knowledges and Ways of Being are respected and can thrive. Gifted in Michif, the name honours the Métis Nation and is part of a growing effort to ensure Indigenous names and languages are visible, spoken and honoured throughout our campuses. I invite you to learn the name and explore the story and meaning behind it: * Pronunciation: Luff-iss Wee-chay-hayh-wawk<https://soundcloud.com/um-indigenous/loffis-wiichihihwahk?si=4076634a09254e…> * Watch the video<https://youtu.be/BhaUJ4QDV1s?si=bT1b_GWHESBYXV5l> to learn more about the new name. * Read "L’offis Wiichihihwahk: UM’s Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous) introduces its new Michif name<https://umtoday.ca/stories/loffis-wiichihihwahk-ums-office-vice-president-i…>” to learn more about the name and Indigenous naming at UM. I hope that the next time you see or hear L’offis Wiichihihwahk – Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous) on campus, you’ll remember the spirit at the heart of the name: we help one another and no one walks alone. I look forward to seeing many of you at Indigenous Orientation<https://umanitoba.ca/indigenous/indigenous-orientation> on September 16 — a great opportunity to connect with other students, build relationships and experience the Indigenous community at UM. Thank you, Kinanāskomitin, Miigwech, Pidamaya, Máhsi cho, NakurmĪk, Maarsii, Merci Angie Dr. Angie Bruce, PhD, MBA Vice-President (Indigenous) L’offis Wiichihihwahk – Office of Vice-President (Indigenous) 202 Administration Building | 66 Chancellors Circle Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 2N2 Angie.Bruce(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:Angie.Bruce@umanitoba.ca> [Image]

28 Aug '26

[Graphical user interface Description automatically generated with low confidence] Message from Laurie Schnarr, Vice-Provost (Students) Hello Bisons! I hope you had a great summer! September 9 marks the first day of classes for many students at UM and we can’t wait to welcome you! As you get ready for Fall Term, here are a few updates to help you plan your commute and navigate the Fort Garry campus. Road construction Roadwork on and around the Fort Garry campus may affect your commute, including construction on Dysart Road, University Crescent, Pembina Highway, Abinojii Mikanah and Kings Drive. Please expect delays and plan ahead. Allow for an additional 15 to 30 minutes on average. Check UM Services Disruptions<https://umanitoba.ca/facilities/service-disruptions> for a full listing of roadwork around campus and to receive updates. Winnipeg Transit Winnipeg Transit’s fall schedule begins September 6. Before travelling to campus, check your route and schedule: * Find your bus routes<https://winnipegtransit.com/routes> * Find stops and schedules<https://winnipegtransit.com/stops> * Plan your route with Navigo trip planner<https://winnipegtransit.com/navigo?mode=depart_after&dateTime=now> When planning a trip with Navigo, make sure you input a date after September 6 to see the fall schedule. All students registered for classes in the Fall term will have unlimited access to Winnipeg Transit through the U-Pass, unless you have manually opted out. To avoid long line-ups, don’t wait for the first day to pick up your U-Pass… they are available NOW at the UMSU Service Centre at Fort Garry Campus or Answers at the Bannatyne Campus. The U-Pass is administered by UMSU, so please direct any inquiries to U-Pass(a)umsu.ca<mailto:U-Pass@umsu.ca> or check out their website.<https://umsu.ca/services-and-support/u-pass/> Getting around campus Take a few minutes to find your classrooms before your first day using UM’s interactive campus maps<https://maps.umanitoba.ca/.innerListBuildings>. The maps are also useful for locating student services, food, washrooms, parking, and more! Use the drop-down menu to navigate between the Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses. Campus safety The safety and well-being of students, faculty and staff is a top priority at UM, and we are committed to continuously enhancing campus security and our emergency response efforts. As we start the Fall Term, each one of us has a right to feel safe, and a responsibility to do our part to ensure a safe campus for all. Important upcoming changes to multi-factor authentication Dear students, staff and faculty, The University of Manitoba would like to share information regarding Microsoft’s upcoming changes to multi-factor authentication (MFA), which are intended to strengthen account security and reduce the risk of phishing attacks. Microsoft has announced that it will begin retiring its built-in SMS text message and voice call verification options. Beginning September 1, 2026, people who use SMS text message or voice call verification for MFA may see prompts asking them to register a more secure authentication method, such as: * Microsoft Authenticator<https://umanitoba.ca/information-services-technology/my-security/set-up-mfa…> * Passkeys – To add a passkey, go to mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info<https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info> → click "Add sign-in method" → select "Passkey" and follow the steps. * Hardware security keys<https://umanitoba.ca/information-services-technology/my-security/request-to…> – OTP (one-time password) key fobs for example or any which are FIDO (Fast Identity Online)-compliant No immediate action is required. SMS and voice-based MFA will continue to work for now. However, if you are not already using one of these authentication methods, Information Services and Technology recommends registering for a more secure option as soon as Microsoft prompts you to do so. This will help ensure a smooth transition and improve the security of your university account. IST is currently reviewing Microsoft’s changes and assessing options to support our community members. More information will be shared as decisions are finalized. If you need help with MFA or registering a new authentication method, contact the IST Service Desk<https://umanitoba.ca/information-services-technology/#contact-us>. Thank you for helping keep University accounts secure.
