Subject: Fee watch campaign update: 160% differential fee proposed & VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Hi everyone,
The Board of Governors agenda has been made public and the fee increases proposed are worse than we thought.
The University of Manitoba is proposing to increase fees for all students by $100 regardless of course load, and levy new fees of about $360 for a full-time student taking labs. The U of M is also proposing a 60% tuition fee increase for undergraduate international students (i.e. bringing the differential fee to 160%), an increase of about $1200 next year for a full-time international student . This would bring undergraduate international student fees to about $9200, not including the new ancillary fees. More information about the budget proposal is available at www.umsu.ca
There is still time to stop these fee increases. If hundreds (or hopefully thousands!) of people come show their concern by coming to the U of M Board of Governors Meeting on Tuesday May 23, we can put pressure on the board to stop the fee increases. This will also pressure the provincial government to enforce the tuition fee freeze and stop the rising fees.
We are printing posters and flyers about the rally on May 23 and WE NEED YOUR HELP! Stop by the UMSU Office on Friday to pick up flyers to distribute around campus. We will also need volunteers Tuesday to remind students to come to the rally in the afternoon.
The Board of Governors meeting will be Tuesday, May 23 at 4pm in Rm 160 Continuing Education (Frank Kennedy). If you are not in class or working, please join us ahead of time at 2:30pm in the UMSU Council Chambers (Rm 176 Helen Glass) and to walk over together with us at 3pm.
Please forward this information to EVERYONE you know, and if you have any questions please feel free to contact us by email or stop by the UMSU or GSA Office.
