[University of Manitoba Faculty of Graduate Studies]
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition deadline is soon approaching (Thursday, January 21) and the Faculty of Graduate Studies is asking advisors to encourage their students to apply for the competition.
Three Minute Thesis is a research communication competition that gives graduate students the opportunity to present their thesis research to a non-specialist audience. The competition is open to master’s and PhD students and past competitors have described it as a challenging and valuable experience that allowed them to demonstrate the significance of their research to their peers and the broader community.
Advisors play a vital role in student development, and I would appreciate it if you could encourage your graduate students to participate. Application and competition details can be found here: https://umanitoba.ca/graduate-studies/student-experience/three-minute-thesis....https://umanitoba.ca/graduate-studies/student-experience/three-minute-thesis-3mt
This year’s competition will be held virtually/online making it easier for University of Manitoba students that are not currently in Winnipeg to participate. I have also included some text to help promote 3MT through departmental communications and we would appreciate your help in the promotion of the event.
Sample copy for departmental ENewsletters:
The Three Minute Thesis competition is a research communication competition that provides a valuable opportunity for master’s and doctoral students to share their research with a non-specialist audience.
Graduate students have three minutes to explain their research and its importance with only a single static image or slide to illustrate what they’re talking about. A panel of judges drawn from the community will evaluate their presentations on criteria including confidence, ease in understanding, significance of the research, and quality of the presentation itself.
Student competitors are selected by the Faculty of Graduate Studies on the basis of short, simple videos submitted as part of the application process. They are then grouped into sets of challengers who compete in heats before an online audience and preliminary judges. The top three winners from each heat will receive prizes, and the winners of the heats go on to the finals that will be held in April 2021.
The 3MT competition offers an experience that promotes professional development, while also being fun and competitive!
The application deadline is January 21. More details and how to apply online can be found at: umanitoba.ca/3mthttps://umanitoba.ca/graduate-studies/student-experience/three-minute-thesis-3mt
