This change reflects and celebrates the commitment that the University of Manitoba is making in teaching and learning. The Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, The Division of Extended Education, Information Services & Technology, and the D2L Corporation have committed to continuing their strong partnership to help support the efforts to enhance teaching and learning at the University of Manitoba. Phishing Email Recommendations There have been increased reports of Phishing emails. We would like to remind you of precautions when it comes to unsolicited email. 1. All unsolicited emails related to your accounts should immediately be suspect. 2. Phishing emails will redirect you to an illegitimate site and prompt you for personal information. 3. You can always check the destination of the link by hovering your mouse pointer over it. 4. Never click a link in an unsolicited email instead visit the organization’s website directly by typing a known address into your browser. 5. The University of Manitoba will not ask for your password or confidential banking information via an email. Some common themes to watch for are: 1. threats of account closure 2. mentions of "upgrades" that require changes to your account 3. "verification" of your account 4. any request for userid, password, financial information 5. request to "click a link" for anything related to email or financial accounts 6. generic wording in the salutation, body or closing signature 7. technical deception to make a link in an email appear to belong to a spoofed organization 8. use of images instead of text in order to evade keyword filters 9. Forging real websites, logos or login pages 10. The targets are often email accounts, online banking, credit cards, PayPal, Amazon, and parcel delivery. If you receive an email that you are uncertain of DO NOT click any links. Telecom PBX Upgrade 28 Jan, 20:00 - 22:00 Please be advised that due to Telecom Infrastructure upgrades, there will be intermittent outages of individual IP phones from 8 PM - 10 PM at both Bannatyne and Fort Garry campuses on 28 Jan 2015. In addition, there will be a complete outage of all telecom services beginning at approximately 9:30 PM lasting for 10 minutes which will result in the following service interruptions: No 911 service from a university phone No 555 service No local calls No long distance calls No voice mail service No internal calls on campus Code Blue / Emergency stations will not work Elevator emergency phones will not work In the case of an emergency please call 911 from a CELLULAR phone. A message from Dr. David Barnard, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manitoba November 14, 2014 http://www.umanitoba.ca/?utm_source=waag&utm_medium=email http://news.umanitoba.ca?utm_source=umtoday&utm_medium=email A message from Dr. David Barnard, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manitoba I am writing to you today about the serious budgetary challenges our University community is facing. Conversations about the budget are not always easy ones to have, but we all need to understand the subject in order to respond appropriately. As more information becomes available, I will share it with you in a timely fashion. Post-secondary institutions in this province and country can no longer sustain their operations within the current funding model. Nationally, universities have been forced in recent years to cut budgets at the expense of essential programs and services. In Manitoba, many years of low provincial grant funding and frozen or controlled tuition rates have resulted in severe stresses on the capacity of our post-secondary institutions to deliver on their mandates. At the University of Manitoba in particular, the financial demands associated with operating our institution have outpaced the growth of our resources. Put bluntly, the funding model in place does not enable the University to fully support the outcomes our students, staff and faculty are capable of achieving for themselves and, ultimately, for the betterment of Manitoba. As we advocate for changes to the model and improved funding, we are at the same time faced with the immediate prospect of balancing the budget under cur rent circumstances. Together we need to find ways to better align our expenses with our revenues while maintaining our commitment to our institutional priorities. This will be the focus of our work as we prepare a balanced budget for 2015/2016.
